Sharks Defeat Kings 4-3 in OT, Karlsson Returns

LOS ANGELES- The San Jose Sharks defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 in overtime Thursday. Brent Burns, Nick Bonino, Alexander Barabanov and Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose. Zach Sawchenko made 33 saves for his first NHL win. Phillip Danault, Andreas Athanasiou and Trevor Moore scored for Los Angeles. Jonathan Quick made 26 saves in the loss.

Thursday saw the return of Erik Karlsson, Jonathan Dahlen and Jaycob Megna. Karlsson had two assists in 25:47 of ice time. After the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said:

“Erik was flying tonight. You could tell he was happy to be back and he was full of energy. I think our team looked like that too. You know, you get Megs and Karly back there, settle things down. You know, we’re not running around as much in our own end, and we’re spending more time in the other team’s end. So, it’s nice to sort of get some guys back from injury and look like a real team out there.”

The Sharks power play scored at 2:39 when Erik Karlsson made a pass to Brent Burns in the middle of blue line. Burns’ one-timer sent the puck in and out before you could blink. Karlsson and Couture got the assists.

Phillip Danault tied it up at 5:58. Sawchenko went to catch the puck on the initial shot but it bounced out of his glove. By then, he was out of position and when Danault found the puck, he had an open net to shoot at. Assists went to Trevor Moore and Andreas Athanasiou.

Athanasiou scored to give the Kings a lead eight seconds later. He took the shot from above the circle without seeming to look where he was shooting and it beat Sawchenko on the glove side. Assists went to Moore and Olli Maatta.

Moore made it 3-1 at 10:40 of the second period with a shorthanded goal. Danault and Moore played a little catch in the Sharks zone before Moore took the shot from the slot.

Nick Bonino trimmed the Kings lead at 12:13 with a power play goal. Jonathan Dahlen took a shot from inside the circle. Quick stopped it but it bounced over him and into the blue paint, where Bonino was able to nudge it over the line. Assists went to Dahlen and Jacob Middleton.

Alexander Barabanov tied it up at 1:21 of the third period. Erik Karlsson took a quick shot from up at the blue line and Barabanov managed to deflect it just as he arrived in front of the net. Assists went to Karlsson and Hertl.

Tomas Hertl scored the game winner at 1:15 of overtime. Hertl carried the puck over the line, across the ice and behind the net. When Hertl went past the net, Quick dove for the puck but missed it and Hertl carried on, around behind the net to score with a backhand. It was his first goal in 13 games. Assists went to Barabanov and Burns.

The shot count for the game was close, 36-30 Kings. In each period, the Sharks were within three shots of their opponent, a significant improvement over recent games. The Sharks won 53% of the face-offs.

The Sharks next play on Saturday at home, at 6:30 PM PT against the Kings again.

#1 The San Jose Sharks (24-25-7) are coming off some tough loses they’ve lost three straight games and their most recent loss to the Anaheim Ducks (27-22-9) 3-2 in overtime on Sunday was certainly an improvement over their 8-0 loss to the Nashville Predators on Saturday if your looking for a silver lining.

#2 The Sharks on Sunday grabbed a 2-0 lead but the Ducks scored twice in the second period to force a tie and got this game in an overtime.

#3 The Sharks got a goal each out of Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic the Sharks tried to improve their offensive output but the Ducks put up a good defensive output and shut the Sharks out in the third period.

#4 Mary Lisa, Zachary Sawchenko started for the Sharks stopping 33 Ducks shots and allowed three goals. Sawchenko also had a decent start against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tue Mar 1 though San Jose lost that game 3-1. Sawchenko allow two goals and faced 20 shots.

#5 Mary Lisa, the Sharks will now have back to back games with the Los Angeles Kings (32-19-7) which will be played in Los Angeles on Thursday and in San Jose on Saturday. The Kings have won three straight games going into Thursday’s game.

Meier Scores 5, Sharks Beat Kings 6-2; It’s Timo Time all the time

SAN JOSE– Timo Meier scored five goals in the San Jose Sharks (21-17-2) 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings (20-14-5) Monday afternoon. It was the first time in Sharks history that a Shark scored that many in one game. Rudolfs Balcers also scored, for the second game in a row. James Reimer made 39 saves for the win. Anze Kopitar and Mikey Anderson scored for the Kings and Jonathan Quick made 11 saves in the loss.

Apart from Meier’s stunning play Monday, the game also saw the Sharks’ struggling power play score twice, Tomas Hertl earn four assists and Erik Karlsson get three, including his 500th.

After the game, Sharks Head Coach talked about the game:

“I’m very happy and proud for Timo, I think he’s put a lot of hard work in. For our team, a team that hasn’t scored a lot and has played well of late and hasn’t gotten quite the results that I think we deserve, it was nice to see, as a team, one of our big guys go off like that.”

Timo Meier scored his first of the afternoon at 3:02 on the power play. From just inside the left face-off dot, Meier caught a cross-ice pass from Brent Burns and whipped into the net on the short side. Assists went to Burns and Erik Karlsson.

Rudolfs Balcers made it 2-0 at 15:56 of the first. Balcers sent the puck out of his zone to Hertl in the neutral zone. Hertl carried the puck along the blue line before shooting it right down the slot. Balcers caught it with the back of his stick and then shot it past Quick on the glove side.

Meier scored his second at 18:48, unassisted. While he skated across in front of the blue paint, the puck went off of his skate. He spun and gathered it up for a quick roofer.

He completed the hat trick 21 seconds later. Hertl dug the puck out of the corner and got it to Meier in a nice shooting spot. Meier’s shot did not go in but he moved to the other side of the net and cleaned up a rebound. Hertl got the assist.

The busy final minute was not over, as Anze Kopitar scored for Los Angeles with just 16 seconds left in the period. Kopitar took advantage of a turnover at the blue line and then charged into the zone for a shot from outside the face-off dot.

Meier started working a second hatty to start the second period, with another power play goal at 1:24. He caught a cross-ice pass from Erik Karlsson just outside the face-off dot and scored with a quick wrist shot. Assists went to Karlsson and Hertl.

Meier scored his fifth goal at 19:32 of the second. He caught a cross-ice pass from Hertl, brought the puck around a defender with a toe drag. He shot it past Quick’s glove, off the post and in. Assists went to Hertl and Karlsson.

Mikey Anderson scored the only third period goal to make it 6-2. Drew Doughty centered the puck from low in the zone and Anderson tipped it in. Assists went to Doughty and Viktor Arvidsson.

The Kings out-shot the Sharks 41-17 in the game. The Sharks had three power plays, scored on two of them with two shots. The Sharks’ penalty kill allowed four shots through three penalties. In the face-off circle, the Kings prevailed with 53% of the draws.

The Sharks next play in Seattle against the Kraken on Thursday at 7:00 PM PT.

#1 Len, how would you describe the San Jose Sharks contrasting overtime 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings and their 3-0 shutout loss on Thursday night against the New York Rangers?

#2 The Sharks struggled hard to figure out the goal tending antics of Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin who stopped all 37 shots against the Sharks for the shutout.

#3 How remarkable is it for defenseman Brent Burns to have an assist on all three goals in two straight games a first for a NHL defenseman doing it before Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Red Wings.

#4 Burns is getting a lot of minutes of late and on Thursday he got 25:57 minutes against the Rangers and Sharks head coach Bob Boughner says Burns will never short you in the work department.

#5 The Sharks will keep busy they host the Penguins on Saturday night a 7:30 puck drop and a matinee on Monday for Martin Luther King’s Birthday a 1:00pm start against the Los Angeles Kings at SAP Center.

#1 The San Jose Sharks (8-7-1) who had suffered a tough defeat on Sat Nov 13, 6-2 against the Colorado Avalanche (6-5-1) got dropped again to the St Louis Blues (9-5-2) on Thursday night in St Louis 4-1.

#2 The loss to the Blues was the Sharks third loss in four games. On Thursday the Sharks goaltender James Reimer saved 44 shots and allowed four goals for the loss.

#3 The Blues in their own right had a four game losing streak going and got big help from Brandon Saad who scored twice and goaltender Ville Husso stopped 26 shots to end the lost streak .

#4 Talk about the Logan Couture goal that was taken away in the first period at 7:17 after it was ruled that Jonathan Dahlen was offsides. Did that seem to change to course of the game?

#5 Up next for the Sharks are the Washington Capitals (10-2-5) who have won four of their last six games and won their last game in Los Angeles defeating the Kings (8-6-2) in a shutout 2-0. The Caps Garnet Hathaway scored both Caps goals for the win. How do you see the Caps and Sharks who face off tonight at SAP Center in San Jose.

#1 Matt, the Ottawa Senators returned to practice on Friday after having ten players on the Covid 19 protocol list. The Senators had three games postponed because of the positive tests and have not played since Sun Nov 14 and are expected to return to action Mon Nov 22 in Colorado.

#2 The Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty who got a knee to knee injury with Dallas Star defenseman Jani Hakanpaa on Oct 22 in a 3-2 overtime loss. Doughty was given eight weeks to recover and in his fourth week is just now skating with the club. Doughty is second in points with seven and six assists.

#3 The Anaheim Ducks left winger Max Comtois will be out at least six weeks due to hand surgery. Comtois had a small bone removed and missed the last three games and is on the Ducks injured reserve list. Comtois has just one assist in 13 games.

#4 The San Jose Sharks forward Kevin Lebanc has been suspended for one game for slew footing the St Louis Blues forward Tyler Bozak on Thu Nov 18th’s game in St Louis at 8:57 of the first period. When will Labanc start the suspension and could you talk about the play?

#5 Matt, talk about the Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid’s response regarding ESPN’s John Tortorella’s saying that McDavid needs to shut up about not getting penalties called, for McDavid not to talk about it and that he needs to change his game a bit. McDavid said he guessed he’d better shut up.

#1 The Calgary Flames forward Blake Coleman has been suspended one pre season game and one regular season game for boarding the Winnipeg Jets forward Jansen Harkins on Wed Oct 6 in Winnipeg. Matt talk about the play and Coleman’s suspension.

#2 In what is partly shocking but also one of the good wishes Montreal goaltender Carey Price has entered an assistance program. Carey was working out for his post knee surgery and had to recover from a non Covid 19 illness. Prices wife Angela said putting Price’s mental health comes first.

#3 Ottawa Senators 27 year old forward Brady Tkachuk remains an unrestricted free agent and will not make it to the Senators opening day roster which starts Oct 14, Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said Tkachuk was expected to be signed by Sep 22.

#4 The Los Angeles Kings center Quinton Byfield is on the injured reserve list since Wednesday due to a fractured left ankle. Byfield 19, left early in the third period on Tuesday after getting hit by the Arizona Coyotes Christian Fischer. Kings head coach Todd McLellan said Byfield was in good spirits and he was around the rink and the guys which was good.

#1 Mary Lisa, the NHL came out with a statement on Tuesday saying they are investigating San Jose Sharks Evander Kane for two separate issues the first for last week’s domestic violence and sexual assault allegations made against Kane by Kane’s wife Anna. Kane has said that Anna had been violent against him and he had filed a restraining order against Anna in Santa Clara Family Court.

#2 The second allegation that the league is looking is Kane had violated Covid 19 protocols the NHL was not forthcoming with details about how, when or what happened but a second investigation against Kane is coming.

#3 Mary Lisa the whole Kane situation has been taking up a lot of headline space how does that translate to the dressing room. The Sharks had split squad games on Sunday in Anaheim and Las Vegas and a game in San Jose against the Los Angeles Kings. We know head coach Bob Boughner had to handle some questions regarding Kane.

#4 Kane was coming off gambling allegations made by Anna who said that he bet on the Sharks and threw games. After an investigation by the NHL the league that started on Jul 31 the league could not find any documentation or witnesses that Kane had bet on hockey.

#5 In pre season action the Sharks played the Kings on Tuesday night the Sharks also got a win over the Vegas Golden Knights and a loss against the Anaheim Ducks last Sunday. After following their last two games in Vegas and in LA who are some of the players that stand out so far?

Sharks Preseason: Sharks Fall to Kings 4-3

SAN JOSE- The San Jose Sharks lost 4-3 to the Los Angeles Kings, at the SAP Center in San Jose. Jordan Spence, Kale Clague, Austin Wagner and Lias Andersson scored for Los Angeles. Jonathan Quick made 22 saves in the first half of the game and Garrett Sparks made 13 saves in the second half. Timo Meier, Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose. James Reimer made 18 saves in the first two periods, and Alexei Melnichuk made 11 saves in the third. Just under 7,000 people attended the preseason game.

Timo Meier scored the only first period goal, with assists to Jonathan Dahlen and Ryan Merkley at 13:39. The Sharks outshot the Kings 19-3 and had two scoreless power plays. They killed one penalty.

The Kings did all the scoring in the second period. Jordan Spence scored early at 5:40 with an assist to Aidan Dudas. The Kings scored two more in the final minute of the period. Kale Clague’s goal came at 19:15, with an assist to Vladimir Tkachev. Austin Wagner scored less than 30 seconds later.

The shot advantage flipped in the second, with the Kings outshooting the Sharks 18-7. The Kings took two penalties and the Sharks took one.

Lias Andersson scored another for the Kings, this time on the power play, at 1:59 of the third period. Alex Iafallo got an assist.

Brent Burns scored for the Sharks at 5:47, with assists to William Eklund and Tomas Hertl.

Midway through the third, Tomas Hertl and Austin Strand were given matching roughing penalties. A few minutes later, Mario Ferarro fought Jacob Doty. Both players received additional misconduct penalties.

In the final minute of the game, the Sharks pulled Melnichuk from the net for an extra skater with less than a minute remaining. Tomas Hertl scored at 19:19, with assists to Eklund and Erik Karlsson. Melnichuk went back in, only to come out again nine seconds later.

Before the necessary reshuffling that followed the third period penalties, the Sharks defensive pairings were: Brent Burns with Mario Ferarro, Mark-Edouard Vlasic with Ryan Merkley, and Erik Karlsson with Santeri Hatakka.

The Sharks play again on Thursday at 7:00 PM PT, in Anaheim against the Ducks.
