Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: City of Berkeley celebrates big as Bears beat big team

Cal Bears and Colorado Buffaloes final score from Sat Feb 13, 2021 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley (photo by CUBuffsMBB.com)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris talk about Justice Sueing and Connor Vanover who left Cal and could have been seniors on this year’s team. If they both were still here what would this Cal team be like.

#2 It’s was college basketball’s version of Joy in Mudville on Saturday night as the Cal Bears (8-15) got in the win column for the first time in eight games snapping a seven game losing streak.

#3 The challenge wasn’t going to be easy either as the Bears faced a tough competitor the Colorado Buffaloes (16-6) and had struggled with some injuries and loses and the odds didn’t look that great before Saturday’s tip off.

#4 The Cal Bears Matt Bradley led Cal in scoring with 29 points and this was a game when you looked at past games during the losing streak and Bradley wasn’t in the line up you could see the difference.

#5 How much of a surprise was it that second place scorer Jalen Celestine who scored 13 points in the winning effort we haven’t heard much of Celestine this year but he really came through against Colorado.

#6 Was this game a matter of a bad team catching a good team?

#7 Cal heads to Washington State this Saturday and the road has been rough for Cal how do you see this match up as the Cougars have been playing some great games this season as this game is Pullman?

NCAA basketball podcast with Michelle Richardson: Indiana University says mascot, logo and name have to go; Ex-Rugters player arrested for murder; plus more

On the NCAA basketball podcast with Michelle:

#1 Michelle, Indiana University Valparaiso said it’s changing the name from Crusaders to something else. The University is made up of Lutherans and the student president Kaitlyn Stienhiser said the Crusader name doesn’t represent the core values of the university and that logos, the nickname, the mascot will all have to go.

#2 Former Rutgers Scarlet Knights basketball player Logan Kelly 26 was arrested for murder. Kelly is accused of slashing a Tijuana night club employee’s throat. Kelly had walked up behind the employee and killed the woman. He was detained by club employees and arrested. The woman was 19 years old. Kelly played for Rutgers during the 2012-2013 season.

#3 NAIA school Bluefield College in Virginia had it’s game forfeited by the university’s president David Olive because the players were taking a knee during the national anthem. Olive who is white ordered the players to stop taking a knee before the anthem and suspended all players involved in the kneeling saying they were disrespecting the flag, the country and the military veterans.  Olive said he supported their message but didn’t want them taking a knee before games. There could be some political blow back for Olive here.

Cal breaks losing streak with 71-62 win, and hands Colorado a damaging blow to its NCAA aspirations

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA — A month ago, Colorado handed Cal its worst loss. On Saturday night, the Bears returned the favor.

Matt Bradley scored a career-best 29 points to lead Cal past Colorado, 71-62, snapping their seven-game losing streak in the process. Makale Foreman converted a pair of free throws with 16:58 remaining and the Bears never trailed again, a stunning reversal after the Bears lost by 29 points at Boulder on January 14.

“We played as well as we have all year,” coach Mark Fox said.

Buffs coach Tad Boyle tried to impress upon his club beforehand the sneaky challenge Cal presents in that they’ve piled up the losses while becoming increasingly competitive which they were in losing to Utah 76-75 on Thursday.

Apparently, Boyle’s club didn’t get the message.

“Cal is a team that’s playing better,” Boyle said. “They’re a helluva lot better than their record, I can tell you that. With that being said, this is a game we should have won, but we weren’t good enough tonight.”

“We did a lot of standing around,” said McKinley Wright IV. “The coaches had the perfect scouting report and we just didn’t execute.”

Colorado allowed the Bears to impose their plodding tempo, a task that became a lot easier with Cal getting off to a rare, fast start. The Bears led 10-4, 14-13 and after a long drought, recovered to lead 36-33 at the break. It was freshman Jalen Celestine, making his second start in place of Ryan Betley, that came up big for Cal in that regard.

Celestine scored nine of the Bears’ first 22 points–on three 3-pointers–to energize Cal while also taking the challenge of guarding Wright, a candidate for Pac-12 Player of the Year. While Celestine sizzled, Wright was held in check, finishing with 13 points (on 3 of 11 shooting) and two assists.

Bradley seamlessly followed Celestine’s lead with 15 before the break, and 14 after including a critical 3-pointer with 40 seconds that increased Cal’s lead to 65-60. The junior guard was 9 for 17 from the floor and 9 of 10 from the line in surpassing the 20-point mark for the fifth time in his last six games.

Colorado (16-5, 10-5) blew past Stanford on Thursday for their ninth win in 11 games, a run that has them in good standing with the NCAA Tournament selection committee. But should the Buffs falter in games against USC, UCLA or Oregon in their final stretch, earlier losses to Washington (167 in the Pomeroy ratings) and Cal (134) will receive greater scrutiny as bad losses.

“It gives us our fifth (Pac-12) loss and we’re back in the pack,” Boyle said. “Thought we had a chance to compete for a championship. We’ve just got to figure out how win our next one.”

Beating one of the conference’s best teams after nearly a month of losing typified the season for Cal (8-15, 3-13). Not particularly talented by Pac-12 standards, nor tall or deep, the Bears have confounded by staying engaged, when other teams might have splintered. Fox deserves credit for that along with his staff that hasn’t hesitated to shake things up. Celestine’s emergence is one of those moves. After not playing in seven games, and never seeing more than 18 minutes of action in any one game, the freshman played 33 minutes against Colorado.

“We felt like in the game today we could use him defensively against McKinley Wright because he has athleticism and size and he’s got great balance and so defensively I thought he was really good,” Fox explained.

The Bears travel to Washington next with their Pullman stop to face Washington State on Thursday. The battle not to finish last in conference play comes Saturday in Seattle against UW.

With Spencer Jones leading the charge, Stanford bounced back from Thursday’s loss and defeated Utah 73-66 Saturday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

Jones sank a career-high five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. He made two of his 3s in the final 5:02 as the Cardinal (13-8 overall, 9-6 Pac-12) held off a late Utes charge.

Jones was 6 of 11 overall from the field, 5 of 9 behind the arc.

Oscar da Silva scored 13 points on 6 of 9 shooting for the Cardinal, and Michael O’Connell and Jaiden Delaire added 11 points each for Stanford, as the Cardinal finished the game hitting 54 percent of its field goals.

Utah (9-8, 6-7) cut the Cardinal lead to five in the final minute after trailing by double digits most of the second half.

Alfonso Plummer scored eight of his 14 points in the opening minutes of the first half, sparking the Utes to a 12-2 lead. But Stanford outscored the Utes 30-8 over the rest of the first half, using runs of seven and 11 straight points.

The Cardinal held a 34-22 halftime lead.

Timmy Allen led the Utes with 18 points, and Branden Carlson added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Allen scored 14 of his points in the second half.

Stanford travels to Washington on Thursday, and to Washington State next Saturday.

San Jose State vs. Nevada series postponed

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose State men’s basketball team was looking forward to returning home to San Jose, Calif., to host its first “real” homestand for the first time in a while. But not so fast, my friends.

The Spartans had to break the bad news on Friday afternoon. Due to COVID-19 concerns within the Nevada men’s basketball team, the two-game series between the Spartans and Wolf Pack originally scheduled for February 13 and 15 has been postponed.

The Mountain West conference will announce further updates and schedule adjustments at a later date.

The Spartans came off a bye week, only to receive another week off out of precaution. SJSU will continue to practice and make the most out of their free time, and then turn their attention to the UNLV Rebels for a two-game series scheduled to be played on February 19 and 21 at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.

Cal Bears Matt Bradley drives toward the basket against the Utah Utes on Thu Feb 11, 2021 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley (utahutes.com photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael:

#2 After only scoring 24 points in the first half of the game the Bears roared back with 41 second half points only to fall a point short. On the Utes side of the ball after losing to Cal at home in their last meeting the Utes were determined not to lose again to the Bears.

#3 The Bears Matt Bradley led Cal in scoring and kept busy on the floor as he was basically the go to guy in the second half finishing up with 20 points.

#4 In any close game everyone’s offensive effort counts and Grant Anticevich  with 18 points finishing second in scoring. Anticevich has had some good games offensively for Cal this season.

#5 Cal hosts the Colorado Buffaloes this Sat Feb 13th at Haas Pavilion. The Buffaloes defeated Stanford on Thursday 69-51 and have won five out of their last six games. Will the Bears have their hands full on Saturday?

San Diego State sweeps San Jose State with 77-55 win at home

The San Jose State men’s basketball team looked to erase the memory of their three-game win streak coming to a screening halt in Wednesday night’s game against the San Diego State at Viejas Arena.

Unfortunately, the Spartans’ wish wasn’t granted. SJSU lost 77-55 for their second straight loss, and fell to 5-13, 3-11 Mountain West. Trey Smith led all scorers with 22 points. Smith had his second 20-point game of the season.

Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau shuffled his starting lineup before Wednesday’s matchup. Caleb Simmons, Jalen Dalcourt, Omari Moore, Trey Smith, and Ralph Agee took the court. SJSU won the tip, and the game got underway.

The Aztecs opened the scoring with a three-pointer by Jordan Schakel at 18:41 of the first half. The Spartans responded with a jumper in the paint by Ralph Agee and a jumper by Terrell Gomez in a span of 13 seconds, taking a 5-2 lead at 17:39.

Both teams exchanged leads and ties throughout the first half. The Spartans closed out the first half with a bang. Trey Smith hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds left. With the three, Smith recorded a game-best 12 points; and led all scorers with 12 points at halftime. SJSU trailed 33-27 at halftime.

The second half opened up with an Aztecs’ score, but a different player. Nathan Mensah made a second-chance layup for a 35-27 Aztecs lead just 11 seconds into the second half.

Ralph Agee made a pair of free throws, helping the Spartans pull within 10 points, 49-38, at 12:38 of the second half. But the Aztecs heated up, and Lamont Butler hit a three to make it a 20-point game, 58-38, with 9:52 left in the second half. The Aztecs’ fiery offense didn’t stop there. The Aztecs went on a 14-3 run that ended when Trey Smith hit a three with 6:59 left in the second half. Smith scored on a pair of free throws to help the Spartans pull within 23 points, 76-53, with 1:11 left in the second half.

Nate Lacewell wrapped up the Spartans’ scoring with a pair of free throws with eight seconds left in the second half. SJSU lost 77-55.

SDSU improved to 15-4, 9-3 Mountain West. Jordan Schakel led all scorers with 24 points. Schakel now has 200 career threes.

The Spartans host the Nevada Wolf Pack for a two-game series starting on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm PT.

San Jose State’s three-game win streak comes to a halt in 85-54 blowout loss at San Diego State

After a bye week, San Jose State men’s basketball traveled to Southern California to face conference foe San Diego State in a two-game series starting Monday night. The Spartans carried a three-game winning streak into this nationally televised matchup, but they had a tall order in the Aztecs.

Despite shooting the ball pretty well in the first half, SJSU ultimately lost by a final score of 85-54 at Viejas Arena. SJSU fell to 5-12, 3-10 Mountain West. Jalen Dalcourt scored 13 points in the Spartans’ loss.

The Spartans’ lineup for game one vs. the Aztecs remained the same, as Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Jalen Dalcourt, Caleb Simmons, and Ralph Agee took the court.

The Spartans won the tip, and the game was underway. SJSU got two early baskets for an early 4-3 lead at 18:32 of the first half. Both teams exchanged leads and ties for several minutes, but the Aztecs’ offense came alive as they built a 10-point lead, 34-24, with 5:08 left in the first half. SDSU maintained a double-digit lead for the final minutes of the first half. Jalen Dalcourt missed a last-second, three-point attempt, and the Spartans trailed 47-29 at the halftime break.

The Aztecs opened the second half with Trey Pulliam’s jumper in the paint, extending their lead to 20 points, 49-29, just 30 seconds in. Turnovers affected the Spartans, who fell even further behind. SDSU continued to pour in the points, extending their lead to 31 points, 71-40, on Jordan Schakel’s three-pointer off of a Spartans turnover at 10:11 of the second half. The Aztecs won by 31 points, 85-54, for their fifth straight win by 27 points or more.

SDSU improved to 13-4, 7-3 Mountain West. Jordan Schakel led the Aztecs with 23 points.

The Spartans and Aztecs meet again Wednesday night at 8:00 pm PT in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network.
