The San José State Spartans are looking for their fourth win in five games when they take on Montana on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans were on a three-game winning streak prior to losing to Cal Poly in overtime on Wednesday night. Following the game, the Spartans will head to North Dakota State for the final contest of a three-game road trip.

The first half for the Spartans was a rare form for them this season where they were playing from behind. Going 9-25 from the field, it looked like nothing went right offensively for the Spartans and Montana took full advantage. Montana hauled 22 rebounds and went 48% from the field with Money Williams scoring 16 points in the first half for Montana. The half ended 36-24 Montana with the lead.

The second half was a bigger runaway for Montana as at one point in the half the Grizzlies were up 60-37. The Spartans tried to put their foot on the gas, but the potholes Montana set up early slowed San Jose State down. 52% from the field, but that didn’t matter as Montana forced nine turnovers and even though Montana only scored seven points off those turnovers, it was enough to halt any progress SJSU tried to create.

Even the guys that are usual scorers for the Spartans were quiet. Trey Anderson, Tibet Gorener, and MJ Amey Jr. combined for 10 points this game and even Alvaro Cardenas’s nine points was just a piece of floss in an avalanche. The final score ended up being 75-58 Montana.

Not the way the Spartans wanted to rebound after the last loss, but the result leaves them to fall to 5-4. The next game for San Jose State will be against North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota, Monday, December 4th.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson: Notre Dame crushes Stanford 56-23; Game was over by third quarter

Stanford Cardinal quarterback Aston Daniels (14) takes off from a pursuing Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Marist Liufau (8) in first half action at Stanford Stadium on Sat Nov 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

On Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson:

#1 The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-3) dominated the Stanford Cardinal (3-9) pretty much from beginning to end at Stanford Stadium for a crushing 56-23 win. The Cardinal struggled to hold back the Notre Dame offense in the second and third quarter.

#2 Fighting Irish quarterback Sam Hartman pretty much had his way with the Stanford defense throwing for 8-14 and 140 yards and two touchdowns.

#3 It was running back Audric Estime everytime he got the football he found daylight and lots of it scoring four touchdowns against a Stanford defense who tried to hold on but he was practically able to shake them off and scored four touchdowns.

#4 Stanford’s only double digit quarter was the first quarter when they scored 13 points but were shutdown shutdown the rest of the way scoring only a field goal in the second quarter and touchdown in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame just dominated on both sides of the football on Saturday night.

#5 Michael this concludes the Stanford football season where they lost their last six out of they’re last seven games to conclude the 2023 season for head coach Troy Taylor it was a season he hoped to get turned around but ended up well below .500 at 3-9.

Stanford Cardinal game wrap: Cardinal Could Not Confiscate Axe from Visiting Cross-Bay Rival Bears, 27-15; Stanford Continues losing Streak

Cal Bears offensive lineman celebrates after the win against the Stanford Cardinal at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto on Sat Nov 18, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Michael Roberson

STANFORD, Calif. — A crowd of 52,971 souls observed the Stanford Cardinal (3-8, 2-7 Pac-12) unsuccessfully attempt to retrieve the Axe from the longtime Bay Area and Conference opponent, California Golden Bears (5-6, 3-5 Pac-12), 27-15.

Stanford’s defense was in effect early, as they stymied Cal’s first drive with a fourth down stop deep in their own territory. The offense was not able to capitalize on the momentous moment.

The Cardinal defense recorded an apparent gigantic play when Bears’ redshirt freshman quarterback was sacked, fumbled, and returned for a touchdown, or on the goal line. However, just as it did for the then Oakland Raiders over 20 years ago, the turnover was nullified and considered an incomplete pass. Sounds familiar, Bay Area fans? (Tom Brady & Tuck Rule)

Mendoza was not only thankful for that overturned play, but he took full advantage of the gift, With nearly five minutes left in the quarter, he tossed a 9-yard TD to redshirt sophomore slot receiver Trond Grizzel. 7-0 Bears, late in the first.

The ever reliable Stanford kicker, Joshua Karty, delivered again, as he booted a 44-yard FG with :22 remaining on the clock. The home team got the score within four, 7-3, and that was the margin when the quarter ended.

Fairly early in the second quarter, Mendoza launched a 54-yard bomb to Grizzell again, putting the Bears up 14-3. Nearly six minutes later, Mendoza completed another pass. Unfortunately it was Stanford’s senior cornerback Zahran Manley.

The Cardinal did not do much with the stolen possession at that point. However with less than a minute left in the half, Karty and his magical foot were there for his teammates. He converted a 53-yarder to bring them within an eight point deficit, 14-6. The Cardinal found themselves a touchdown and 2-point conversion from a tie with the East Bay crew at the midway juncture of the game.

Late in the third quarter the Cardinal sturdy (Tree) Defense struck again. Cal’s Mendoza was scrambling and was blasted by senior linebacker Tristan Sinclair. He forced a fumble by Mendoza, but unfortunately that tremendous hit was deemed as TARGETING, so the fumble was erased and Sinclair was ejected.

Mendoza took his second opportune scenario and drove his team down to the 1-yard line. There he handed the ball off to his thousand yard gaining sophomore running back for the touchdown. California was up 15 (21-6), less than a minute after the controversial play.

Stanford was on the attack, also in less than 60 seconds when sophomore QB Ashton Daniels unleashed a 41-yard TD pass to freshman WR Tiger Bachmeier. The failed 2-point conversion kept it a two possession game, 21-12.

For the third time and less than a minute left in each quarter, Karty kicked through the uprights from 50 yards away. After 45 minutes of game time, Cal still led 21-15.

The fourth quarter was preserving the lead for the Bears. Less than five minutes in, Mendoza lofted another TD pass. Junior WR Jeremiah Hunter was the chosen target for that scoring play. Cal took a 12-point advantage with a great deal of momentum to retain possession of the axe.

Ott had an opportunity to expand the lead to 19 or 20, but chose to take a knee before crossing the goal line. A gesture filled with sportsmanship; the Bears let the clock run out, and take the 27-15 victory and axe back to Berkeley.

Stanford will next be in action Saturday, November 25 here on the Farm, hosting the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at 4 PM PDT. California heads south to Los Angeles to take on the UCLA Bruins, on the same date at 7:30 PM PDT on ESPN.

Note: Upon my query to HC Troy Taylor about the ending of the Pac 12, he responded with: “It’s really sad that the conference, this is the end. But really happy that Cal along with us will be in the ACC together. We’ll be able to maintain an incredible rivalry.”

I asked Joshua Karty about the NFL: “Yeah, of course. The next level is my dream. It’s my goal to make it there, whether it’s after this year or after next year. But as of right now, I’ll focus on Notre Dame for next week.” Stated Kicker Joshua Karty.

Cal Bears game wrap: Cal Retains the Ax Beating Stanford 27-15

The 126th Big Game went to the California Bears (4-6) winning their third Big Game in a row. Some great Bears offense and some equally good defense tilted the game in favor of Cal. The final score was 27-15. This was Cal’s third big game win in a row.

Saturday afternoon the Bears headed to Stanford Stadium “the Farm” for the 126th “Big Game” against the Cardinal. Cal is coming off a 42-39 win over Washington State in thanks to their defense coming up big returning two fumbles for touchdowns and recording six sacks.

This was without doubt was their best effort of the season. This was Cal’s second straight win as they beat Washington State in their last game on Sat Nov 11. Cal picked up their fourth win in the last six Big Games and their fourth straight Big Game win. While Stanford does have home field advantage, the Bears are favored significantly.

The Bay Area weather had little impact on the game with light rain that was predicted over the course of the game. This was the last Big Game in the Pac 12. Cal has now retained the axe for the 2023 season their third straight season.

This is the biggest game for the two teams all season regardless of what their records show. The entire Bay Area was watching history being made in this colorful tradition.

Game recap: The Bears went on offense to start the opening quarter. Driving deep into Stanford territory Cal went on a fourth and two that failed. Both teams sparred through the first ten minutes of the quarter.

At 5:03 Bears quarterback Fernando Mendoza found Trond Grizzell for nine yards and the first touchdown of the game giving Cal the early 7-0 lead. With 0.22 seconds left in the first quarter Stanford kicker Joshua Karty hit a 44 yarder and after the first 15 minutes of play, the Bears had a 7-3 lead.

Early in the second quarter at 13:13 Mendoza again found Grizzell for a huge play of 54 yards and California had extended their lead to 14-3. Cal had scored twice through the air so far in the game so Stanford was having to defend not only the Cal passing game which had a great first half but also the rushing game. Stanford kicked a 53 yard Field Goal with 54 ticks left on the clock and the score at the half was 14-6 in favor of Cal.

Cal running back Jaydn Ott kicked it into high gear scoring a one yard run into the end zone at 5:45 in the third quarter giving the Bears a 21-6 lead. Ott had been relatively quiet in the first half but he came unleashed as the second half got underway.

Stanford did score twice in the third quarter but Cal retained the lead going into the final quarter. The Cardinal scored their first touchdown of the game at 4:25 going for the two point conversion which failed. They did score a field goal to end the third quarter, a 50 yard Karty kick. With one quarter left in the game California led 21-15.

The Bears would score one more time in the fourth quarter when Mendoza threw his third touchdown of the day an eight yard pass to Jeremiah Hunter to seal the win for Cal 27-15. The Bears had won their third Big Game in a row. The Ax would stay in Berkeley for another year.

Mendoza had a great day with three touchdowns throwing for 294 yards with one interception. Jaydn Ott despite a bit of a slow start in the first half finished in a flurry with 166 rushing yds.

Stanford struggled in this game with penalties and miscues and just could not handle the California defense. The long awaited game is now history and we will now look forward the 127th Big Game next year.

Montana State Bobcats 63 (2-1)

California Golden Bears 60 (2-2)

By Stephen Ruderman

The Bears were unable to capitalize on their big win Monday, as the Montana State Bobcats, led by Brandon Walker and his 26-point performance, came into Haas Pavilion to prevent Cal from getting a thrilling comeback win, as Montana State held on to win, 63-60.

Jalen Cone hit an early jumper to give Cal a 2-0 lead. Montana State came back to take a 4-2 lead, and a three ball by Fardaws Aimaq gave Cal the lead back at 5-4. A layup by Brandon Walker, who would just be getting started, put the Bobcats back ahead at 6-5, and they would hold the lead the rest of the night.

Montana State looked poised to pull away with the game early, as they opened their lead to 12-5, but Cal scored six unanswered points to close it to 12-11. Despite that, the Bobcats maintained a steady lead throughout the rest of the first period, never leading by more than six.

The Bobcats led 33-27 at the half, and they started to open up their lead again at the start of the second period, as a 9-3 run gave Montana State a 44-30 lead with 15:09 remaining.

Cal slowly chipped away into the latter half of the second period, but they got even closer, as a pair of free throws by Aimaq cut the deficit to 51-49 with 4:49 remaining.

There was a lot of scoring in the final few minutes. The Bobcats pulled out to a 57-51 lead with 3:19 remaining, but Jaylon Tyson, who shined for the Bears tonight with 27 points, led the charge for, and Cal came back to make it 63-60 with just 16 seconds remaining.

Following a foul by Cone, and a pair of missed free throws by Robert Ford for Montana State, Cone missed a three that would’ve tied the game with four seconds, and that would be it, as the Bobcats won it, 63-60.

Cone’s missed three-pointer highlighted a game in which the Bears made just three three-balls, down from 13 against Bakersfield Monday. Cone, who hit seven threes on Monday, hit just one tonight. Cone was 1-for-10 from beyond the arc, and scored just eight points.

Cal ends up going 2-2 on the opening homestand, and they will head to San Juan Capistrano for the SoCal Challenge starting Monday night, when they will take on the UTEP Miners for a very-late 9:30 tipoff.

Stanford Falls to Santa Clara 89-77

Tuesday night the Stanford Cardinal (2-1) took on the Santa Clara Broncos (3-0) in a battle of the unbeaten. Stanford led by slight margins for most of the game. They had led by as much as 12 points in the first half but it was the Broncos who pushed the pace eventually winning the game 89-77.

Tuesday night the Cardinal took on the Broncos at Maples Pavilion. Stanford is coming off a win Friday night against the (0-3) Sacramento Hornets 91-73. The Broncos are also coming off a win over St. Francis PA last Saturday 82-59.

In that game Carlos Marshall Jr. had the high score for Santa Clara with 25 points. Stanford kept an eye on Marshall. The Cardinal have a solid roster in Brandon Angel, Spencer Jones, Maxime Raynaud and Andre Stojakovic.

Stanford was highly favored. Angel had the high score in their last game against Sacramento finishing with 18 points with Jones, Raynaud and Stojakovic all scoring in double digits. Raynaud finished the game with seven rebounds. Both teams came into this game unbeaten. The Broncos came away with their record perfect and the Cardinal take their first loss.

Stanford hit the court starting this game with a shot from downtown from Stojakovic taking an early 3-0 lead. After taking a 28-16 lead at 12:08 the Cardinal let it all slip away and at 7:29 in the first half they were leading by a basket 30-28.

The Broncos took the lead once in the first half by a single point but Stanford hung onto the lead for the rest of the half. Santa Clara refused to go away threatening throughout the final seven minutes of play in the opening half. Stanford led at the half 46-44. Maxime Raynaud had the high for Stanford with 17 points.

The Broncos took the lead a couple of times in the second half but Stanford took the lead back every time but just could not establish a consistent rhythm and dictate the pace of this game. At 11:45 Santa Clara’s Adama Bal hit a shot from downtown and the Broncos went on to take a 62-57 lead.

This time it was the Broncos that threatened the pace of this game. This time it was Santa Clara that was holding small leads and extending their lead to 83-75 with less than a minute left in the game.

The Cardinal will next take on Eastern Wa again at Maples Friday night with tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

California Golden Bears 83 (2-1)

Following a tough loss to the University of Pacific Tigers, Jalen Cone shined with 23 points and seven three-pointers, as the Cal Bears beat the California State University of Bakersfield Roadrunners comfortably by a final of 83-63.

It was a quiet Monday night at Haas Pavilion both in the crowd, and on the court, as it took two minutes for either team to score. Devin Askew hit a three ball two minutes and 13 seconds into the game, and Cal struck first. Jalen Cone also hit a three to make it 6-0, but the Roadrunners scored seven unanswered points to take a 7-6 lead.

Cal bounced back and took a 13-9 lead. Ugnius Jerusevicius hit a free throw, and then Higgins hit a three for the Roadrunners to tie it at 13-13 with 11:55 left.

The score was then 16-16, and after Cone hit another three with 10:09 left, the Bears went on a roll. Cal went on a 36-21 run to go into the half up 49-34.

The Roadrunners scored five unanswered points to start the second period as part of a 7-1 run as they cut the score to 50-41, but Cal responded swiftly, and put the game away.

In addition to Cone’s performance, all five of Cal’s starters scored double digits, as the team hit 13 threes as a whole. Fardaws Aimaq scored 14 points; Jaylon Tyson scored 13; Devin Askew scored 12; and Grant Newell scored 10. Each starter also hit at least one three, as Askew and Newell both hit two, and Aimaq and Tyson hit one.

As for Bakersfield, Kaleb Higgins led the way with 22 points, but Cal’s defense kept the rest of the Roadrunners at bay.

Cal is back over .500 at 2-1, and the opening homestand will continue on Thursday, as the Bears will welcome the Montana State Bobcats to Berkeley for an 8:00 tipoff.

Cardinal Swats Away Pesky Hornets with Branches, 91-73; Avenges Football Team’s Loss

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal’s (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) bark was too thick for the swarming Sacramento State Hornets (0-2, 0-0 Big West) 91-73, also preventing them from building a nest inside Maples.

The flying bugs from the California state capital actually scored the first basket of the game, and led twice early. However, the home team was determined to keep them from being in front the rest of the first half.

During the Hornets’ brief lead, they also went on a 7-0 run, but that was subdued by the Cardinal’s 10-0 run. Both teams were perfect from the charity stripe; however, that was a miniscule 4-4. Sac State made 3, while Stanford made the other.free throw.

Stanford Senior forward Spencer Jones got his shooting stroke in motion, after making 0 field goals in the last game. He made two jumpers from beyond the arc, and managed to tally10 points in the first half.

Jones wasn’t the only Cardinal player to reach double-figures in scoring. Fellow senior forward Brandon Angel chipped in 10 points himself within the first 20 minutes of the contest.

Sacramento State was led by junior guard Zee Hamoda (16) as he made four 3s and his senior teammate Brandon Betson (8) drilled two from beyond the line.

Even though the Hornets outrebounded the Cardinal and made more threes, Stanford shot 55% from the field and led by as much as 10 points in the half. They settled for an eight point advantage at intermission, 47-39.

In the second half Stanford’s lead got as large as 19 points. Although the Hornets kept in buzzing distance for a brief time in the final half, the Cardinal was fairly in control of the Northern California battle.

Jones added five more points to his total, but left the game with an apparent ailment. HC Jerod Haase said that his 16+ minutes limitation was for precautionary reasons and possible injury status was undetermined at press time.

Projected Freshman Sensation Andrej Stojakovic, son of former NBA star Peja, had a breakout game in game two of his college career. He garnered 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in just under 26 minutes of play. He also shot over 50% from the floor.

Brandon Angel added eight points (18) to his halftime total and junior forward Maxime Raynaud scored 14 points, 7 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.

Sacramento State was led in scoring by Hamoda (21) and Betson (17). They also had two other players eclipse double-digits, Duncan Powell (14) and Bowyn Beatty (10)

At the final horn, the Cardinal was on top by 18 points, 91-73. Stanford stayed consistent in the second half, by remaining perfect (5-5) from the free throw line and shooting just under 56% from the field for the whole game.

Stanford will next be in action Tuesday, November 14 at Maples hosting the Santa Clara Broncos at 6 pm PDT. Sac State heads back to the capital city to host Pacific Union on the same date at 6:30 pm PDT.

Note: Graduate transfer Jerod Bynum has recorded 17 assists and 1 turnover (17:1) in his two games as a Cardinal hooper.

He also explained that he always wanted to be a Stanford player, but it didn’t work out until now. In addition, he is excited to be a part of the last year of the Pac – 12.

Coach Haas does not think his win against Sac State will provide a sense of redemption for his fellow head coach (Troy Taylor) of the football team of whom suffered an upset loss to them (Former Team) earlier in the school year.

Cardinal were Bullish Against Visiting Matadors, Pushing through their Cloak and Sword, 88-79

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) Red Attack could not be avoided by the California State University – Northridge Matadors (0-1, 0-0 Big West), as they won a back and forth contest, 88-79.

Stanford got out to an early lead the first couple minutes of the game, but that was short-lived.  CSUN was in front through the bulk of the first half.

Both teams had eight point leads, while the Matadors managed a 9-0 run and the Cardinal topped that with a 10-0 one of their own.  Although CSUN had the lead three times as long as Stanford, they managed to regain the lead before the end of the first 30 minutes of play.

Stanford senior Brandon Angel and junior Maxime Raynaud both were perfect from the field (4-4) in the first half, scoring 11 and 8 points respectively.  Newcomer and senior guard Jared Bynum also chipped in for his squad, tallying 7 points and 3 assists.

At recess, the home team had a five-point advantage, 43-38.  Stanford had to fight back and overcome the 3:1 ratio of not being the frontrunner, but they managed to take a slightly comfortable lead into the locker room.

Nearly three minutes into the second half, Stanford increased their lead to nine, and was looking to blow the game open.  However, the Matadors still had something under their muleta or cape.

CSUN fought back valiantly twice.  The first occasion they took a 63-62 lead near the midway point (9:43) of the second half.  Approximately four and a half minutes later they climbed the tree again to take a 2-point lead (73-71).

Now with about five minutes left in regulation, the Cardinal had to duplicate their late comeback in the first half leading at the whistle.  Stanford also performed a 13-0 run during the second stanza.

Senior Michael Jones was able to make that process come to fruition a little sooner (2:20) as his deep jumper put them up for good (80-79) and eventually added eight more to win by nine.  After 40 minutes of play, Stanford was the victor on the Farm. 88-79.

The Cardinal had ample contribution from the team.  Raynaud led the way with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks.  The aforementioned Jones had 20 points and Angel blessed the team with 18 points and 7 rebounds.  The new guy Jared Bynum gave 13 points and dropped 7 assists, with 0 turnovers in his Cardinal debut.

Graduate senior De’Sean Allen-Eikens led the Matadors with 22 points and 8 rebounds.

The Cardinal are next in action back at Maples Friday, November 10 (6 pm PDT) hosting Sacramento State.  The Matadors travel to Moscow, Idaho Thursday November 9 (6 pm MST) to take on the Idaho Vandals.
