Sacramento Kings podcast Barbara Mason:Kings hope to snap five game skid Tuesday against Mavericks

Sacramento Kings center Drew Eubanks throws down against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Sun Jan 4, 2026 (AP News photo)

Sacramento Kings podcast with Barbara Mason:

1.Sunday night the Sacramento Kings took on the Milwaukee Bucks at Golden One Center. Both teams are struggling this season but it was the Bucks who were favored in this game with a 16-20 record.

2.It was a game time decision for Giannis Antetokounmpo taking the floor in the game after suffering a calf injury and as it turned out he was indeed able to play in this one.

3.After trailing by as much as 26 points in the second half, the Kings got to within three points in the second half of the fourth quarter only to let the Bucks back in the game and eventually run away with it.

4.The Kings welcomed Zach LaVine back on the court playing off the bench and three Sacramento starters had double digits with Russell Westbrook scoring 21 points the team high. It just wasn’t enough to get past the Bucks.

5.The Kings will take another crack at the Dallas Mavericks Tue Jan 7th. The Kings hoping for the same result they had back on December 27 when they won that game. The Kings would like nothing more than to break this horrific losing streak and beat Dallas a second time.

Kings Rally Comes Up Short Losing to Bucks 115-98

After making an epic comeback, the Sacramento Kings (8-12) came up just short losing to the Milwaukee Bucks (16-20). They had trailed by as much as 26 points getting to within three points in the second half of the fourth quarter only to let the Bucks run away with the game 115-98.

The Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo made life pretty miserable for the Kings finishing with a double double, 37 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Porter Jr. also played a huge role in the win scoring 25 points . The high for the Kings was Russell Westbrook with 21 points and Zach LaVine finished with 20 points on his return..

Game recap: After the first 12 minutes of play the Kings trailed by a couple of points 28-26. The Kings took a slight lead mid-way through the quarter but the Bucks fired back taking a seven-point lead with two minutes left in the first quarter 26-19. With 48 seconds left on the clock the Kings had fought their way back into the quarter tying up the game at 26. Sacramento was still in this game.

The second quarter turned upside down for the Kings getting outscored 34-18 by Milwaukee. After a competitive first quarter, the team just came apart in the second quarter trailing at the half 62-44.

Antetokounmpo who was able to take the court in the game just wore the Kings down. Sacramento had put the stops on the turnovers which was good news but they were shooting at around 57% from the line and could not hit a three only having two in three quarters of play.

Four Bucks were shooting in double digits with Antetokounmpo leading the way with 24 points and nine rebounds. Myles Turner, Porter Jr., and Ryan Rollins all had double digits through three quarters.

The Kings Westbrook, Keegan Murray and DeMar DeRozan all finished the third quarter with double digits but they could not put the stops on the damage that Antetokounmpo was bringing.

After three quarters the Bucks had taken an 85-69 lead. Sacramento was much more competitive in the third quarter outscoring the Bucks 25-23 but they just had a lot of ground to make up going into the fourth quarter.

After trailing by as much as 26 points, the Kings cut the Bucks lead to 85-75 in the final quarter. With 11:10 left in the game the Kings had a very real chance for a come-back in this game. Sacramento continued to cut the Bucks lead to single digits 88-85 with under nine minutes left in the game.

When it was looking so very positive for the Kings the Bucks pushed their lead back out to 95-85 with a lot of time still left in the game. Porter Jr. and Antetokounmpo had come up huge for Milwaukee in the final minutes of the quarter. After the amazing rally by Sacramento the Bucks hung tough finishing off Sacramento 115-98.

The Kings fought hard in the second half of the game fending off a 26-point deficit pulling to within three points but let the Bucks back in the game. It was yet another heart-breaking loss for the team, their sixth loss in a row.

LaVine had a great game off the bench finishing with 20 points. Westbrook had the team high with 21 points.

Antetokounmpo had a solid game finishing with a double double 37 points and 11 rebounds. Porter Jr. was also terrific scoring 25 points with 4 rebounds. The Bucks had outplayed the Kings on both ends of the court.

Game notes: Sunday night the Kings battled but lost to the Bucks at Golden 1 Center. The Kings suffered a fifth straight loss. It would be fair to say that the season is over with only 46 games left in the season but they may be looking at some improvement in those remaining games.

Sunday night the Kings welcomed Zach LaVine back on the court playing off the bench. For a minute the Kings was concerned with yet another possible blow when Maxime Raynaud came out of their matchup Friday night against the Phoenix Suns. He limped off the court with a leg injury mid-way through the fourth quarter. He went immediately to the locker room.

Thankfully an MRI taken after the game proved to be negative and the Kings had avoided yet another setback. The last thing the Kings could afford would be to lose another center who was playing in the absence of Domantas Sabonis. The Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo was probable going into Sunday night’s game suffering a right calf strain and played 32 minutes. Neither team can boast a stellar season but the Bucks had the real edge since Antetokounmpo took the court.

The Kings will remain at home for their next game taking on the Dallas Mavericks Tue Jan 7th. They will be looking for a second win over Dallas having beaten them on December 27. Tipoff for this game is another late one with an 8:00pm PT start.

Kings Come Away With a Win Beating Favored Bucks 135-133; LaVine leads Sac with 31 points

Milwaukee Bucks Kyle Kuzma (18) commits a foul on the Sacramento Kings Zach LaVine (8) in first half action at Fiserv Arena in Milwaukee on Sat Nov 1, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Sacramento Kings (2-4) played a miserable first quarter trailing 47-36 before turning this game completely around outscoring the Milwaukee Bucks (4-2) in the second and third quarters before tucking this game away in a nail-biter in the fourth quarter 135-133.

This was the Bucks first home loss of the season. The Kings had four of their starters finishing with 20+ points with Zach LaVine leading the way with 31 points.

Game recap: Unlike every game played this season so far, the Kings had a horrible start falling behind 15-2 early in the first quarter. The largest lead for the Bucks was 15 as Sacramento struggled throughout the entire opening quarter.

The Bucks were shooting over 70% from the field and they were seven of ten from beyond the arc for 70%. As the first 12 minutes of play came to an end the Kings trailed 47-36. The Kings were shooting almost 54% from the field but were getting stomped from outside. They had only hit a single three while the Bucks finished the quarter eight of 13. Sacramento had a single turnover in the game in the first quarter.

The Kings had a better start in the second quarter pulling to within six points 49-43 early in the quarter. The Bucks turned that around pulling back ahead by double figures and again the Kings continued to get outplayed trailing 59-45 at the eight minute mark.

The Kings made a push with 4:34 left in the quarter trailing by three points 57-60. Sacramento had really turned things around displaying a lot of confidence going on a nice run and cutting a significant deficit.

The Kings had made defensive adjustments and made this a highly competitive game. Had it not been for some sloppy ill-timed turnovers by Sacramento this game could have been even closer with Sacramento taking the lead into the locker room at the half.

Despite that the Kings had really pulled it all together as the score at the half had Sacramento trailing by a single point 71-70. They had outscored the Bucks in the second quarter 34-24 after getting scorched in the first.

The Kings got the third quarter underway taking their first lead of the game after trailing by as much as 15 points. The Bucks long shots had cooled off and the Kings began to hit shots from beyond the arc.

At 9:45 in the quarter this game was tied at 78. At 8:01 the game remained a tie now at 81. At the seven minute mark the Kings took their largest lead of the game 86-83. This game took an unexpected turn when at 4:07 the Kings had a 97-87 lead.

They had gone on a 10-0 run playing at a high offensive level. Doc Rivers took the second timeout of the quarter trying to re-group and put the stops on the surging Kings. Sacramento went on to outscore the Bucks in the third quarter 38-31 leading after three 108-102.

The question now remained, can the Sacramento Kings finish this game? The Kings have seen themselves self-destruct in the final minutes of numerous games this season. After starting this game in terrible fashion they would need to finish the game on a high note, the fourth quarter would be a battle.

Sacramento had led by double figures in much of the third quarter but the Bucks had begun to creep into the fourth trailing by single digits. With 3:54 left in the game, the Kings called a time-out looking to protect their 126-119 lead.

The Kings called another time-out with three minutes left in the game and a slim 128-123 lead. With just over two minutes left on the clock the wheels began to come off for the Kings. They were able to deny the Milwaukee push and were able to finish the game.

The Sacramento Kings held on to win the game 135-133 for their second win this season and it was a great win for the team after so many close games and disappointing fourth quarters.

Domantas Sabonis had a season high 24 points and 13 rebounds, a double double. Zach LaVine had the team high of 31 points and DeMar DeRozan finished with 29 points. Dennis Schroeder had 24 points in a game in which the Bucks shot around 60%.

The Kings had ten turnovers and shot 87% from the line. This was certainly a ray of hope for Sacramento playing three amazing quarters after opening the game on such a sour note. They fought to the end, finished the game and were rewarded with the win despite being the underdogs.

Game notes: The Kings have had a rough start this season. They were in the middle of a challenging road trip taking on the elite teams in the NBA but the win against the Bucks on this trip after losing in Chicago Wednesday was a game where they met the challenge.

They have had hot starts in most of these games, they have led deep into the fourth quarter on occasion but have been unable to finish as their season record indicates. They have a core of seasoned veterans that can get the job done but they have fallen just short in every game they have played with the exception of their one win over the Utah Jazz.

Saturday they took on another of the league’s best, the Bucks at Fiserv Forum and came away with a two point win handing the Bucks their first loss on their home floor. The Bucks are smart, efficient and were highly favored in this game but in the end they couldn’t hold on.

This had been a brutal stretch for the Kings who lost the first two games to start the trip and there are more bumps in the road as this road trip continues but the win against the Bucks was a sweet win for the Kings who never gave up.

Unfortunately for Sacramento Malik Monk will missed Saturday’s game with a personal issue. The Kings leaned on Russell Westbrook, Keon Ellis and Devin Carter in his absence.

Monday night the Kings will finish off this demanding road trip taking on the Denver Nuggets. They will be looking to take the energy and confidence from this win into Ball Arena. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Bucks Surge Late to Hand Kings 114-108 Defeat

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Kings returned to action Saturday night, hosting the Milwaukee Bucks at Golden 1 Center. The Kings entered the matchup amidst a tough homestand, coming off recent victories against the Grizzlies and Cavaliers and a loss to the Bulls on Thursday. Both teams were short-handed, with Damian Lillard unavailable for Milwaukee, and Sacramento missing Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk. Despite a strong start from Sacramento, the Bucks rallied late to secure a 114-108 victory.

The Kings opened the game playing stout defense, limiting the Bucks to just 17 points in the first quarter while scoring 25 points themselves. Sacramento struggled significantly from beyond the arc, shooting 1-10 from three, yet managed a respectable 42% from the field. The Bucks endured a dismal shooting quarter, converting only 29% of their shots and going scoreless from three-point range. Giannis Antetokounmpo led all scorers with nine first-quarter points.

The Kings maintained their intensity into the second quarter, despite a Bucks surge that narrowed the margin to 43-42 with 4:41 remaining. Sacramento responded effectively, finishing the half strong and entering halftime with a 61-49 lead. The Kings outscored Milwaukee 36-32 in the quarter, led by Keon Ellis, who tallied 18 first-half points. For the Bucks, Brook Lopez matched Ellis’s first-half output with 18 points of his own.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the third quarter as Milwaukee surged back into contention. With a little over three minutes left in the quarter, the Bucks tied the game at 80. When the third-quarter dust settled, Milwaukee had outscored Sacramento 37-28, trimming the Kings’ lead to 89-86 heading into the fourth. Antetokounmpo was dominant, scoring 22 points in the quarter alone and shifting the momentum toward Milwaukee.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings faltered, unable to maintain their earlier success. Milwaukee outscored Sacramento 28-19, securing a 114-108 win. The Kings’ offense stagnated late, reverting to isolation basketball, a recurring issue. Sacramento struggled to make critical shots down the stretch, while Antetokounmpo finished with 32 points on 12-20 shooting, guiding the Bucks to victory.

After the game, Doug Christie addressed why Sacramento’s offense often becomes stagnant late. “I think many, many times, the defense blows the play up, and as the shot clock is going down, then you take your time,” Christie explained. “I think we have to explore early in the shot clock, and sometimes we’re not playing as fast as we need to, and then that allows them to press up. All of a sudden, it gets later in the shot clock, and now you become that [stagnant] without even knowing why it happened.” This recurring offensive inconsistency has plagued the Kings in late-game situations.

Keon Ellis echoed Christie’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for more ball movement. “Maybe it’s a thing of trying to get it to them [Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan] too much, too early,” Ellis said. “And I think probably we could move the ball a little bit more before we try to, you know, I would say, just go ISO ball.”

Playoff Picture: With the loss, the Kings fell to 35-35, remaining the ninth seed. They hold a slim 1.5-game advantage over the tenth-place Phoenix Suns and sit just 1.5 games ahead of the 11th-place Dallas Mavericks, dangerously close to dropping out of play-in contention entirely.

Key Performers: DeMar DeRozan led the Kings with 22 points on 8-18 shooting. Keon Ellis contributed 20 points and six assists on efficient 6-10 shooting.

Up Next: The Kings remain at home and will face the Boston Celtics on Monday at Golden 1 Center, with tip-off set for 7 PM PST.

Kings Winning Streak Comes to an End at the Hands of the Milwaukee Bucks Losing 130-115

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers (right) points out instructions as Giannis Antetokounmpo (left) stands by in the first half against the Sacramento Kings at Fiserv Arena in Milwaukee on Tue Jan 14, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Milwaukee Bucks (20-17) controlled the opening quarter leading the Sacramento Kings(20-19) 47-26 after the first 12 minutes of play in tonight’s matchup. The Kings were able to match the Bucks in the second and third quarters but could not get on top of Milwaukee playing from behind all night.

The Kings cut a 28 point deficit to 11 in the fourth quarter but that was as close as they would get. There would be no eighth win in a row for Sacramento. The final was 130-115 in favor of the Bucks.

Game recap: The first quarter was not the start that the Kings were looking for. The first six minutes of the first quarter was a close one but then the Bucks began to make a move extending a slim lead into a monster lead.

After the first 12 minutes of play, the Bucks had established a 47-26 lead. It was a huge lead for Milwaukee as they were leaving the Kings in the dust and Sacramento was being manhandled at every turn offensively and defensively.

The Kings started the second quarter going shot for shot with the Bucks but with 21 points to make up, shot for shot was not the answer. Mid-way through the quarter, not a single King had double digits. They were faced with a huge mountain to climb.

With a little under five minutes left in the first half, DeMar DeRozan was the first King to reach a double digit tally. The Bucks owned the paint shooting around 55% to the Kings 39%. At the half, the Bucks were cruising leading 75-54.

Milwaukee had led by as much as 28 points but the Kings cut it by as much as 12 points trailing 46-62 with 2:41 left in the half. The Bucks pushed their lead back out to 75-54 as the second quarter came to an end. The second quarter was a tie with each team scoring 28 points. Sacramento had matched the Bucks but had made absolutely no ground.

Milwaukee had controlled the paint through the two opening quarters scoring 34 points to the Kings 18. Both teams committed only four turnovers apiece so good ball protection on both sides. The poor second half of the first quarter was a killer for Sacramento.

They were not able to recover at all in the second quarter. They kept pace with Milwaukee but could not get on top of them. By the half the Kings had Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox and DeRozan all with double digits. The Bucks also had three starters with double figures; Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the charge with 19 points. The Sacramento Kings had a lot of work to do in the second half.

The Kings outscored the Bucks in the third quarter but only by a single point 28-27 and going into the fourth quarter, Milwaukee had a 102-82 lead. A win for Sacramento in this game was a long shot at best. An eighth win in a row was not looking very good for the Kings.

The fourth quarter got underway and at 9:42 the Kings trailed by 13 points making a bit of a run 91-104. The Sacramento run continued as the Kings pulled to within 11 points trailing 96-107 with a lot of game left.

That would be as close as Sacramento would get. They couldn’t make the stops, and they couldn’t make the shots when they needed them. The offensive excellence of the Bucks Tuesday night overwhelmed the Kings. Once again the Kings bench was quiet finishing with 17 points while the Milwaukee bench hit 41 points. The final for this game was 130-115 in favor of the Bucks.

Every starter for the Kings shot double figures with DeRozan leading the pack shooting for 28 points and six rebounds. Fox finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, a double double. Sabonis also had a double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Keon Ellis had 18 points and Keegan Murray shot for 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Game notes: Tuesday night the Kings took on the Bucks looking for their eighth win in a row but it was too much Giannis scoring 33 points and the Kings ended their seven game win streak. The Kings were faced with containing Antetokounmpo and Damien Lilliard a monster task.

Sacramento had most of their starting roster ready to roll in this game as they finish up this road trip. Malik Monk unfortunately did not play in Tuesday night’s game. He is dealing with a groin injury and is listed as day-to-day. The Kings will really missed him in this tough matchup. They tried to finish up this final game with a win and get a spotless road trip but it wasn’t to be.

The Kings will now return home to Golden 1 Center for a matchup with the Houston Rockets on Thursday looking to start another win streak. This will be another tough assignment for the team but they are fully capable of coming out on top. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
