Timo gets two goal game in Sharks 5-2 victory over Devils; Gregor opens game with first period goal

NEWARK, NJ—The San Jose Sharks’ Timo Meier lead the way with two goals in a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday night to remain undefeated in their five-game road trip.

Noah Gregor, Jacob Middleton and Erik Karlsson each scored for San Jose, and James Reimer made 32 saves.

“It was a good game for us,’’ Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. “I thought that we got some contributions throughout the lineup, which was nice tonight, and some big goals, timely goals.”

Gregor scored the first goal at 4:26 in the first period, with Radim Simek and Marc-Edouard Vlasic assisting.

“Great goal and I know he got an assist, but I loved his details tonight,” Boughner said of Gregor. “An example at the end of the game when there were three or four minutes to go and he had to win a board battle, he was strong. He was strong on the ice and I thought he kept things simple. That’s a good line. I like that line.”

At 4:14, Middleton made his second goal of the season and extended the Sharks’ lead to 2-0.

“Especially after the start of the game we had in Chicago, we were looking to come out all cylinders firing,” Middleton said. “I think we did that in the first and we had an even better second.”

The Sharks established their dominance in the second period. Meier had a power play halfway through and Karlsson scored shortly after to boost the Sharks to 4-0.

In the third period, the Devils denied the Sharks a shutout, with Tomas Tatar scoring at 9:12 and Jesper Bratt scoring at 12:49 to cut San Jose’s lead to 4-2.

Meier made his second goal with three minutes left in the game to seal the Sharks’ victory.

The Sharks (12-9-1) have now won seven of 12 away games.

They next face the New York Islanders on Thursday at the new UBS Arena – but whether the game will be held remains up in the air as the Islanders suffered a Covid-19 outbreak and have postponed their last two games.

A decision on whether the game will go forward will be made by Wednesday morning, Sharks PR said after Tuesday night’s game.

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks lost 3-2 in a shoot-out to the New Jersey Devils Saturday at SAP Center in San Jose. Ryan Graves and Janne Kuokkanen scored for the Devils and Jonathan Bernier made 25 saves for the win. Sharks goals came from Rudolfs Balcers and Jonathan Dahlen. James Reimer made 26 saves in the loss.

New Jersey out-shot San Jose 10-9 in a scoreless first period. Each team had a chance on the power play, with the Devils power play getting two shots on goal and the Sharks power play getting three. The teams were also very close in the face-off circle, with the Sharks winning 11 draws and the Devils winning 10.

Rudolfs Balcers scored the first goal of the game early in the second period. The Sharks had just killed off an early penalty, having given up just one to the Devils power play. Mario Ferraro carried the puck all the way across the Devils blue line before making a pass through the blue paint to Balcers, who was able to put the puck in the net. Assists went to Ferraro and Brent Burns.

Devils defenseman Ryan Graves tied the game at 16:45 with his first goal of the season. He trailed the play into the zone and arrived just in time to catch a cross-ice pass from Nico Hischier. Reimer could not get across in time to stop the shot. Assists went to Hischier and Michael McLeod.

The teams continued to be very close in shots, with the second period count at 9-7 Sharks. In the face-off circle, the Devils improved to 61%, or 11-18. The Devils had the only power play in the period, and had just the one shot on goal.

Jonathan Dahlen made it 2-1 with a shot on the power play into the top corner at 4:21 of the third. Assists went to Brent Burns and Ryan Merkley.

Janne Kuokkanen tied tied it back up at 17:04 of the third. His shot was one of many that flew at James Reimer in quick succession. Kuokkanen was able to shoot while Reimer was prone across the goal mouth. Assists went to Jimmy Vesey and Colton White.

Logan Couture shot first and scored with an assertive wrist shot through the Bernier’s five-hole.

New Jersey’s Jesper Bratt shot next. His shot hit Reimer’s pad and seemed to stop but instead slid over the line to count for a goal.

Rudolfs Balcers shot next for San Jose but his shot hit the post.

Alexander Holz shot next for New Jersey and Reimer stopped his shot.

Tomas Hertl shot next, but Bernier deflected the shot away from the net.

Damon Severson shot last for New Jersey and scored. After a shimmy and a shake he lifted the puck over Reimer and up into the corner.

The final shot count was as close as ever, 28-27 Devils. In the face-off circle, New Jersey also prevailed, winning 54% of the draws. The Sharks power play scored on one of three chances, and their penalty kill was perfect against four Devils power plays.

The Sharks will hit the road now and play next in Calgary against the Flames on Tuesday at 6:00 PM PT.

#1 After winning two straight wins the San Jose Sharks (6-4-0) took a tough loss on Thursday night to the St Louis Blues (7-1-1) 5-3. The Blues built up a cushion with a three goal second period.

#1 Matt, let’s take a look at some of today’s action in the NHL the Calgary Flames (10-10-2) are getting some offense as Mikael Backlund, Andrew Mangiapane,  Matt Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan, and Juuso Valimaki scored a goal each in their 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators (7-15-1) at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

#2 The Philadelphia Flyers (10-4-3) goaltender Brian Elliott threw a shutout today against the Buffalo Sabers (6-9-3). Elliott stopped 23 Philadelphia shots for the shutout. You know about goaltending Matt talk about Elliott’s stops between the pipes today in Buffalo.

#3 The Flyers got some scoring help from Sean Couturier, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Scott Laughton each scored a goal a piece for the 3-0 win.

#4 The New Jersey Devils (7-7-2) may have shutdown the Washington Capitals (11-5-4) Alexander Ovechkin from scoring any goals on Saturday but they couldn’t stop the Caps offense from scoring five goals from Nic Dowd, Lars Eller, Garnet Hathaway, Daniel Sprong, and Jakub Vrana for the 5-2 win.

#5  In goal for the Capitals was Vitek Vanecek who stopped 22 out of 24 shots against the Devils on Saturday afternoon.

#1 The Philadelphia Flyers Nolan Patrick who suffered migraine disorder says he’s ready to return and has waited 21 months to get back. Patrick says he’s feeling better and wants to get back in the line up against the Pittsburgh Penguins for this Wednesday’s opener.

#2 It was reported that the Minnesota Wild’s Marco Rossi will be out indefinitely due to an upper body injury. Wild head coach Dean Evason said the 19 year old Rossi will not be available. Rossi signed a three year contract with the Wild on Oct 23, Rossi scored 100 points (39 goals and 81 assists) he did it in an impressive amount of time in just 56 games.

#3 At the San Jose Sharks training camp: John Leonard who played for the University of Massachusetts at forward. Leonard was drafted sixth in the NHL entry draft and is expected to make his NHL debut against the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday night. At Amherst Leonard in Division I Leonard led the division with 27 goals, 10 assists. That all ended when Coronavirus shut down the league back in March.

#4 Former Chicago Blackhawks goalie 36 year old Corey Crawford has announced his retirement from hockey and the New Jersey Devils this weekend. Crawford had not practiced with New Jersey since Jan 1st and in a statement said that he’s given everything he could to the game but it was time to retire.

#5 The New York Islanders have signed Matthew Barzal for a three year contract. The agreement was made on Saturday. In 68 games last season Barzal led the Islanders with 60 points, 19 goals and 41 assists. Barzal has led the Islanders in scoring in each of the last three seasons with the team and has played in the NHL All Star game in the last two seasons.

#1 Good things come to end at some point and the St Louis Blues eight game winning streak ended at eight games and who would have thought the New Jersey Devils would have been the team to beat them 4-2 on Friday night. The Devils scored with help from Dakota Mermis his first NHL goal and defenseman Connor Carrick his first of the season.

#2 The Winnipeg Jets shutout the Vegas Golden Knights 4-0 as Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves to do it. Hellebuyck leads the NHL in shutouts this season with six.

#3 The Calgary Flames edged the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 the Flames got scoring help from Johnny Gaudreau, TJ Brodie, and Mikael Backlund. The Flames Matthew Tkachuk got an assist on each of the goals.

#4 The Anaheim Ducks just got by the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1, Carter Rowneyu and Adam Hendrique both scored and goaltenders John Gibson and Ryan Miller stopped 30 shots for the Ducks.

#5 Vancouver Canucks got a three goal win over the Colorado Avalanche 6-3. Zack MacEwen scored two goals and Adam Gaudette picked up two assists at Rogers Centre on Friday night

Sharks Beat Devils 3-2 in OT, Couture Wins It With First Goal Since Injury Return

It’s good to have the captain back, or at least that’s what Sharks fans are saying after Logan Couture scored in overtime to cap a 3-2 comeback win after trailing 2-0 and snap a five-game losing Streak. Marcus Sorensen scored a short-handed goal and Mario Ferraro also lit the lamp to give San Jose its first win after the trade deadline.

Couture scored his first goal since returning to the lineup in the previous game, beating Schneider 38 seconds into the overtime for the win. Brent Burns had circled the cage and fed Couture in the slot, but his shot ricocheted off the goalie.

Evander Kane picked up the rebound with his back to the net, hooked his stick to pass to Couture at the far post. Couture buried it for the win and his 15th goal of the year.

Ferraro started San Jose’s comeback with his second goal of the year 2:20 into the third when his point shot fluttered through traffic, beguiling Devils net minder Corey Schneider to cut the lead to 2-1. Noah Gregor, one of the young players who will see an expanded role after the deadline departures, picked up his first career assist on the play. 

Joel Kellman, filling in on the penalty kill for an injured Melker Karlsson and the traded Barclay Goodrow, managed to force the puck the other way on a two-on-one with Marcus Sorensen. Kellman feathered the pass to Sorensen perfectly, allowing the Swede to bury his seventh goal of the year with 4:02 left in the second to tie the game.

New Jersey’s pair of first period goals came off Sharks miscues, with Travis Zajac managing to score on a no angle shot that Martin Jones saved but ultimately was pulled off the post for. The puck was sitting in the crease when Marc-Edouard Vlasic, attempting to clear it, may have put it across the goal line 11:09 into the game.

Nikita Gusev scored just under four minutes later when Jacob Middleton had a chance to clear the puck, but was pickpocketed by Gusev right in the slot. Gusev outwaited Jones for the easy goal and a 2-0 Devils lead at the time.

The Sharks continue a six-game homestand when they face the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night in a homecoming of sorts for one player. Patrick Marleau will face the team that traded him to the Eastern Conference in Monday’s dealings ending his second stint in Teal.

Sharks can’t past first period gets buried by Flyers 4-1; San Jose on five game skid

PHILADELPHIA, P.A.—The San Jose Sharks continued to struggle the day after the NHL trade deadline passed, falling 4-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers in their fifth straight loss on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

San Jose appeared to be the stronger team in the first period. Sharks interim head coach Bob Boughner said “it’s been like that the whole trip,” especially with the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers.

“We’re not giving up a heck of a lot over the 60 minutes, but when we give up that one or two big mistakes, they’re finding their way in the back of their net,” Boughner said. “And we’re not capitalizing when we have our two-on-ones and our three-on-one’s.”

As with recent games, the Sharks allowed the opponent score first. Flyers right wing Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored on the power play at 1:32, assisted by left wing James van Riemsdyk and defenseman Matt Niskanen.

Sharks center Joel Kellman tied the game on a rebound at 6:30, assisted by defenseman Jacob Middleton and defenseman Tim Heed. It was Kellman’s second goal of the season.

In the second period, the Flyers took a 2-1 lead with a tic-tac-toe passing play from center Travis Konecny and center Scott Laughton to center Kevin Hayes at 3:51.

The Flyers extended their lead in the second period to 3-1 when Hayes passed to Laughton for an easy hit into the net at 9:41.

The game got further away from the Sharks early in the third period. Hayes, assisted by Laughton and Konecny, hit one between Sharks goalie Aaron Dell’s legs to put the Flyers ahead 4-1.

But the Sharks did not give up. Center Noah Gregor scored at 8:18, assisted by left wing Marcus Sorensen, to cut the Flyers’ lead to 4-2.

“They got a couple of breaks there, the two-on-one and I think there was a three-on-two,” Gregor said. “They made good plays and they were able to capitalize, I think that was the difference.”

Sharks defenseman Brent Burns said he saw the loss as “tough.”

“It’s tough scoring goals right now and we just have to, you’ve got to play almost a perfect game, so it’s tough,” Burns said. “I think you’ve just got to try to do the right things when you can.”

Sharks captain Logan Couture returned after a 17-game absence due to a fractured ankle back. Couture said he felt “alright” but “wish I played a little bit better.”

“My hands I knew weren’t going to be great, but I figured it’s been a rough couple of days,” Couture said.

On Monday’s trade deadline, the Sharks dealt veteran Patrick Marleau to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2021 third-round draft pick that would become a second-round pick if the Penguins win the Stanley Cup. The Sharks also traded forward Barclay Goodrow to the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward Anthony Greco and a first-round draft pick.

Veteran Joe Thornton stayed put, and expressed his feelings about it.

“As you get older, you realize you only have so many shots at this thing, and it would have been nice to have a chance,” Thornton said on Monday. “I wanted a shot. I’ve been hunting this thing down for 22 years.”

The Sharks (26-33-4) return home to face the New Jersey Devils (25-27-10) on Thursday. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
