Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal survive second half against Utes for win

gostanford.com photo

On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry:

#1 Jerry how important was it that Stanford (19-9) was coming off two wins over the Washington schools and then facing a team they had trouble with the last time they met in the Utah Utes (15-3) and got the victory 70-62.

#2 Like your headline read last night the Cardinal led from wire to wire in this one and never looked back it looked like the Cardinal executed on defense to hold the Utes back just enough to get a eight point win.

#3 In the second half the Utes fought right back outscoring the Cardinal 40-36 and it was just a margin of error that could have cost the Cardinal in that second half

#4 Head coach Jerod Haase said the game was not a thing of beauty but the Cardinal hung on just enough to win it

#5 It doesn’t get any easier as the Cardinal host the Colorado Buffaloes (21-7) Sunday night at Maples Jerry tell us how you see this match up.

LAS VEGAS–The Washington Huskies sent their head coach out on a good note.

Washington (8-5) beat up the Mountain West champion Boise State Mustangs 38-7 in the Las Vegas Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Huskies head coach Chris Petersen surprisingly announced his retirement from Washington on December 2nd, but agreed to coach the Huskies for his final game in the Las Vegas Bowl.

“It’s never about one person,” said Petersen about his last game.  “It’s about the team playing really, really well.”

Petersen formerly was the head coach at Boise State and went 92-12 from 2006 to 2013.  He led the Broncos to two undefeated season in 2006 and 2009.

“For us to finish on this note, I just feel really good for the guys that are leaving this program and the guys that are coming back,” said Petersen.

Redshirt junior quarterback Jacob Eason led the Huskies throwing for 210 yards and one touchdown.

“It was awesome just the way this whole team played,” said Eason.  “I play well and this team plays well.  Overall we just played well and efficient and got the result that we wanted.”

The Huskies started the scoring in the first quarter with Eason hitting Andre Baccellia on a slant for a 17 yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

Washington later scored in the second quarter on a pitch sweep to running back Salvon Ahmed, who beat the outside contain and sprinted into the right corner of the end zone to go up 14-0.  The Huskies added a field goal late in the second to go into halftime up 17-0.

“Our guys played hard and they were ready to go out there and play, but as coaches, we didn’t do a good enough job to make the adjustments that we needed to do,” said Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin.  “I am proud of our guys”.

Boise State freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier struggled in the first half throwing for just 87 yards and two interceptions sparking a quarterback change to redshirt senior Jaylon Henderson.

Henderson led an eleven play, 77 yard drive in the third quarter for the Mustang’s only points of the game on a 10 yard touchdown pass to running back George Holani.

The Mustang loss dropped Boise State to 12-2 on the season, snapping a six game winning streak.

Game Notes:

  • Washington defensive back Elijah Molden was named the game’s MVP with nine tackles and one interception
  • This was the 28th straight and final Las Vegas Bowl played at Sam Boyd Stadium
  • Sam Boyd Stadium seats 36,800
  • The Las Vegas Bowl will move to the currently under construction Allegiant Stadium in 2020, home of the Oakland Raiders and the UNLV Running Rebels

San Jose State spreads holiday cheer in hospital pediatric unit

San Jose State football linebackers Tysyn Parker and Alii Matau and gymnasts Chelsey Andrada, Jada Mazury and Emma Milne spent an afternoon after final exams distributing toys to children in the pediatric unit of Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Gatos, Calif.

Bags of toys and donations to purchase additional gifts were collected at an athletics department-hosted student-athlete party prior to final exams.

“The stuff they have to go through on a daily basis is pretty tough. The fact they have to spend the holidays in the hospital and possibly fight every day for their life is tough. I don’t think I would be able to do it as an adult. For then to do it as a young kid, it’s hard,” said Parker, one of the football team’s most active players in the Beyond Football program.

“If it’s just me showing up and giving them a toy, see a smile, and give them a little bit of hope, I can make a difference.”

HOSPITAL CEO THANKS THE SPARTANS
“It’s absolutely wonderful to have San Jose State here to help our pediatric patients recover. The kids really enjoy seeing the athletes come in and share time with them and their families,” said Joe DeSchryver, Good Samaritan Hospital Chief Executive Officer and a close friend of San Jose State football head coach Brent Brennan.

“It’s actually unique to have visitors come and see our patients. We have musicians that come here at times, but we’re very fortunate that San Jose State reached out to us (through Beyond Football coordinator Tobruk Blaine) and provided the community with good will through the Beyond Football program. We’re very excited to have them here.”

“It was very humbling to see the families and kids here. We just got to talk to the kids a little bit, but they were mostly excited about their new toys. I was happy to see that,” said Andrada, who has experienced spreading holiday cheer to less fortunate families in her hometown of Benicia, Calif.

The visit consisted of hospital staff escorting the Spartan contingent of the five student-athletes, Coach Brennan and his wife Courtney Brennan, director of football operations Ben Thienes, Blaine from Beyond Football, and director of football digital communications Cam Radford to patients’ room in the pediatric unit.

GIVING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN RECEIVING
“I love seeing the kids happy. I remember when I was younger the struggles my family and I went through. They always provided my brother and I with toys and gifts and it brightened up the mood. Now, I can return the favor to children in need. It puts a smile on my face,” said Matau, who remembers handing out Christmas dinners as a teenager in church-sponsored events. Matau credits his parents with instilling a sense of philanthropy through his family.

“My parents said giving is more important than receiving. And, I can feel that, especially the last couple of years when I stuff to give. It was just awesome to give back. I love giving.”

“It meant a lot for all of us to be here and help the kids, wish them a Merry Christmas and happy holidays, because they will remember it for the rest of their lives. It’s important to give back to the community,” said Mazury, a freshman who has volunteered at food banks in San Jose and at home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Cardinal bounce back with hoop win over Seahawks 72-54

Stanford returned to the win column in men’s basketball on Sunday, as the Cardinal defeated UNC-Wilmington 72-54 in non-conference play at Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal are off to their best start since 2011, when they won 10 of their first 11 contests.

Oscar da Silva netted a career-high 26 points, as the Cardinal bounced back from their only loss of the season. Da Silva was 11 of 14 from the field and grabbed five rebounds despite missing a few minutes early in the second half after taking an errant elbow to the head.

Spencer Jones scored 17 points, including a career-high five f3-pointers for the Cardinal (8-1). Freshman Tyrell Terry was in early foul trouble, but still scored nine points while collecting four rebounds and five assists.

Marten Linssen and Jaylen Sims scored 12 points each to lead the Seahawks, who have not defeated a Pac-12 team since 2006.

Stanford never trailed in the game, leading by as many as 25. It was UNC-Wilmington’s fifth game in 10 days, and, after falling behind 12-0, the Seahawks never caught up. The Cardinal held a 33-30 rebounding edge.

The Cardinal led by 19 in the first half behind the inside-outside games of da Silva and Jones. Jones sank four of his 3-pointers in the first half, as Stanford built a 38-19 lead.

The two head coaches — Jerod Haase of Stanford and C.B. McGrath of Wilmington — were teammates for two years while playing at Kansas, and coached together for 14 seasons at North Carolina.

Stanford has nearly two weeks off before its next game on Dec. 14 at San Jose State.
