San Jose State’s three-game win streak comes to a halt in 85-54 blowout loss at San Diego State

After a bye week, San Jose State men’s basketball traveled to Southern California to face conference foe San Diego State in a two-game series starting Monday night. The Spartans carried a three-game winning streak into this nationally televised matchup, but they had a tall order in the Aztecs.

Despite shooting the ball pretty well in the first half, SJSU ultimately lost by a final score of 85-54 at Viejas Arena. SJSU fell to 5-12, 3-10 Mountain West. Jalen Dalcourt scored 13 points in the Spartans’ loss.

The Spartans’ lineup for game one vs. the Aztecs remained the same, as Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Jalen Dalcourt, Caleb Simmons, and Ralph Agee took the court.

The Spartans won the tip, and the game was underway. SJSU got two early baskets for an early 4-3 lead at 18:32 of the first half. Both teams exchanged leads and ties for several minutes, but the Aztecs’ offense came alive as they built a 10-point lead, 34-24, with 5:08 left in the first half. SDSU maintained a double-digit lead for the final minutes of the first half. Jalen Dalcourt missed a last-second, three-point attempt, and the Spartans trailed 47-29 at the halftime break.

The Aztecs opened the second half with Trey Pulliam’s jumper in the paint, extending their lead to 20 points, 49-29, just 30 seconds in. Turnovers affected the Spartans, who fell even further behind. SDSU continued to pour in the points, extending their lead to 31 points, 71-40, on Jordan Schakel’s three-pointer off of a Spartans turnover at 10:11 of the second half. The Aztecs won by 31 points, 85-54, for their fifth straight win by 27 points or more.

SDSU improved to 13-4, 7-3 Mountain West. Jordan Schakel led the Aztecs with 23 points.

The Spartans and Aztecs meet again Wednesday night at 8:00 pm PT in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network.

San Jose State breaks out the brooms after 75-62 defeat of Air Force

The San Jose State men’s basketball swept its Mountain West series against the Air Force Falcons with a 75-62 win at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center on Saturday. With the win, SJSU improved to 5-11, 3-9 MW, and won its third straight game.

SJSU head coach Jean Prioleau kept the same starting lineup against AF. Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Jalen Dalcourt, Caleb Simmons, and Ralph Agee stepped out on the court. The Spartans won the jump ball, and Simmons scored the first points of the game with a layup in the paint for a 2-0 lead at the 18-minute mark.

The Spartans went on a 10-0 run and took an early 10-0 lead at 14:06. Just 10 seconds later, AJ Walker ended the Spartans’ run with a jumper. The score was now 10-2 Spartans.

The Falcons played harder, but were unable to catch up to the Spartans. Omari Moore and Ralph Agee scored the final points of the first half — a fastbreak layup in the paint and a layup, respectively. The Spartans took a 39-28 lead to the locker room at halftime. SJSU shot 61.5% at halftime.

The Spartans opened the second half on the right foot, but the Falcons kept the game interesting. Ralph Agee made a jumper for a 41-28 Spartans lead just 54 seconds into the second half.

The Falcons used a 7-2 run to pull within eight, 43-35, at 17:30. Ralph Agee ended the Falcons’ run with a second-chance layup. The Spartans now led by ten, 45-35, at 16:43. Agee made another second-chance layup, and the Spartans eclipsed the 50-point plateau, leading 50-42 at 13:19.

Trey Smith made a pair of fastbreak free throws to help the Spartans build a 10-point lead, 70-60, with 31 seconds left in the second half. Smith made another pair of fastbreak free throws to close out the game. The Spartans won 75-62. Ralph Agee led all scorers in points (22) and rebounds (14).

AF fell to 4-12, 2-10 MW. AJ Walker led all scorers with 16 points.

The Spartans visit the San Diego State Aztecs for a two-game series starting Monday, February 8th at 8 pm PT.

San Jose State picks up second straight win in 59-58 defeat of Air Force

The San Jose State men’s basketball team looked to keep their winning ways alive as they welcomed the Air Force Falcons to Phoenix for a two-game set starting on Thursday night. SJSU was the designated home team, and not only that, they defeated AF 59-58 at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center.

The Falcons got things started in a back-and-forth game. Ameka Akaya converted a second-chance dunk for a 2-0 Falcons lead at 19:20. SJSU, however, quickly tied the game 2-2 on a jumper by Ralph Agee and took a 8-4 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Jalen Dalcourt and Trey Smith. The Falcons made it a 1-point game on a 3-pointer by A.J. Walker at 15:29.

Just 25 seconds later, SJSU evened the score 10-10 on a jumper by Jalen Dalcourt, then picked up the pace on both offense and defense. Sebastian Mendoza hit a 3-pointer to pull the Spartans within 3 points at 11:56. Omari Moore threw down a fastbreak dunk off of a Falcons turnover to give the Spartans a 10-point lead with 4:43 left in the first half.

The Falcons wrapped up the first half with a free throw by Keaton Van Soelen with 31 seconds left. The Spartans led 36-30 at the halftime break. For the second straight game, Trey Smith led the Spartans with 11 points at the break. SJSU shot 63% from the floor and were a perfect 9-9 on 2-point field goals.

The Falcons opened the second half with a second-chance layup by Glen Mcclintock. Mcclintock followed up with a free throw off of a Spartans turnover. Jalen Dalcourt responded with a layup, but the Falcons evened the score 38-38 on a fastbreak 3-pointer by Ameka Akaya at 16:57.

The Falcons took a 42-38 lead on back-to-back layups by Akaya and Keaton Van Soelen, but the Spartans regained the lead 51-48, thanks to Ralph Agee’s layup in the paint with 7:09 left in the second half.

The two teams exchanged leads and ties until the final buzzer. The Falcons evened the score 55-56 and took a 58-56 lead, but the Spartans wrapped up the second half scoring. Omari Moore made a fastbreak free throw off of a Falcons turnover, Ralph Agee threw down a second-chance dunk and the Spartans got the stop to seal a 59-58 win over the Falcons.

SJSU improved to 4-11, 2-9 Mountain West. Ralph Agee led all scorers with 15 points.

AF fell to 4-11, 2-9 Mountain West. A.J. Walker led all scorers with 21 points.

The Spartans and Falcons conclude its two-game series on Saturday, January 30 at 3 pm PT.

San Jose State tops New Mexico 83-71 for first conference win

The San Jose State men’s basketball team finally picked up their first conference win of the season with a 83-71 victory over the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday at Burns Arena in St. George, Utah.

With the win, SJSU snapped a five-game losing skid and improved to 3-11, 1-9 Mountain West. Jalen Dalcourt, Sebastian Mendoza, Ralph Agee and Trey Smith all finished with 16 points. Omari Moore finished with 14 points.

Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau made two changes to his starting lineup, inserting Trey Smith and Caleb Simmons into the first five. The remaining starters were Omari Moore, Jalen Dalcourt and Ralph Agee.

Omari Moore opened the scoring with a layup for a 2-0 Spartans lead 48 seconds into the first half. It wasn’t long before the Lobos tied the game 2-2 at 18:46 when Valdir Manuel knocked down a jumper. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of the first half. Sebastian Mendoza started a fast break and finished it with a dunk to tie the game 33-33 with 1:27 left in the first half. Just 14 seconds later, UNM went ahead 35-33 on a 2-pointer from Rod Brown.

The Spartans trailed 35-33 at the halftime break. Trey Smith made four of six 3-point attempts for a career-best 12 points at halftime.

The Spartans reignited themselves for the second half. SJSU surged for their largest lead of the game, 59-54, with 8:36 left in the second half. Caleb Simmons made the layup. Just 28 seconds later, Omari Moore added a fast break dunk to make it 61-54 Spartans.

From there on out, SJSU didn’t let UNM affect their game. The Spartans extended their lead to 71-60 with 3-pointers from Sebastian Mendoza and Jalen Dalcourt in a span of 2:52. Jalen Dalcourt wrapped up the Spartans’ scoring with a pair of free throws, while Valdir Manuel concluded the game’s overall scoring with a jumper.

UNM fell to 5-9, 1-9 Mountain West. Valdir Manuel led all scorers with 25 points.

The Spartans take on the Air Force Falcons at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday, January 28 at 6:30 pm PT.

San Jose State unable to get first conference win after 67-51 loss to New Mexico

The San Jose State men’s basketball team looked to avoid a five-game losing streak with a win over the New Mexico Lobos at Burns Arena, the home of the Dixie State Trailblazers, on Thursday. Neither team had a conference win prior to tipoff, but things changed at the buzzer — just not in favor of the Spartans. The Spartans lost to the Lobos 67-51 in St. George, Utah.

The Spartans’ starting lineup stayed the same. Omari Moore, Richard Washington, Jalen Dalcourt, Nate Lacewell and Ralph Agee took the court to play the sport they love. As of January 20, Washington is ranked the nation’s No. 1 top scoring small forward in the NCAA.

The Lobos opened the scoring in the first half. Kurt Wegscheider made a jumper to make it a 2-0 game at 18:32. Just 27 seconds later, the Spartans tied the game 2-2 when Richard Washington made a layup.
But New Mexico piled on the points and went on a 10-4 for a 9-point lead, 21-19, with 7:04 left.

As if things weren’t bad enough, New Mexico took advantage of seven Spartan turnovers for a 10-point lead, 27-17, with 3:49 left. As a result, Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau called a timeout to give his team time to regroup. While the Spartans showed some glimpses of hope in Sebastian Mendoza’s layup and Caleb Simmons’ free throws, the Lobos kept a 10-point lead, 31-21, at the end of the first half.

The Spartans shot just 8 of 23 from the field in the first half, and to add insult to injury, Richard Washington didn’t return for the second half. Washington took an apparent shot to the face during the first half.

It took Valdir Manuel just 20 seconds into the second half to score against the Spartans. Manuel gave the Lobos a 33-21 lead with a jumper. Jalen Dalcourt responded with a fast-break layup to cut the deficit to 10, 33-23, at 19:14.

At one point, New Mexico didn’t score for three minutes. Ralph Agee made a layup to pull the Spartans within nine, 50-41, with 8:08 left. The Spartans had a chance to correct their mistakes and bounce back, but the Lobo offense was on fire. Makuach Maluach finished with 25 points and six rebounds for the Lobos.

The Spartans wrapped up the second half scoring, but it was too little, too late. Jalen Dalcourt made a fast-break 3-pointer to pull within 16, 67-51, with 1:02 left in regulation. Makuach Maluach made a steal, the Lobos dribbled out the clock, and the Spartans lost 67-51. San Jose State fell to 2-11, 0-9 Mountain West. Ralph Agee led the Spartans with 14 points.

Meanwhile, the Lobos picked up their first conference win of the season. New Mexico improved to 5-8, 1-8 Mountain West.

The Spartans and Lobos face off again on Saturday, January 23 at 12 pm PT.

San Jose State loses 88-61, gets swept by Colorado State

The San Jose State men’s basketball team wrapped up its two-game tilt on a sour note as they lost to Colorado State Rams 88-61 at the Ability 360 Sport and Fitness Center in Phoenix on Saturday.

Richard Washington checked into Saturday’s game as the nation’s fourth-leading scorer with 22.8 PPG. On another note, albeit far less important, SJSU felt like home as their staffers decorated some of the stands with San Jose State Spartans and Provident Credit Union banners.

The first half featured a lot of creative plays on the both ends of the court. CSU struck first for an early 2-0 lead as James Moors made a second-chance layup in the paint, but SJSU responded right out of the gate with a 3-pointer from Jalen Dalcourt.

The Spartan offense woke up midway through the first half. Ralph Agee made a layup to help the Spartans pull within four at 12:17. Sebastian Mendoza hit two nothing-but-net 3-pointers to put up a team-best eight points.

The Rams rained on SJSU’s parade by igniting scoring surges. Isaiah Stevens made a 3-pointer off of a Spartans turnover and CSU took a 42-26 lead with 48 seconds left in the first half. Richard Washington wrapped up the Spartans’ scoring with a layup in the paint. Both Washington and Sebastian Mendoza scored eight first-half points. The Spartans went into the locker room, trailing 42-28.

Just 11 seconds into the second half, Richard Washington drew first blood with a jumper to make it a 12-point game, 42-30. Washington came out to play with 13 points and the Spartans chipped away at the Rams’ lead 51-40 at 16:14.

The Rams had other plans. CSU hit five of their last seven to extend their lead to 63-44 at 12:03. Sebastian Mendoza wrapped up the scoring with a pair of second-chance free throws off of a Rams turnover and a layup. The Spartans lost 88-61.

SJSU fell to 2-10, 0-8 MW. Richard Washington led all scorers with 15 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds.

CSU improved to 10-2, 7-1 MW. Isaiah Stevens and Adam Thistlewood scored 16 points apiece.

The Spartans travel to St. George, Utah to face the New Mexico Lobos in a two-game set starting Thursday, January 21 at 12 pm PT.

Richard Washington shines, but San Jose State loses to Colorado State 90-57

The San Jose State men’s basketball team hosted the Colorado State Rams at the Ability 360 Sport and Fitness Center in Phoenix on Thursday night. Spartans senior guard Richard Washington shined, but SJSU lost to CSU 90-57 in the first game of a two-game tilt.

The Spartans had their game faces on, but the Rams struck first and went on a quick 5-0 run. Adam Thistlewood hit a fast break 3-pointer for a 3-0 Rams lead 50 seconds into the first half. Kendle Moore made a fast break layup at 18:19. The Spartans ended the Rams’ run at 17:22 with a 3-pointer from Jalen Dalcourt off of a Rams turnover.

The Rams proceeded to pour it on for safe measure. Kendle Moore hit a second-chance 3-pointer, James Moors made a paint layup, and Isaiah Stevens made two jumpers to make it 16-7 Rams at 11:47. After a Spartans drought of 2:04, Hugo Clarkin made a paint layup to pull within 20-9. CSU, however, took a 29-9 lead after a P.J. Byrd 3-pointer with 8:27 left.

If things weren’t bad enough, James Moors made a paint layup to make it 31-11 Rams with 6:37 left. Despite a late 6-0 run, SJSU trailed 46-26 at halftime. Richard Washington had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting at halftime. Washington also recorded his 10th game of the season in double figures and 23rd game of his career.

Richard Washington continued his strong play in the second half. Washington hit back-to-back 3-pointers, but the Rams still led by 16 points at 15:09. Washington added a 3-pointer to pull the Spartans within 63-44 at 11:35.

The Rams used a 12-0 run to build a 31-point lead, 82-51, with 5:05 left. Ralph Agee ended the Rams’ run with a paint layup with 4:50 left. The Rams went on another quick run, 5-0, to take a 87-53 lead with 3:52 left. Trey Smith made a paint layup off of a Rams turnover, Jalen Dalcourt made a jumper off of a Rams turnover and John Tonje dribbled out the clock. The Spartans lost 90-57.

SJSU fell to 2-9, 0-7 MW. Richard Washington led all scorers with 35 points.

CSU improved to 9-2, 6-1 MW. Kendle Moore led all scorers with 18 points.

The Spartans and Rams meet again on Saturday, January 16 at 3 pm PT.

San Jose State lose 80-65 to get swept at Fresno State

The San Jose State Spartans concluded its back-to-back series against the Fresno State Bulldogs on Sunday at the Save Mart Center. The Spartans not only lost 80-65, but were also swept by the Bulldogs in a two-game rivalry series.

SJSU head coach Jean Prioleau put together a new starting lineup of Jalen Dalcourt, Omari Moore, Richard Washington, Nate Lacewell, and Ralph Agee. Dalcourt became a first-time starter for the Spartans.

Ralph Agee found his way inside the paint and made a layup to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead. Nate Lacewell knocked down a jumper to make it 4-0 Spartans at 18:12 of the first half.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 6 and went ahead 9-6 in a span of 37 seconds. Deon Stroud found his way inside the paint and made a game-tying layup. Stroud followed up with a go-ahead 3-pointer.

Richard Washington knocked down a jumper to pull within one, but the Bulldogs persisted, scoring seven points for a 16-10 lead with 9:36 left in the half. Devin Gage hit a 3-pointer and Jordan Campbell made two layups in the paint.

Deon Stroud hit back-to-back 3-pointers to help the Bulldogs to a 13-point lead, 31-10, with 4:28 left in the half. The Bulldogs used a 13-2 lead to take a 38-20 lead with 2:09 left in the half. Nate Lacewell made a pair of free throws, and the Spartans entered halftime, trailing 41-25.

Although Jalen Dalcourt opened the scoring with an early 3-pointer, both the Bulldog offense and defense dominated the Spartans and never looked back. Orlando Robinson hit a 3-pointer to help the Bulldogs to a 20-point lead, 50-30, at 17:20 of the half.

The Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the half. While Nate Lacewell made a free throw with nine seconds remaining, it was too little, too late for the Spartans, who lost to the Bulldogs 80-65.

SJSU fell to 2-8, 0-6 Mountain West. Richard Washington led all scorers with 24 points.

FSU improved to 5-3, 3-3 Mountain West. Deon Stroud led all scorers with 22 points.

The Spartans continue their conference slate against the Colorado State Rams on Thursday, January 14 at 6:30 pm PT.

San Jose State falls to rival Fresno State 79-64

The San Jose State Spartans looked to win their second straight game as they began conference play with back-to-back games against the rival Fresno State Bulldogs.

Both teams played really hard, but the Spartans ended up losing to the Bulldogs 79-64 at the Save Mart Center on Friday night. SJSU is now 1-15 at the Save Mart Center.

The Spartans had a new opponent, but head coach Jean Prioleau kept the same starting five. Omari Moore, Richard Washington, Trey Smith, Nate Lacewell and Ralph Agee walked onto the court with their game faces on.

The Spartans drew first blood 21 seconds into the first half, thanks to Richard Washington’s jumper. Washington scored 7 points in the first four minutes of the game.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 2 and took a 7-2 lead, but the Spartans scored 9 points to tie the game at 11 at 15:56 of the first. Richard Washington made a jumper to make it 19-14 Spartans at 12:41 of the first. Washington’s back-to-back free throws and Sebastian Mendoza’s jumper gave the Spartans an 8-point lead, 24-16, at 10:40 of the first.

The Spartans’ lead didn’t last long. The Bulldog defense stepped up late, Deon Stroud made a game-tying jumper to tie the game at 31 with 5:50 left in the first and Orlando Robinson hit a 3-pointer to give Fresno State a 34-31 lead 55 seconds later.

The Bulldogs had a 38-34 lead at the final timeout with three minutes remaining in the first. San Jose State, however, went ahead for good after Richard Washington hit a 3-point jumper with one second left in the first. The Spartans led by three, 45-42, heading into the locker room at halftime.

Richard Washington struck first with a jumper for a 47-42 Spartans lead 31 seconds into the second half. Ralph Agee made it 49-42 Spartans at 18:40 of the second. SJSU proceeded to shoot 55% from the field and 50% from downtown and took a 5-point lead, 53-48, at 15:31 of the second.

Four turnovers in a span of 1:51 hurt the Spartans. The Bulldogs tied the game at 57 on a Junior Ballard 3-point jumper with 9:43 left in the second. Orlando Robinson caught a pass from Anthony Holland to make a layup and give the Bulldogs a 2-point lead, 59-57, with 8:47 left in the second.

Ralph Agee made a game-tying layup, but Fresno State used a 10-0 run to take a 10-point lead, 69-59, with 4:07 left in the second. The Bulldog defense shut down the Spartan offense, holding them to only 19 points in the second. The Bulldogs won 79-64.

FSU improved to 4-3, 2-3 Mountain West. Orlando Robinson led all scorers with 23 points. Four Bulldogs players finished in double figures.

SJSU fell to 2-7, 0-5 Mountain West. Richard Washington led all scorers with 30 points.

The Spartans and Bulldogs meet again on Sunday, January 10 at 4 pm PT.

San Jose State defeats Benedictine Mesa 80-64 for second win of the season

The San Jose State Spartans stayed in Phoenix to face the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center on Monday night.

SJSU recently added Benedictine Mesa to their non-conference schedule over the weekend. This turned out to be a good idea as the Spartans beat the Redhawks 80-64 to pick up their second win of the season and snap their 6-game losing skid.

Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau stuck with the same starting lineup, keeping Omari Moore, Richard Washington, Trey Smith, Nate Lacewell and Ralph Agee. The Spartans won the tip and the game between the two bottom-feeders was underway.

The Redhawks opened the scoring in the first half. Tyler Fernstrom hit a 3-pointer just 17 seconds into the half. The Spartans used a 12-0 run, capped by Ralph Agee’s 8 points and 5 rebounds, to take a 14-5 lead at 13:25. Jalen Grijalva ended the Spartans’ run with a 3-pointer at 13:01.

Jalen Dalcourt continued to impress the masses as he went 4-for-4 on 3-pointers with 3:33 left in the half. Dalcourt previously posted 23 points in his Spartan debut on Sunday. The Spartans were all smiles at the break when they took a 47-28 lead into halftime over the Redhawks.

The Redhawks scored first to open the second half. Nick Sessions made a jumper to cut the Spartans’ lead to 47-30 just 13 seconds into the half.

Ralph Agee broke out in a big way and recorded a career-high 18 points as the Spartans led 70-54 with 6:04 left in the half. The Spartans were a little scared of the Redhawks, who pulled within 10 points when Nick Sessions hit a 3-pointer with 4:02 left in the half, but they weren’t intimidated. The Spartans took care of business and won by a final score of 80-64 in Phoenix.

SJSU improved to 2-6, 0-4 MW. Ralph Agee led all scorers with 18 points.

BM fell to 0-4, 0-0 CAL PAC.
