#3 Looking at Cal’s last game in Pullman 65-57 against the Washington State Cougars (10-7) on Saturday night the Bears had the lead after the half but couldn’t hold it were the Bears just pressing too much in second half?

On the Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Daniel:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (10-4) are on a roll they have now won six out of their last seven games picking up the sixth win against the Washington State Cougars (9-7) in Pullman 62-57.

#2 The Stanford one two punch at work again with the Spencer Jones at the top of the leaderboard with 16 points followed by Jaiden Delaire with 14 points.

#3 Stanford is cruising with four straight wins and even with the previously not playing a game since Dec 23 and getting their first game back on Jan 11th they look as if they haven’t missed a step.

#4 Stanford top rebounder James Keefe with six grabs was key in getting the ball back to his teammates.

#5 The Cardinal head to Seattle for Sat Dec 15th theatre against the Washington Huskies for a 3:00 pm PST tip. The Huskies have been playing .500 ball in their last six games winning three out of their last six games including a win against the Cal Bears on Wednesday night 64-55. Cardinal use big second-half run to upend WSU 62-57; Weird beginning Covid testing delay before tip off

Spencer Jones, Brandon Angel and Jaiden Delaire combined for 46 points on Thursday, helping Stanford win its fourth straight game in a 62-57 Pac-12 men’s basketball decision over Washington State in Pullman, Wash.

Jones and Angel scored 16 points apiece for Stanford (10-4 overall, 3-1 Pac-12), and Delaire was next with 14 points. James Keefe grabbed six rebounds, Jones had five, as the Cardinal and Cougars each had 34 total boards. Michael O’Connell had four assists, while Angel and Isa Silva each had three steals.

Freshman Mouhammad Gueye led the Cougars (9-7, 2-3) with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Flowers was next for WSU with 12 points, followed by Tyrell Roberts with 10. Roberts and Noah Williams each had four assists.

Team defense played a key role in the Cardinal’s win, as Stanford held the Cougars scoreless for over 12 minutes in the second half, and 15 minutes without a field goal. It wound up being a 23-0 Cardinal run, their biggest of the season.

Stanford took its first lead of the game at 44-42 during that run.

The game got off to a late start when both teams awaited COVID test results. WSU left the court early during warmups, while the Cardinal continued their shootaround for another 35 minutes before leaving the court.

Stanford’s next game in what became a busy week is Saturday against Washington at Seattle. Washington State, meanwhile, will host California.

On the Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 The Washington Huskies (7-7) Terrell Brown was well defended by the Cal Bears (9-8) on Wednesday night in the first half of the game and came back scoring 18 of his 21 points in the second half.

#2 Brown led the Huskies in just impressive offense he worked the inside to get shots, worked the boards and wasn’t afraid to take the outside shot.

#3 For the Bears It seemed like anyone that head coach Mark Fox put out on the floor was getting extinguished everyone finished in a single digit except Jordan Shepherd who scored 12 points.

#4 The Huskies led Cal by seven at the half and got the win by 66-54. In both halves of the game the Huskies and Brown just out hustled Cal every step of the way.

#5 Cal will be at it again when they try to get back in the win column against the Washington State Cougars (9-6) at Pullman which could be a very tough place for the Bears to try and snap a three game losing streak.

Cardinal end long layoff with 75-69 triumph over No. 5 USC

It took 15 years, but Stanford finally defeated a Top 5 men’s basketball opponent and did so after a nearly three-week break for COVID-19 protocols.

The Cardinal overtook Southern California 75-69 Tuesday at Maples Pavilion behind the 21-point efforts by Harrison Ingram and Spencer Jones.

Prior to Tuesday, Stanford (9-4 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) lost 14 straight games to AP Top 5 opponents, I with its last such win coming on Jan. 28, 2007, against No. 3 UCLA.

It was the Cardinal’s first game since Dec. 23, when they defeated Liberty in the semifinals of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. Stanford entered COVID protocol before having to cancel its championship game against Vanderbilt. The Cardinal then postponed games with California and UCLA.

Isaiah Mobley paced the Trojans (13-1, 3-7), with Boogie Ellis scoring 14 points. The loss by USC, along with the defeat of No. 1-Baylor, left no undefeated teams in Division I college basketball.
Stanford used back-to-back 3-pointers by Noah Taitz midway through the second half to surge ahead 50-49.

The Cardinal surged ahead to stay at 70-66 when James Keefe made a layup to start an 8-2 run that was completed with a pair of free throws by Ingram with 1:18 remaining.

The Trojans went cold in the final five minutes, missing three free throws and making 1 of 7 field goal attempts.

The effects of inactivity were noticeable early, when Stanford had a stretch of missing 8 of 9 shots. The Cardinal trailed by seven with 6 minutes remaining in first half before surging back to take a 33-32 lead.

Attendance was limited to family members only due to a recent spike in coronavirus cases.

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris:

#1 It wasn’t much of a contest as the Cal Bears (9-7) went down to defeat for the second time to a LA university this time to the UCLA Bruins (10-1) 60-53 a eight point win as the Bruins controlled the offense from wire to wire.

#2 Once again Cal guard Andre Kelly did most of the heavy lifting coming away with 22 points. Kelly executed inside the paint and had a multiple dunk show with one displaying some hang time but regardless Cal came up short.

#3 Morris, knowing what the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins would bring in this week to Haas Pavilion it really wasn’t a surprise for Cal head coach Mark Fox but from what you saw did the Bears leave that best effort out on the floor this week.

#4 The Bruins had two players in double figures with heavy NBA potential guard Tyger Campbell with a team leading 17 points and coming right behind him guard Jaime Jaquez Jr with 14 points to contribute to the Bruins tenth win of the season.

#5 It’s off to Seattle and the Washington Huskies (6-7) in Cal’s next contest. The Huskies have won four of their last eight games and got a six point win over the Utah Utes (8-7) 74-68 on Thu Jan 6 in Utah. Morris after getting a double dose of loses this week the Bears are certainly looking to get back in the win column in their visit to Washington on Wed Jan 12th.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Michael you had a chance to see the Cal Bears (9-5) pick up their fifth straight win at Haas Pavilion on Sunday night defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils (5-8) in rather handed fashion 74-50 the Bears had all their shots falling for them in this one.

#2 The Bears dominated even with their inside game and got tremendous help from Jordan Shepherd (16 pts), Andre Kelly (13 points) and Grant Anticevich (10 pits) the three top scorers.

#3 You talked about Cal head coach Mark Fox challenging the defense in keeping the Sun Devils under 50 points and game’s end the defense did just do that hold the Sun Devils only to 50 points in the 24 point win.

#4 The suddenly ascendant Bears put together their best 40 minutes of basketball this season, and throttled ASU, 74-50, bringing an end to the Sun Devils’ seven-game win streak in the series between the schools.

#5 Michael, the tune kind of changes as the USC Trojans (13-0) come calling on Thu Jan 6th at Haas Pavilion. The Trojans won their last game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-6) 67-53 at the Galen Center in the Southland on Dec 18th. The Trojans have not played a game since Dec 18th and have gone 19 days without playing a game. Will they come out rusty or rested against Cal tonight?

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris it wasn’t even a contest last night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley as the Cal Bears (9-5) leveled the ASU Sun Devils (5-8) 74-50 Sunday night. Nothing but offense for the Bears as the Sun Devils couldn’t do anything to get into this contest in the 24 point landslide.

#2 Morris talk a little about the handy work of forward Lars Thiemann 12 minutes, four rebounds and seven points.

#3 The Bears Jordan Shepherd led in scoring with 16 points followed by Andre Kelly 13 points, and Grant Anticevich with ten points. The Bears distributed the ball well and had a great inside game where head coach Mark Fox was happy with the work done inside the paint.

#4 Taking a look at that first half it just simply wasn’t even a contest as Cal just dominated the Sun Devils 41-23. The Bears had their way on both sides of the ball stopping ASU on any chance to come close and defending the shot. On offense the ball was distributed well and Cal had no problem getting their shots to fall.

#5 Up next for the Bears the USC Trojans (13-0) on Thu Jan 6th. The Trojans who have not lost a game all season just had their way in their last game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-6) in both halves of their game in a 67-53 win. The Bears got a big offensive win Sunday night against ASU but USC could be a whole different matter at Haas on Thursday night.

Stanford postpones game with Cal due to COVID protocol

Stanford University Athletics announced Thursday that the Cardinal’s men’s basketball game against California, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 2, has been postponed due to “health and safety protocols within the Stanford program.”

No other details are available.

In a statement, the Pac-12 Conference said it will work with Stanford and Cal to reschedule the game for a later date.

Stanford has not played since the semifinals of the Diamond Head Classic tournament in Honolulu on Dec. 23, where the Cardinal’s championship game against Vanderbilt was cancelled two days later due to COVID-19 protocol. Since then, team activities were put on hold.

Stanford Athletics said all tickets purchased for the game at Maples Pavilion vs. Cal originally scheduled for Jan. 2 will be honored for the rescheduled date, once finalized. Ticket purchasers should contact the Stanford Athletics ticked office via email at athleticstickets@stanford.edu.

The Cardinal are 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-12. Their next games are scheduled at home for Jan. 6 against No. 5 UCLA and Jan. 8 against No. 7 USC.

The Golden Bears are 8-5 overall, and 1-1 in league play. Cal will still be playing a Pac-12 game on Sunday, when they host Arizona State at 4 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
