Giants take pitcher’s duel over Dodgers, 3-0

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers faced off in Game 2 of a three-game set at Oracle Park, with the Giants coming off a 3-1 win in a pitchers’ duel the night before. At 10-13, the Giants were looking to keep building toward a better record, having won four of their last five. It turned into another pitchers’ battle, this time between Tyler Mahle and Shohei Ohtani and the Giants prevented Los Angeles from any scoring coming away with a 3-0 shutout on Wednesday night.

Los Angeles threatened early in the first, putting runners on the corners after a bloop single from Freddie Freeman, but couldn’t push a run across. San Francisco created some traffic of its own in the bottom half with hits from Luis Arraez and Rafael Devers, but Ohtani struck out the side to keep the game scoreless. From there, both starters settled in. Mahle worked a clean second inning and matched Ohtani’s rhythm, as both teams went quietly through the second and third innings with back-to-back three up, three down frames.

The Dodgers applied pressure again in the fourth, putting runners in scoring position, but the Giants’ defense came through in a sequence that included a rundown finished by catcher Patrick Bailey to keep the game tied. Ohtani continued to deal on the other side, cruising through the middle innings and holding San Francisco hitless for a stretch while piling up strikeouts. The Giants’ best chance against him came in the sixth when Devers doubled and Matt Chapman reached, putting two runners in scoring position, but Ohtani worked out of it to preserve the scoreless tie.

Mahle matched him every step of the way. The right-hander, who entered the night 0-3 with a 7.23 ERA, was in complete control, keeping the Dodgers off balance and working efficiently through seven shutout innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out five, putting together his strongest outing of the season and giving the Giants exactly what they needed in a tight game.

The breakthrough finally came in the seventh, and it came quickly once Ohtani exited. After a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, Bailey jumped on a 1-2 pitch from reliever Jack Dreyer and sent it out for a no-doubt three-run home run, breaking the scoreless tie and giving the Giants a 3-0 lead.

From there, the bullpen took over. Caleb Kilian handled the eighth inning cleanly, and Ryan Walker closed it out in the ninth to secure the win. The Dodgers threatened late with a walk in the ninth, but couldn’t generate any real offense as the Giants locked down the shutout.

With the 3-0 win, the Giants secured the series and picked up their first series victory over the Dodgers since June 28-30, 2024, at Oracle Park. Mahle not only earned his first win with San Francisco, but also played a key role in ending Ohtani’s 53-game on-base streak, the longest in MLB since Shawn Green in 2000. He also became the first Giants pitcher since Sean Manaea in September 2023 to throw at least seven shutout innings against the Dodgers.

Ohtani was sharp as well, going six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, no walks and five hits allowed, lowering his ERA to 0.38 through four starts.

The Giants will look for the sweep Thursday with a 12:45 p.m. first pitch. Starters for the Thursday matinee for the Dodgers RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-0 ERA 3.24) for the Giants RHP Logan Webb (2-2 ERA 5.40).

In 2012, a young Yasiel Puig escaped communist Cuba via a smuggling operation arranged by Florida-based businessman Raul Pacheco, who paid smugglers $250,000. The trafficking ring transported him by boat, holding him in México until the payment was secured in exchange for 20% of his future MLB earnings.

On February 6, former Major League outfielder Yasiel Puig was found guilty of obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal investigators regarding his involvement in an illegal sports gambling operation. The man from Cienfuegos, Cuba, who enchanted baseball fans with his innate talents on the field now faces up to 20 years in federal prison, with sentencing scheduled for May 26, 2026.

Originally signed with the LA Dodgers, he was an electric, high-energy player, but also known for a controversial playing style that Dodgers Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully nicknamed “The Wild Horse”. In 2013, during his first major league season as a young outfielder for the LA Dodgers, I had the opportunity to interview the rookie Yasiel before a game in Anaheim against the Angels for our pre-game show on Fox Sports Los Angeles.

He was shy but very grateful to be playing in the major leagues, and he was very happy to be here in the United States playing baseball. As of late 2025, Yasiel Puig, 34, expressed a strong desire to return to MLB and finish his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers saying he loves the city, the fans, and the stadium, and that his passion to continue is strong.

That short (around 3-minute) interview with Yasiel was the only time I had the opportunity to talk with him. I remember that everybody in the Los Angeles media requested an interview with the young Cuban sensation at the time. The Dodgers appointed an interpreter since he didn’t speak English.

One of the Dodgers’ media people told me they were getting requests from media all over the US and from other countries to interview the young rookie. His life in Cuba, since he was a young boy, and his education was focused mostly on baseball.

Under the Cuban communist system, they train their kids to play baseball right after they can walk. Baseball has been the sport in Cuba for over 100 years. However, he only had a third-grade education. His focus was always baseball. Yasiel played professionally on the Serie Nacional de Béisbol de Cuba (National Baseball Series of Cuba), where he played for the Cienfuegos team from 2008 to 2009 and 2010 to 2011.

Was Yasiel Puig ever incarcerated in Cuba? Yasiel Puig was not formally incarcerated in a prison by the Cuban government, but he was detained by authorities during one of his failed attempts to defect. Before successfully escaping, he was detained for six days during a raid on a safe house during his third attempt to leave Cuba as a 2013 rookie, the Dodgers’ young Cuban was famously compared to Joe DiMaggio because of the record-setting pace of his debut month. His impact in 2013 was ranked second only to Joe DiMaggio’s 1936 debut Yasiel Puig played for seven years in the major leagues, six of those with the Dodgers, and later briefly with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians.

Working with José Mota on the LA Angels Spanish TV broadcast is as good as it gets in baseball broadcasting. José Mota grew up in the world of baseball alongside his father, Manuel (Manny) Mota, a legend in the Dominican Republic, Latin America, and especially with the Los Angeles Dodgers. I used to interview Manny Mota during his playing years in the late 1970s and later as a coach for Manager Tommy Lasorda.

Manny was one of the greatest pinch hitters I remember, a quality man with tremendous baseball knowledge, which he passed on to his son, José. Unlike radio, where all you need is two broadcasters and one engineer, Television requires a significantly larger crew due to the need for high-quality, real-time, multi-angle coverage of unpredictable, live action, as well as complex, on-site logistics.

Behind our spacious TV booth at Angels Stadium, our stage manager, a couple of audio people, producers, and a staff of approximately twelve, including those in the remote truck outside the stadium. Sometimes we were blessed with greatness sitting behind us in the booth, Rod Carew, Tim Salmon, and others.

On these LA Angels Fox Sports Network LA Telecast, José Mota handled all the commentary, and I handled the play-by-play. José played for the Cal State Fullerton Titans in the mid-1980s. A two-time All-America second baseman and a starting pitcher on the 1984 Cal State Fullerton team that won the College World Series. He was drafted in the second round of the 1985 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox out of Cal State Fullerton. He was a good and very smart baseball player and is now an excellent baseball analyst.

José Mota made his MLB debut on May 24, 1991, with the San Diego Padres. He appeared in parts of two seasons (1991 and 1995) for the Padres and Kansas City Royals, primarily appearing as a second baseman, shortstop, and utility player.

Prior to Television, José and I worked briefly on the radio for the LA Angels’ Spanish broadcasts, covering all 162 games, home and away. Today, José is a broadcaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Spanish-language radio network, the World Champions. His father, Manuel (Manny) Mota, is very proud of José and his career in broadcasting, both in Spanish and English. José Mota speaks the language of baseball.

During the years with the Angels in Anaheim, we covered such stars as Vladimir Guerrero, Mike Trout, and Shohei Ohtani, among many others. Our Executive Producer was the great Nick Davis, others in the media circle included Mr.Tim Mead, one of the great gentlemen and professionals I have ever met, Vice President of Communications for the Angels, and for whom I am forever grateful, because he hired me for Angels baseball. Good friends who were doing the broadcast on English radio, like Terry Smith, Mark Langston, plus Mark Gubicza, Patrick O’Neal on Angels TV. Mark Gubicza, “Guby,” called me “the most interesting man in the world” because he said I look a lot like the man in the famous beer commercials..

Our producer, César Sutil, always had great ideas for our pregame shows, locations, and interviews. Here in the photo, we were taping a pregame show during a warm afternoon inside the dugout at Angels Stadium. Sometimes one of the Angel stars would sit with us for an interview. Our Spanish TV broadcast booth was well decorated by José with a Caribbean flavor, and many of the people who would visit our booth (Including team owner Arturo “Artie” Moreno) would get a kick out of the Latino ambience. Mr.Moreno speaks conversational Spanish.

I will forever cherish those years with José Mota and the great people at the Los Angeles Angels. Working with the LA Angels, especially with José Mota, was among the happiest years of my career in broadcasting. It was fun as we both share a great love for the greatest game ever invented.

Can the Giants catch the Dodgers in 2026?

It is not too early to talk about the 2026 season, especially because an owners’ lockout after this year’s World Series is inevitable. The Super Bowl is coming to the South Bay in February at Levi’s Stadium, and right after that game, Adiós winter and Bienvenido Baseball.

Pitchers and Catchers will report to Spring Training by early to mid February. The Giants report to Scottsdale Stadium and the Dodgers to Camelback Ranch. Both in the Valley of the Sun,Phoenix,  Last season, the Giants finished 81-81 (3rd in the NL West), which is the definition of mediocre/unremarkable/no bueno. 

The focus now is on what these teams are doing to improve for the 2026 season. While the Giants are like a car that needs lots of repair, the Dodgers have been adding more stars and spending big money; what else is new? They are already favorites to win their third consecutive World Series.  2025 Dodger Stadium attendance: 4,012,470.

Let’s look at what these two eternal rivals have been doing during the winter.

-The Giants: Signed Adrian Houser for 2 years and Tyler Mahle for 1 year to bolster their rotation. This was an interesting acquisition: they also secured a top international shortstop, Luis Hernández, a 17-year-old Venezuelan who left his troubled country and traveled to the Dominican Republic. The Giants signed the kid for a $5 million bonus. However, the Giants’ most interesting move was not a player but hiring Tony Vitello as manager.

Their 40th manager in their history on October 22, 2025, marking the first time an MLB team appointed a manager directly from college baseball without any prior professional baseball experience (playing or coaching). While other managers have had limited or no pro playing time. At the time of this article, veteran pitcher Justin Verlander is being sought by a few teams; it appears the Giants have no interest in keeping the future Hall of Famer, who might soon sign with another team.

-The Dodgers. As we all know, there are two things a Giants fan loves more than anything else: 1-When the Giants win, and  2-When the Dodgers lose. This rivalry dates back to the days when both teams were in New York, separated by the Bronx and Brooklyn. Now they are 400 miles apart, and the rivalry is as hot as ever. The Giants have so far been frugal, not opening the bank to sign any big free-agent player.

The Dodgers signed elite closer Edwin Díaz to a 3-year, $69 million contract (the largest ever for a reliever), also signed outfielder Kyle Tucker to a 4-year, $240 million contract, and signed veteran outfielder Andy Ibañez, bolstering their 2026 roster. The Kyle Tucker deal added to their existing high-salary roster. Is there inequity in the game? Does it rain in Seattle? Last season, the Dodgers’ payroll on Opening Day was $325.9 million, the Miami Marlins’ was $69 million, and the Homeless A’s about the same.

The Dodgers’ signing of outfielder Kyle Tucker, adding to their existing high-salary roster, gives Giants fans another reason to hate the Dodgers. MLB owners are reportedly raging and determined to push for a salary cap in the next CBA, following the Dodgers’ massive contract with Tucker. Sources calling a salary cap push “100 percent certainty” that will lead to a lockout and possibly no baseball in 2027.

Major League Baseball owners last locked out players in December 2021, halting off-season activities and transactions for 99 days until a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was reached in March 2022, marking the first MLB work stoppage since the 1994-85 player strike.

Finally, If the Giants want to catch the Dodgers, they better do it now in the 2026 season because after that, there will be nobody warming up in the bullpen.

-New record: Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement established a new Major League Baseball record with 30 hits in a single postseason, breaking the previous record of 29 hits by Randy Arozarena. Clement established the record during Game 7 of the World Series this past Saturday in Toronto.

Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement now owns the new MLB record with 30 hits during the games this Postseason, which includes this World Series.

-An act of Solidarity. The Toronto Blue Jays have joined their counterparts on the Los Angeles Dodgers in paying tribute to Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia during the World Series.

Vesia was away from the team because of a “deeply personal family matter”, according to a statement by the Dodgers posted before game 1 of the World Series. The Dodgers’ pitchers were wearing Vesia’s #51 on the sides of their caps. Blue Jays players showed solidarity, and their relievers and starters did the same, wearing #51 on the sides of their caps.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he was touched to see the Blue Jays recognize an opponent amid the competition of the World Series.“It’s everything,” Roberts said before Saturday’s Game 7 in Toronto. “I didn’t learn that until after the game last night. I think it really speaks to the brotherhood of athletes. It just speaks to how much respect and love they have for one another. It’s a huge, huge tribute to Alex.”

-Did you see The Champions Trophy? The World Series Commissioner’s Trophy has engraved on its base the words “Presented by the Commissioner of Baseball”, a replica of the current commissioner’s signature, and the year and “WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS”. On the back, the winning team’s name is engraved each year: LA Dodgers 2025.

-The MVP Trophy? Since 2018, the MVP trophy has been a bronze sculpture of Willie Mays making “The Catch” on a wooden base. The recipient of the MVP Trophy this year was Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto who won three games in this 2025 World Series, earning him the MVP award. In a World Series for the ages, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games. The Dodgers have now won three titles in six years (and nine overall). Not easy to do in baseball today, with an expanded postseason, consistency in winning is more difficult.

The 2025 Dodgers were the favorite to win this year’s World Series since Spring Training, and they did. It took them 169 baseball games to accomplish one of the most difficult titles in any top professional sports league.

The last MLB team to win consecutive World Series was the New York Yankees, who won 3 in a row (1998-2000). The Dodgers were the first repeat champions in 25 years. This team set a new franchise record for attendance in 2025, becoming the first team in franchise history to surpass 4 million fans in a single season. Total 4,012,470 fans.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto won the Most Valuable Player of this 2025 World Series with a historic performance, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings in game 7, sending the game into extra innings, just one day after he threw 96 pitches to earn the win in game 6.

After Yamamoto won game six, he went to the training table, not to the Hotel like the rest of his teammates. He won two games of the four to give the Dodgers the victory. This whole World Series is worthy of a Hollywood movie, with the seventh game as the last few minutes for the conclusion, as they went into the 11th inning, a go-ahead homerun by Will Smith (the catcher) Saturday, much more popular than Will Smith (the actor) in Los Angeles, with main character Yamamoto (playing himself with sub-titles on the screen) the pitcher who pitched on zero rest.

The 11th was the First and Last time the Dodgers took the lead to win it all by a 5-4 final. The TV audience for the 2025 World Series Game 7 was expected to surpass 2020 20 million viewers in the U.S. alone. This makes it a very high-profile game, but official numbers for the specific event have not yet been released. One source indicates that Game 7 of the 2025 Finals averaged 16.4 million viewers. Another source mentions that every other 2025 World Series game has averaged over 11 million viewers
