On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry:

#1 Oakland A’s first baseman Tyler Soderstrom hit back to back home runs one Sunday against Toronto and another Monday in San Diego. A’s manager Mark Kotsay is encouraged by Soderstrom’s improvement at the plate saying he’s getting better. Soderstrom is hitting .222 has 14 hits, 8 RBIs, and three home runs.

#2 Jerry, A’s reliever Lucas Erceg threw a 20 pitch bullpen session on Sunday. Erceg said he’s feeling healthy Kotsay said since Sunday Erceg has had no issues with the right forearm strain and came into relieve in Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Padres.

#3 Ross Stripling who has struggled all season with a 1-9 record and an ERA 5.82 is expected back in July his injury update is he’s a on a throwing program. Stripling is looking forward to increase the distance of his throws as Kotsay and the pitching coaches will determine when Stripling will be ready to see live action.

#4 Everybody is asking about Esteury Ruiz who last season lead the American League in stolen bases with 67. Ruiz is not having that kind of season this year. He’s battling a wrist injury he incurred when diving for a fly ball in the outfield in May. He was sent down to triple A Las Vegas to start the season. The A’s said there is no timetable for Ruiz’ return but he could return as soon as sometime this month.

#5 The A’s announced last week that they will be playing 10 percent of their home games away from Las Vegas to improve the team’s and the MLB brand. The A’s would play neutral site games anywhere from other minor league parks but the one top choice is they would play internationally where baseball wants to market and maybe expand.

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, lots of talk about the Chicago White Sox problems all around, lack of attendance, team doesn’t have enough hitters and pitching to win games, Sox have won only three games this season, they have won only one road game out 12 so far this season, and are in dead last place in the AL Central.

#2 Amaury, San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell is out with a left strained adductor and on the 15 day IL. Snell was a scratch on Wednesday’s day game at Oracle Park and was replaced by starter Ryan Walker in a bullpen game. Snell has been rocked in his last two starts Apr 14th vs. Tampa Bay giving up six hits and seven runs and Apr 19 against the Arizona Diamondbacks giving up nine hits and five runs.

#2 After getting swept in Cleveland in three games the Oakland A’s came to New York and won the first game of the three game series at Yankee Stadium on Monday on a Zack Gelof ninth inning two run homer. There are just some games that the A’s pull a rabbit out of the hat.

#3 It’s not often you get to see the A’s throw a shutout on the road but A’s starter JP Sears pitched six inning of shut out ball giving up three hits and striking out seven batters. A’s relievers Lucas Erceg and closer Mason Miller also kept the shutout in tact.

#4 Amaury if you had to point to one thing where the A’s improved a little this season and have had some success over the last few weeks what one thing would it be, JP Sears pitching, Zack Gelof’s hitting or the return Esteury Ruiz?

#5 Amaury, the San Francisco Giants are fourth in the NL West with the Dodgers, Padres, and Diamondbacks in front of them in the standings that said the Giants are only two games out of first place.

CAMPBELL CA–The 38th Annual Santa Clara Hot Stove Banquet occurred on Tuesday, January 9, at the Spacious Villa Ragusa in downtown Campbell. Since 1985, it has been a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. Their mission is a pure commitment to the baseball community of the Santa Clara Valley, the most populated area in the Bay Area.

To provide an opportunity for the baseball coaches and players to participate at the highest level and ensure recognition of their efforts. The awards recognized local Bay Area talent from many walks of life, including two champion Little League teams, but the common denominator for all is the great game of Baseball.

Their annual banquet (#38) is the event at which the committee recognizes and honors the accomplishments of deserving participants within our community. The funds from this banquet go directly to youth, high school, amateur, and collegiate baseball programs within the greater Santa Clara Valley. The approximately 500 attendees on Tuesday were significant league scouts, coaches, and professional baseball players at all levels.

Oakland A’s Baseball, Chris Townsend was master of ceremonies. The Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants had tables for this event. I spoke briefly with David Forst, General Manager of the A’s. I asked him the question most Bay Area baseball fans ask me: “Are the A’s going to play in Oakland in 2025? Since after this 2024 season begins in March, their lease on the Oakland Coliseum will expire, he responded, “I don’t know.”

It was a great night at the Villa Ragusa, where the memory of such great Bay Area baseball people was remembered at the top of the program. Ed Bressoud, MLB alumni and De Anza College, Head Coach/ NY and SF Giants, Red Sox, Mets, and Cardinals. Art Santo Domingo has been a member of the SF Giants and Oakland A’s organization for 26 combined years and was an MLB official scorer during both games of the A’s and Giants.

Tony Morici is a lifelong resident of San José, Bellarmine College Preparatory, and a University of Santa Clara graduate. Member of Silicon Valley Sports Hall of Fame and life-long backer of youth sports. They all passed in 2023.

Among this non-profit’s many benefactors and top brass were Mr.Cory (Obie) Obenour and Alex “Sandy” Wihtolf, President of Hot Stove SCV and MLB Alumni. Awards were given to High School students, community service, Umpires, Head Coaches, and Coach of the Year, plus many others, including college and minor league baseball players.

Lucas Erceg, pitcher of the Oakland A’s, was selected as MLB Player of the Year; he joined us later in our table. Nico Horner of the Cubs was born in Oakland and was named MLB Player of the Year. The Mark Marquess Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Mr. Ritch Price, De Anza CC, Cal Poly SLO, and KU Jayhawks baseball.

As I mentioned, after accepting the Media Award and thanking the SCV Hot Stove. “For me, it is always special to be in the same room with all these baseball people, from scouts and coaches to players and front office executives, because Baseball is a big family.”

I was incredibly humbled to be recognized by this incredible Bay Area organization.
