NJ’s Blackwood still on fire with 36 saves in 2-1 win over Sharks

~ New Jersey Devils’ rookie goalie MacKenzie Blackwood followed his 52-save outing previously, with another fine performance for his fifth straight win Thursday. 

With an average of 39.2 saves and a goal allowed during that streak, he made 36 saves against San Jose while holding them to a solo goal.  The last time the Sharks scored less was February 1st. 

Opposing goalie Martin Jones did not go down easy though, as he held his own, saving 23 of 25 shots.  

The Devils now have wins in three straight home games, while the Sharks ended their hot four-game road streak. 

On special teams, San Jose committed six penalties and New Jersey three. The game-winner occurred during the Shark’s fifth penalty.

Jacob Middleton for San Jose and the Devils’ John Hayden saw the box first at 7:26 for fighting. Middleton also tacked on an unsportsmanlike conduct. This gave Middleton a total of seven penalty minutes, his first as a member of the Sharks this year.

San Jose Barracuda call-ups were all featured in the opening scoring play. Alexander True in the faceoff circle recovered the puck, Middleton then got it, before passing cross-ice to Tim Heed. Heed put the first tally on the board through traffic from the far right point, with his first goal of the season in 27 games. It was also his second point of the season, with an assist back on November 12th.  Middleton earned his first assist and point in five games this season. True played his seventh game and earned his fourth assist, his second in as many games. 

Stefan Noesen ended the period for the Sharks with a tripping call at 19:46.

The second period featured five penalties, four of them before any scoring and four of them involving interference. 

New Jersey followed shortly after Noesen’s with Wayne Simmonds interfering 47 seconds into the second. Teammate P.K. Subban got called for the same infraction at 7:11. San Jose’s Dylan Gambrell decided to interfere too at 9:55. Teammate Melker Karlsson had the only non-interference penalty of the period, as he put the puck over the glass for a game delay. 

Jesper Bratt put the Devils on board at 16:15, after taking a long pass from Pavel Zacha all the way at the other end. Bratt won the one-on-one battle versus the outstretched Jones, sliding the puck around his skate. 

Mario Ferraro also delayed the game with a puck over the glass to start the third at 1:06. This one was costly though, as Subban scored the game-winner with 10 seconds left in the penalty.

With Miles Wood screening Jones, Subban converted from the top of the right faceoff circle to give New Jersey the only lead they would need.

 Up Next: Dakota Mermis made his Devils’ debut and finished a +1 in 17:44 of ice time. San Jose’s “Melker Karlsson left in a walking boot.  He didn’t play in the third period,” reported Kevin Kurz of The Athletic. The Sharks continue their four-game road trip in the neighboring New state with the New York Rangers Saturday at 4pm.

#1 The San Jose Sharks picked up their third win in four games defeating the Winnipeg Jets Saturday night 3-2. The Sharks Marcus Sorenson, Melker Karlsson and Timo Meier score one goal each.

#2 Jason Zucker of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored twice in his first game as a Penguin It was Zucker’s 15th and 16th of the season after coming to Pittsburgh in the 4-1 win  over the Montreal Canadiens.

#3 The New York Rangers got a 2-1 lead over the Columbus Blue Jackets when Chris Kreider found the back of the net in the Rangers 3-1 win. Rangers goaltender Alexander Georgiev stopped 36 shots.

#4 The Carolina Hurricanes Andrei Svechnikov got a second period goal the goal marked the sixth consecutive game for Svechnikov in his point streak. The Hurricanes picked up the 5-2 win over the New Jersey.

#5 The St Louis Blues Jay Bouwmeester may have played his last game after going into cardiac arrest in Anaheim medical staff re-started his heart by a defibrillator and had to have a battery powered device that will send an electrical shock to his heart in the event of a irregular heart beat

#1 Toronto goaltender  Michael Hutchinson said that lucky bounces go your way which it did for Toronto when New Jersey defenseman Damon Severson backhanded the puck into his own net to give Toronto a 5-4 win on Friday night.

#2 Pittsburgh goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped 30 shots as the Penguins won their fifth game out of six. Pekka Rinne for the Nashville Predators allowed three goals and was pulled as the Pens beat the Preds 5-2.

#3 The St Louis Blues David Peron scored at 3:14 in overtime to give the Blues the win over Winnipeg Jets 5-4. Tyler Bozak scored twice for the Blues to help with their five goal tally.

#4 What happened to the San Jose Sharks they led after two periods 2-0 but the Los Angeles Kings came roaring back to victory with three unanswered goals two in the third period to tie the game and Jeff Carter to score the game winner in overtime.

#5 The Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron scored two goals and Jaroslav Halak stopped 26 shots against the Buffalo Sabers in a 3-0 shutout. For Bergeron it was his third straight game to scored two goals.

#1 Noel Acciari had the hats flying as the Florida Panther scored a penalty shot that got him his second hat trick. Acciari also picked up an assist in the Panther five-goal second period in their 7-4 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night.

#2 Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals scored two goals and two assists Backstrom’s teammates Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson scored a goal each in the Caps win over New Jersey 6-3

#3 William Nylander and Mitchell Marner scored two goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs in their win over the New York Rangers 6-3. Nylander and Marner scored their second goals in the early third period.

#4 Chad Ruhwedal and Joseph Blandisi got the Penguins on the board with goals in the first period as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-2. The Oilers are now on a four-game skid with Friday’s loss to the Pens.

#5 The San Jose Sharks’ Brent Burns is back on ice tonight at SAP Center to face the St. Louis Blues, . Burns in 36 games has five goals and 22 points. The stats are below Burns’ usual season average.

#1 The shocking diagnosis of 23 year old left winger Philadelphia Flyer Oskar Lindblom has been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma a rare cancer that grows in soft tissue and on the bones. Lindblom will be out for the rest of the season and will undergo surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

#2 The Vegas Golden Knights’ Max Pacioretty scored a backhanded goal with 51 seconds in overtime to get the Knights an overtime victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night in Dallas.

#3 The Colorado Avalanche got a two-goal victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday 3-1, Nathan McKinnon scored a goal and picked up an assist to get his 50th point of the season.

#4 The Boston Bruins will try and snap their five-game losing streak tonight at the BB&T Center in Sunrise tonight against the Florida Panthers. You don’t see the Bruins hit a five-game slump too often.

#5 The Vancouver Canucks are headed to SAP Center. They’re one team in the Pacific Division that would like to take advantage of the San Jose Sharks current six-game winless streak. Matt tells us how he sees this game.

#1 Leon Draisaitl and Alex Chiasson both had a goal each and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night 2-1. The win for the Oilers put them in first place in the Pacific Division.

#2 Tristan Jarry stopped 33 shots in the Pittsburgh Penguins victory over the Arizona Coyotes 2-0. Phil Kessel, a former Penguin, couldn’t score off his former teammate in the loss.

#3 The Montreal Canadiens edged the New York Rangers 2-1 on Friday night. The Habs’ Nate Thompson got a goal with less than two minutes left for the eventual game-winner.

#4 Kirby Dach, in a shootout, got the gamer with a fifth round goal and got the Chicago Blackhawks a win 2-1 over New Jersey. Hawks goaltender Corey Crawford prevented the Devils’ Jack Hughes from scoring for the final attempt in the shootout.

#5 Sportsnet was commenting on Brian Burke, who was a general manager for Vancouver, Anaheim, Toronto and now is team president in Calgary. Said that the league’s salary cap has been great for the sport, but it’s killed trade talk.

#1 Only two games in the NHL Friday night. The Pittsburgh Penguins Jared McCann and John Marino both scored goals in the third period against New Jersey on Friday night that got the Pens past New Jersey for a 4-1.

#2 The Pens’ Jake Guentzel scored his 11th goal to lead Pittsburgh in scoring and Dominik Kahun also scored his sixth goal of the season against the Devils on Friday.

#3 The Ottawa Senators’ Thomas Chabot picked up a goal and assist and Anders Nilsson stopped 30 shots as the Senators picked up a home ice win over the visiting New York Rangers 4-1.

#4 The Senators’ Logan Brown, Tyler Ennis, and Anthony Duclair picked a goal each in the Senators’ win. This was the Senators first three goal win of the season.

#5 The New York Islanders, who play in San Jose tonight, are the hottest team in the NHL at 16-3-1. What are some of the strengths you would point to that make them the NHL’s best?

#1 There’s one way to fire up the Montreal Canadiens. That’s to watch the Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin try and take out the Habs’ Jonathan Drouin, who ended up seeing stars after an Ovechkin hit. The Canadiens regrouped, came out and scored four goals in the second period in their 5-2 win over the Caps.

#2 Brad Marchand scored twice in the third period as the visiting Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2. The Bruins’ Charlie Coyle and Zdeno Chara also scored goals for Boston.

#3 New Jersey’s MacKenzie Blackwood was all the difference in goal as the Devils goaltender stopped 38 shots in New Jersey’s win over the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1. The Pens played without their offensive star Sidney Crosby.

#4 The Ottawa Senators’ Filip Chlapik got a second period goal and goalie Anders Nilsson stopped 26 shots for the Sens in their 2-1 trimming of the Philadelphia Flyers. The Senators were able to kill off four-minute power play late in the game.

#5 The Columbus Blue Jackets’ Zach Werenski got an overtime goal at 3:34 as the Blue Jackets picked up a win over the St. Louis Blues 3-2. Vladislav Gavrikov scored his first NHL goal for the Jackets.

#1 The Vancouver Canucks, who face the San Jose Sharks tonight at SAP Center, had won five straight, but snapped their streak by a goal 2-1 to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. The Sharks, on the other hand, are a struggling bunch who have four straight, but are back on home ice. Matt tells us how he sees this matchup.

#2 Speaking of streaks, the New York Islanders topped the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Isles’ eighth straight win 5-3. The Isles got goals from Matthew Barzal (6), Ryan Pulock (2), Josh Baily (5), Anders Lee (5), Derrick Brassard (4).

#3 The Philadelphia Flyers got by the New Jersey Devils 4-3. The Flyers got scoring from Oskar Lindblom (7), Sean Couturier (3), Joel Farabee (11). Flyers won in a shootout.

#4 The Washington Caps won by a convincing five goals 6-1. The Caps scored four times in the first period against the Buffalo Sabres in a period that pretty much established the game. The Caps’ Jakub Vrana scored twice in the first period.

#5 The Carolina Hurricanes got four goals in the second period that pretty much put a lock on the Detroit Red Wings with a 7-3 win. In that second period, the Canes got goals from Sebastian Aho, who scored twice; Nino Niederreiter; and Martin Necas.

#1 The Carolina Hurricanes have put an end to the postgame celebrations called the “Storm Surge.” They also will not bring it back in the event they were to get into postseason. Was there a behind the doors nudge by the league or someone that said these kind of celebrations had to stop?

#2 The Minnesota Wild got a one-goal win over the Vegas Golden Knights, a team Matt will be seeing tonight. Devan Dubnyk stopped 32 shots for the Wild. The Knights, even though they lost Friday night’s game, clinched because the Arizona Coyotes lost their game.

#3 Speaking of the Arizona Coyotes, they dropped a shootout when the Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon’s goal was the gamer. The Avs move close to a wild card spot with the win.

#4 The Nashville Predators’ goalie Pekka Rinne stood on his head for 60 minutes, stopping 42 Pittsburgh Penguin shots. Rinne was closing in on his fifth season shutout until the Pens’ Nick Bjugstad scored with 1:03 remaining in the game.

#5 The Detroit Red Wings got a 4-0 shutout over the New Jersey Devils. The Wings used two goalies for the shutout: Jonathan Bernier and Jimmy Howard.
