Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Michael Roberson: Cardinal expect big things from Daniels this season

On the Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 Stanford Cardinal quarterback Ashton Daniels joins the Cardinal for his junior year. Last season Daniels didn’t miss a game s playing in all 12 games at Stanford and started ten games in his Freshman year. So as far as consistency and what head coach Troy Taylor is looking for in durability it’s Daniels job to win again.

#2 As far as passing is concerned for Daniels his numbers prove impressive with 58.8% of his passes completed 191 out of 325 passes for 2,247 yards and 11 touchdowns.

#3 Daniels is a mobile quarterback rushing for 292 yards for Stanford last season that was the second most for a Pac 12 quarterback last season.

#4 Michael, Daniels also can go long of five of his passes he threw 40 plus yards for touchdowns. Daniels also threw for 396 yards and four touchdowns in double overtime against head coach Dieon Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes last season.

#5 The Cardinal open the season against the TCU Horned Frogs on Fri Aug 30th at Stanford Stadium. Michael I know you’ve talked about some of the Cardinal home coming games and they’ve below than average crowds for some of those in the past but with the ACC and the Horned Frogs do you see the home opener being a drawing card?

Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Michael Roberson: Can Daniels and Ayomanor make the difference on offense this season?

On Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal were 3-9 last season the were tied with Arizona State for last place in the Pac 12.

#2 Now that the Cardinal are in the ACC where do you think they’ll be ranked going into the 2024 season?

#3 In poll of 170 members of the media for ACC.com the Florida State University (FSU) were predicted to win it all and for Stanford they were predicted to finish last in the poll.

#4 Stanford will need some growth at quarterback Junior Ashton Daniels started ten times last season he threw for 2247 yards, 11 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, can Daniels have a break through in the ACC and raise Stanford’s position in the rankings. He certainly will need to come out with a strong offense and beat some challenging ACC teams?

#5 Maxwell Award candidate from last season wide receiver WR Elic Ayomanor is someone that Daniels will be looking to throw to. With Ayomanor’s credentials and with last year’s experience Daniels and Ayomanor could be not only an exciting one two combination but excite the ACC if they can turn it around from last season?

Damien Marttinez put on a show for Oregon State Saturday, rushing for 146 yards and a career-best four touchdowns for the No. 12 Beavers, as they trounced Stanford 62-17 at Corvallis, Ore.

Bears Drag the Cougars up the Hill and Maul Them 42-39, on Senior Day in the East Bay

Cal Bears running back Jaydn Ott leaps into the end zone to score against the Washington State Cougars at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Sat Nov 11, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Michael Roberson

BERKELEY, Calif. — The California Golden Bears (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12) honored their senior players with a clawbiter win over conference foe Washington State Cougars (4-6, 1-6 Pac-12) in front of 38,155 fans at Memorial Stadium.

The Bears were generous guest by deferring the ball to the Cougars, after winning the coin toss. Apparently WASU didn’t appreciate the kind gesture and gave the gift right back.

Less tha three minutes into the contest, Cougars’ junior quarterback Cameron Ward fumbled on 4th & 1. Freshman running back and special teamer, Cade Uluave forced the fumble and returned it for a 51-yard TD. That quickly, the Bears were up 7-0 without possessing the ball yet.

When Cal did get their first possession, they absolutely took advantage of their opportunity. Redshirt freshman QB Fernando Mendoza tossed a six yard TD pass to fellow R-FR TE Jack Endries. Less than ten minutes of the first quarter, the Bears were up by two touchdowns, 14-0.

With 17 seconds left in the first, Ward was able to redeem himself a bit. He scored a three yard TD on a QB keeper. At the end of 15, the Cougars cut the deficit in half, 14-7.

Early in the second quarter sophomore RB Jaydn Ott fumbled into the endzone, as he was trying to score, fortuitously his teammate R-JR lineman Brian Driscoll recovered the ball and was awarded the touchdown. They went up 21-7 and scored two touchdowns on two fumbles.

Cameron Ward came back a few minutes later and threw a 13-yard TD to junior TE Cooper Mathers. Washington State got within seven, 21-14, and Ward was in position to actually take the lead, but he fumbled again.

Mendoza hit Ott for a 13-yard TD and Cal was back up by two touchdowns, 28-14. The Bears were expecting to go into the locker room up by 14, but the Cougars scored another touchdown at the end of the quarter..

Redshirt freshman QB John Mateer rushed in for five yards to paydirt, and the Cougars trailed by seven again. At the half, California lead 28-21.

Cal opened up the third with possesion of the ball; however, they did the same thing Washington State did to open the game…FUMBLE!. Mendoza coughed up the ball within the first minute of the second half, and WSU recovered the ball.

Redshirt junior kicker Dean Janikowski nailed a 28-yard field goal, bringing his team within four. At the end of three, California led 28-24.

Early in the fourth, Janikowski missed a FG. Cal took the ball downfield quickly into Cougars’ territry. Ott has a 52-yard run, then scored from the five yard line, putting his bears up by 11, 35-24.

Cameron Ward had the ball in his hands again trying to cut into the double-digit lead, but that did not go as planned. For the second time in the game, he fumbled and a defensive TD occured. This time junior DB Nohl Williams reached the endzone after carrying it for 52 yards. 42-24 Cal.

Ward answered back with a 212-yard TD loft to redshirt junior Josh Kelly, and they converted the two point attempt. The pulled within ten, 42-32.

Cal’s Ott fubled again, but this time the Cougars recovered the ball. Ward came right back and threw a five yard TD to RS FR RB Djouvensky Schlembaker, bringing the road team within three, 42-39.

With a chance to tie the game at 50 seconds left in the game, Janikowski missed a 48-yarder. Cal got the ball back with the chance to seal the game,

Cal could not make the clock hit zero, so the Cougars had one last chance. With :04 left on the clock, Ward’s desperation Hail Mary was picked off by the ubiquitous Cade Uluave. GAME OVER and the Bears win a close one to the cats from the Great Northwest, 42-39.

Cal wii next be in action across the Bay trying to keep possession of the Axe, as they will battle Stanford Saturday November 18 at TBD. The Cougars head back to Pullman, WA to host Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes Friday, November 17 at 7:30 PDT.

Note: Cal’s Jaydn Ott rushed for 167 yards against the Cougars, and has amassed 1016 on the season. QB Fernando Mendoza, who threw two TDs himself, gave praise to his star running back. “He is spectacular, and he will be playing on Sundays.” Uttered Mendoza.

WSU’s Cameron Ward threw the ball a whopping 59 times, completing 34 for 354 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a rushing TD.

Stanford Mauled by BYU in Season Finale on the Farm, 35-26

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calf. — The Stanford Cardinal (3-9/1-8 P12) were the prey to the prolific pouncing of the Brigham Young University Cougars (7-5), on a late night in the final game of the 2022 season. 35-26.

The Cougars got on the scoreboard (7-0) just over three minutes into the contest with a 19-yard scramble by junior quarterback Jaren Hall.  That wasn’t the end of their scoring barrage, as they proceeded to score a touchdown on all of their four possessions (28) in the first half.

Hall also tossed two TD’s to sophomore tight end Isaac Rex, and junior running back Hinckley Ropati rushed for a 43 yard scoring burst.

The Cardinal tallied their points on a 1-yard TD rush by sophomore running back Mitch Leigber and two field goals (34 & 54 yards) by junior kicker Joshua Karty.  Joshua hit the longer field goal with one second to go in the half, but unfortunately missed the extra point on the aforementioned touchdown.  At the half, 28-12 BYU.

The second half started off very blazay, as both teams failed to change the digits on the scoreboard in the third quarter.

However, the final stanza had plenty of excitement, as Stanford tried to close the gap.

BYU added to their total (35) with a 25-yard touchdown run by junior receiver Puka Nacua, putting them up by 23.

Stanford fought back with two consecutive TD’s to get the deficit down by nine points, 35-26, but the time on the clock was not on their side.

Freshman QB Ashton Daniels sneaked in for a 1-yard TD, and junior quarterback Tanner McKee rifled a 7-yard TD to senior receiver Brycen Tremayne, but it wasn’t enough after 60 minutes of action.

The cold Thanksgiving Weekend evening ended with a 9-point loss by the home team.  Final score from the Farm, BYU 35, Stanford 26.

The Cardinal ended the season with three wins of their twelve games (.250), while the Cougars won 7 of their 12 contests, which all but guarantees they will have postseason play in the not too distant future.

Stanford’s Tanner Mckee threw for 310 yards and a TD.  Brycen Tremayne had 130 receiving yards and a touchdown.

BYU’s Jaren Hall threw two touchdown passes and ran for one.   Chris Brooks rushed for 164 yards and Isaac Rex caught two TD passes.

The Cardinal will have to forget this season and WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR for a better result in 2023.

Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel Dullum: After Crushing win against Stanford last week Bears face a tough Bruins offense Saturday in the Southland

Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garber (7) throws against the Stanford Cardinal defense in first half action on Sat Nov 20, 2021 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto (AP News file photo)

Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 Daniel, the Cal Bears (4-6) last Saturday in the Big Game crushed the Stanford Cardinal (3-8) 41-11 after Cal has won three of it’s last four games do you view this game as one more brick in the wall a good push toward getting a bowl game birth?

#2 Daniel, Cal quarterback Chase Garbers threw 17-26 for 246 yards, two touchdowns, one interception. It was his first game back since the two week hiatus when over 24 players were out for Covid 19 protocols forcing Cal to play red shirts and call ups against the Arizona Wildcats (1-8) in a game they lost Nov 6th 10-3 and to cancel the following week’s game and win the Big Game last Sat Nov 20th.

#3 It was pretty much landslide game for the Bears last Sunday getting scoring 14 points in the second quarter, 13 points in the third quarter, and 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal defense just couldn’t stop Cal on their home field.

#4 One of the luxories that Garbers had last Saturday against Stanford was he had time in the pocket to throw and he was able to find a target just about every time dropping back.

#5 Cal takes on the UCLA Bruins (7-4) the Bruins have done their own crushing on offense in their last two games taking out the Colorado Buffaloes (3-7) 44-20 and the USC Trojans (4-6) 62-33. UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson threw for 349 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions against the Trojans.

Michigan Wolverines quarterback Cade McNamara gets a pass away in front of  Penn State defensive end Arnold Ebiketie (17) on Sat Nov 13, 2021 at Penn State (AP News photo)

On the NCAAF podcast with Michelle:

#1 No.6 Michigan Wolverines (9-1) keep rolling this time they bested the Penn State (6-4) Nittany Lions 21-17.Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara was 19-29 for 217 yards, and three touchdowns. Good defense by the Wolverines held the Nittany Lions to two field goals in the first half while they scored a touchdown in each of the second, third, and fourth quarters.

#2 There was no mercy rule for the New Mexico State Aggies (1-9) who got crushed by the Alabama Crimson Tide (9-1) 59-3. The Aggies only bright spot in this one was they were able to shutout Alabama in the third quarter. The Crimson Tide used four passers in the game. Starter Bryce Young went 21-23 for 270 yards and five touchdowns.

#3 The No.5 Cincinnati Bearcats (10-0) maintained their perfect record taking to the South Florida Bulls (2-8) 45-28. The Bearcats kept pouring it on with 17 points in the second quarter and 14 points in the fourth quarter. Bearcats quarterback Desmond Ridder went 31-39 for 304 yards and two touchdowns.

Cal Bears Football podcast with Daniel Dullum: Cal-USC postponement gives Bears a week to prepare for Stanford

Cal Bears head coach Justin Wilcox stands on the sidelines with his players against the Oregon State Beavers on Sat Oct 30, 2021photo. Wilcox said the team followed all the Covid 19 protocols but nonetheless Sat Nov 13, 2021 game against USC has been postponed to Dec 4, 2021 (AP News file photo)

On the Cal Bears Football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Whose dumbfounded the most in the Cal Bears (3-6) Covid 19 situation head coach Justin Wilcox who said the team followed protocols or the other head scratcher how did the team contract Covid 19 that forced them to postpone this Saturday’s game with USC (4-5).

#2 Either way Daniel the Bears get a week off after that grueling game in Tucson where Cal quarterback Ryan Glover just couldn’t get any offensive traction going against the struggling Arizona Wildcats (1-8).

#3 The key thing in the game against the Wildcats the Bears who were missing over 24 players due to Covid 19 protocols coach Wilcox had a rough time getting second stringers, practice squad players and back up to jell in what some would call a thrown together situation.

#4 How important will this week be for the Bears to regroup from last week’s loss in Arizona get a week off and prepare for the Big Game against the Stanford Cardinal (3-6) at Stanford Stadium next Sat Nov 13. The Cardinal are coming off that horrendous loss to the Utah Utes (6-3) 57-7 and are looking for a better game. How do you see the Bears and Cardinal matching up next week?

#5 Lastly Cal quarterback Chase Garbers will have had two weeks off the first week against Arizona where he sat out for Covid 19 protocols and this Saturday for the same reasons. Enough time to recover from the Covid issues and start throwing the rock in preparation against the Cardinal.

Cal Bears Football podcast with Daniel Dullum: Oregon State win for Cal was a great test of will for Bears

Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garbers drops back to pass against the Oregon State Beavers on Sat Oct 30, 2021 at Arizona in Tucson this Sat Nov 5, 2021 (AP News photo)

On the Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel looking at the Cal Bears (3-5) winning their last two games is this a vast improvement after losing three in a row?

#2 The Bears were coming off a healthy 26-3 win against the Colorado Buffaloes (2-6) to start the first of two wins and in convincing fashion 26-3 and after losing three in a row Cal hosted the Oregon State Beavers (5-3) and won what most critics have said was a big test going back to Memorial Stadium.

#3 The Beavers coming into Cal last Sat Oct 30th had won five of their last six games and had defeated some of the Pac 12’s most challenging teams like the Utah Utes (5-3 and first place) and USC (4-4) for Cal to defeat them 39-25 had to be the Bears biggest win of the season so far.

#4 Daniel, talk about Cal quarterback Chase Garbers he had a big day last week against the Beavers throwing 17-26 for 262 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The point that he didn’t have any interceptions says the O line was giving him lots of time to throw three touchdowns.

#5 This Sat Nov 6 in Tucson the Cal Bears take on the Arizona Wildcats (0-8) a 12 noon kick off Daniel your in Arizona right now. The Wildcats have not won a single game this year and are starting to feel the pressure. The defense simply could not hold USC in their last game and Wildcats quarterback Will Plummer was 20-34 for 264 yards, no touchdowns and no picks. How do you see this match up this Saturday.

Saturday, October 30, 2021

California took a giant step toward attaining bowl eligibility on Saturday, as the Golden Bears fought off a late charge from Oregon State and defeated the Beavers 39-25 at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.

Cal not only turned in its top offensive performance of the season, but the defense stepped up as well, forcing three turnovers and blocking a punt.

Elijah Hicks and Nate Rutchena each picked off a pass for the Bears, while Marqez Bimage strpped the ball from Beavers running back B.J. Baylor.

The Golden Bears (3-5 overall, 2-3 Pac-12) took a 31-17 lead into the fourth quarter, but Beavers quarterback Chance Nolan found Trevon Bradford open up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown, Nolan ran for the 2-point conversion, pulling OSU to within 31-25 with 12 minutes to play.

With 6:40 remaining, Cal answered with a 2-yard scoring pass from Chase Garbers to Christopher Brooks. A successful run by Brooks on the 2-point conversion made it a two-possession game.

Cal built a 10-0 first-quarter lead on a Garbers 3-yard touchdown run and a 45-yard field goal by Dario Longhetto. One minute into the second quarterm Everett Hayes kicked a 29-yard field goal, but the Bears responded with an 8-yard TD run by Damien Moore, giving Cal a 17-3 lead.

Oregon State (5-3, 3-2) cut the Bears’ lead to 17-10 when Bradford hauled in a scoring pass from Nolan with 1:15 left in the first half.

Three minutes into the third quarter, Cal extended its lead to 24-10 on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Garbers to Brooks. At 3:50 of the third quarter, Deshaun Fenwick’s 4-yard TD run brought the Beavers to within 24-17. Garbers responded with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Clark with 11 seconds left in the quarter.

Garbers was 17-for-26 for 262 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Moore carried 11 times for 111 yards, and Brooks finished with 88 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Clark caught 5 passes for 90 yards.

Nolan was 15 of 26 for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and was picked off twice and sacked once. Bradford caught six passes for 124 yards and two scores.

Next week, Cal travels to Tucson to face Arizona.
