The Golden State Warriors (41-34), winners of their last four road games, returned home to face the Dallas Mavericks (45-30). The Mavs were also on a roll, having won seven straight. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are the Mavs’ scoring leaders. The Warriors came away with another win defeating the Mavericks on Tuesday night at Chase Center 104-100.

Doncic averages 34 points a game, and Irving averages 25 points a game. The Warriors’ game plan was to stop those two superstars and hope the defense could come through in crunch time. Dallas’ coach, who went to St. Joseph’s High School in Alameda and two years at Cal, wanted his team to put the clamps on Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Both teams played wonderful defense. It was like a playoff game Tuesday night. There were several ties and several lead changes. The winner would not be determined until late in the game. The Warriors kept attacking the rim late in the game. The Mavs were called twice for goaltending. The Warriors held on to win 104-100.

The Mavs started strong, sinking three three-pointers to open the game. However, the Warriors, led by Andrew Wiggins’ impressive seven-point contribution in the first quarter, fought back to tie the game at 14. A crucial basket from Chris Paul at the end of the period gave the Warriors a narrow 28-27 lead.

The Mavs led 34-28 when the Warriors went on a 19-2 run to lead 47-34. Dallas came roaring back. The Mavs finished the first half with a 15-2 run to tie the game 49-49. Doncic, with 17, and Kyrie Irving, with 12, punished the Warriors’ defense to force the tie.

The Mavericks started the third quarter with a 10-2 run to lead 59-51. Andrew Wiggins made two threes and two two-point buckets to tie the game 61-61. The Mavs scored the next seven points to lead 68-61. Behind Moses Moody’s two threes and buckets by Curry and Wiggins, the Warriors tied the game at 71-71. The Warriors outscored the Mavs 9-2 to finish the third quarter leading 80-74.

Each team knew a six-point lead was relatively easy to overcome in the fourth quarter. Could the Warrior’s stop Doncic and Irving? Would Thompson and Curry play well in the last 12 minutes? Would the bench players rise to the occasion? The Warriors answered all the questions in the affirmative.

Thompson started the quarter by making a steal and a three-point basket. Brandin Podziemski connected from downtown. Chris Paul and Wiggins each made a basket, and the Warriors led 90-79. Dallas responded with a 13-2 run to tie the game 92-92.

Thomson made a two-point bucket to stall the Dallas offense. Green made the next two baskets to put the Warriors ahead 98-92 with 1:48 left to play. Green made the defensive play of the night when he made a steal and then put the ball through the hoop at the other end to give the Warriors an eight-point lead 100-92.

Kyrie Irving hit a three, closing the gap to five points. Wiggins made it 102-95. The Mavs’ J P Washington connected from downtown to trail by four 102-98 with 25.9 seconds left. The Mavs’ strategy was to score quickly and then foul.

The Mavs blocked Thompson’s layup attempt, and Irving scored at the other end to make the score 102-100. The fans were biting their nail and were hoping the Warriors would find a way to win the game. The Mavs then fouled Thompson in the backcourt.

Thompson, was 92% from the free-throw line) cooly sunk two free throws. There was just 10.3 seconds left to play. Warrior’s head coach, Steve Kerr, made sure that his players knew not to foul anyone attempting to make a three-point shot. The Warriors’ defense met the challenge. Dallas was not able to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded. The Warriors win a thriller 104-100.

Game Notes: The Warriors are now 41-34 with the win. The Warriors have seven games left and have a three-game lead over the Houston Rockets for the tenth spot in the Western Conference. The Rockets lost to Minnesota Wednesday night and are 38-37.

The Mavericks’ record is now 45-30. The Warriors extended their winning streak to five games, snapping the Mavs’ seven-game win streak.

The Warriors had six players in double figures. Andrew Wiggins led the Warriors with 23 points. Thompson and Paul each had 14. Curry had 13. Moses Moody had 12. Moody made four threes. Green added 11.

The Warriors shot 44.6% from the floor. Each team made 15 threes. With the smallest team in the NBA, the Warriors outrebounded the bigger Mavs 57-48.

Doncic led the Mavs with 30 points. Doncic also had a triple-double. Doncic pulled down 12 boards and had 11 assists. Irving finished with 27. P J Washington recorded 20 points, and he made three threes. Daniel Gafford was the only other Maverick in double-figures with ten.

The Warrior bench outscored the Dallas Bench 39-13.

The Warriors are back on the road again. The Warriors play the Houston Rockets Thursday night and then play the Mavericks again Friday night in Dallas.

Warriors Sneak Past Spurs 117-113

The Golden State Warriors Draymond Green (23) looks to find someone to pass the basketball to against San Antonio Spurs defenders Tre Jones (23) and Cedi Osman at Frost Bank Arena in San Antonio on Sun Mar 31, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors (40-34) got a bit of a slow start in their game against the San Antonio Spurs (18-57) Sunday afternoon. It was the third quarter that was the deciding factor in this game. They outscored the Spurs 37-21 in the third and every one those points were needed as they went into the fourth quarter.

The Spurs got to within two points in the final minute of play but Golden State held on for the 117-113 win. Draymond Green played a huge role in this game offensively and defensively.

Game recap: This was a tale of two halves. The Spurs got a solid start in the game leading after the first 12 minutes 34-27. San Antonio went on to barely outscore the Warriors in the second quarter 26-25 leading at the half by eight points 60-57.

Golden State turned the tables in the third quarter playing with some incredible intensity. They hit 14 of 24 shot attempts, made five free throws and only had one turnover. The Warriors outscored the Spurs by a landslide 37-21 turning a halftime eight point deficit to an eight point lead 89-81 going into the fourth quarter.

The Spurs did continue to fight and early in the fourth quarter San Antonio had pulled to within five points 94-89 with 8:49 left in the game. Green was having a terrific game with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and six steals.

After this long road trip, a game like this was exactly the kind of game the Warriors needed. Everyone was on board for this game. With under one minute left in the game the Spurs trailed by two points 113-111. Klay Thompson hit a critical three to give the Warriors a 116-111 lead with 28.6 left in the game.

Victor Wembanyama hit a couple of free throws for a one possession game with 3.2 left on the clock. Draymond Green hit 1 of 2 from the line giving the Warriors a 117-113 lead and that would be the final. The Warriors had completed a 4-1 road trip as they head home to Chase.

The Warriors had a terrific third quarter but the Spurs refused to back down winning the fourth quarter 32-28. Golden State barely squeaked by for the 117-113 win. Curry had the team high with 33 points.

This was an amazing showing from Green who continues to play some terrific offense and defense. He finished this game with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 11 assists and 6 steals. He was a huge force in this game.

Golden State had 15 steals in the game and shot for almost 49% from the field and hit 16 shots from beyond the arc. The Warriors finished with 42 points in the paint. Hopefully the team will see Jonathan Kuminga back on the court sooner rather than later. He could possibly take the court Tuesday night when the team takes on the Mavericks.

The Spurs Wembanyama finished with an amazing 32 points. He is a force to reckon with every time he takes the court. The kid is special and at 7’4″ he improves with every game.

Game recap: Easter Sunday afternoon the Warriors traveled to San Antonio taking on the Spurs. The Warriors had to keep an eye on Wembanyama throughout the game. Wembanyama is always a threat being one of the brightest young stars in the game today. The Warriors took the court without Kuminga still out with bilateral knee tendinitis. This is his third straight missed game. In Sunday’s game, the Warriors got road win number 22.

As this current road trip comes to an end, the Warriors will now head home to Chase Center to take on the Dallas Mavericks. Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 7:00 PM and can be viewed on TNT.

Barnes 13 point 3rd quarter gets Kings 127-116 win over Jazz at Golden 1

Sacramento Kings Domantas Sabonis (left) gets the throw down on the Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler (24) in first half action at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Sun Mar 31, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings defeated the Utah Jazz on Sunday night at Golden One Center 127-116. The Kings were coming off two bad losses to the Dallas Mavericks in search of getting back on track. The Kings and Jazz were set for tip-off at 7 PM PST at Golden One Center on Easter Sunday.

In the first quarter, the Kings gained a quick lead against the Jazz. The Kings outscored the Jazz in the first quarter 27-23. The Jazz offense quickly got everyone involved. The Jazz had seven scorers in the first quarter. On the other hand, the Kings Keegan Murray started hot, scoring 10 points to lead the Kings in the first quarter. The Kings didn’t show a lot of superiority so far in a game played against a largely injured Jazz squad. The Kings would look to take over the game in the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Kings couldn’t create the separation they wanted. The Kings and Jazz scored 29 points in the second quarter, and the Kings remained up by four points. Collin Sexton led the Jazz in the second quarter, adding nine points. Domantas Sabonis got the offense going for himself in the second quarter, scoring nine points. The Kings would go into halftime with a 56-52 lead. It was an underwhelming half from the Kings, who would look to jump out ahead in the third quarter.

In the third quarter, the Kings went on an offensive terror. The Kings put up a mammoth 39 points in the third quarter to expand the lead with Harrison Barnes contributing 13 points. The Jazz scored 25 points in the third quarter to dig themselves a big hole going into the final quarter.

The Kings would take a 95-77 lead into the final 12 minutes. Keegan Murray and De’Aaron Fox were leading the Kings in scoring through three quarters with 20 points each. Brice Sensabaugh was leading the Jazz with 19 points.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings did what they needed to maintain the advantage and come away with a win. The Kings didn’t blow the Jazz off the court in the fourth as they did in the third. However, the Kings held on and defeated the Jazz 127-106.

The Kings played well in the second half and took care of a team they were expected to beat going into the game. The Kings outscored the Jazz in the final quarter 32-29. The leading scorer for the Kings in victory was Keegan Murray, who scored 25 points. Fox and Barnes had 24 points each. Sensabaugh and Sexton led the way for the Jazz in defeat, scoring 22 points.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the LA Clippers on Tuesday at 7 PM PST inside Golden One Center.

Hicks solid in first start, and Giants explode late to win 9-1 slugfest over Padres

Saturday, March 30, 2024

Petco Park

San Diego, California

San Francisco Giants 9 (2-1)

San Diego Padres 1 (2-3)

Win: Jordan Hicks (1-0)

Loss: Dylan Cease (0-1)

Time: 3:04

Attendance: 37,104

By Stephen Ruderman

Jordan Hicks pitched five solid innings in his first start as a Giant, as the Giants exploded for six runs in the eighth inning to blow the game open, and the Padres scored five in the bottom of the ninth to turn it into a slugfest, but the Giants held on to win a wild one 9-6.

The Giants won their first game of the season last night behind a strong start by Kyle Harrison, and a big night by Matt Chapman. Tonight, the Giants looked to get over .500 for the first time this season, as they sent Jordan Hicks to the mound for his first start as a Giant.

The Giants signed Hicks, a right-handed flame-throwing reliever, over the off-season to convert him into a starter. Hicks had a 2.65 ERA over five starts in Spring Training, and he accumulated 28 strikeouts over 17 innings pitched. Hicks ended his spring with five no-hit innings against the Oakland A’s at the Oakland Coliseum Monday night.

Opposing Hicks was Dylan Cease, who was traded from the Chicago White Sox to the Padres during the spring.

With rain in the San Diego area, there was a question of whether this game would start on time, or even be played at all, but the rain moved out in the afternoon, thus the game was able to start on time, and both pitchers threw 1-2-3 innings in the first.

Matt Chapman struck out on a foul tip to start the top of the second, but Wilmer Flores walked, and Michael Conforto doubled Flores to third base. Thairo Estrada came up, and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Giants on the board first. Tom Murphy, the Giants’ new backup catcher, who got the start today, lined a double to the wall in left to score Conforto and make it 2-0.

Hicks retired the first two men he faced in the bottom of the second, but he hit Jurickson Profar, and walked Tyler Wade. Hicks then fell behind 3-1 to Jackson Merrill, and was a ball away from loading the bases, but Hicks came back to strike out Merrill to end the inning.

Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the third, and Cease threw a 1-2-3 top of the fourth.

Hicks ran into trouble again in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado singled to start the inning, and put runners at first and second with nobody out. Ha-seong Kim popped out to first on an infield fly, but Profar singled to right to load the bases with one out.

However, just like in the second inning, Hicks was able to settle down and escape trouble in the fourth, as he struck out Tyler Wade, and he got Merrill to line out to short to end the inning unscathed.

Hicks’ escape from trouble in the bottom of the fourth gave the Giants a shot in the arm going into the fifth. Murphy walked with one out, and Nick Ahmed reached on an error by Fernando Tatis Jr. out in right, which put runners at second and third for the Giants with one away. That brought up Jung-hoo Lee, who hit a sac fly to right to score Murphy, and that extended the Giants’ lead to 3-0.

Hicks then came back out, and threw a 1-2-3 shutdown bottom of the fifth. That would do it for Hicks, who gave up just three hits, and struck out six over five shutout innings.

The Padres got a brief reprieve, as Jhony Brito, who came in for Brito after Lee’s sac fly in the top of the fifth, threw a 1-2-3 top of the sixth. The lefty, Taylor Rogers, came in for the Giants in the bottom of the sixth, and surrendered a leadoff single to Cronenworth. Machado struck out swinging for the first out, and Kim popped out to first for the second out. However, Profar pulled a ball past Chapman at third, and down the left field line for a double to score Cronenworth, and put the Padres on the board to make it 3-1.

Brito and Rogers each threw 1-2-3 innings in the seventh, and Tom Cosgrove came in for Brito in the eighth. Ahmed was called out on striked, but Lee pulled a sweeper on the inside corner from Cosgrove, and hit his first big league home run to right to make it 4-1.

“We love watching him hit,” said Conforto. “Everybody is watching when he’s up there. Just his discipline, his eye at the plate, his ability to stay on pitches, stay through the middle of the field, and then obviously we saw a little bit of power, [and he has] a lot of power if he gets the right pitch. He’s been awesome. We’re just going to keep putting him at the top of the lineup, and let him set the tone for us.”

“It’s not about how I get evaluated, but back in the KBO, I had a lot of doubles and triples,” said Lee through his interpreter, Justin Han. “I’m putting the bat to the ball, and that’s what I’m thinking about now.”

The Giants were back up by three at 4-1, but they were not done. Jorge Soler reached on an infield hit to third; Austin Slater pinch-hit for LaMonte Wade Jr. and walked; and Chapman lined a single to left to load the bases. Flores then lined a base-hit to left to keep the line moving, as everyone moved up, and Soler scored to make it 5-1.

With the bases still loaded with one out, Michael Conforo came up, and hit a grand slam to right for his second home run of the year, and that blew the Giants’ lead wide open to 9-1. The Giants ended up scoring six runs in the top of the eighth.

“It was a cool at-bat to have with [the] bases loaded against that guy, he’s a good lefty,” said Conforto. “To battle and fight and kind of change my approach by the end of it, that felt really good.”

Conforto also discussed making a two-strike adjustment, something that has not been seen much in Baseball during the Three True Outcomes Era over the last six-to-eight years.

“[With two strikes], it’s time to fight and see it deep and shorten up the swing a little bit,” Conforto continued. “Kind of knew in the back of my mind at some point he would come back to the sinker and that ninth pitch he came back to it and I put a much better swing on it.”

Enyel De Los Santos came in for Cosgrove following Conforto’s grand slam, and gave up singles to Estrada and Ahmed, but escaped the inning without any further damage. Erik Miller, who threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth in his major league debut in the opener Thursday, came in and pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

The Giants went down 1-2-3 against Stephen Kolek in the top of the ninth, and Miller was back out for the Giants in the bottom of the ninth. Profar walked to start the inning, and Eguy Rosario hit a home run to left to make it 9-3. Jackson Merrill walked, and even though the Giants were up by six runs, the Padres’ offense was very much capable of making a big comeback, and Miller needed to bear down, which he did by striking out Kyle Higashioka.

Bob Melvin opted to bring in his closer, Camilo Doval, who had been warming up in the top of the ninth inning last night for a potential save situation, but after Matt Chapman hit his two-run bomb to give the Giants a five-run lead, Melvin went to Ryan Walker instead. Today, Doval was brought in to get some work, as he had yet to pitch in the Regular Season, but also out of respect for a powerful Padres offense.

Doval has been dominant as the Giants’ closers over the last two seasons, but he got off to rocky starts in each of the last two seasons. This season would be no different, as this game was about to get a lot more interesting. Doval walked Jose Azocar to put runners at first and second with one out; and then Graham Pauley came up, and hit a three-run home run to right to make it 9-6, as this game had suddenly turned into a slugfest

Once again, Doval had a rocky start to a season, but he settled down, as he got Cronenworth to ground out to second, and Manny Machado to ground out to third to end the game. What was a blowout turned into a very interesting game thanks to a five-run bottom of the ninth for the Padres, but the Giants ended up winning it 9-6.

In a big break from the majority of the last two seasons, the Giants’ offense has started out on fire. They are coming through in key RBI situations, and getting the big hits when needed.

The optimism within the Giants’ clubhouse during Spring Training has followed the team into the Regular Season.

“I feel like everything’s coming together at the right time, right at the beginning of the season,” said Conforto.

Through this wild game, Jordan Hicks got the win in the first start of his reliever-to-starter experiment, which has started out quite successfully, and Dylan Cease took the loss for the Padres

With this win, the Giants improve to 2-1, and are over .500 for the first time this season. The Giants can take the opening series with a win tomorrow afternoon. Even though there is more rain in the forecast for San Diego tomorrow morning, it will clear out well in time for the scheduled 1:10 first pitch.

News and Notes:

Daulton Jefferies will be called up to make the start tomorrow. The Giants signed Jefferies to a minor league deal over the off-season, and in five games and one start during Spring Training, he posted a 2.57 ERA over five innings.

Jefferies is not currently a member of the 40-man Roster, so a flurry of roster moves would be expected to be made tomorrow morning.

Camilo Doval once again has had a rocky start to a season. Like last year, Doval struggled with the Pitch Clock, as he had two pitch clock violations in his outing today. Bob Melvin said that he will have a talk with Doval about it.

Jung-hoo Lee expressed his gratitude for his fellow countryman, Ha-seong Kim. Lee said he believed that he would not have received his contract with the Giants if it was not for Kim. Lee also expressed hope that this will help bring more players from South Korea into Major League Baseball.

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Friday night inside Golden One Center in Sacramento. The Kings and Mavs were set to play for the second time this week after the Mavs routed the Kings 132-96 on Tuesday evening. The Mavs and Kings were both coming off two days of rest and ready for a rematch of Tuesday night. The game tipped off at 7 PM PST.

GAME RESULT: In the first quarter, the Kings got off to a quick start offensively. The Kings outscored the Mavs in the first quarter 34-26. Harrison Barnes and Keon Ellis started the game red-hot with 11 points each in the first quarter. The Kings were playing a much more physical style of basketball than they did on Tuesday.

In the second quarter, the Kings kept up the intensity to limit good shots on the Dallas end of the floor. However, Luka and the Mavs kept the game within reach while withstanding the Kings push. The Kings outscored the Mavs by a point in the second quarter, 26-25.

Harrison Barnes continued his hot start, adding six more in the second to finish the half with 17 points. Kyrie Irving led the Mavs in the first half with 14 points. The Kings led going into halftime 60-51.

In the third quarter, the Kings held the edge. The Kings and Mavs traded baskets all quarter to end up in the same place as they started the quarter. The Kings and Mavs both scored 22 points in the quarter for the Kings to maintain the nine point lead. Luka Doncic was leading the way for the Mavs, and De’Aaron and HB both had 17 points to end the third. The Kings would lead 82-73 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Mavs came storming back. The Mavs came back to take a 99-98 lead with 3:45 left to play. The Kings squandered another lead, hoping to regain momentum and not drop both games to the Mavs at home.

The Kings couldn’t regain the lead and lost to the Mavs 107-103. Fox led the Kings in defeat with 23 points. The Mavs outscored the Kings 34-21 in the fourth. Kyrie Irving led the Mavs with 30 points.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Jazz at 6 PM PST.

Warriors Easily Handle Hornets 115-97; Curry scores 23 to lead Golden State

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors (39-34) beat the struggling Charlotte Hornets (18-55) Friday night. The Hornets got close a few times in this game but could not handle the Warriors despite Golden State being without Jonathan Kuminga and Klay Thompson. The final score was 115-97.

Game recap: The Warriors were off to the races from the start of the first quarter leading after the first 12 minutes 26-17. The Hornets pushed back outscoring Golden State in the second quarter 28-24 and at halftime Golden State had a 50-45 lead.

This game was close partially due to the eight turnovers in the first half by the Warriors but the good news for Golden State was that they had held the Hornets to 36% shooting. With the Warriors shooting around 51%, 36 % will not win very many games.

The Warriors really pushed this game out in the third quarter after the Hornets pulled to within six points. After the first seven minutes of the quarter Golden State began to take this game away leading 77-59. After three quarters, the Warriors had this game well in hand, despite the drama that has plagued the team, leading 89-71. The Warriors were 12 minutes away from their 21st win on the road.

The Warriors upped their intensity mid-way through the fourth quarter leading 108-87. The final was 115-97 in favor of Golden State. For the third straight game, the Warriors had held their opponent to under a 100 points. With this season winding down there can be no further missteps this season and they really did a number on Charlotte Friday. Golden State is on a roll right now. They are 13-3 on their last 16 road trips.

Stephen Curry had the high with 23 points and Andrew Wiggins continues to step up scoring 20 points with eight rebounds. Off the bench Moses Moody had 15 points and he was 4 of 5 from beyond the Arc. Draymond Green came back well in this game with eight points and eight rebounds. Trayce Jackson-Davis and Chris Paul also scored double digits. This was a true team win with everybody chipping in.

Post game notes: Friday night the Warriors took on the Hornets for the second time this season. The Warriors won the first game back on February 23 by the score of 97-84. They won this game but Golden State has seen far stranger things especially since the season is winding down.

The Warriors are reeling after Green had his fourth ejection of the season. Green did say that he deserved to be ejected but the question still remains why does this keep happening?

This is a critical time of the season for the Warriors and they can ill afford any more blow-ups from Green while they are fighting to remain relevant in the playoff picture. They are currently fighting to remain in the tenth place.

Despite the ejection, the Warriors stepped up big time against a very tough Orlando Magic winning that game 101-93. Andrew Wiggins was a huge part of the win scoring the team high of 23 points.

The Hornets are struggling this season but had a huge win over the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday night. The Warriors played without Kuminga who continues to miss another game with left knee soreness and Thompson who missed tonight’s game with right knee tendinitis.

The Hornets LaMelo Ball will miss the remainder of the season with ankle tendinopathy. He has not played since January 26th and originally was injured last year on November 26th. He has missed so many games this season and is a large part of the struggles that Charlotte has had.

Easter Sunday afternoon the Golden State Warriors will take on another struggling team in the San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

On the Kings podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 How important is it for the Kings to shut down Luka Doncic tonight against the Dallas Mavericks at Golden 1 Center.

#2 The Mavericks Doncic scored a leading 28 points against the Kings last Tuesday at Golden 1 in the Mavericks 132-96 win.

#3 Doncic with the hot hand also added 11 rebounds and six assists and had three steals. Doncic is a difficult player to defend.

#4 The Mavericks have now won five straight games and are looking for a sixth. The Kings have home floor advantage tonight at Golden 1. What is the top game plan or Kings head coach Mike Brown tonight is it shutting down Doncic and trying to keep the Mavericks guessing on defense?

#5 Do you find it advantageous for the Kings to face the Mavericks in back to back games in having seeing last Tuesday or a disadvantage because the Mavericks have an idea how to run the table against the Kings after seeing them this week?
