Nevada Takes Control And Beats San Jose State 90-60

The Nevada Wolf Pack host the San Jose State Spartans for some Friday night hoops. Four of the eight conference games for SJSU have been decided by three points or fewer. They lost at Wyoming on a buzzer beater, fell by only three to No. 19 San Diego State, won at the buzzer at Air Force and lost on a last-second shot to Fresno State. 

Nevada shot well early in the first half and didn’t stop throughout the half. The Wolf Pack started off on a 12-0 run (25-5 in the first 10 minutes) and the Spartans couldn’t stop them if they tried. The Wolf Pack took control and it was 49-24 at halftime.

Out of the 24 points SJSU scored, three players scored 19 of those points. MJ Amey Jr. had nine, Alvaro Cardenas had seven, and Trey Anderson had three in the first half. The biggest point of concern in the first half was SJSU shooting 37% from the field and 25% from the three point line.

Everything was going well for Nevada as at one point they led by 40 points in the game, Nick Davidson with 22 points and Jarod Lucas with 20 ponts, the game was solidified in the Wolf Pack’s hands. San Jose State had a combination of nothing falling for them and what felt like everything fell for Nevada. The game ends with Nevada winning with no issues 90-60. 

This game was definitely something Tim Miles and the Spartans want to forget and they have four days to do it. SJSU’s next game is February 6th against the Fresno State Bulldogs back in San Jose and this season may be a no go for the Spartans as a Mountain West champion contender, but they still have that dog in them where they won’t end this season without a fight.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose State men’s basketball team was looking forward to returning home to San Jose, Calif., to host its first “real” homestand for the first time in a while. But not so fast, my friends.

The Spartans had to break the bad news on Friday afternoon. Due to COVID-19 concerns within the Nevada men’s basketball team, the two-game series between the Spartans and Wolf Pack originally scheduled for February 13 and 15 has been postponed.

The Mountain West conference will announce further updates and schedule adjustments at a later date.

The Spartans came off a bye week, only to receive another week off out of precaution. SJSU will continue to practice and make the most out of their free time, and then turn their attention to the UNLV Rebels for a two-game series scheduled to be played on February 19 and 21 at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.

San Jose State defeats New Mexico 32-21 for first conference win of the season

SAN JOSE, Calif. — This Friday night looked very similar to last Friday night. San Jose State was looking for their first conference win of the season. The only difference? They defeated conference foe New Mexico at CEFCU Stadium.

The Spartans, who were battle ready, had the ball to start the game versus the Lobos.

The Spartans opened the scoring, thanks to Nick Nash. Nash ran for a 9-yard rushing touchdown — his third of the season — to put San Jose State up 6-0 with 6:50 left in the first quarter. Matt Mercurio attempted the extra point, but it was blocked by De’John Rogers.

The Spartans led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. San Jose State football was greeted by the San Jose State men’s basketball team, who made a brief appearance on the home field.

The Spartans took a 13-0 lead when Josh Love threw a pass to Billy Humphreys for the 5-yard passing touchdown at 12:56 of the second quarter. Mercurio kicked in the extra point.

Love threw another pass to Bailey Gaither for the 80-yard passing touchdown with 8:42 left in the second quarter. Mercurio kicked in the extra point. The Spartans took a 20-0 lead.

Mercurio kicked in a 24-yard field goal to extend the Spartans’ lead to 23-0 with 6:57 left in the second quarter.

Mercurio continued to shine with back-to-back field goals of 24 yards and 33 yards, respectively, in a span of 2:35 late in the fourth quarter. But Mercurio’s field goals were overshadowed by the Lobos’ first touchdown of the game. Sheriron Jones threw a pass to Jordan Kress for the 34-yard passing touchdown and Andrew Shelley kicked in the extra point to help New Mexico pull within 19 with 1:12 left in the second quarter.

The Spartans brought a 26-7 lead to the locker room at the halftime break.

The Spartan defense forced a red zone fumble to stop a Lobos drive and that was a notable third quarter play. However, New Mexico cut the Spartans’ lead to 26-14 with 3:11 left in the third quarter. Jones ran for a 4-yard rushing touchdown and Shelley kicked in the extra point.

The Spartans continued to lead 26-14 after the third quarter.

Mercurio kicked a 49-yard field goal to extend the Spartans’ lead to 29-14 at 12:47 of the fourth quarter. The field goal was Mercurio’s longest career field goal.

Mercurio added a 24-yard field goal to make it 32-14 Spartans with 6:16 left in the fourth quarter. With the field goal, Mercurio tied the single-game school record as the fourth player in Spartan history to do so.

But the Lobos made it an 11-point game with 4:52 left in the fourth quarter. Jones threw a pass to Cedric Patterson III for the 38-yard passing touchdown and Shelley kicked in the extra point.

The Spartans defeated the Lobos by a final score of 32-21. With the win, San Jose State picked up its first conference win of the season.

The Spartans (3-2, 1-1 Mountain West) take on the Nevada Wolf Pack (3-2, 0-1 Mountain West) on Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m. Game will be broadcasted on ATSN.

San Jose State falls to No. 10 Nevada 92-53

The San Jose State men’s basketball team arrived at Lawlor Events Center to take on the No. 10 Nevada Wolf Pack in a road tilt Wednesday night. Sure, SJSU had hoped to snap a 3-game losing skid, but Nevada stored a tough task for the night ahead.

In an attempt to suppress the hungry Wolf Pack, Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau went with a starting lineup of Brae Ivey, Noah Baumann, Craig LeCesne, Michael Steadman, and Oumar Barry.

The Wolf Pack jumped out to an early 9-2 lead at the first media timeout at the 15:45 mark of the first half. Nevada Basketball had some fun on Twitter as they asked: “So, it’s already 9-2 us just four minutes in. Is that good?” The Spartans’ unofficial answer might’ve been: “Not quite.”

The Spartans played catch up midway through the first. The first comeback kid was Baumann, who scored a triple for the 12th game in a row. SJSU trailed Nevada 14-5. Shortly after, Ivey scored 5 unanswered points and SJSU cut Nevada’s lead in half 20-10. Soon, SJSU began making it rain with 3-pointers. Baumann and Ivey double dipped on 3-point baskets and the Spartans pulled within 4, 20-16.

The Spartans played with a lot of heart and hung tight against the 10th ranked Wolf Pack. SJSU trailed Nevada 26-18 late in the first.

The Wolf Pack missed a layup on the last possession in the first. The ball went to the Spartans, but Baumann missed a shot from a distance. Nevada’s shooting slump sort of carried over from Albuquerque, N.M. Nevada got blown out by New Mexico 85-58 last Saturday. Yet, SJSU headed to the locker room, trailing Nevada 32-23 at halftime.

The Spartans opened the second half with an unexpected surge that surprised the home crowd in Reno, Nev. LeCesne scored 7 early points to pull SJSU within 9, 41-32, at the 15:35 mark of the second.

SJSU trailed Nevada 49-34 at the 11:52 mark of the second. But if there was a silver lining (or two) for the Spartans, Steadman had 6 points and 10 rebounds, while Ivey added 10 points.

The Wolf Pack unleashed their fury, which likely stemmed from their most recent loss, on the Spartans. Nevada poured in the points as Caleb Martin hit quite a few 3s and Miles Morales drove to the basket for a 1-handed layup, which was a SportsCenter Top 10-worthy moment. And, of course, the Nevada DJ played “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, while the local media made plenty of references on the 1969 hit because of the one and only Jordan Caroline.

The Wolf Pack continued to pour in the points, and Jazz Johnson hit some 3s to close out the game. Nevada was in the driver’s seat 92-53 with 30 seconds left in the second. The Spartans fell to the Wolf Pack 92-53.

SJSU dropped to 3-11 (0-2 Mountain West), while Nevada rose to 15-1 (2-1 Mountain West)

SJSU returns home to host the Boise State Broncos on Saturday, January 12 at 12:00 pm PT.

SAN JOSE — In order to avoid the poor air quality in Northern California being caused by the tragic “Camp Fire,” the start time for the Nevada Wolf Pack versus San Jose State Spartans game was moved up to 12 noon on Saturday. The earlier start time worked as the air quality was in the acceptable range to meet NCAA standards.

The Wolf Pack won the game 21-12 to earn their seventh victory of the 2018 season. The loss dropped the Spartans’ record to 1-10 on the season.
