On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, Ke’Bryan Hayes of the Pittsburgh Pirates is calling for the auto umpire as soon as possible. During Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves pitcher AJ Minter threw a 3-1 pitch that was outside and was ruled strike two by plate umpire Bill Miller. Hayes thought he was taking ball four and headed up to first base but had to come back. The Bucs were down 5-2 in the top of the eighth. Hayes is calling for the auto saying some umpires don’t care. He questioned Miller after the game about the call and Miller told him you had your chance to hit a homer.

#2 The Brewers on Monday night took a no hitter going into the 11th inning. Brewers pitchers Corbin Burnes, Devin Williams, Abner Uribe, and Joel Payamps almost made baseball history as they were two outs away from the game’s first 11 inning no hitter. The New York Yankees not only ended the no hitter but came back and won the game as the Yankees Kyle Higashioka doubled in the ghost runner in the bottom of the 13th inning.

#3 The Milwaukee Brewers called up third baseman Josh Donaldson from triple A Nashville and optioned Owen Miller to help the Brewers in their playoff drive. Donaldson started at third base on Monday night against the Miami Marlins. Donaldson was released by the New York Yankees hit .142, .434 slugging percentage, with 15 hits and 10 home runs and 15 RBIs.

#4 The Los Angeles Angels are open to trading superstar outfielder Mike Trout. Trout has seven years and $248 million left on his 12 year deal with the Halos on a contract worth $430 million. Trout had been plagued with back injuries. Trout has been out since July 3 with a broken hamate bone. Trout was hitting .263, 81 hits, 18 home run, 44 RBIs.

#5 The USA Today reports that the Oakland A’s would be one of two cities who would get a expansion team once the A’s move to Las Vegas at Tropicana Park in 2028. The other city under consideration is Nashville. High ranking baseball officials say that the city of Oakland needs to get a ballpark site in place (most likely the Howard Terminal), an ownership group who will secure the site. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said that in order for the city to extend the A’s extension before they move out of Oakland MLB needs to assure the city will get an expansion team and the A’s name brand stays with the City.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: Oakland Mayor wants to keep A’s name and wants an expansion team in exchange for lease extension

#1 Daniel, the Oakland A’s will still be at the Oakland Coliseum next season, the Nevada Independent reported that the A’s could make an early leap for Las Vegas but that has not been determined yet. The A’s are considering many venue options one of them is using their minor league facility in Vegas which the Aviators are using. A’s president David Kaval that there needs to be upgrades and the A’s might re-think using the Aviators 10,000 seat facility.

#2 The A’s reportedly have explored playing at the Oakland Coliseum until their new ballpark at the Tropicana on the strip is ready. There in lies the problem as Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao wants some concessions before the A’s get committed to the Coliseum as a lame duck team, one is the city of Oakland keeps the team name A’s and MLB commits to expanding to Oakland when expansion opens up.

#3 Kaval said that the decision of where the A’s will play after 2024 is totally up to MLB Commissioner and Rob Manfred. Kaval did say that the A’s have looked at three locations Oracle Park in San Francisco and share the park with the Giants, Aviators Park/Las Vegas ballpark in Vegas, and the Oakland Coliseum.

#4 Some have said that it’s a bad idea for the A’s to play at Aviators park because it becomes a spoiler to the A’s 2028 arrival and it kind of blows the hype of the team after being there for three years in the making and sharing the ballpark with the Giants might not be a good idea because that’s a lot of wear on the turf for 162 games.

#5 Staying at the Oakland Coliseum from 2025-2027 might be the best place and they might as well finish up what they started and visiting teams have said they want to play in Major League facility rather than playing in a minor league facility like Las Vegas.

MLB The Show podcast with Jim On Bases:

#1 Jim, the San Francisco Giants are entering their 53rd game where a starter was used for four innings or less. In those 53 games those starters threw 80 pitches or less. Jim is the opener working or hurting the Giants.

#2 The Giants are just a 1.5 games out of the NL Wild Card and still can work their way in and finish by plenty ahead. They have have to beat the good teams and have struggled against the Atlanta Braves during this three game series dropping the first two. How important is it for San Francisco to win these games like these against the Braves.

#3 Injuries are becoming the norm in MLB particularly here in the dog days of summer, let’s start with the Los Angeles Angels Shohei Ohtani who refused an MRI just weeks before he was shelved with the UCL diagnosis. Ohtani is still being used as a DH and will not pitch and might be on the way to his second Tommy John surgery.

#4 Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette left Saturday’s game with right quad tightness in the top of the sixth inning against the Cleveland Guardians and third baseman Matt Chapman left with middle finger inflammation. Chapman was sidelined earlier this season for the same issue. Bichette was hitting .316 and Chapman was hitting .248. The Jays are desperate for a playoff spot and are concerned about losing two of their key players.

#5 Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said the Oakland A’s could stay at the Oakland Coliseum until their new stadium is built in Las Vegas but with the condition that the city of Oakland is promised an expansion team or Oakland keeping the A’s name. Jim, what do you see those odds are? MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s whole goal was to get out of Oakland in the first place because of what he said bad attendance and the city wouldn’t build a ballpark, do you see him expanding to Oakland in the future or MLB has abandon Oakland for good?

#1 Daniel, tell us your thoughts as fans get ready for another reverse boycott this time at Oracle Park in San Francisco when Oakland A’s fans encourage San Francisco Giants to get on board with wearing black shirt with the word “Sell” in orange to join A’s fans in support of getting A’s owner John Fisher to sell the ball club to someone who’ll keep them in Oakland. The reverse boycott is scheduled for this coming Tue Jul 25th at Oracle Park.

#2 Daniel, the group called the Oakland 68’s named after the A’s first year in Oakland 1968 are part of the movement to fight to keep the A’s in Oakland. The 68’s in a statement from the their website said the A’s deserve a stadium at Howard Terminal. San Francisco Giants fans and A’s fans can be pretty vocal if both sets of fans come out to encourage Fisher to sell.

#3 The 68’s are hoping that Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao continue her fight to help keep the A’s in Oakland. It’s hopeful the documents she delivered to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred might have some sway to the other owners to vote to keep the A’s in Oakland.

#4 The latest news is that the MLB owners vote could take place months from now as they wait for the A’s to deliver the relocation application. The A’s on the relocation application are trying to solve where to play while the park in under construction between 2025-2027, the renderings of the park need to be put together and the design of the retractable roof needs to be addressed and how it’ll fit on nine acres of Tropicana land space.

#5 Daniel, on the A’s side of the coin how confident do you see Fisher and team president David Kaval in getting the votes and getting the shovels in the ground in Vegas?

MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O: Phils manager tossed for clock reset issues; Twins Polanco back on IL for hamstring injury; plus more

On the MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Philadelphia Phillies manager Ron Thompson was ejected after plate umpire Roberto Ortiz refused to reset the pitch clock after Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola requested a new baseball. Ortiz had threw out several baseballs and requested new ones and Ortiz felt that he had reached his quota of disposed baseballs. Thompson came out to argue that Ortiz should have reset the clock back from 10 seconds to 20 seconds with a runner on base in the sixth inning. Crew Chief Bill Miller got most of Thompson’s heat after ejecting Thompson, while Nola was facing the Los Angeles Dodgers David Peralta. Thompson questioned how Ortiz knew for sure that Nola was trying to stall for time by throwing out baseballs.

#2 The Minnesota Twins second baseman Jorge Polanco is back on the ten day IL due to a left hamstring. Polanco returned to the line up on June 1st from being out with the left hamstring injury. Polanco is hitting .250, with five home runs, 16 RBIs in 30 games.

#3 Los Angles Dodgers pitcher Shelby Miller was place on bereavement leave on Saturday. Miller 32, 1-0 ERA 2.57 and has relieved in 24 games for the Dodgers. Friday night Miller pitched two innings striking out three in two innings of work.

#4 The Oakland A’s for the first time have a won four straight games. The A’s who have baseball’s worst record at 16-50 and are 26.5 games in last place in the AL West. The A’s took two of the last three games in Pittsburgh and the first two games of a three game series in Milwaukee. Is it possible that they might have turned a page or too early to tell?

#5 Charlie lastly, the saga of the $380 million tax credits that the Oakland A’s are seeking from the state of Nevada and Clark County continues as the Nevada Assembly adjourned Thursday and will return on Monday to vote on whether or not to approve the bonds. If the bonds are not approved the A’s will have to find another deal to work out possibly with the City of Oakland and Mayor Sheng Thao who has a deal from the previous Howard Terminal bargaining session. If the Nevada Legislature approves the stadium bonds the Nevada State Assembly must approve the measure before Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo signs off on the deal.

#1 The Oakland A’s (10-36) open a three game series against the Houston Astros (25-19) on Friday night at Minute Maid Field. The Astros are in second place in the AL West and the A’s have a huge job in front of them if their going to beat Astros manager Dusty Baker and the Astros.

#2 Former Houston Astro Justin Verlander who now wears a New York Mets uniform heard it from the Mets fans when he took his first loss for New York. Needless to say the Mets fans expectations are win now or they will make you pay.

#3 Daniel, With the Astros having a different starting rotation from last season does and are in second place in the AL West and the A’s with a long, long, climb to catch them their best aim is to just go out and have a good series against Houston.

#4 Daniel, the Nevada Independent reported that the Nevada legislation and A’s are some $200 million apart for the tax credits needed to build at the Tropicana site in Las Vegas. The A’s need $395 million and the Nevada legislature are willing to part with $195 million in tax credits for the ballpark. The clock is ticking as both sides need to come to an agreement on the financing by June 4th.

#5 Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said that her door is still open on Howard Terminal if the A’s and the Nevada lawmakers can’t come to a financial agreement on the Tropicana siteThao stated today (Thursday) with ABC 7. Thao would resume negotiations on Howard Terminal. Sources have said that the City of Oakland and the A’s were 90% of the way to finalizing the deal on Howard Terminal until the A’s announced they had a binding agreement with the Wild Wild West site in Las Vegas back in mid April which is now off the table.

#1 One of the things that Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao emphasized during her press conference on Thursday at Oakland City Hall that the city was in the middle of negotiations with the Oakland A’s when she got the phone call on Wednesday night at 6:00pm from Oakland A’s team president David Kaval that the A’s have reached a land deal with Las Vegas and the team plans to break ground in 2024 and have a stadium ready by 2027.

#2 Mayor Thao expressed how shocked she was to have gotten Kaval’s call on Wednesday evening. Thao said that she’s done talking to the A’s and is looking forward to developing Howard Terminal without a ball park however saying towards the end of her press conference that she would take that call from the A’s if for some unforeseen mishap their still interested in staying in Oakland.

#3 Daniel, there were many comments coming from Oakland A’s fans and reporters on the news of the A’s moving to Las Vegas and some shared their memories of coming the Coliseum and seeing some of the greatest players over the years who came out to see the A’s during some of their glory years in the 70s and late 80s.

#4 As tough of a stand that Mayor Thao made in Thursday’s press conference there was anger in not being informed of a land deal in the works in Las Vegas and her trust in the A’s negotiations and all the work and money that went towards trying to secure Howard Terminal.

#5 Going forward for the rest of the season what will it look like for the A’s players and manager Mark Kotsay going forward with this lame duck situation hanging over their heads?

MLB podcast with Charlie O: A’s Howard Terminal chances improve as Appeals Court approve environmental report

#1 This week the First District Court of Appeals ruled that the Oakland A’s Howard Terminal project met sufficient standards in a City of Oakland review that said the A’s have met limits to water and pollution requirement at the downtown Jack London Square site as ruled by Judge Brad Seligman.

#2 The issue of off shore winds that wind hazards needs to be reduced as it effects the ball park according to the court ruling. The council voted with Judge Seligman 3-0 on the wind measure. The A’s and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao are working on a plan to reduce the wind hazards.

#3 The outcome of the Court of Appeals ruling sits favorably for the A’s and can be considered a big step towards building a new ball park at Howard Terminal. The Court rejected the claims by the plaintiffs saying that the A’s did not meet the standards on air quality, pollution controls, and traffic in regards to environmental standards. This is a similar type ruling that helped the NBA Sacramento Kings move in the direction to build Golden 1 Center.

#4 Mayor Thao who is on board with the project and said the city intends to upgrade the infrastructure and that the city and the A’s are one step closer to getting the project done after two previous court rulings in their favor. Further Thao plans to meet with the A’s regarding some of the other sticking points namely affordable housing and the court expects the A’s to get the wind hazards worked out.

#5 Charlie, we know San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer as in past discussions is opposed to the A’s moving to San Jose as the Giants claim that is their territory which put a huge road block in the way for the A’s to build in the South Bay. Fast forward how ironic would it be if the Howard Terminal project was approved and was able to move forward and front the Port of Oakland that could clearly be seen across the bay at Oracle Park?
