STANFORD, Calif.– The Stanford Cardinal (4-6, 0-2 Pac 12) prevented the visiting University of Wisconsin – Green Bay Phoenix (2-10, 1-1 Horizon) from rising inside Maples Pavilion and manhandled them 85-40.

Stanford jumped on their Midwest opponent quickly in dominating fashion, including a 15-0 run and a lead as lofty as 23 points.

Green Bay shot a dismal 29% from the field the initial 20 minutes of the contest, as well as turning the ball over a whopping 15 times at the behest of the Cardinal stout defense.

Conversely, Stanford shot an impressive 65% from the floor and never trailed in the first half.

The second half Stanford did not rest on their laurels, they actually increased the insurmountable lead to 45 points, despite shooting a lower percentage in part two of the game.

The Cardinal continued the onslaught, forcing a total of 27 turnovers and holding them to a paltry 27% shooting for the game.

After the Phoenix were aggressively subdued, that large 45-point margin was also the difference in the final score, 85-40 Stanford.

Four players scored in double-figures for Stanford: Senior forward Spencer Jones (10): junior forward Brandon Angel (10) & five rebounds; sophomore guard Jarvis Moss (10) and freshman guard Ryan Agarwal led everyone (11).

UW – Green Bay was led by junior guard Randy Tucker, with ten points and seven rebounds, while his sophomore teammate Cade Meyer also tallied ten points and grabbed six rebounds.

Stanford will head down to the Lone Star state to take on the Texas Longhorns in Dallas, Sunday December 18, which will be a homecoming of sorts for two players.  Sophomore forward Harrison Ingram (Dallas) and the aforementioned Ryan Agarwal (Coppell) are excited about the road trip.

The Phoenix will stay on the west coast and travel up to Corvallis, OR to take on the Oregon State Beavers, also Sunday December 18.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel Dullum: Cardinal men host Green Bay Friday; Cardinal women go for 5 wins in a row Sunday

Gonzaga guard Kaylynne Truong (14) is fouled by Stanford guard Agnes Emma-Nnopu during the first half action at Maples Pavilion on Sun Dec 4, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel:

#1 MBB the Cardinal (3-6) lost a close contest 68-64 to the Arizona State Sun Devils (10-1) in their last game Sun Dec 4th. The Cardinal got good efforts from Spencer Jones 13 points and Harrison Ingram and Michael Jones both scored 12 points.

#2 The Cardinal face the Green Bay Phoenix (2-8) who are struggling in their own right this Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal have won only three games and have the home floor advantage.

#3 Stanford women (10-1) have won four straight games, five of their last six games including a win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (7-2) in their last game 84-63. The Cardinal are getting offense and defense on both sides of the basketball and it might be safe to say look for this team to be a huge threat when March comes rolling around.

#4 The Cardinal match up against the Tennessee Vols (6-5) who have won four of their last five games. Tip is a 12 noon at Maples Pavilion how do you see this match up on Sunday.

#5 On Monday the Cardinal football team announced a new head coach Troy Taylor who comes from Sacramento State. Taylor help bring three Big Sky titles after taking over the Hornets football program in Dec 2018. Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir said “Troy’s credentials stood out”

Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Michael Roberson: Taylor says Cardinal will be “champions here”

Stanford Athletic Director Bernard Muir (left) and newly hired head coach Troy Taylor (right) at Mon Dec 12, 2022 press conference introducing Taylor at Stanford University (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson:

Stanford Cardinal newly hired head coach Troy Taylor said during Monday’s press introduction that the Cardinal has a bright future and “We will be champions here. I don’t know when it will happen, but we will be champions here.” Taylor emphasized that the direction of the Cardinal is headed in the right direction despite what some people might say of the football program.

With the NIL deals and college football teams that are just all about offense with student transfer portals things in the NCAA have vastly changed impacting the way things used to be done in college football leaving the Stanford program left behind. The Cardinal attendance.

Taylor is pushing the envelope to make the Cardinal who were once bowl bound and who had many former student athletes graduate to the NFL. Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir said that the Cardinal program will be heavily involved in the NIL and transfer portal.

What was most impressive of what Muir did was hire Taylor over NFL and power 5 schools coaches. At Sacramento State Taylor didn’t have winning records when Taylor joined that program in December 2018 he got them three Big Sky titles and that impressed Muir that Taylor was able to turn the Sacramento State program around and he could do the same with more resources at Stanford.

The Cal Bears guard Joel Brown drives against Eastern Washington at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Wed Dec 7, 2022 (Cal Bears photo)

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael:

#1 The Cal Bears (0-9) received bad news before Wednesday’s contest against Eastern Washington when they announced that leading scorer Devin Askew and freshman ND Okafor would be unavailable due to health and safety protocols.

#2 Then the Bears coughed up 17 turnovers and never led in a 50-48 loss to the Eagles of the Big Sky Conference, a team they had beaten in all three, previous meetings.

#3 The Bears trailed 45-36 with 5:22 remaining only to rally and tie the contest at 48 with 33 seconds left on Joel Brown’s made free throw. But Tyreese Davis’ layup on EWU’s next possession gave the visitors their winning margin.

#4 In the final seconds, Kuany Kuany missed a three-pointer that would have given the Bears a lead. Sam Alajiki’s foul put EWU’s Casey Jones on the foul line, but he missed both attempts. Brown’s desperation 3-point attempt then fell short at the final buzzer as Cal loses by two points 50-48.

#5 Cal hosts the Butler Bulldogs (8-2) on Saturday afternoon at 2pm at Haas Pavilion how tough will that one be for the Bears as they seek their first win of the season?

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Starving Cal looking for first win against Eastern Washington Wednesday night

Cal Bears Lar Thiemann take a shot from the free throw line against the Arizona Wildcats on Sun Dec 4, 2022 (CalMBBall photo)

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael:

The Cal Bears are preparing to host Eastern Washington this Wednesday night at Haas Pavilion and Cal is hoping to get in the win column which Cal has the home floor advantage. Despite the fact that their 0-9 right up there for the worst starts for a power five team.

The Bears have actually played better the last couple of games decently against USC for 31 minutes and went cold missed 13 straight shots and they went into Arizona and it was probably their best performance of the year on the road. To play on the road in the Pac 12 at the McKale Center it wasn’t a win for Cal but it was a competitive game.

Not too many people would have given Cal a fighting chance to challenge the Wildcats but they were giving them a good battle.

Brink scored 14 points to go with a season-high 16 rebounds, while Demetre bagged 17 points, including a career-best five 3-pointers. The Cardinal (10-1 overall) have won five consecutive games after suffering their only loss of the season, an overtime defeat by No. 1 South Carolina on Nov. 20.

Southern California forward Harrison Hornery (30) and California forward ND Okafor (22) compete for a rebound during the first half at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Wed Nov 30, 2022 (AP News photo)

#1 The Cal Bears are on of seven NCAA schools who are winless, the Bears are missing five guards and have two active on the roster which is burdening the defense.

#2 Cal has lost game no more 11 points in the previous eight contests they’ve played so far the way you’ve seen things this season can they get that number down a bit?

#3 Michael, before the Cal-USC game Wednesday night it was announced that the Bears would have three inactive players which is cause for concern the scratches guard Jarred Hyder, forward Sam Alajiki, and guard Jalen Celestine.
