Phillies, Harper slip past Giants 6-5

Philadelphia’s Bryce Harper tied Wednesday’s game against San Francisco with a home run, then scored the game-winning run on Andrew Knapp’s ninth-inning single, as the Phillies edged the Giants 6-5 at Citizen’s Bank Park.

In the bottom of the ninth, Harper started the final rally by drawing a walk off Giants reliever Wandy Peralta (2-1). Harper moved to second on a one-out single by Brad Miller and scored the game-winner when Knapp singled to left-center.

Hector Neris (1-1) struck out two in the top of the ninth and picked up the win.

Harper tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to right-center off Camilo Doval. The Giants had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh on Alex Dickerson’s RBI single to center. Earlier in the inning, pinch-hitter Darin Ruf hit a three-run home run to center, measured at 415 feet.

Philadelphia led 4-1 in the sixth after Nick Maton’s run-scoring single to left. Buster Posey scored San Francisco’s first run when Mauricio Dubon hit into a fielder’s choice in the top of the fifth.

Mickey Moniak’s three-run home run to left-center put the Phils up 3-0 in the second inning.

Miller went 4-for-5 to lead the Phillies’ 12-hit attack, while Dickerson was 3-for-4 for San Francisco. Philadelphia starter Zach Eflin worked six innings, giving up one earned run on seven hits, and struck out three without a walk. Anthony DeSclafani, the Giants starter, struck out five and walked two while giving up three runs on five hits in four innings.

The Giants return home on Thursday to start a four-game series against Miami. Probables are Aaron Sanchez (0-1, 2.45) for San Francisco, while the Marlins will start Daniel Castano (0-0, 1.80).

Alex Wood made a great impression in his debut wearing the Orange and Black of the San Francisco Giants.

Wood, who signed a one-year contract worth three million dollars in the off-season, went five innings, allowing three hits and not walking a batter, as the Giants salvaged the finale of the three-game series with a tough 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park.

The left-hander, who resides in the Miami area in the off-season made his debut after being shut down in the middle of spring training with a back issue and looked great in his first start as a member of the Giants.

Alex Dickerson drove in the only run of the game in the top of the third inning that Tommy La Stella from third base. La Stella reached third base with two outs, as Jesus Aguilar was unable to field the ground ball hit by Brandon Belt to first base.

Tyler Rogers was placed in the closers role and pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season, as the Giants picked up the third shutout in the last seven games.

The Giants bullpen, which lost the past two games retired the last 13 batters of the game to get the victory.

Camilio Doval, who was brought to the big club after Johnny Cueto was laced on the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain and threw a perfect seventh inning, including getting Adam Duvall to strikeout to end the inning.

Austin Slater made the play of the day in the bottom of the third inning, as he dove to his left to rob Pablo Lopez of extra bases.

Lopez, who saw his record fall to 0-2 on the season struck out a career-high nine in six innings, as he allowed an unearned run.

NOTES: Closer Jake McGee and Logan Webb were placed on the injured list due to lingering effects from the COVID-19 vaccine.

Buster Posey sat out the game with a bruised left elbow that he sustained in Saturdays game, when he was hit by a pitch against Sandy Alcantara and the x-rays were negative.

Wood was activated prior to the game and Chadwick Tromp was called up from the Alternate Training Site.

UP NEXT: Kevin Gausman will head to the mound on Monday evening at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, as the Giants open a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Alfaro’s walk-off gives the Marlins the win in extra innings 7-6

The once reliable San Francisco Giants does not seem so reliable right about now, as for the second straight game, they were unable to hold to the lead.

Jorge Alfaro hit a two-run double in the bottom of the 10th inning, helping the Miami Marlins to a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Giants at loanDepot Park.

Alfaros double off of losing pitcher Jarlin Garcia got by left fielder Austin Slater, who was able to recover to get the ball to the plate; however, it was too late, as Jazz Chisholm, Jr., and former Giants infielder/outfielder Adam Duvall both cross the plate to give the Marlins their second come-from-behind victory in as many nights.

The Giants took the lead in the top of the 10th inning, as Brandon Belt doubled to right-center field to score Slater with the tie-breaking run and pinch-hitter Anthony DeSclafani, who bunted into a Fielders Choice stopped at third.

Slater, who was on second base when the top of the 10th inning easily scored from third, as he got there when Donovan Solano picked up his second hit in as many at-bats; however, Slater was forced to stop at third base due to the arm of Starling Marte.

Duvall gave the Marlins the lead in the bottom of the first inning, as he tripled to center field that scored Marte.

That would be the score when Jesus Aguilar doubled to score Marte and Corey Dickerson, who went 4-for-6 on the evening against Giants pitching.

The Giants finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning, as they scored five runs to take a 5-3 lead.

Belt got the rally started, as he hit a solo home run to get the Giants on the board. Brandon Crawford drove in the second run, as he singled to score Evan Longoria.

Slater then gave the Giants the final three runs of the inning, as he slammed a three-run home run to centerfield to score both Crawford and Buster Posey.

That would be the score in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Alfaro singled to center to score Chisholm, Jr. and sent pinch runner Magneuris Sierra to second base.

Marte then tied up the game when he singled to score Sierra from second game and send the game into extra innings.

Aguilar made a sensational play at first base to end the top of the 10th inning, as he dug the ball out of the dirt and into his bare hand. Chisholm was able to stab the ball, as he dove to the turf on the ball hit by Mauricio Dubon.

Aaron Sanchez went just 4.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits, walking three and striking out five.

Sandy Alcantara went 6.2 innings for the Marlins, allowing four runs on six hits, not allowing a walk and striking out seven.

NOTES: With the loss, the Giants streak of winning series comes to a halt at three, as they lost their first series since the opening series against the Seattle Mariners.

Both Tyler Beede and John Brebbia threw at the alternate site in Sacramento, as both of them recover from Tommy John surgery.

UP NEXT: Alex Wood makes his Giants debut on Sunday afternoon, as he takes the mound against the Marlins, who will send right-hander Pablo Lopez to the hill.

Marte’s three-run home run wins it for the Marlins 4-1

In what was a pitchers duel between the Miami Marlins and the San Francisco Giants all came to a halt with one swing of the bat.

Starling Marte hit a three-run home run off of Wandy Peralta in the bottom of the eighth inning, helping the Marlins to a 4-1 win over the Giants at LoanDepot Park. It was the fifth win in six games for the Marlins.

Jesus Aguilar came off the bench to get the decisive rally off to a great start, as he walked against eventual losing pitcher Matt Wisler. Corey Dickerson then singled that advanced Magneuris Sierra, who came on to pinch run for Aguilar moved up an additional 90 feet and then Marte launched a Peralta pitch into the left field seats.

Anthony Bass picked up his first win of the season, as he pitched a perfect eighth inning before giving way to closer Yimi Garcia, who picked up his third save of the season.

Evan Longoria gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, as he singled off of Marlins starter Daniel Castano. Mike Yastrzemski, who is trying to get out of a slump, doubled to lead off the inning and then scored the Giants lone run of the evening on the Longoria single.

Anthony DeSclafani pitched six strong innings for the Giants, as he gave up just one run, scattering four hits and continues to be sharp, despite not being involved in the decision in his three starts this season, DeSclafani has allowed just three runs.

DeSclafani made just one mistake, as he gave up a solo home run to Jazz Chisholm, Jr.in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Castano, like DeSclafani did not fare in the decision, as he went five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks in his first appearance of the season.

NOTES: Johnny Cueto was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain that he suffered in Wednesdays start versus the Cincinnati Reds at Oracle Park. To replace Cueto on the active roster, the Giants called up right-handed pitcher Camilo Doval from their minor-league camp.

Both the Giants and the Marlins wore the number 42, honoring Jackie Robinson, who made his major-league debut 74 years ago yesterday for the Brooklyn Dodgers against the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Aaron Sanchez will take the mound for the Giants on Saturday, while the Marlins will send Sandy Alcantara to the mound.

After a successful homestand, the San Francisco Giants take Thursday off before embarking on an eastern road trip to Miami and Philadelphia.

The Giants went 5-1 by sweeping Colorado in three games and taking two of three from Cincinnati. On Wednesday, Johnny Cueto picked up his second win while lowering his ERA to 1.80, and Jake McGee earned his sixth save, as San Francisco pulled into second place in the National League West, trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by two games.

San Francisco is 7-3 in its last 10 games, while the Marlins (5-6) are 5-5 in their last 10 outings, including a three-game sweep of Atlanta, and are in third place in the NL East.

Probable starters for the Giants in the Miami series are Anthony DeSclafani (1-0, 0.82) on Friday, Aaron Sanchez (0-1, 2.70) on Saturday and Alex Wood (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the season on Sunday after being activated off the injured list (lower back stiffness).

Pitching is getting the job done for San Francisco – the Giants have the second-best earned run average in MLB (2.78) and sixth in WHIP (1.07). Donovan Solano leads the Giants with a .353 average, Evan Longoria is hitting .316 with four home runs, Longoria and Brandon Crawford each have eight runs batted in.

Presently, the Giants have two players on the 10-day IL – LaMonte Wade Jr. (strained left oblique) and Reyes Moronta (strained right flexor mass).

Start times (Pacific Daylight Time) for the Miami series are 4:10 p.m. on Friday, 3:10 p.m. on Saturday and 10:10 a.m. on Sunday.

Posey drives in lone run in Giants’ 1-0 win

SAN FRANCISCO — Tyler Beede pitched one of his best games as a major leaguer, and he got the only run he needed from his battery mate.

Beede went 6.1 innings, allowing zero runs on just three hits, walking one and striking out five and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Miami Marlins 1-0 before a crowd of 33,418 at Oracle Park.

With the victory, Giants manager Bruce Bochy picked up career win number 1,997, leaving him three away from becoming just the 11th manager in major-league to reach the 2,000-win plateau. The previous 10 managers are all members of the Hall of Fame.

Buster Posey drove in the only run that Beede would need in the bottom of the sixth inning, as his bouncer leaped over the head of Starlin Castro that scored Stephen Vogt with the only run of the game.

Vogt led off the inning with a double to the right-center field alley, he then went to third on a Kevin Pillar ground out and then scored on the Posey base hit.

Posey also came up huge behind the plate, as he threw out Magneruis Sierra at second base for the first out of the seventh inning.

Sierra was originally called by second base umpire D.J. Reyburn; however, after a short review, the call was reversed, as Mauricio Dubon tagged Sierra prior to him reaching the base.

The Giants had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning, Vogt led off the with a single; however, Pillar and Posey were unable to advance. Brandon Crawford singled him to second, but Beede grounded out to Miguel Rojas to end the inning.

Brandon Belt went 3-for-4 on the night, and his second hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning nearly gave the Giants; however, his double bounced into the stands for a ground rule double and Mike Yastrzemski was forced to return to third base. Yastrzemski singled with one out, but the two were stranded, when Evan Longoria struck out to end the inning.

Sandy Alcantara was the hard luck losing pitcher, as he went seven innings, allowing just one run on nine hits, not walking a batter and striking out six. With the loss, Alcantara falls to 5-13 on the season.

Despite allowing a hit in the top of the ninth inning, that was eventually retired by a double play, Shawn Anderson picked up his second save of his major-league career.

Garrett Cooper was forced to leave the game in the bottom of the first inning with a left knee contusion that occurred when he made a diving catch of a Yastrzemski liner. He is considered day-to-day.

NOTES: Belt extended his on-base streak against the Marlins up to 24 games that dates back to July 19, 2014. His streak against the Marlins is the second longest in the majors versus the Marlins, as only former teammate Joe Paniks streak is at 25 games.

The Giants are now 5-8 in September, and are 10-29 in the month since September 1, 2018 that included an 11-game losing streak during the 2018 season.

Abiatal Avelino hit a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning, as the Giants Triple-A team, the Sacramento Rivercats defeated the Round Rock Express 7-5 at Dell Field in Round Rock, Texas.

With the victory, the Rivercats swept the three-game Championship Series and will move on to face the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland Indians affiliate) on Tuesday in Memphis, TN.

This is the first time that the Giants won the Pacific Coast League since they won the 1977 title as the Phoenix Firebirds.

Tonight, was the fifth time this season that the Giants won a game by a 1-0 score, and it is most 1-0 wins in a season since 2008.

The only time that the Giants won more than five 1-0 games in a season since at least 1908 was the 1968 Giants and the 1933 Giants, as each team won six 1-0 games in a season.

#1 Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs who passed away at age 27 the autopsy showed that Skaggs took “alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone intoxication with terminal aspiration of gastric contents” according to a statement released by the Angels. Skaggs choked on his own vomit when the Angels were in Arlington in preparation to play the Texas Rangers, but on the day Skaggs passed away, the game was canceled due to his death.

#2 The Angels released a statement saying that the team will not rest until it gets a full investigation as to who supplied Skaggs with the painkillers and alcohol. The Skaggs family along with the Angels said that the team has hired Texas attorney Rusty Hardin to help with the investigation.

#3 The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Max Muncy on the 10-day IL due to a wrist fracture. Muncy hopes not to miss more than 10 days and has 33 home runs and 87 RBIs this season. Muncy took a pitch on the wrist as he prepared to swing the pitch was expected to break away but jammed him.

#4 San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey hit in the five-hole for the first time this season on Thursday night. Giants manager Bruce Bochy made the move stating that Posey hitting .246 with six home runs and 35 RBIs was a “change of scenery move.” Posey went 1-4 on Thursday night against San Diego and hit fifth again on Friday night.

#5 Hurricane Dorian was upgraded to a category four and is headed for Miami. The Miami Marlins reportedly will leave three panels of the roof of their park open to avoid giving lift to the roof. The hatches are baton down, but the question remains what condition the park will be in after the storm and what impact will Dorian have on the community in order for the Marlins to continue play. The Fish are scheduled to host the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

#1 Former Cincinnati Reds first baseman Tony Perez was a super star, a big part of Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine. Then he retired and later became the Reds manager, but was fired after about a month by the then late Reds owner Marge Schott. It was a firing that shocked not only Perez but also the team and many in the organization.

#2 After Perez’ firing at the Reds, he was later hired in Florida, joining the Miami Marlins as a front office executive. Then when Derek Jeter bought and fired former Marlin players Andre Dawson, Jeff Conine, former manager Jack McKeon and Perez. The four have said including Hall of Famers Dawson and Perez said their leaning towards boycotting Jeter’s induction at Cooperstown.

#3 With Perez considering not appearing at the Baseball Hall of Fame induction of Jeter and joined by three other big name ex-Marlins, how does this fly in the face of a Jeter induction and will this be more of a distraction at the Hall of Fame inductions as this most likely will be the topic of conversation at the Hall on the day in question?

#4 This being the Oakland Raiders’ final season in Oakland. The Raiders are in camp and play their first preseason game on August 10th against the Dallas Cowboys at the Coliseum. There will be a lot memories left as the Raiders will close out this season in Oakland.

#5 The Raiders have been the subject of the HBO special “Hard Knocks”. HBO had approached nearly all 30 teams about doing a “Hard Knocks” special, but didn’t get a yes. Fans and viewers have said the Oakland Raiders, who have bucked the NFL and the commissioner in decades past, would be the perfect team to do the special on. Raiders general manager Mike Mayock says does not approve of the special on his team, but nonetheless, the production crew is in camp and in production.

#2 It was the Houston Astros’ Gerrit Cole who was the pitcher who reached 200 strikeouts the fastest in the majors this season. Now, the team who has reached 200 home runs the fastest, are the Minnesota Twins making no secret they’re a fences swinging club.

#3 Speaking of home runs, the Boston Red Sox Mookie Betts’ three-home run game. He’s the fourth player in the last four days to hit three runs in a game.

#4 The New York Mets’ Robinson Cano, who had hit only six home runs all season, got three home runs on Tuesday starting the multiple home run derby for the last four days.

#5 The San Francisco Giants’ Madison Bumgarner sweepstakes is over, according to sources. Multiple teams inquired about acquiring the Giants superstar pitcher, but there were not enough prospects that clubs could up with to get MadBum. While the deadline is July 31st, the team is confident that Bumgarner is staying.
