#1 Ottawa Senators center Josh Norris made his season debut Wednesday night at the Canadian Tire Center. Norris played in his first game since Jan 21 Norris had tweaked his shoulder just one week before training camp started. Norris had missed 90 games because of shoulder injuries.

#2 The Winnipeg Jets center Gabriel Vilardi is expected to be out four to six weeks due to a MCL in his right knee. Vilardi doesn’t need surgery and Jets head coach Rick Bowness said he’s glad that would have put Vilardi out for awhile and that this was the best case scenario.

#3 Len talk about the shot that Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Fredrik Andersen right between the eyes off the mask that took him out of the game from a San Jose Sharks Mario Ferraro shot in the first period on Tuesday night. Antti Raanta replaced Andersen. The Hurricanes called up Pyotr Kochetkov from their Syracuse AHL affiliate.

#4 The Nashville Predators defenseman Luke Schenn will miss four to six weeks due to a lower body injury. Schenn has been out of action since Oct 10th the Preds opening night when they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3. Schenn leads the Predators in defense with four hits and one blocked shot.

#5 The NHL Heritage Classic this Oct 29th will mark the 20th outdoor game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. The game will be held at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Commonwealth holds 57,000 fans. Two refrigeration trucks are helping getting the ice installed. The trucks traveled from Ontario to Edmonton.

#1 The Toronto Maple Leafs Austin Matthews scored a hat trick and had a quite a night and also scored his 300th career goal. Matthews got the tying goal and the Leafs later defeated the Montreal Canadiens in Toronto at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday.

#2 Defenseman Brady Skjei scored a goal and got an assist for the Carolina Hurricanes to come back on the Ottawa Senators at PNC Arena in Carolina on Wednesday for a 5-3 win. The Hurricanes got a goal each from Jordan Staal, Michael Bunting, Teuvo Teravainen, and Jacob Slavin.

#3 The Chicago Blackhawks Connor Bedard scored his first NHL goal in a loss to the Boston Bruins, The Bruins David Pastrnak scored two goals. It was the Bruins 100th season and they won their opener 3-1 at TD Waterhouse Garden in Boston.

#4 The Vegas Golden Knights Brett Howden was suspended for putting a head check to the head of the Seattle Kraken’s Brandon Tenev at T Mobile Center in Las Vegas. Howden rather than go low or below the shoulder for the check hit Tenev helmet to helmet which turned Tenev’s head and the NHL ruled it an illegal check. As a consequence Howden has been suspended for tonight’s game in San Jose and the next game on Sat 14th in Anaheim.

#5 In what many oddsmakers predict the San Jose Sharks will have a worse season this season than last year. The Sharks struggled all last season and that was with the help of former defenseman Erik Karlsson who is now with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This year they have to depend on a handful of veterans, Marc- Edouard Vlasic, Nico Sturm, Logan Couture, Ryan Carpenter, and Thomas Hertl as they open tonight against the Vegas Golden Knights in San Jose.

#1 The Anaheim Ducks Travis Zegras says he’s got a little catching up to do as he missed the first two weeks of training camp. Zegras was without a contract which he signed and the Ducks came to an agreement on Monday. Zegras signed on for three years.

#2 Both the Edmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm and forward Ryan McLeod are both out for the pre season. Ekholm is trying to recover from a hip flexor injury and McLeod has a soft tissue injury. Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft says he’s looking forward to having both players back for the regular season.

#3 The Carolina Hurricanes center Derek Stepan is retiring. Stepan 33, has played in the NHL for 13 seasons, for four teams, 890 games, and had 515 points. Stepan said after 13 seasons he’s looking forward to family and the next chapter in his life. Stepan played for  Rangers, Arizona Coyotes, Ottawa Senators and Hurricanes. 

#4 Len, it was a big deal last night as the Chicago Blackhawks Connor Bedard faced off against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. Bedard has two assists, one goal and three assists. He does look small on the ice.

#5 Ty Emberson is ready to skate for the San Jose Sharks. Sharks head coach David Quinn had Emberson play on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights. Emberson was picked up on waivers from the New York Rangers. Quentin Musty played 15:10 and plus one and was a second round draft pick.

#1 Chicago Blackhawks Connor Bedard says he can’t wait to get started for the Hawks. Bedard so far has played in a rookie prospect game, had one week of training camp and played in two scrimmage games. In the Western Hockey League last season Bedard lit up the lamp with 71 goals, 143 shots on goals, for 360 points.

#2 Can Bedard be that one player that can fulfill the need for the Blackhawks who dealt Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers and Jonathan Towes is out for this season and wants to come back next season at 35 years old.

#3 The Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid said winning the Stanley Cup would fulfill his legacy as one of the game’s greatest all time players saying “the greats have won and that’s what you have to do.” Can McDavid and the Oilers have a shot at doing it this season?

#4 The Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy will be out after having back surgery for ten weeks. Vasilevskiy’s surgery was successful to treat a lumbar disk herniation. Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois said there was no long term concern, that the surgery was a success and he looks forward to Vasilevskiy’s return.

#5 At practice on Thursday the Pittsburgh Penguins were getting a look at defenseman Erik Karlsson as Kris Letang was shifted to the left flank and said that after playing left flank after 17 seasons it’s going to take some getting used to. Karlsson meantime said he’s trying to get on the same page with his All Star caliber teammates Sid Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Richard Rakell.

#1 The Vancouver Canucks team president Jim Rutherford said that this is a playoff bound team but Rutherford feels not all the pieces are in place yet. Rutherford said to be a playoff team everything has to go right, the goaltending, special teams, and you can’t get a lot of injuries.

#2 Brad Marchand forward for the Boston Bruins has taken over as team captain, Marchand said that he’s proud to wear the C for the Bruins. Marchand takes over the captaincy for Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara. Bergeron retired on July 25th and Chara was team captain from 2014-2020.

#3 Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele had 31 game season and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck are trying to focus on the coming 2023-24 season. Hellebuyck in his ninth season with the Jets this is the last year of his contract. Also Scheifele after this season becomes a unrestricted free agent. How important is it for the Jets to sign these two players?

#4 The Toronto Maple Leafs William Nylander has moved from right wing to center opening training camp on Thursday. Nylander according to Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is a high priority signing. Nylander is in the final season of his six year $41.4 million contract averaging $6.9 million a season.

#5 San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture is listed week to week with a lower body injury. Couture will miss the start of training camp and no doubt he’ll have to sit out some of the pre season games which starts Sep 24th. Couture was injured while training in the off season saying it frustrating and he’ll miss playing with the guys.

#1 Connor Bedard is all the rage and the Chicago Blackhawks are excited on seeing what he can do. Bedard is excited about getting in camp and getting on with the NHL pre season and is compared to being the best NHL prospect since Austin Matthews.

#2 The Toronto Maple Leafs extended head coach Sheldon Keefe two more seasons. Keefe will be under contract from 2025-26. Talk about some the things the Leafs like about Keefe to bring him back for two more seasons.

#3 The Vegas Golden Knights Phil Kessel said he is willing to give up his 1,064 consecutive games streak to help the Knights. Kessel is not guaranteed a contract for the 2023-24 season and said he would take a healthy scratch if it would help a team.

#4 Former San Jose Shark Joonas Donskoi announced his retirement at age 31. Donskoi didn’t play a game with the Seattle Kraken last season. Donskoi said that concussions have forced him into retirement. Donskoi played seven NHL seasons for San Jose, Colorado Avalanche and the Kraken.

#5 Former Minnesota North Star Brad Maxwell 66, passed away from lung cancer. Maxwell played 613 games and played in the NHL 1977-1987 the North Stars. Maxwell was an excellent golfer.

#1 The Florida Panthers Brandon Montour scored twice against the Boston Bruins to even the series 1-1 in the Panthers 6-3 win on Wednesday night at TD Garden in Boston. Sam Bennett scored his first goal since Mar 20, the Panthers Matthew Tkachuk and Nick Cousins each picked up two assists and Panthers goaltender Alex Lyon saved 34 shots.

#2 The New York Islanders dropped to 0-2 against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night in overtime. Carolina’s Jesper Fast scored at 5:30 in the overtime stanza as the Hurricanes just got by the Isles 4-3 in first round Eastern Conference action at PNC Arena in Raleigh.

#3 Minnesota Wild came away from Wednesday night’s game 2 playoff game seeing stars as they dropped a 7-3 four goal contest to the Dallas Stars. The Stars came out with two goals in the first period from Roope Hintz and Tyler Seguin for a 2-1 lead. The Stars really had a break out second period with four goals for a 6-3 three goal lead. The win by Dallas ties the series at 1-1.

#4 Len, no give up between the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night in Edmonton but the Oilers were able to score a goal with 48 seconds left in the game to take a two goal 4-2 lead and tie the series up. The Oilers picked up their last two goals in the third period from Klim Kostin his first goal of the post season at 2:20 and Evander Kane at 19:37 his first in the playoffs.

#5 Taking a look at Thursday night’s action: Toronto crushes Tampa Bay 7-2 to tie the series 1-1, The New York Rangers running away with it taking a 5-1 game 2 win in New Jersey; Seattle at Colorado, and Winnipeg Jets are surprising everybody they came in with a series lead and if the Jets can beat the Colorado

#1 Tonight’s the night Len as six NHL teams play a role how other teams could vie for a shot at clinching the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Vegas Golden Knights, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, and Dallas Stars.

#2 Len, the Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews will play his final NHL game tonight at the United Center in Chicago against the Philadelphia Flyers. Towes is at the the end of his eight year $84 million contract and will turn 35 later this month.

#3 The Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin will be a game time decision tonight due to an upper body injury. Ovechkin missed the last three games and is looking to play in this final regular season of the season. The Capitals host the New Jersey Devils tonight.

#4 Len how unbelievable is it that the Pittsburgh Penguins have made post season for the last 16 consecutive season but this season will be the first time in those 16 years that they failed to make post season.

#5 The Connor Bedard sweepstakes is coming down to the wire. Bedard with the Regina Pats and a projected No.1 draft pick might be decided tonight. The Columbus Blue Jackets with the worse percentage in the NHL at .356 two teams are runners up w the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks both with a .358 percentage.

#1 The New York Rangers Chris Kreider and Tyler Motte scored a goal each in the Rangers win over the Tampa Bay Lightning to notch closer to second place in the Metro Division. The Rangers picked up a 6-3 win at Madison Square Garden and are now just three points behind first place New Jersey Devils.

#2 The Calgary Flames are in a tie with the Winnipeg Jets for a second wild card for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference. The Flames defeated the Jets 3-1 at Canada Life Centre Wednesday night. You wanted to say something Jacob Marston.

#3 The Edmonton Oilers are having a great season and their closing in on first place in the NHL Pacific Division picking up their sixth straight win defeating the Anaheim Ducks 3-1. The Oilers Ryan Nugent-Hopkins reached 100 points and goaltender Jack Campbell stopped 27 shots. The Oilers extended their points streak to 12 games.

#4 The Minnesota Wild Kirill Kaprizov got to practice on Wednesday for the first time since Mar 8th due to a lower back injury. Kaprizov wore a non contact sweater during the practice. Kaprizov will sit out Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However Kaprizov could return on Saturday against the St Louis Blues.

#5 The Washington Capitals will miss their first post season for the first time in eight years It’s the first time the Caps have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2013-14 season. The Capitals played .500 hockey (34-34-9) but was not good enough to make the playoffs. The Caps are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference.

#1 The Florida Panthers came back in the third period to tie it up 2-2 and won it in overtime with a goal by the Panthers Brandon Montour at 1:41 as Florida gets by in a one goal win 3-2 against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

#2 The New York Islanders improved their chances in the Eastern Conference in the wild card race with a 2-1 over the Washington Capitals in Washington at the Capital One Center on Wednesday night. The Islanders Pierre Engvail scored for the second straight game. Islanders goaltender IIya Sorokin stopped stopped 25 shots and was key in the Isles win.

#3 The New York Rangers Filip Chytil signed a four year deal with the Rangers worth $17.75 million. The contract at a yearly salary is $4.4375. Chytil scored 22 goals, 20 assists, for 42 points in 66 games. The Rangers like his game and what he has done and wanted to get Chytil signed as he could have been a free agent at the end of the season.

#4 The Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews might not be with the Blackhawks in the closing days of the regular season. Toews is a three time Stanley Cup champion and has been ill with long Covid 19 and has been out of action since Jan 28th and said he will be taking time off on Feb 21. Toews had missed the entire 2021-22 season.

#5 Thomas Chabot of the Ottawa Senators will be out for the rest of the regular season due to an upper body injury Chabot who plays defenseman had to leave on Monday after getting hit the by the Florida Panthers Givani Smith in the third period in a 5-2 win. Chabot did return to the game but after the game head coach DJ Smith said Chabot would not be available Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
