OAKLAND–Oakland’s starter for the opening game of this season’s closing series, Adrián Martínez, has, at first glance, some pretty unimpressive numbers. The 25 year old native of Mexicali, who rode the Las Vegas-Oakland shuttle for most of 2022, took the mound at 4-6, 6.08.

Six loses and a no decision over 11 games, all as a starter, isn’t bad for a team like the 57-102 Athletics. But you can’t shrug off a 6.08 ERA by pointing to the team’s collective batting average of .216. Still, Martínez is capable of stretches of brilliant mound work.

In his August 28 start against the Yankees at the Coliseum, he held the 78-49 Bronx Bombers hitless over the first 4-2/3 innings he faced them, leaving after 5-1/3 and gaining his third victory of the campaign. It’s interesting that the Mexicalense entered that game with an earned run average of 6.08, exactly the same as what he brought to the mound tonight, five years later.

When theAthletics had finished off the Angels in a stunning come from behind extra inning victory, Martínez had, once more, started out strongly but faltered in the middle innings. He lasted 4-1/3 frames and gave up four runs, one of which was posthumous, on seven hits and two walks, having thrown 81 pitches, 47 counting as strikes. He escaped with a no decision and saw his ERA rise to 6.24. The pitching star of the game was Jared Koenig, the third hurler the Coliseum Crew called upon.

Before the game began, the A’s announced that Vimael Machín had gone on paternity leave and that fellow infielder Nate Mondou had been called up from Las Vegas to replace him.

Phil Nevin and Company chose another 25 year old to start for the Angels, Patrick Sandoval. The lefty brought a record of 6-9, 3.03 with him. The only Halo starter with a lower earned run average than that is their DH for tonight, Shohei Ohetani. Sanoval has been on a hot streak in his last 10 starts, with an ERA of 2.15 over that. span.

After a little trouble in the early innings, Sandoval grew stronger as the game went on, finishing in grand form. He hurled six innings of shutout ball, in which he held Oakland to five hits, a walk and a wild pitch, striking out six. He threw 97 pitches, 65 of them considered strikes. All he got for his efforts was a no decision that lowered his ERA to 2.91.

The green and gold mounted the first sustained threat of the evening in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with one down before Seth Brown forced Nick Allen out at home on a grounder to third and Sean Langeliers went down swinging to keep the game a scoreless tie.

Martínez’s control deserted him in the top of the fourth. After fanning Otani for the second straight time, he surrendered a double to left to Taylor. He recovered to whiff Anthony Rendon. His first two pitches to Matt Thaiss missed the plate and, rather than risk grooving one to the Halos’ first sacker, the A’s conceded him a walk.

A five pitch unintentional walk to Logan O’Hoppe loaded the bases, and Jo Andell’s grounder got between Clement and Allen on the left side of the infield to bring in Ward and Thaiss. It looked as if the two Oakland infielders may have distracted each other going for the ball.

The visitors tacked on another couple of runs in their half of the fifth. Liván Soto led off with a clean single to left, and, after Mike Trout fouled out to first, Ohtani, laced a two bagger to right to score Soto and send Martínez to showers, replaced by Austin Pruitt.

Ward drove his first offering against the center field wall to drive in Ohtani with the second run of the frame, both of them charged to Martínez. In spite of a free pass to Luis Rengifo, now playing third, Pruitt kept the Angels from enlarging their 4-1 lead.

The Athletics called on Jared Koenig to face the visitors in the top of the sixth. He held them hitless, facing them minimum through the ninth. The only baserunner he allowed came on an error by Allen in the seventh that was erased by a pitcher’s best friend.

Jimmy Herget replaced Sandoval and set the Athletics down in order in the seventh. They finally burst through the shutout barrier in the eighth. Murphy sent Ward to the warning track in right to corral his lead off fly.

Conner Capel pinch hit for Pinder and smacked a liner off Herget’s glove that went for a single. Next up, Brown smacked a triple to right, almost running into Capel on his way to third. Capel scored, making it 4-1, and Langelier’s single to right brought Brown in with the run that cut the Angel’s lead to 4-2. That signalled the end of Herget’s shift.

José Quijada replaced him, which brought Jonah Bride to the plate, hitting for García. Quijada retired him and Pache to quell the uprising.

Ernie Clement led off the bottom of the ninth with a double off the right centerfield wall. Allen worked a full count walk to put the potential tying run on base with no outs. Díaz also worked a full count but swung missed on a high and outside 95 mph four seamer.

The slumping Murphy, his BA down to .248, sent Ward to. the Eva Air advertisement behind the right field warning track to haul down the second out. Now it was Quijada vs. Capel. Capel took a strike, then a ball, then another ball, fouled off a four seamer, and took ball three. Ball four damn near beaned him.

The bases now were loaded with two out in the bottom of ninth, and Quijada had thrown his last pitch. The game’s outcome now depended on Aaron Loup on the mound and Seth Brown at the plate. Brown smacked a single into left, and the game was tied up at four, with the potential winning run on second in the person of Capel.

Langeliers refilled the bases with yet another 3-2 walk to bring up Jonah Bride. He swung at and missed a cutter, 0-1. And then flew out to right to send the game into extra innings.

With Soto at second as the zombie runner, Domingo Acevedo became the Athletics’ fourth pitcher of the night. He struck. out Trout and paid Ohtani the tribute of an intentional walk.Ward flew out to Brown at the left centerfield wall, and Soto motored over to third. Rengifo lined out to second to end the inning.

Zach Weiss entered the fray in the A’s half of the tenth with Bride placed on second. Pache sacrificed him over to third with Tony Kemp in the on deck circle, ready to pinch hit for Clement. He came to the plate and took a strike before sending a hot shot down the first base line that Thaiss couldn’t handle. It went for a hit and brought about a most amazing victory for the home team. It gave you hope for 2023, no matter where the A’s play in 2024.

Acevedo got the win and now is (4-4, 3.38). The loss went to Weiss, now (0-1, 2.19).

Cole Irwin (9-13, 4.11) will start tomorrow evening at 6:40 against the Angels’ Michael Lorenzen (8-6, 4.52).

Angels Sweep Oakland Winning 4-2 A’s 100th loss of the season

By Barbara Mason

Thursday night the Oakland A’s (56-100) faced Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels (70-86) in game three of their series. The A’s were trying to avoid a sweep but with Ohtani on the mound for the Halo’s it would turn out to be a tall order.

Los Angeles got on the scoreboard early in this game. Luis Rengifo homered and Ohtani singled driving in Mike Trout for a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Taylor Ward homered extending the Angels lead 3-0. The Halo’s knocked a third home run out of the park in the sixth inning off the bat of Max Stassi now leading 4-0. Los Angeles had 12 hits through six innings and the A’s were still looking for their first hit in this game. They were not even close to figuring Ohtani out who already had eight strikeouts.

Ohtani was looking for his 15th win of the year which looked more and more likely as this game wore on. Going into the seventh inning his pitch count was at 72 and still no hits for Oakland.

In the eighth inning the A’s Connor Capel got the A’s their first hit of the game. Next up at the plate was Dermis Garcia who got a second hit for Oakland. The A’s had put an end to Ohtani’s bid for a no-hitter.

The A’s loaded the bases in the ninth inning and Nick Allen scored off a Seth Brown ground out to second. Jonah Bride scored on a wild pitch but it was too little too late. The final was 4-2 and unfortunately this was loss number 100 for the A’s. They were swept but avoided getting shutout. This was the second time in A’s history that they lost 100 games in a season.

It was a tough start for Oakland’s Cole Irvin. He went four innings and allowed nine hits, three runs with six strikeouts. Collin Wiles relieved him in the fifth inning. He got the job done allowing only one hit and no runs. Norge Ruiz relieved in the sixth and seventh innings allowing three hits and one run. Sam Selman would close for Oakland.

The A’s will finish the season against the Angels after their series with the Mariners. Those final three games will be played at the Coliseum. Will we see Shohei Ohtani in that series? We will have to wait on that one.

Friday night the A’s will head up to Seattle to take on the Mariners. Ken Waldichuk (1-2, 7.15) will take the mound for Oakland. Seattle will start Logan Gilbert (13-6, 3.29). First pitch will be at 6:40 PM PT.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Oakland tax payers worried about Howard Terminal costs; A’s look to try their luck against Angels Ohtani at the Big A tonight

On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 The Howard Terminal project still up in the air the A’s brass has been to Las Vegas twice visiting prospective sites.

#2 The main concern is the Oakland taxpayer has regarding the cost of paying for the Howard Terminal Project which is estimated at $12 billion.

#3 Jerry one of the other major concerns regarding Howard Terminal is the infrastructure concerns is public transit with Amtrak and Southern Pacific railroads around the ballpark and how public transit will get fans and employees to the ballpark.

#4 The A’s currently in Anaheim and will see the Angels for another three series at the Oakland Coliseum next week starting Monday night. That might be a positive thing in playing a team twice in a week.

#5 The A’s go at it again tonight against the Angels the A’s will start Cole Irvin (9-12, 4.11) and for the Angels Shohei Ohtani (14-8, 2.47) a 6:38 pm first pitch at the Big A.

A’s Drop Game Two To Angels 4-1; Halos rally for 3 runs in fourth inning

A’s Drop Game Two To Angels 4-1

By Barbara Mason

After losing a close game to the Los Angeles Angels (69-86) Tuesday night, the Oakland A’s (56-99) were looking to even the series Wednesday night. The A’s were tied with the Angels into the eighth inning Tuesday night but Los Angeles scored a single run in the eighth and that was the ball game 4-3.

Oakland scored in tonights game in the first inning taking a 1-0 lead. Connor Capel singled driving in Tony Kemp for the early lead.

The Angels started hitting in the fourth inning. After a quiet Tuesday night, Mike Trout, who is always a threat, hit a homer to center to tie up the game 1-1. Matt Thaiss would follow with a single and Shohei Otani scored to give Los Angeles the lead 2-1. They would extend that lead when Matt Duffy grounded into a fielder’s choice to shortstop and Taylor Ward scored.

Taylor Ward would strike again in the eighth inning knocking one out of Angel Stadium giving Los Angeles a 4-1 lead. That would be the final. Oakland’s starting pitcher Adrian Martinez only lasted 4.2 innings allowing five hits and three runs. He had four strikeouts.

The A’s relief pitching only allowed two hits through the remainder of the game sending in five pitchers, Sam Selman, Norge Ruiz, Kirby Snead, Austin Pruitt and Domingo Acevedo.

The Angels starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen went five innings and allowed three hits and one run with eight strikeouts.

In Game Three of this series we will get to see Shohei Ohtani on the mound for Los Angeles currently with a 2.47 ERA and a 14-8 win /loss record. This could possibly be Ohtani’s last start this season. Cole Irvin will start for the A’s. He has a 4.05 ERA and a 9-12 win/lloss record. First pitch is scheduled for 6:38 PM PT.

A’s Drop Game One to Angels 4-3; Adell’s RBI drives in Duffy for walk off single

A’s Drop Game One To Angels 4-3

By Barbara Mason

Tuesday evening the Oakland A’s (56-98) traveled down to Angel Stadium to take on Los Angeles (68-86). There will be no post-season for either of these teams after a disappointing season for both.

Oakland had a great second inning scoring three runs. Christian Pache hit a single and Chad Pinder scored for the early 1-0 lead. In the same inning Nick Allen doubled to deep left, Jordan Diaz and Shea Langeliers both score to extend their lead 3-0.

Just when it looked like Oakland really had something going, the Angels had an equally successful second inning. Matt Thaiss singled driving Mike Ford home. Livan Soto hit a sacrifice fly and Matt Duffy scored for the Angels. Los Angels would tie this game up when Luis Rengifo singled and Thaiss scored and we had a new ball game 3-3.

After a rough start in the second inning for Angel’s pitcher Paul Sandoval, he kept the A’s off the scoreboard going into the fifth inning. Despite that he was pulled and relief pitcher Andrew Wantz would take over on the mound.

The Angels threatened in the sixth inning when Soto hit his first career triple. Oakland pitcher James Kaprielian got a huge out dismissing Rengifo who struck out swinging to end the inning.

This game remained tied going into the eighth inning. Los Angeles would break the tie when Jo Adell singled and Matt Duffy scored giving the Angels a 4-3 lead going into the ninth inning.

It was quick work for Los Angeles in the ninth inning. Sean Murphy grounded out, Dermis Garcia struck out, Jonah Bride flied out and that was the ball game.

The A’s stubbornly hung onto this game into the eighth inning but the Angels prevailed in the end with more offensive fire power. Los Angeles had 12 hits in the game and Oakland had 9 hits. Oakland came up just short in this one.

Tomorrow the A’s will try to even the score. Adrian Martinez will take the mound for Oakland with a 4-5 win loss record. Michael Lorenzen will start for the Angels. He has a 7-6 win loss record. First pitch will be at 6:38 PM PT.

Oakland A’s Preview: A’s prepare to pay a visit to Anaheim to face Ohtani and the Angels

Instead of getting the big fly the Los Angeles Angels Shohei Ohtani flies out against the Minnesota Twins on Sep 24, 2022 at Target Field in Minneapolis. The Oakland A’s open a three game series at the Big A in Anaheim Tue Sep 27, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The A’s have nine games left to play in 2022. Oakland has won 56 and lost 97. The team is hoping not to lose 100 games, but they would have to win seven of the last nine to avoid that fate. Their record would indicate that they would win three and lose six.

They will play the Los Angeles Angels six times, three at Anaheim and the last three at home. The A’s will travel to Seattle for three with the Mariners. Those games will occur after the A’s finish with the Angels on Thursday.

The Angels had high hopes for the 2022 season. The team played well early in the year. Their season derailed when they had a fourteen-game losing streak. The Angels fired their manager, Joe Maddon, in midseason. Maddon had great success managing the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs.

Maddon was the skipper of the Cubs when Chicago won its first World Series Crown in 2016. The Cubs ended 108 years of futility. The Angels, like many other teams, lost key players to injury. The Angels’ starting rotation did not live up to expectations.

The bullpen was a problem, too. Their three-time MVP Mike Trout spent time on the IL with a back injury. Their other MVP, Shohei Ohtani, continued to wow the baseball world with his exploits. As a pitcher, Ohtani is 14-8 and has an ERA of 2.47.

Ohtani probably is in the race for the AL Cy Young Award. As the Angels’ DH, Ohtani is hitting .271 with 34 home runs, 93 RBIs, 87 runs scored, and an OPS of .887. The AL 2022 MVP will be Ohtani or the New York Yankees’ slugger Aaron Judge. Judge may win baseball’s Triple Crown. He currently leads the league in hitting, home runs, and RBIs.

The Angels have other players that love to beat the A’s. Their second baseman Luis Rengifo had had key hits against the A’s. First baseman Jared Walsh and outfielder Taylor Ward can give the A’s headaches.

The A’s dismal season is coming to an end. The team has used 63 players. The A’s have made so many transactions in the last month. It’s a case of here today and gone tomorrow. The team will look at many new players to see if they fit into the A’s future next year.

The A’s will send James Kaprielian to the hill Tuesday night. Kap is 4-9, and his ERA is 4.43. Kaprielian had his best outing of the year last week when he went seven innings and allowed two hits. Kaprielian had made 34 prior starts without going past the sixth inning. The big righty would love to finish the season pitching well. Lefty Patrick Sandoval will go for the Angels. Sandoval is 6-9 with an era of 3.01.

Adrian Martinez pitches for Oakland on Wednesday. Martinez came to Oakland from the San Diego Padres in the trade for Seam Manaea. The 25-year-old righty from Mexicali, Mexico, is 4-5 with a high ERA of 6.10. The Angels will have Michael Lorenzen on the mound. Lorenzen is 7-6 and has an ERA of 4.78.

Thursday night’s game features lefty Cole Irvin for the A’s going against Shohei Ohtani of the Angels. Irvin has struggled a bit in the second half of the year. The A’s didn’t give Irvin a lot of run support earlier in the season. Irvin is 9-12, and his ERA is now 4.11. Ohtani is an incredible athlete. Ohtani has a fastball that can exceed 100 miles per hour. His hitting prowess was noted earlier in the preview.

Neither team will be going to the playoffs. Both teams will evaluate players who want to be on their roster for the 2023 season. Some of the A’s players to watch are Shea Langoliers, Nick Allen, Jonah Bride, Dermis Garcia, Jordan Diaz, and Conner Capel. Even though the teams won’t be in the playoffs, the fans should watch the games. Ohtani and Trout are not to be missed.

Oakland A’s game wrap: A’s can’t contain Alsonso hits for 5 RBIs; Scherzer shuts A’s down in 13-4 win

Oakland A’s pitcher Norge Ruiz rubs up the new baseball after delivering a home run ball to the New York Mets Pete Alonso who is in the background rounding the bases in the top of the fourth inning at the Oakland Coliseum on Sun Sep 25, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso took advantage of Oakland A’s pitching hitting for a home run, a double and five RBIs for a new Mets record. Mets pitcher Max Scherzer threw for six innings giving up just four hits and one run and struck out seven.

The Mets are now just a 1.5 in front of the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East. The Mets are rolling they have won eight of the last ten games. The Braves will host the Mets next week for a three game series and the battle for first place could boil down to those three games.

Alonso’s five RBIs pushed him to first past former Mets catcher Mike Piazza (1999) and David Wright (2008) who each had 124 RBIs. The home run by Alonso was his 39th of the 2022 season and Alonso even hit a home run on Saturday even though the Mets got walloped in that game 10-4. Sunday’s home run was Alonso’s second home in two straight games.

Alsonso said after the game that it was an honor to surpass Piazza and Wright for the team RBI record. Alonso got a two homer in the top of the fourth and got three RBIs in the top of the eighth and he shared credit saying he couldn’t do it without his teammates.

The A’s head to Anaheim in hopes to win a series at the Big A on Tuesday as they will start James Kaprielian (4-9, 4.43) and for the Angels Patrick Sandoval (6-3, 3.01) first pitch 6:38 pm PDT.
