#1 The Philadelphia Flyers Nolan Patrick who suffered migraine disorder says he’s ready to return and has waited 21 months to get back. Patrick says he’s feeling better and wants to get back in the line up against the Pittsburgh Penguins for this Wednesday’s opener.

#2 It was reported that the Minnesota Wild’s Marco Rossi will be out indefinitely due to an upper body injury. Wild head coach Dean Evason said the 19 year old Rossi will not be available. Rossi signed a three year contract with the Wild on Oct 23, Rossi scored 100 points (39 goals and 81 assists) he did it in an impressive amount of time in just 56 games.

#3 At the San Jose Sharks training camp: John Leonard who played for the University of Massachusetts at forward. Leonard was drafted sixth in the NHL entry draft and is expected to make his NHL debut against the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday night. At Amherst Leonard in Division I Leonard led the division with 27 goals, 10 assists. That all ended when Coronavirus shut down the league back in March.

#4 Former Chicago Blackhawks goalie 36 year old Corey Crawford has announced his retirement from hockey and the New Jersey Devils this weekend. Crawford had not practiced with New Jersey since Jan 1st and in a statement said that he’s given everything he could to the game but it was time to retire.

#5 The New York Islanders have signed Matthew Barzal for a three year contract. The agreement was made on Saturday. In 68 games last season Barzal led the Islanders with 60 points, 19 goals and 41 assists. Barzal has led the Islanders in scoring in each of the last three seasons with the team and has played in the NHL All Star game in the last two seasons.

#1 The Philadelphia Flyers got a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night with goals from Ivan Provorov, Michael Raffi, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, and Sean Courtuier. Flyers goalie Carter Hart saved 28 out of 29 shots.

#2 The Ottawa Senators got a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders, the second period was key for Ottawa scoring two goals from Mikkel Boedker and Anthony Duclair as each team scored one goal in each of the other frames making the Ottawa second period the difference

#3 The Nashville Predators Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene scored a goal each in their win over the Dallas Stars 2-0. Preds goalie Juuse Saros stopped 30 of 32 Stars shots for the shutout.

#4 The Chicago Blackhawks got three goals in the third period good enough to get by the visiting Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at the United Center on Thursday night. The Hawks Jonathan Toews scored a goal and Alex DeBrincat, scored twice in that the third period.

#5 Minnesota Wild second period goals from Alex Galchunyuk and Zach Parise turned out to the be the difference as the Wild got a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. The Sharks Joe Thornton score in the third period but the Sharks fell short ending their three game win streak.

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Sharks longest win streak since November came to an end with the visiting Minnesota Wild getting a desperately needed 3-2 win. Former Shark Alex Stalock made 40 saves and Alex Galchenyuk scored the game-winner. Former Shark Gary Suter’s nephew Ryan scored for the Wild as well and Zach Parise added the insurance goal.

Stefan Noesen and Joe Thornton had the Sharks tallies and Martin Jones made 24 saves in his third-straight start. Suter scored his eighth of the year 8:34 into the first, but Noesen responded on a San Jose power play with 5:20 left in the frame. Noah Gregor and Tim Heed had the assists. 

The Wild capitalized on poor defense in the second period, scoring a pair of goals in the period. First Galchenyuk was given room to break towards the net, taking a Parise rebound to the net on the backhand for a 2-1 Wild lead 11:30 into the period. Suter also assisted on the goal for his second point of the night. 
Parise would finish off a cross-crease pass after he was left unmarked when a pair of Sharks defenders went after the Puck carrier Luke Kunin. After taking Kunin’s pass, Parise went five-hole on the backhand to beat Jones for his 25th goal with 5:32 left in the period. 

Joe Thornton scored on a net front scramble 9:08 into the third to make it 3-2 Minnesota. Despite an absolute flurry of shots, 20 by San Jose to just three for Minnesota, the Wild closed out the game. They hopped over a couple teams to now take the first wild card spot in the Western Conference. 

The Sharks next welcome the Senators to the Shark Tank for a Saturday afternoon tilt, then hit the ice Sunday night against another playoff bound squad, the Colorado Avalanche.

#1 The San Jose Sharks picked up their third straight win and got a three goal 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Len tells us what turned the corner for the Sharks.

Sharks Spoilers Again in 5-2 Win Over Leafs

Playoff contenders coming into the Shark Tank have officially been put on notice: the San Jose Sharks will not be doormats for the top teams of the league as the season winds down. The Sharks scored two goals in less than a minute in the third period to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 Tuesday night after embarrassing the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0 Saturday night at home. The Sharks peppered Jack Campbell with 38 shots on goal Tuesday. 


Evander Kane scored twice, Antti Suomela and Stefan Noesen had a goal and an assist and Martin Jones made 25 saves to give the Sharks the victory over a Toronto squad sitting in third place in the Atlantic division five points ahead of the Florida Panthers. Auston Matthews scored his 46th goal of the year, trailing only David Pastrnak (47) of the Bruins for the league lead. The Maple Leafs superstar also added his 33rd assist on a Mitch Mariner goal.


The teams were tied 2-2 entering the third after Toronto twice erased a one-goal deficit, but the Sharks pulled ahead just over five minutes into the final period. Stefan Noesen used the Sap boards to his advantage, tracking down Suomela’s shot that whistled wide left of the Toronto net. It bounced off the end boards on the opposite post where Noesen was waiting to tuck it in for a 3-2 Sharks lead 5:48 into the third.


Evander Kane added his second goal of the game and 24th of the year just 50 seconds later. The winger skated to Leafs net minder Jack Campbell’s left and ripped the puck under his glove for a 4-2 lead. Radim Simek put in the empty netter for the final score. 


Kane opened the scoring in the first, tipping a Brent Burns point shot on the power play 6:38 into the game, but Matthews would answer back 2:48 into the second. Suomela scored his first goal of the year 66 seconds later after Noesen put the Puck on Campbell and Suomela found the rebound on the goal line for the no-angle strike. Marner scored with 2:33 left in the second to tie the game 2-2 on a great individual effort.

The Sharks fan once again play spoiler Thursday in game three of a five game homestand when they face the Minnesota Wild. The Wild currently sit one point back of Winnipeg for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference and look to avenge a 2-0 loss at home to the Sharks earlier in the year.

#1 Samuel Girard nailed a goal at 2:37 to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the home team Carolina Hurricanes. Tyler Jost of the Aves scored twice to help Colorado extend their winning streak to five games.

#2 The Philadelphia Flyers continue to roll with a 5-2 win over visiting New York Rangers at Wells Fargo Center. Claude Giroux scored twice and the Rangers lost Chris Kreider to a fractured ankle.

#3 Alex Stalock stopped 24 shots getting his fourth shutout of 2019-20 season as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0. The Wild dominated from the puck drop.

#4 The Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson saved 28 shots against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a narrow 3-2 win at the Duck Pond in Anaheim. The Pens who come into San Jose tonight are on a five game losing streak.

#5 The Las Vegas Golden Knights picked up a 4-2 win against the Buffalo Sabers on Friday night as the Knights Reilly Smith scored two goals to pace Vegas to victory.

Sharks, Jones, Shut Out Wild 2-0; Sharks win four out of last five

The San Jose Sharks shut out the Minnesota Wild 2-0 Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul. It was Martin Jones’ first shut-out of the season. He made 39 saves in the win, with goals from Dylan Gambrell and Melker Karlson. Alex Stalock made 19 saves on 20 shots in the loss.

After the game, Sharks interim head coach Bob Boughner said:

I think you have to give credit to the players. Facing the injuries that we were facing, and, I think, a little bit of adversity, and Jonesy coming in there and doing the job. I know they wanted to play hard for him. I thought we really defended well. You know, we gave up 39 shots and they threw a lot at us but I thought we played hard and I thought Jonesy made the saves that he had to.

Asked about Dylan Gambrell’s goal, he said: “That whole line, the True line, I think they did their job. I had to put Dylan out there as a right-hand shot on a couple of key face-offs against some really good players and he did a really good job. And they chipped in with a goal 5-on-5 and that always helps, if you’re getting some depth scoring. And a lot of our skill is out and guys like that have to step up.”

The Sharks went into Saturday’s game in Minnesota down two more players as well as Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture. Evander Kane received a three-game suspension for an elbow in Friday’s game against the Jets. Kane’s comments on the NHL’s decision can be found on Twitter. The NHL may have a public response to those comments but they have not made one yet.

Erik Karlsson injured his hand in the same game and the team declared the defenseman out for the rest of the season. The Sharks filled out the roster with Antti Suomela and Tim Heed, who have both played with the Sharks this season. Heed last played on January 16 and Suomela played on February 1.

The Wild out-shot the Sharks in the first period 10-8, though the Sharks had two plus power plays, including a two man advantage for 1:52. They had four shots in those combined power plays. The Sharks also had to kill one penalty, allowing one shot to Minnesota’s top-ranked power play. The Sharks did very well in the face-off circle, winning 74% of them.

The shot disparity continued in the second period, with the count at 14-6 Wild. There was a single penalty in the second, an illegal stick penalty to Kevin Labanc. Labanc lost his stick in a collision along the boards and Timo Meier pushed it back to him with his own stick. The move by Meier made it illegal for Labanc to use that stick. the Wild got credit for one shot on that power play.

The face-off contest went to Minnesota in the second, with the Wild winning 67% of them.

The Sharks scored at 3:08 of the third when Brent Burns’ shot went off of Dylan Gambrell in front of the net. It was Gambrell’s third of the year with Burns and Antti Suomela getting the assists.

The Sharks had one more penalty to kill in the third, and again they allowed just one shot on goal.

The Wild pulled Stalock from the net for the extra skater with 1:36 to go in the third. Melker Karlsson and Patrick Marleau had shots at the empty net but the Wild defense was there to prevent those goals. Karlsson and Barclay Goodrow had another chance, this time as a two-man breakaway. Goodrow gave the puck to Karlsson for the shot and Karlsson took it. Goodrow got the assist.

The third period face-off battle went to the Wild as they won 62% of them. The shot count was also in their favor 15-7. The lion’s share of the Sharks face-offs were taken by Joe Thornton (won 13 of 19) and Barclay Goodrow (won 9 of 22).

The Sharks will next play on Monday in San Jose against the Florida Panthers at 1:00 PM PT.

On the Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 The San Jose Sharks are in a four-game win streak. They have defeated Minnesota, Nashville, Edmonton, and Winnipeg after their dreadful road trip. What has been the difference?

#2 In game with the Predators, it was a 2-1 shootout. It seems like the Sharks are more focused in finding the back end of the net in shootout situations.

#3 One player who has been quite focused in the shootouts is the Sharks’ Timo Meier. Meier scored the game-winning goal in the shootout against the Predators for the 2-1 win and Meier did it in the seventh round.

#4 Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer has really put together a game plan — now with four straight wins and a big win over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, everything is falling into place.

#5 The Sharks host the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers two times this month. Talk about seeing a team twice in the same month. There could very well be advantages to that.
