The Warriors squeeze by the Lakers

March 16, 2015

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors had their hands full Monday night against the lowly Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers are now 17-49 for the year, but they battled the Dubs tooth and nail all the way, but they lost 108-105. Golden State improves to 53-13 and with the win clinched a playoff berth for the third consecutive year in a row and also improved their record at Oracle Arena to 30-2.

The Warriors had won two out of three against the Lakers this year but the Lakers dealt the Dubs their worst loss of the year in December and came into town wanting to play the role of spoiler and gunning for the upset.

Play was even in the first period as both teams scored 30 points. The Warriors and an 8-point lead early in the second period and then a nine-point lead with just 4 minutes left in the half. The Lakers went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 52, but Dubs finished the half with a four-point lead 58-54. The teams played it even in the third period. Each team scored 24 points as they headed into the fourth period. The Lakers actually outscored the Warriors by one point in the final period, but they made it a very close game. The Warriors pulled away at the end as the Lakers had to foul and Steph Curry made them pay.Final score 108-105 in favor of Golden State.

Now for the stats. The lakers had 6 players in double figures.Jordan Hill(15), Jordan Clarkson(17), Wesley Johnson (16), Wayne Ellington (17). Jeremy Lin(15) and Carlos Boozer(10) were strong off the bench. The Lakers shot 45.9% from the floor and were 8 for 15 in 3-point shots. They had 11 offensive and 34 defensive rebounds. They had 24 assists, 11 steals, 5 blocks and made 18 turnover in a losing effort.

The Warriors, on the other hand, were 47.6% from the floor but made just 7 3-point shots in 27 attempts. They had 7 offensive and 30 defensive rebounds. They had 28 assists, 16 steals, and 7 blocked shot and turned the ball over 14 times.

Klay Thompson led the scoring with 26 points. Harrison Barnes had 11, Draymond Green 16 points, 3 assists and 8 rebounds while Steph Curry scored 19 (17 in the second half0 plus 9 assists and 4 rebounds. No other Warrior was in double figures. The bench played well but did not score a lot. Andre Iguodala had 8, David Lee five and Festus Ezeli and Shaun Livingstone each had six.

Next game will be a doozy as the Warriors, best team in the Western Conference, meet the best team in the Eastern Conference, the Atlanta Hawks at the Oracle Arena Wednesday night, March 18th at 7:30pm. Kings Fight Off Hornets, Hold On For A 113-106 Road Win In Charlotte

By Shawn Whelchel

The Sacramento Kings were able to snap a four game losing streak on Wednesday, as a pair of strong performances from DeMarcus Cousins and Ben McLemore lifted them to a 113-106 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

In what proved to be a close game, the Kings were able to execute on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court late in the fourth quarter in order to sneak away with a rare road win.

Cousins was perfect in the fourth quarter, shooting 4-for-4 to reach 20 points and 14 rebounds on the night, while McLemore added 27 of his own. Rudy Gay added a strong showing as well, dumping in 26 of his own points on the night.

The Kings were aided by the diminished role of Hornets star Kemba Walker, who scored just six points in 16 minutes of play as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Charlotte lost another key piece when center Al Jefferson left in the third quarter.

The loss of Jefferson opened the door for Cousins to go to work late in the game, with both he and Gay scoring 18 combined points on a perfect 6-6 shooting from the field.

With Walker still recovering, the Hornets relied on Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for their scoring output, as he poured in 23 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting on the night. Mo Williams followed Kidd-Gilchrist with 20-points and eight assists.

The Kings will have a day off before taking on the 76ers on Friday.

Hot Shooting Hawks Hand The Kings Their Fourth Straight Loss.

By Shawn Whelchel

The Sacramento Kings were steadily dispatched by the Eastern Conference leading Atlanta Hawks, as they suffered a 130-105 blowout on the road Monday night.

In what amassed to a shootout, the Kings allowed all five Atlanta starters to reach double figures, with the team being led by Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll, both of whom scored 20 points on the night while leading their team to victory over the Kings.

The Kings couldn’t come up with timely stops en route to giving up 130 points on the night, allowing the kings to shoot 60 percent on the field while surpassing their previous season high of 127 points in the process.

Sacramento’s defense was especially poor beyond the arc, where it allowed a league leading 20 three-pointers in the contest. Atlanta also set another NBA season record with 42 assists on the night in route to their scoring outburst.

The Kings were able to break the centennial amount on the night, led by Rudy Gay’s 23 points, but it was too little to match the sharp shooting Hawks, who seemingly couldn’t miss. DeMarcus Cousins notched another double-double under his belt by scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 boards on the night.

The Kings have not gotten out to as hot of a start as expected since new coach George Karl took over, going just 3-7 in that span while sporting a four game losing streak. The Kings will continue their road trip against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday.

The Warriors lose a heartbreaker.

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State warriors suffered a tough loss Monday night in Brooklyn as they lost to the Nets 110-108. The Dubs were playing their fourth game in five days and were finishing a six game road trip. In fact, the Dubs have played ten of their last eleven games away from the Oracle Arena and finish the trip with a win over the Nets.

The Warriors beat Boston in Boston Sunday afternoon and were hoping to get to New York to get a good night’s sleep as they were playing back to back games for the second time on the trip. Unfortunately, they were delayed for five hours due to weather or a mechanical problem and didn’t get to the hotel until 4 am Monday morning. They still, nonetheless, had to face the Nets later and somehow find a way to beat them. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson were not on their game at all in the first half of play. Andrew Bogut and Festus Ezeli played well as did the bench. The Nets were hot. They shot 73% from the floor in the first period and had a ten-point lead 33-23. Brook Lopez, coming off the bench, played extremely well for the Nets. The Warriors played a little better in the second period, but the Nets enjoyed a six-point lead 57-51 at the half. Neither team scored in the last 2 minutes and 30 seconds of play.

Bogut had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks while Steph and Klay had just 5 points between the two of them. Ezeli had 8 points off the bench. The starters were just 2 fo 17 from the floor. Brooklyn shot 56% opposed to Golden State’s 45%. The Warriors had 18 second chance points while holding Brooklyn to just six.

The third period saw the Warriors attempting to mount a comeback, but Brooklyn rebuffed them every time. The Dubs trailed by 3 with 9:41 left, but Brooklyn extended the lead to nine after Steph and Bogut had to leave the game as they were both charged with 4 fouls. The third period ended with Brooklyn leading by six points 86-80.

The Warriors closed the gap to just one, trailing 91-90 with over 9 minutes left to play but Brooklyn went on a 8-0 run to lead by nine. Steph got his game going and the W’s were making a run trying desperately to find a way to win. Curry made two huge 3-point shots to make it a 108-105 game with 3:27 left. Harrison Barnes made a free throw and Steph scored a deuce to tie it at 108 with a minute five left. The W’s defense kept Brooklyn from scoring. They rebounded and block shots and it looked like Golden State was going to get the win but the Dubs turned the ball over and the former Warrior, Jarrett Jack scored the game-winning shot with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock. Final 11-108 Brooklyn.

With the loss, the Warriors fall to 46-12 while Brooklyn improves to 25-33. Steph Curry led the W’s in scoring with 26 points, 18 coming in the fourth period. Bogut had 16, Ezeli 14, Iguodala 12 and Thompson just 7. Brook Lopez had 26 and teammate Deron Williams added 22 for Brooklyn.

After the game, Warriors’ head coach, Steve Kerr, had this to say ‘ I’m proud of our guys, great effort particularly with all the travel.’ "Festus was fantastic, Boges first half was the most aggressive in a long time. Kerr said he told the players to "keep it close, give them plenty of rest during the game and take our shot in the fourth quarter.’ They did just that but sadly, they came up just a few points short

The Warriors return home to play three at home facing the Milwaukee Bucks Wednesday night then the Dallas Mavericks on Friday and then the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday afternoon.

Red-Hot Cleveland torches the Warriors

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors had a tough fight on their hands Thursday night as they tipped off against the red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs had were 17-2 before the start of play and had won 10 straight at home. They also had won 9 straight against Western Conference foes and they made it 10 in a row by defeating the Warriors 110-99.

The Warriors were going to have to find a way to shut down the big frontline of the Cavs if they were to win.

LeBron James, four-time MVP of the NBA, was a force to contend with all night. James was superb as he bullied his way through traffic to score. James ended up with forty-two points, his 55th 40 point or more game in his career. He was helped out by Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, Timofey Mozgov and Tristan Thompson.

The first period was very close as the Warriors and Cavs played a very fast uptempo game that ended with the score at 33-32. The Cavs pulled away late in the second period to have a 61-56 lead at the half. The Cavs’ frontline was plus 6
in points scored and plus 10 in rebounds but the Dubs backcourt was plus 1 in points and plus 3 in assists. There were 8 ties and 12 lead changes in the first half.
Lebron James led the Cavs scoring with 24 points while Steph Curry had 14 and David Lee added 13 coming off the bench.

It was still a close game after the first four minutes of play in the third period.
Cleveland then went on a 16-3 run to put them up by 14 and they kept the pressure on the Warriors as the W’s never were able to make a comeback in either the third or fourth periods.

LeBron James did it all.He scored 42 points, rebounded, made two key steals late in the game and was just a force that was unstoppable. Kyrie Irving added 24 points and Kevin Love pitched in with 16. Timofey Mozgov had 10 and Tristan Thompson had 12 for Cleveland. David Lee led the W’s with 19. Steph Curry had 18, Klay Thompson,13 and Draymond Green ended the night with 16.

The W’s shot just 42.6% from the field opposed to the Cavs 46.8%. One huge difference was at the free throw line. Cleveland was 29 for 35 while the Dubs were just 10 for 19. The nineteen-point differential in made free throws won the game for Cleveland. The Cavs also outrebounded Golden State 51-44 and had a 43-30 advantage on the defensive boards

The Warriors are now 44-11 for the season and the Cavs record improves to 37-22 and they have now won10 straight against Western Conference teams.

The Warriors hang on to defeat the Timberwolves.

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors finished the five-game road trip Wednesday night by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-91. The Warriors have won five of the last six games but they look like a tired team as the motion game has slowed down and the passing is not as crisp as it has been earlier in the season. The Warriors, however, will be getting a chance to rest as they are off until February 20th because of the NBA All-Star break.

The Warriors have not played up to their standards especially in the last three games against the New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers and now the Minnesota Timberwolves, All three teams are having a woeful season and the Warriors should be blowing them out but that did not happen and they were lucky Wednesday night as they blew a 14 point lead with just 7:30 left to play in the game.

The Dubs were led by Steph Curry. Curry had 25 points on 9-for-23 shooting and had 8 assists.
Draymond Green, who was questionable due to an ankle sprain, had 8 rebounds in the win. Andre Iguodala and Leandro Barbosa came off the bench to put some spark in the game and were big factors helping The Dubs to the victory. Iguodala was 4-for-4 from the floor and Barbosa added 10 points but those two sparked the second unit that made up for the sluggishness of the starters. With the win, the Warriors now have a 42-9 record, which is the best record in the NBA as the Atlanta Hawks were beaten by the Boston Celtics.

The Warrior bench outscored Minnesota’s bench 32-14. The T-Wolves were led by Marco Rubio and Nikola Pekovic. Pekovic had 17 points and 13 rebounds but missed a layup with 7.9 seconds left in the game that would have put Minnesota in the lead.

After the game, coach Steve Kerr had this to say " Amazing, amazing recordReally proud of the guys, and I’ve never seen a group of guys that needed the All-Star break more than this team. We’re so out of whack now. We’re tired, We’re not making our cuts. We’re not getting good shots for each other. The ball has stopped moving and we need a rest, and fortunately we’ll get one. "
The Warriors next game will be in Oakland at the Oracle Arena on February 20th against the San Antonio Spurs.

Kings End First Half On A Sour Note, Drop To The Bucks.

By Shawn Whelchel

The All-Star break couldn’t have come sooner for the struggling Sacramento Kings, who ended the first half of the season by dropping 13 of their last 15 games after suffering a 111-103 loss against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.

The 13-game skid sends coach Tyrone Corbin out on a poor note, as the team reportedly agreed to terms with George Karl to become the new head coach of the team when the second half of the season resumes on February 20th against the Boston Celtics.

Milwaukee was led by guard Brandon Knight, who is arguably having an All-Star caliber season despite being left off of the East’s roster. Knight led the Bucks with 20 points, 6 rebounds and five assists on the night. O.J Mayo provided some pop off the bench for Milwaukee by dumping in 21 points in 25 minutes as well.

The Kings received a strong effort from DeMarcus Cousins, who will be making an appearance in New York’s All-Star game, as the big man posted an impressive stat line 28 points and 19 rebounds in the losing effort. Cousins was followed by Rudy Gay, who had 17 points and 8 rebounds on the night.

The Kings will hope that Karl’s veteran coaching presence will be able to revive the struggling team, who currently sit 13th in the Western division, ahead of only the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves with an 18-34 record.

Karl is currently the sixth most winning coach in NBA history. CSN Bay Area reported that the deal is rumored to be anywhere between $4 million and $5 million dollars per year.

Trio Of Bulls Down The Struggling Kings

By Shawn Whelchel

A trio of Bulls led the charge against Sacramento on Tuesday night, as Chicago steadily dispatched the stumbling Kings with a 104-86 trouncing at the United Center.

The Kings seemingly had no answer for Chicago’s Pau Gasol, Derrick Rose and Tony Snell, who combined for 73 of the Bulls’ 104 points on the night. Snell turned in a career night against the Kings, scoring 24 points on 9 of 11 shooting.

Sacramento’s efforts were derailed in the third quarter of Tuesday night’s contest after a 19-4 run in the beginning of the frame sunk any chance for the Kings to mount a comeback. The Kings did themselves no favor on the defensive side of the ball as well, as a lackluster effort allowed Chicago to shoot 52.5 percent from the field on the night, including 7-of-20 from beyond the arc.

The loss was yet another frustrating effort from Sacramento, who have now lost 12 of their last 14 games while earning an 18-33 record in the Pacific division.

But help might soon be on the way for the struggling Kings, as there are reports that George Karl may soon be at the helm of the team. The 63-year old veteran coach, who currently sits sixth in NBA history with 1,131 wins, can give the Kings some much needed guidance in order to turn the troubled club around.

In what may prove to be his final game as head coach, Tyrone Corbin and the Kings will limp into Milwaukee on Wednesday night to take on the Bucks before receiving a much needed break over All-Star weekend.

The Warriors Continue to Win

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors got off to a slow start Tuesday night as the played the Sacramento Kings in Sacramento. The Kings (17-29) started Darren Collison, Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore, Derrick Williams and All-Star Center DeMarcus Cousins hoping to somehow beat the Warriors and prevent the Warriors from sweeping the 4 game season series. The Kings got off to a hot start and behind Ben McLemore’s eleven points took an early 20-10 lead. The Warriors then went on a 19-2 run behind the great play of the second unit. Key players were Andre Iguodala, David Lee. Mo Speights, Leandro Barbosa and Shaun Livingstone and the first period ended with the Warriors holding a seven point 29-22 advantage.

The Warriors behind great defense and great hustle of the second unit extended the lead to 37-22 before Sacramento could right the ship and hope to get back into the game. At this point in the game, the Warrior bench had produced 24 points as compared to just 8 from the Kings’ bench. Again, it was good defense, hot shooting, great passing and strong contributions from the bench. The half ended with Golden State leading 63-42. The Warriors had 22 assists and just 4 turnovers in the first 24 minutes of play..

The Warriors increased the lead to 25 early in the 3rd period. Andrew Bogut had contained DeMarcus Cousins all night but Bogut had to sit down as he committed his fourth foul early in the 3rd period.

Cousins went to work on Mo Speights and the Kings clawed their way back and cut the deficit to just 11 near the end of the period. The Warriors led by 14 as the start of the fourth period and the second unit took control of the game. Speights, Iguodala, Lee and Barbosa continued their strong play and the Warriors won by 22 as the final score was 121-99.

The Warriors’ Steph Curry played 29 minutes and had 23 points and 9 assists. Klay Thompson scored just 14 but the bench was led by Mo Speights who had 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Andre Iguodala pitched in with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist while Leandro Barbosa’s numbers were 12 points,3 rebounds and 5 assists. Andrew Bogut had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots as the Warriors swept the season series from the Kings and have beat them 8 straight times.

After the game coach Steve Kerr said " that was a great win and the guys on the bench came in and just took over."

The Warriors return to Oakland Wednesday night to face the Dallas Mavericks at 7:30PT and then go on a four game road trip before the All-Star break with stops in Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia and Minnesota. Don’t forget to stay warm guys and good luck on the trip. Thw Warriors are now 38-8 for the season.
