Beavers complete rare NoCal road sweep with 73-62 win over Cardinal

Oregon State completed a rare road sweep on Saturday, as the Beavers upended Stanford 73-62 in men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

The Beavers swept both California and Stanford on the road for the first time since the 2008-09 season. The Cardinal had not lost to OSU and Oregon at home in the same season since 1985-86.

Jarod Lucas netted a career-high 26 points to pace the Beavers (13-11 overall, 9-9 Pac-12). Ethan Thompson had 13 points for OSU, and Warith Alatishe contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Oregon State has won three of its last four games, while Stanford suffered its third straight setback.

Ziaire Williams led the Cardinal (14-11, 10-9) with 14 points off the bench. Lukas Kisunas tied his career best with 12 points, followed by Spencer Jones with 10 points.

Oscar da Silva, Stanford’s leading scorer and rebounder, missed his second straight game due to what the Cardinal has termed “a lower extremity injury.”

Stanford led 34-33 at halftime, and had a 10-point lead until OSU cut its deficit with a 14-5 run in the closing minutes of the half. The Beavers took the lead for good with 14 minutes remaining in the second half, and led 65-54 on a Lucas 3-pointer with 3:11 left.

Oregon State outrebounded the Cardinal 31-29. The Beavers were 16 of 21 at the free throw line, while Stanford was 5 of 7. OSU had a 34-20 edge in points in the paint, and scored 20 points off of the Cardinal’s 16 turnovers.

There were six ties and eight lead changes.

Stanford wraps up its regular season on Wednesday, when the Cardinal visits No. 19 Southern California. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.

#1 Cal (8-18) who suffered another loss their tenth out of their last 11 games this time in close fashion to the visiting Oregon State Beavers (12-11) on Thursday night 59-57.

#2 Michael did you think it would get worse after they lost in Seattle to a struggling Washington Huskies (5-19) team on their last road trip last Saturday?

#3 Cal had a good first half taking the lead at intermission 33-28 they were getting some good defense and the Beavers just couldn’t covert enough to keep up going into the locker room five points down.

#4 In the second half the Beavers outscored Cal by seven and it was Cal who couldn’t keep the defense up and to make matters worse a tough loss on the home floor.

#5 Cal hosts it’s last game of the regular season against the Oregon Ducks (15-5) on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion the Ducks have won seven of their last eight games. The Ducks in their last game against Stanford (14-10) won on Thursday night 71-68 how do you see this last home game for Cal against Oregon on Saturday night.

San Jose State’s three remaining regular season games cancelled

Just one day after the San Jose State men’s basketball team announced their makeup game against Nevada at the Provident Credit Union Event Center on March 3, news broke that their three remaining regular season games have been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. Their team activities have also been cancelled.

The Spartans were scheduled to play Wyoming on February 25 and 27, respectively. The Spartans were rescheduled to play Nevada on March 3. All three games have been cancelled.

SJSU hopes to continue their basketball-related activities before the Mountain West men’s basketball tournament, which will be played at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas from March 10 to 13.

#1 The flight from the state of Washington for the Cal Bears (8-17) was only two hours but it had to feel like eight as Cal got served up another cold dish of rough basketball in their loss to their standings neighbors the Washington Huskies (5-17) in Saturday night’s 62-51 loss at Alaskan Airlines Arena in Seattle.

#2 The loss pretty much assures that Cal will finish in last place in the Pac 12 for this season. The Bears will need a miracle as they have two more games left at home.

#3 The Bears suffered their worse shooting performance of the year 27 percent and lost the game by 31 points. The Huskies turned up the defense and Cal just couldn’t hit their shots.

#4 Quade Green led the Huskies in scoring with 17 points and Jamal Bey followed up with 15 points on an offense that gave Cal fits all night.

#5 The Bears return home on Thursday night to close out their regular season facing Oregon State (8-17). Saturday Feb 27 will be their last game of the season at Haas Pavilion against the Oregon Ducks (14-4) third in the Pac 12.

#1 No.8 Kentucky made it no contest with a 70-55 win over the No.19 Tennessee Vols. Four Kentucky players in double figures Isaiah Jackson led with 16 points and Davion Mintz followed up with 15 in the not even close contest.

#2 San Diego (3-8) didn’t have a chance they got landslided by Gonzaga (22-0) 106-69. The Zags Drew Timme led with 21 points and Jalen Suggs with 17.  Gonzaga remains undefeated.

#3 Michigan (16-1) and Ohio State (18-5), 92-87 Wolverines win it, Michigan high scorers Hunter Dickinson 22 and Eli Brooks 17 and Chaundee Brown had 15.

Mendoza and Washington leads scoring attack, but San Jose State loses heartbreaker to UNLV 67-64

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose State men’s basketball team had hoped to snap their three-game losing skid with a win over the UNLV Rebels — especially in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network on Sunday. However, SJSU lost a heartbreaker, 67-64, to UNLV at the Provident Credit Union Event Center. SJSU (5-15, 3-13 MW) has now lost four straight games. Sebastian Mendoza led the Spartans with 14 points.

The Spartans’ starting five featured Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Sebastian Mendoza, Richard Washington, and Michael Ofoegbu Jr. The Spartans won the tip, and the game vs. UNLV was underway.

The Rebels got on the board first, as Devin Tillis and Caleb Grill each made layups for an early 4-0 lead at 18:21. However, SJSU responded to tie the game 4-4, thanks to two layups by Mendoza and Moore. Both teams exchanged leads and ties during the first half, but it was the Rebels who hung on for a mere 28-27 lead at halftime. The Spartans had the last score of the first half, as Ofoebu made a late layup with 16 seconds left.

The second half resembled the first half. Both teams exchanged leads and ties, the game went down to the wire, and the Spartans came up short in the end.

The Rebels opened the second half with a free throw by Bryce Hamilton just nine seconds in. At 13:09, Jalen Dalcourt hit a fastbreak 3-pointer cut the deficit to 44-39. Richard Washington hit his first 3-pointer of the game to cap off a 10-0 Spartans run with 8:30 left. Trey Smith added a 3-pointer of his own to tie the game 54-54 and make it a 13-0 Spartans run. The Rebels bounced back to take a 61-55 lead with 5:20 left, but Washington hit a 3 to bring the Spartans within three points, 61-58, just 22 seconds later. Washington and Sebastian Mendoza were in double figures and led the Spartans’ scoring attack with 10 and 12 points, respectively.

Omari Moore made it a one-point game, 61-60, with a jumper in the paint with 2:14 left. Moore made a second-chance layup to bring the Spartans within two points, 66-64, with 42 seconds left. UNLV called a timeout and David Jenkins Jr. made a second-chance free throw to secure a 67-64 win. UNLV (10-11, 7-7 MW) now has a two-game winning streak. Bryce Hamilton led the Rebels with 17 points.

The Spartans wrap up the regular season with a two-game series against the Wyoming Cowboys starting on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 6 pm PT.

Cougars outlast Cardinal 85-76 in 3 OTs

It took three overtimes, but Washington State finally outlasted Stanford 85-76 Saturday afternoon in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash.

The win snapped Washington State’s nine game losing streak to the Cardinal.

Michael O’Connell set a Stanford record by playing 52 minutes; he also scored 17 points, and picked up six rebounds and seven assists.

Jaiden Delaire scored 15 points for the Cardinal, followed by Daejon Davis and Spencer Jones with 10 points each. Oscar da Silva – the Pac-12’s second-leading scorer (19.1 ppg) – was held to 11 points before he fouled out in the second overtime.

Noah Williams topped the Cougars’ scoring column with 40 points. Williams was 12 of 35 from the field – including 8 of 18 on 3-pointers – and 8 of 10 at the foul line. His 40 points were the most for a Cougar since Klay Thompson made 43 in 2011.

WSU (14-10 overall, 7-10 Pac-12) used a 9-0 run to close out the third overtime. In that spurt, Efe Abogidi scored five points, Aljaz Kunc had a basket, and Williams capped the run with a floater in the paint.

Williams hit a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to send the contest into overtime. The Cardinal had the ball with 25 seconds left in the first overtime, but committed a shot-clock violation.

The teams were tied at 63-63 at the end of regulation, 68-68 after the first overtime, and 76-76 at the end of the second OT.

Stanford (14-9 overall, 10-7 Pac-12) outshot the Cougars 52 percent to 36 percent from the field, but WSU outrebounded Stanford 48-36, made six more 3s, and was 18 of 23 on free throws while the Cardinal was 9 of 18 at the line.

The Cougars also had 24 second-chance points to three for Stanford, and WSU outscored the Cardinal in the paint 40-20. There were 10 lead changes.

The Cardinal return to Maples Pavilion to host Oregon on Thursday.

San Jose State falls to UNLV 76-60 for third straight loss

SAN JOSE, Calif. — For the first time in a year, there was a Spartans game day in San Jose. SJSU welcomed UNLV for a two-game series starting Friday night at the Provident Credit Union Event Center. Both the Spartans and Rebels looked to snap a two-game losing skid. Unfortunately, SJSU was handed its third straight loss, 76-60.

Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau switched up his starting lineup, which featured Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Sebastian Mendoza, Richard Washington, and Ralph Agee. Washington returned to the lineup following a head injury sustained one month ago.

The Spartans got the party started in the first half. Sebastian Mendoza hit a 3-pointer for a 3-0 lead at 19:23. SJSU had a 19-16 lead until 11:05. UNLV used a 11-0 run to take a 27-19 lead with 8:05 left. Ralph Agee ended the Rebels’ run with a free throw, cutting the deficit to 27-20 with 6:03 left.

Despite UNLV’s efforts to take a double-digit lead, SJSU kept the game close. The Rebels saw their 29-20 lead disappear, thanks to Trey Smith’s 3 with 4:31 left. Ralph Agee’s back-to-back layups helped the Spartans to a 32-31 lead with 1:35 left. UNLV regained its lead, 35-32, on David Jenkins Jr’s jumper and Moses Wood’s second-chance layup, respectively. The Spartans trailed 35-32 at halftime.

The Rebels opened the second half scoring as Devin Tillis made a layup at 19:33. UNLV went on a 9-4 run to lead 47-36 at 16:15. However, a Spartan scoring surge — led by Richard Washington’s 3 — allowed them to keep the game close, 47-43, at 14:12.

The Spartans trailed 65-53 with 7:09 left. But there was a silver lining as three starters — Trey Smith, Ralph Agee, and Richard Washington — were in double figures with 15, 14, and 13 points, respectively. Washington left the game to sit on the bench late in the game. Nate Lacewell entered the game for Washington.

The Spartans had the last scoring play as Sebastian Mendoza made a fastbreak free throw to cut the lead to 76-60 with 1:33 left. UNLV dribbled out the shot clock, and handed SJSU a 76-60 loss. SJSU fell to 5-14, 3-12 MW, while UNLV improved to 9-11, 6-7 MW.

The Spartans and Rebels meet again on Sunday, February 21 at 1 pm PT.

Cardinal romp to lopsided 79-61 win over the Huskies

A balanced attack, led by Oscar da Silva, Jaiden Delaire and Daejon Davis helped Stanford defeat Washington 79-61 in a Pac-12 men’s basketball contest played at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.

It was the Cardinal’s fourth win in five games, and Washington’s sixth loss in its last seven games.

Da Silva led the Cardinal with 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and an assist. Delaire had 15 points, and Davis finished with 12 points and three assists. Point guard Michael O’Connell added seven points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Ziaire Williams added nine points and Spencer Jones and Lukas Kisunas scored six points apiece for Stanford (14-8 overall, 10-6 Pac-12).

Cole Bajema was the Huskies’ top scorer with 13 points, and Erik Stevenson was next with 11 points and four rebounds. Quade Green, Washington’s top scorer, was held to five points.

Each team finished with 25 rebounds. Washington (4-17 overall, 3-13 Pac-12) was held to 32 percent shooting from the field in the first half, 41 percent for the game. The Cardinal scored 50 points in the paint, and 22 points off of UW’s 20 turnovers.

Stanford shot 57 percent on field goals, including 68 percent in the second half. The Cardinal started the second half by making 12 of 14 shots and built a lead of 26 in the second half.

The Huskies made their only free throw, while Stanford was 14 of 20 at the foul line.

The Cardinal continue their road trip at Washington State at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

#1 Jerry the Cardinal (19-2) women are on a eight game win streak and are coming off a win at Oregon University against the Ducks (12-5) 63-61 a close game that keeps the Cardinal win streak going.

#2  The Cardinal got some great offense on Monday night against Oregon from Kiana Williams 20 points, Cameron Brink 16 points and Lexie Hull with 13 points.

#3 Stanford men: The Cardinal men (13-8) have won five of their last seven games and their last game picked up a 73-66 win over the Utah Utes (9-8) at Maples Pavilion Saturday night.

#4 Four scorers for Stanford finished in double figures Saturday with Spencer Jones leading the way with 17 points and Oscar da Silva with 13 points. Jones doesn’t finish first often but da Silva has to be proud.

#5 Stanford is in Seattle for a visit with the Washington Huskies (4-16) after losing five straight games the Huskies finally got in the win column against cross state rival the Washington Cougars (12-10) 65-63 on Monday night. The tip for tonight’s game at UW is set for 8:00pm, set this game up for us Jerry.
