#1 The Utah Hockey Club’s Dylan Guenther scored twice and got a go ahead goal at 10:01 in the third period. Guenther extended his point streak to seven games in a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild at the Excel Energy Center in Minneapolis.

#2 The Washington Capitals goalie Charlie Lindgren stopped 24 shots and the Caps got a 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at the Capital One Center on Friday. The Capitals Connor McMichael, Aliaksei Protas, and Jakob Vranda all scored a goal and an assist.

#3 The Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray stopped 25 shots in his first NHL game back since Apr 2, 2023 getting the win over the Buffalo Sabres at Key Bank Center in Buffalo on Friday 6-3. it was also Murray’s first NHL win since March 23, 2023. Sabres have lost 12 straight games and have 0-9-3 during the losing streak and are 11-18-4 overall.

#4 The Montreal Canadiens Patrik Laine scored the go ahead goal at 7:58 to lead the Habs to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Pizza Arena in Detroit on Friday. Emil Heineman and Jake Evans each scored and got an assist for Montreal. Habs goaltender Cam Talbot save 24 shots.

#5 Aleksander Barkov scored with 17 seconds remaining in overtime that gave the Florida Panthers a 2-1 win over the the St Louis Blues at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Friday. Barkov got a wrist shot from the right circle during a power play right after he was sent to the penalty box for tripping the Blues Brayden Schenn at 4:17.

With 3-2 Overtime Comeback Victory Over Vancouver, There’s Finally No Place Like Home For Utah HC

SALT LAKE CITY–Utah snaps a 5-game home losing skid with a thrilling 3rd period comeback and overtime win against the Vancouver Canucks 3-2.

The last time Utah Hockey Club won at home was five weeks ago, November 13, against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Coming into Wednesday night’s matchup with the Vancouver Canucks, Utah had lost five consecutive home games while winning six in a row on the road including the most recent two against Colorado and San Jose.  Utah had scored four or more goals in each of their last five games.  

The first period ended as a scoreless draw, with Utah netminder Karel Vejmelka turning away all four of Vancouver’s shots, and Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko turning away nine from Utah. The two squads split the period’s faceoffs with each team winning 11 of 22.

At 8:41 of the second period, Vancouver defenseman Erik Brännström committed a holding penalty against center Logan Cooley, but Utah was unable to capitalize.  Just three seconds following the penalty kill, Utah defenseman Michael Kesselring went to the sin bin for interference against Canuck winger Conor Garland, and with just five seconds remaining in Vancouver’s power play Danton Heinen found the back of the net to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead, assisted by Quinn Hughes.

Dakota Joshua put Vancouver up 2-0 early in the third period going the length of the ice on a breakaway, assisted by Teddy Blueger and Quinn Hughes.  Utah appeared to be pressing to overcome their home arena blues, resulting in some sloppy moments in the offensive zone. 

Nearly halfway into the period, Captain Clayton Keller gave Utah life with his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Nick Schmaltz and Barrett Hayton. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers cross-checked Keller to give Utah a critical power play opportunity which was cashed in just 22 seconds later by Dylan Guenther, assisted by Keller and Logan Cooley, keeping hope alive for a potential end the home losing streak.

As the crowd roared in overtime, the two squads exchanged numerous potential game-ending scoring chances with multiple rushes.  In the end, however, it was Utah defenseman Mikhail Sergachev who came through in the clutch with his 8th goal of the season, assisted by Cooley, to secure the victory.  Utah has now won 5 of its last 6 games.  

Defenseman Mikhail Sergachev spoke with media in the locker room afterward.  “Yeah, it feels good. Finally we got two at home. It feels great. I don’t think we have won at home in a month or so, you know, obviously a big one.”’ Responding to a question about transitioning road success to home success, Sergachev added, “Yeah, it’s just overall play. It’s not like at home we’re not trying. We’re trying a little more, and gripping the sticks sometimes, trying to get a win. But I’m just proud of the group coming from behind. We were down two nothing. Big goals, obviously a big power-play goal, kind of lucky, but we take those, and obviously big in overtime.  …  We’re growing as a group. You know, we’re a young group, but we can make the playoffs. We can play in the playoffs. We can play against playoff teams. We show it on a nightly basis, so we just have to put 60 minutes together and play like that every night.”

Captain Clayton Keller weighed in on getting the home win. “Yeah, it feels good. I think we had a good start, and in the second, we were a little sloppy. We gave them a lot of chances just from our mistakes and maybe forcing a little bit. But, similar to that Minnesota game, I think we regrouped after the second and wanted to have a good start. And I think it’s good, power play gets a goal, and we get a five on five, and great playing in overtime. A lot of players stepped up and made big plays at key times.”  What was the turning point? “I don’t know, maybe after we got the first one, and then we killed off a penalty there. Sergey (Sergachev) makes an unbelievable block on the one timer there that maybe saves a goal for us, and it’s great to see him get the winner as well.”

Earlier in the day, team owner Ryan Smith posted to X, “My treat…we’re opening up single goal view seats which we typically don’t open. Use the link to get 2 free tix for tonight. First come, first served. Let’s pack the barn!” About 2,000 tickets were given away in less than an hour.

Head coach André Tourigny commented on Smith making tickets free and the atmosphere. “That means a lot for the player. You want to be supported, you want to feel like you belong. It means a lot for the coach. It means a lot to everybody. The reaction tonight from the fans, from the first period, from the moment Keller scored, the overtime, don’t tell me you don’t have goosebumps. That was cool, that’s what you love.”

This game marked the conclusion of four straight one-game homestands for Utah. Following this coming Friday night’s game in Minnesota, Utah will return for three consecutive home games beginning on Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks at 3:00pm MST.

Sharks fall to Jets 4-3 in Georgiev’s first start at home

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks faced off against the Winnipeg Jets for the second meeting this season. The first time was on October 18th in Winnipeg when the Sharks fell 8-3. Newly acquired forward Nikolai Kovalenko and goalie Alexandar Georgiov will be making their home debuts.

Winnipeg got on the board first at 1:52 with Kyle Connor scoring his 18th goal of the season assisted by Mark Scheifele and Gabriel Vilardi. Tyler Toffoli tied the game at 1-1 at 12:18 of the second period with Nikolai Kovalenko and Macklin Celebrini registering the assists. That was Kovalenko’s fifth point in just his fourth game with San Jose.

At 7:09, Shakir  Mukhamadullin took a hooking penalty against Adam Lowry. 20 seconds later, Mark Scheifele scored his 17th goal of the season to give the Jets a 2-1 lead. Coming into today, the Jets were first in the league on the powerplay with a 30.3%. “Their PowerPlay is the best PowerPlay in the league, um they’ve been together for a few years now and they make really good plays and they played a good game tonight”. Said Tyler Toffoli.

At 16:06, Macklin Celebrini drew a tripping call to put them on the powerplay. A minute and five seconds later, Celebrini scored his 11th goal of the season to tie the game again at second period. Jake Walman and Tyler Toffoli registering the assists.

At 4:44 of the third period, Fabian Zetterlund gave the Sharks their first lead of the game scoring his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Jake Walman. At 11:56, Kyle Connor scored his second of the night to tie the game at 3-3. With 2:30 left in the game, Adam Lowry scored his ninth goal of the season to secure the win for the Jets.

“I think everyone’s frustrated by the result, I think we’ve made some strides from last game, I thought we played harder tonight.” said Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky. The Sharks will be back in action on Thursday hosting the Colorado Avalanche SAP Center in San Jose. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood and defenseman Givani Smith will be making their first return back to San Jose since getting traded on December 9th.

The Sharks were welcome back home after a series of games on the road but did not finish on a good note

After winning in St. Louis with a phenomenal performance by Maklin Celebrini, Utah visited the Shark Tank for the first time under the team’s name. A game that was marked by refereeing controversy throughout the hockey game, something that severely harmed the Sharks.

The first period started with Utah scoring the first goal of the night with Dylan Guenther assisted by Cooley and Service, and the Sharks would not stay that way, Alexander Wennberg tied the game with a wrist shot assisted by Goodrow and Ceci. The first period was pretty even, with both teams trying to hurt each other, but the first intermission came with a score of 1-1.

During the second period, things remained uneventful until the Sharks made it 2-1 with a goal by Mikael Grandlund and a play orchestrated by Zetterlund and Eklund.

Utah took advantage of the penalty against the Sharks, and in a PowerPlay goal, Utah tied it with a goal by Nick Schmaltz. Once again, Logan Cooley added another point.

In the third period, Fabian Zetterlund momentarily put hopes of reaching 60 minutes of Hockey with a victory. Sharks face and score, but with the usual shortcomings, maintaining the lead in close games as Clayton Keller scored a power-play goal with 43.8 seconds left.

Michael Carcone tied the game midway through the third period, and then Utah won during a 4-on-3 game shortly after Cody Ceci was penalized for using the high stick.

Utah is coming off a hot streak, winning its last few games and in decisive instances.
Meanwhile, San Jose is losing another game always in minutes before the end of the game.

The Sharks will face a tough test this Tuesday at home against the Winnipeg Jets, the current best team in the league.

#1 Macklin Celebrini scored two goals and got an assist on Thursday night against the St Louis Blues at the Enterprise Center in St Louis there is little doubt in the Sharks wins this season that Celebrini has been the key to a large number of the Sharks victories.

#2 Tyler Toffoli and Jake Walman both scored for San Jose. So the Sharks also have been getting help from a different set of players on offense each night.

#3 The Sharks were on a three game losing streak before playing the Blues on Thursday. They did have some tough customers on this last road trip losing to Tampa Bay, Florida, and Carolina before snapping the skid against St Louis.

#1 Max Pacioretty scored two goals and had three points for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks Thursday in Toronto. The Leafs William Nylander scored and John Taveras had two assists as the Maple Leafs improved their record to 18-9-2.

#2 It wasn’t even a contest as the Pittsburgh Penguins rolled over the Montreal Canadiens 9-2 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The Penguins got a hat trick and one assist out of Bryan Rust. Rust and Richard Rakell each had four points. It was a landslide for the Habs over the Pens.

#3 The New Jersey Devils Jack Hughes scored a goal and got two assists to help pace New Jersey over the the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 at Newark New Jersey. The win gives New Jersey their second win on the five game homestand. The Devils Jordan Spence scored and goaltender David Rittch stopped 23 shots. The Kings had a six game win streak snapped by New Jersey.

#4 Aliaksei Protas of the Washington Capitals scored a game winning overtime goal to help defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena in Columbus 2-1. The goal by Protas came at 2:23 and it gave the Capitals their tenth straight win on the road for the season.

#5 The Philadelphia Flyers Scott Laughton did all the heavy lifting for the Flyers scoring all four goals in the Flyers 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night. It’s the first time a Flyer had scored all four goals in a game since John LeClair did it on Oct 15, 2002.

Sharks Win 4-3 Over Blues, Celebrini, Kovalenko, 3 Points Each

The San Jose Sharks defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Thursday. Macklin Celebrini scored twice and Tyler Toffoli and Jake Wallman also scored. Recent addition Nikolai Kovalenko had three assists and Alexandar Georgiev made 17 saves for the win. Jake Neighbours, Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou scored for the Blues. Jordan Binnington made 27 saves in the loss.

In his debut with the team, Alexandar Georgiev was less busy than Sharks goaltenders have been this season. After the game, he described what he saw going on at the other end of the ice:

“Just a lot of pace. Our breakout was great, first passes were so quick in the first and as the game kept going as well. It was a treat to watch. Spent a lot of time in the offensive zone in the first and that always helps. I think everybody was buzzing there.”

Tyler Toffoli gave the Sharks a lead just 1:21 into the game, sweeping the puck over the line during a scramble in front of the net. Assists went to Macklin Celebrini and Nikolai Kovalenko.

Jake Neighbours tied the game at 10:26. He caught Ryan Suter’s pass at the center line and carried the puck all the way to the Sharks zone faceoff circle before a shooting. Suter and Colton Parayko got the assists.

The Sharks outshot the Blues 14-4 in the first period. Ty Dellandrea and Nathan Walker fought early in the period. The Sharks had one power play and one penalty at the end of the period.

Macklin Celebrini made it 2-1 Sharks at 5:43 of the second period. Celebrini carried the puck in two on one with Tyler Toffoli against Colton Parayko. Celebrini’s first shot hit Parayko burt came to Celebrini for the scoring shot. Assists went to Timothy Liljegren and Nokolai Kovalenko.

Celebrini scored again at 18:53. This goal came on a power play, with a wrist shot into the far side of the net. Assists went to Mikael Granlund and Jake Wallman.

The Sharks outshot the Blues 11-8 in the second period. The Sharks had one penalty to kill in the second period. Jan Rutta and Dylan Holloway had matching roughing penalties but Holloway drew blood, giving the Sharks the late power play.

Brayden Schenn trimmed the Sharks lead with a goal at 5:34 of the third period. With a crowd in front of the net, Schenn skated into a rebound and shot it in. Assists went to Zack Bolduc and Jake Neighbours.

Jake Wallman bumped the Sharks back to a two goal lead at 6:01. Kovalenko carried the puck into the zone with Wallman two on one against Matthew Kessel, then made the pass across so Wallman could shoot. Assists went to Kovalenko and Nico Sturm.

Jordan Kyrou scored the last goal of the game at 7:57, shooting into a crowd in front of the net. Assists went to Pavel Buchnevich and Robert Thomas.

The Blues outshot the Sharks 8-6 in the third period. There were no penalties called.

The Sharks next play on Saturday back at home against the Utah Hockey Club at 7:00 PM PT.

#1 The New York Rangers are trying to figure out what has gone wrong with their hockey club. The Rangers had best record last season but now have lost eight of their last ten games. After two games after trading defenseman Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks the Rangers lost both of those games which included a home loss to one of the worst teams in the NHL the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1.

#2 The Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks on Monday. The Aves also picked up Giovani Smith from the Sharks in exchange for goaltender Alexander Georgiev and rookie forward Nikolai Kovalenko.

#3 The Chicago Blackhawks have put goaltender Petr Mrazek on injured reserve with left groin injury on Sunday. Mrazek was replaced by goaltender Arvid Soderblom in the first period in Saturday’s game. The Blackhawks lost to the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 loss. Hawks continue to struggle just to get a win and losing Mrazek in the first period

#4 Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella had some criticism after their game after the Flyers loss to the Boston Bruins in overtime 4-3 at TD Waterhouse in Boston on Saturday. The Flyers were hit for two tripping penalties in the third period and one of the tripping penalties led to a goal against. That led Tortorella to said in the post game conference that he doesn’t teach his team to dive but maybe he should team them to dive.

#5 Washington Capitals Tom Wilson who scored two goals Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens got hit with a puck in the left cheek and came back later in the first period. The Caps rallied to beat the Canadiens for a 4-2 win on Wilson’s two goals. Wilson said it felt like his face was falling off but got looked at by the trainer and got back in the game to pick up two goals.

Utah HC Loses A Wild One To Minnesota In A Shootout 5-4

SALT LAKE CITY–After climbing back from behind in the third period to take the lead, Utah surrendered the tying goal with 44 seconds remaining and fell to Minnesota 5-4, failing to score in the franchise’s first shootout.

The Utah Hockey Club swept their two-game road trip over the past several days, first defeating the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Saturday in a game featuring Utah’s first Gordie Howe hat trick by defenseman Michael Kesselring in his 100th NHL game and in which head coach André Tourigny recorded his 100th career coaching victory, followed by a 4-2 win over the Flyers in Philadelphia on Sunday. It was also the first time Utah has recorded back-to-back victories since winning their first three games of the season, giving them a 8-6-2 record on the road.

Utah entered Tuesday night’s matchup against the Minnesota Wild with a 4-5-2 home record and hoping to break even with a win over their division rival. Kevin Stenlund got Utah off on the right foot with his 4th goal of the season at 13:46 of the first period, assisted by Michael Carcone. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka turned away 17 shots in a very lopsided opening frame.

With a little more than five minutes remaining in the second period, Minnesota forward Marat Khusnutdinov evened things up for the Wild with an unassisted goal. Teammate Kirill Kaprizov made it 2-1 just 36 seconds later, netting his 18th goal of the season, assisted by Marcus Johansson. Kaprizov trails only Sam Reinhart of Florida and Leon Draisaitl of Edmonton by one in the NHL goal scoring race.

Early in the third period, Utah caught a break as Matt Boldy went to the penalty box for tripping against Clayton Keller. On the ensuing power play, Keller cashed it in for his 8th goal of the season to tie things up, assisted by Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev.

The momentum vanished less than a minute later when Minnesota’s Marcus Johansson scored his fourth goal of the season unassisted, silencing the crowd which had been so exuberant mere seconds earlier.

Midway through the third, Utah caught yet another break as Marco Rossi went to the sin bin for tripping against Dylan Guenther. With time running out on the power play, Clayton Keller drilled a nearly identical shot past Minnesota netminder Filip Gustavsson for his second of the night and ninth on the season, assisted again by Sergachev and Guenther, making things even at 3-3.

At 11:45 of the period, Utah defenseman Juuso Välimäki gave Utah its first lead since the opening period with just his second goal of the season, assisted by Lawson Crouse. The home team locked down its defense the rest of the way until the Wild pulled Gustavsson for an extra attacker in the closing minutes. With just 44 seconds remaining in regulation, Minnesota’s Marco Rossi from Feldkirch, Austria, stunned the Utah faithful with his 10th goal of the season to send the game to overtime.

Neither side was able to claim victory in extra frame, sending the game to Utah’s first-ever shootout where Matt Boldy was able to get past Karel Vejmelka while Filip Gustavsson shut the door on Nick Schmaltz, Clayton Keller, and Nick Bjugstad to steal the win for the Wild and a first-place tie with the Winnipeg Jets in the Central Division. Utah drops to 4-5-3 at home with it’s fifth straight home loss.

Utah HC head coach André Tourigny addressed the media after the game. “It was a tough game. They’re a good team. For us, it’s our third game in four nights and with the long travel…we’re not as urgent as we normally are. So having that pushback late in the game, even if the guys were tired, I think that was huge. Unfortunately, we could not close the deal, that will go in the baggage and we won’t forget it. Sometimes we show our age a little bit. We’re a young team and we got emotional, especially when you’re tired. It’s bittersweet that we got a big point again against the number-one team in our division. Having said that, I would have loved to have two points, especially when you have a lead late in the game. But there are a lot of positives.”

Talking about Clayton Keller’s two power-play goals, Tourigny continued, “I thought those two were really clutch at key moments. I like the way he competes. I think his game is really taking off, and the way he competes, the way he works from the inside, both sides of the puck. He’s doing a good job.”

Utah captain Clayton Keller talked about the power play goals and the shootout loss. “I think the boys played hard tonight. It was nice to get a couple on the power play. Hopefully, build some momentum there. I thought we got better as the game went on. It was a little sloppy early. I’m proud of the guys for the way we fought back. We got the lead there, just gotta have better coverage…But we’ll learn from it and be ready to go next game. … There’s going to be games throughout the year where you’re a little sloppy with your execution; a couple mistakes here and there. But I’m proud of the way we fought. The power play stepped up, which we hadn’t recently. That’s a good step in the right direction. I think we have a lot of confidence right now. We’re heading in the right direction.”

Tuesday night marked the third straight one-game homestand for the Utah Hockey Club. Utah hits the road once again for games against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday and the San Jose Sharks on Saturday before returning to Salt Lake City for yet another one-game appearance against the Vancouver Canucks at 8:00pm MST on Wednesday, December 18.
