Stanford pulled to within three points with seven minutes remaining in the second half, but Oregon made enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Oregon’s bench outscored Stanford’s 30-6, and the Ducks forced 13 Cardinal turnovers.

The Cardinal will play in Wednesday’s opening round of the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas.

#1 The 19th ranked UCLA Bruins pulled off an upset defeating the Stanford Cardinal on Friday night at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas 69-65 getting eliminated in from the tournament.

#3 The Bruins made a comeback on the Cardinal in second half play scoring 18 points in the third quarter and 29 in the fourth quarter to over come a 35-22 first half deficit.

#4 Kiki Rice led the way for the Bruins with 22 points, five rebounds, five assists, and made 12 of 13 free throws. Emily Bessoir was next with 14 points and six rebounds, Charisma Osborne had 12 points.

#5 The Cardinal had faced a number of upsets against USC, Washington, Utah, and UCLA in Pac 12 conference play. How surprising were these loses to coach Tara VanDerveer and the UCLA loss in particular?

Pac 12 Tournament podcast with Daniel Dullum: Stanford women take it to Ducks in 76-65 thriller

Stanford Cardinal center Cameron Brink (22) show her wide arm span as teammate guard Hannah Jump (33) and Oregon Ducks guard Chance Gray (2) look on at the Pac 12 Tournament in Las Vegas on Thu Mar 2, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel Dullum:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal women (28-4) picked up game one of the Pac 12 Tournament with a 76-65 win over the Oregon Ducks (17-14) on Thursday the Cardinal are coming into March rolling which is really no surprise to anyone.

#2 Cameron Brink once again led Stanford with 22 points she never got intimidated on any of the Ducks double teaming and was a key part of the reason why the Cardinal got the 11 point win.

#3 This past Tuesday Brink was named the Pac 12 defensive player of the year at this rate with her shot blocking could end up getting her the NCAA defensive player of the year.

#4 Taking a look at the prospects of Stanford’s chances of taking this game you could make that prediction as the Cardinal defense allowed the Ducks only nine points in the first quarter and and 15 in the second quarter. The Ducks could never really catch up with the Cardinal after the first half.

#5 The Cardinal are battling with the UCLA Bruins in game 2 of the Pac 12 Tournament the Bruins were defeated by the Cardinal in their last meeting 71-66 at Maples Pavilion on Mon Feb 20th. Will the Bruins be looking for blood in tonight’s game against the Cardinal?

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (12-16, 6-12 Pac-12) gave their four seniors a great sendoff, as they controlled the Washington Huskies (16-14, 8-11 Pac-12) 81-69, in Maples Pavilion.

Senior forward Spencer Jones wasted no time trying to make his last game on the Farm a memorable one, with his early attack (16 points) of the dogs from the Evergreen State.

During the first 20 minutes of play, the Cardinal led the entire half, aided by an 8-0 run and a margin as wide as 12 points, which was the advantage at recess, 38-26.

Jones topped all players with his tally, while Huskies’ senior forward Keion Brooks Jr. offered his squad 10 points.

The second portion of the contest Stanford extended the lead as high as 20 points, with Washington trying to chip away at the deficit throughout the game.

The Cardinal managed to hold on to the advantage and win by the same margin (12) as they had at the midway point, 81-69. They also shot an impressive 50% from 3pt. range (12-24), which explained their dominance over the visitors from the Great Northwest.

Several non-graduating players joined Jones (21) in double-figure scoring: Sophomore forward Maxime Raynaud (15), junior forward Brandon Angel (14), sophomore forward Harrison Ingram (11) and graduate transfer Michael Jones (10), who has another year of eligibility, despite being senior.

Stanford will play next in Corvallis Thursday, March 2 to take on Oregon State, while Washington hosts Washington State on the same date.

Drew Peterson hit 8-of-14 from the field and scored 21 points to go with seven rebounds. Reese Dixon-Waters, back from missing four games due to injury, scored 12 points, and contributed three rebounds and two assists.

The Cardinal return to Maples Pavilion for their final two home games of the season, hosting Washington State on Thursday and Washington on Saturday.

No. 2-ranked Stanford saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, as Washington prevailed 72-67 in Pac-12 women’s basketball.

It was the Huskies’ first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating UCLA on Feb. 23, 2020. It was also the Huskies’ first win over Stanford (22-3 overall, 10-2 Pac-12) since 2016.

Elle Ladine scored 21 points, and Dalayah Daniels made 15 points, and Hayley Van Dyke finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Haley Jones led Stanford with 18 points, and reserve Brooke Demetre had 15 points. Cameron Brink was held to 14 points and six rebounds.

Daniels sank a pair of free throws with 8 seconds to play, helping the Huskies (13-9 overall, 5-7 Pac-12) pull off the upset. The Huskies finished the second half with a 9-2 run. Lauren Schwartz sank a pair of free throws before Ladine made a layup to put Washington ahead with 1:40 to play.

Stanford led 17-8 after the first quarter, but the Huskies closed the first half with a 10-0 run and outscored the Cardinal 30-17 in the second quarter to take 38-34 lead into the break.

Washington then scored the first six points of the third quarter before a Brink layup ignited a 9-0 Stanford run. Brink’s three-point play at the end of the third quarter gave the Cardinal a 54-53 lead. But the Huskies outscored Stanford 19-13 in the fourth.

The Cardinal travel to Tucson on Thursday to face Arizona.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Cal hoping to get their offense up and running in Colorado tonight

Cal Bears small forward Sam Alajiki (24) gets a leg up against the Oregon Ducks on Wed Jan 18, 2023 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. Alajiki led Cal in scoring with 13 points against the Stanford Cardinal in their last game on Sat Jan 28th at Maples Pavilion at Stanford (KLC fotos)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 The last game was not quite the result that Cal Bears (3-18) head coach Mark Fox was looking for in a loss to the Stanford Cardinal (9-12) in Cal’s last game on Sat Jan 28th at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto 75-46. Fox was sure concerned about the defense that night.

#2 Only two Cardinal had double digits Maxime Raynaud (15 pts) and Ingram Harrison (14 pts) the Bears couldn’t stop Stanford’s offense in either the first or second half.

#3 Michael, talk about Sam Alajiki who was the only Cal player to finish in double figures with 13 but Cal didn’t get much help on offense the whole night.

#4 Devon Askew who had missed who had missed a good number of games for Cal didn’t play against the Cardinal how big was his absence for the Cal offense last Saturday?

#5 The Bears take on the Colorado Buffaloes tonight in Colorado the Buffaloes (12-13) have been having problems of their own they have lost seven of their last nine games they have the home floor and Cal has lost five straight what your take in this game?

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Cal in rematch with Stanford Saturday at Maples Pavilion

While the Cal Bears are relieved to have guard Devin Askew (55) back in the line up on Sun Jan 22, 2023 seen here against the Oregon State Beavers they took a 20 points loss. Askew had been out of the line up since Dec 29, 2022 missing five games (photo by KLC fotos)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 Porous defense, non-existent shooting, and inattention to detail the Cal Bears (3-17) were guilty across the board on Sunday afternoon in a 20 point 68-48 loss at Cal to the Oregon State Beavers (8-12). Also how important was it to get guard Devin Askew back in the line up.

#2 Coach Mark Fox admitted his team missed the directive regarding an early shot at the end of the first half. That allowed Oregon State to cap a 13-0 run ending the first half with Jordan Pope’s jumper as time expired. And the defense as a whole?

#3 In the second half, the Bears had more turnovers (11) than made baskets (6). In an unsightly first 20 minutes, the Bears started 3 of 17 and finished 4 of 23 after a scoreless stretch across their final, six possessions.

#4 Add it all up, and Cal may have squandered its best remaining opportunity for a win this season. The visiting Beavers ended a six-game losing streak–and an 18-game road skid.

#5 The Bears will head back to the drawing board again as they tip off against the Stanford Cardinal (7-12) this Saturday. The last time these two clubs met the Bears had won three of their last four games when defeated Stanford 92-70 in Berkeley on Jan 6th.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel Dullum: Cardinal dropping to No.4 is not that big of deal after being No.2

Stanford guard Talana Lepolo, right, drives toward the basket as Southern California guard Kayla Williams defends during the first half at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Sun Jan 15, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Cardinal podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel in the loss to the USC Trojans (13-4) 55-46 last Sunday in the Southland it was the Stanford Cardinal (17-2) first loss after wining 12 straight games their last loss coming in overtime to South Carolina back on Nov 20th at Maples Pavilion.

#2 The loss drops Stanford who had been in the No.2 seeded spot for weeks to No.4 the consequence of that loss was that USC was an unranked school coming into that game.

#3 Daniel, defense on behalf of the Trojans in the first quarter of last Sunday’s game made all the difference and the Trojans had a game plan on double teaming and shutting down the Cardinal’s Cameron Brink who did lead Stanford in scoring with 11 points. The Cardinal would only get 4 points in the first quarter.

#4 Daniel, was the loss to USC just taking the Trojans for granted after the Cardinal had that huge win to UCLA on the Friday before or the Trojans just had a game plan and executed.

#5 You can best bet that the Cardinal will review what went wrong against USC regroup and be prepared for their next opponent at Maples Pavilion tonight the No.8 ranked Utah Utes (15-1). The Utes last Friday were supposed to host the ASU Sun Devils but that game was forfeited due to medical issues with the Sun Devils and they couldn’t travel. The Utes in their next game took on Arizona Wildcats and defeated them 80-79 last Sunday. Daniel how do you see this match up for tonight between the Utes and Cardinal?
