Sharks Fall 5-3 to Oilers, Home Win Streak for Oilers Against Sharks at nine

The San Jose Sharks lost 5-3 to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor Murphy, Vasily Podkolzin, Max Jones and Zach Hyman scored for the Oilers. Connor Ingram made 27 saves for the win. Dmitry Orlov, Pavol Regenda and Kiefer Sherwood scored for the Sharks. Alex Nedeljkovic made 32 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic talked about the role of the Sharks penalty kill in the third period: “The whole PK did an unbelievable job of taking back the momentum for us. I just think we gotta kind of take advantage of that a little bit.”

Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky was asked about how the ice time was allotted late in the game. He said: “For four years we’ve worked on development and getting guys better and kind of handing some things to some players. You’ve gotta earn your ice from here on out.”

Dmitry Orlov got the Sharks on the board first, 7:24 into the game. He scored with a wrist shot from close in after receiving a pass from Alexander Wennberg. An assist also went to Kiefer Sherwood.

By the end of the period, the Oilers had three goals, from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor Murphy and Vasily Podkolzin. One of those goals came on the power play.

The shots were close, 10-8 Edmonton. The Sharks took two penalties and the Oilers took one.

The Sharks scored twice in the second period, with goals from Pavol Regenda and Kiefer Sherwood. The shots were close again, 15-12 Sharks. There were no penalties called in the second.

In the third period, the Oilers found another gear and the Sharks did not. The Oilers outshot the Sharks 15-7 and had two goals, from Max Jones and Zach Hyman. The Sharks took two penalties and the Oilers took none.

The Sharks next play on Thursday at 7:00 PM PT in San Jose against the Buffalo Sabres.

Sharks Fall 6-3 to Sabres, Quinn’s First NHL Hat Trick

The San Jose Sharks (30-26-6) lost 6-3 to the Buffalo Sabres (40-19-6) on Tuesday. Alex Tuch, Beck Malenstyn and Jason Zucker scored for the Sabres while Jack Quinn scored his first NHL hat trick. Alex Lyon made 17 saves for the win. Macklin Celebrini, Kiefer Sherwood and Alex Wennberg scored for the Sharks. Yaroslav Askarov made 20 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks veteran forward said: “a team with their offensive capabilities, if you’re not defending hard, they’re going to expose you.” As for the next game, his advice is “be the more desperate team right from the get-go next game and play Sharks hockey, same brand of hockey that’s led us to the year we’ve had so far.”

The Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky said: “We had some moments where we thought we could get out of the hole and next thing you know we shoot ourselves in the foot again.”

Buffalo’s Jack Quinn started the scoring at 4:12 of the first period. Quinn’s wrist shot found the back off the net after a give and go on the way into the zone with Jason Zucker. Assists went to Zucker and Ryan McLeod.

Alex Tuch tipped Rasmus Dahlin’s shot from the blue line to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead at 5:39. Mattias Samuelsson also got an assist.

Macklin Celebrini cut the lead to one with a wrist shot at 12:54. Will Smith got the assist.

Buffalo outshot the Sharks 8-5 in the first period. At 15:34 the teams erupted into a series of fights and penalties. It started with a fight between Zack Ostapchuk and Logan Stanley. Seconds later came a fight between Barclay Goodrow and Beck Malenstyn after Malenstyn hit Celebrini. Apart from that, it was a whistle-free period.

Beck Malenstyn restored the two-goal lead for the Sabres at 4:59 of the second period. He scored with a wrist shot after carrying the puck into the zone and right up the slot. Assists went to Peyton Krebs and Rasmus Dahlin.

Jason Zucker made it 4-1 at 8:51 with a backhand shot from right on the edge of the blue paint. He caught a rebound from Jack Quinn’s shot. Owen Power also got an assist.

Kiefer Sherwood trimmed the lead with a goal for the Sharks at 19:29. He scored with a snap shot from the faceoff circle. Mario Ferraro and Alex Wennberg got the assists.

Buffalo outshot the Sharks 12-8 in the second period. The Sharks had one power play mid-period but special teams canceled each other out.

Jack Quinn made it 5-2 42 seconds into the third period. Quinn’s goal came off a snap shot from the slot, with assists to Ryan McLeod and Dahlin, Dahlin’s third of the game.

The Sharks power play scored at 6:56. Alex Wennberg’s backhander went in with an assist from Tyler Toffoli.

Jack Quinn completed his hat-trick with a backhand shot into an empty net at 17:14. Ryan McLeod got the assist, his third in the game.

The Sharks next play on Thursday at 4:00 PM PT in Boston against the Bruins.

Sharks Fall 4-2 to Avalanche, Losing Streak at 4 Going Into Olympic Break

The San Jose Sharks lost 4-2 to the Colorado Avalanche Wednesday. Artturi Lehkonen, Josh Manson and Brock Nelson scored for the Avalanche. MacKenzie Blackwood made 23 saves for the win. Timothy Liljegren and Philipp Kurashev scored for the Sharks. Yaroslav Askarov made 38 saves in the loss. The loss and the three before it saw the Sharks plummet out of a playoff position.

In the final Sharks game before the Olympic break, Kiefer Sherwood made his debut in teal. He finished the game with one shot, one blocked shot, four hits and two penalty minutes. After the game, he discussed the team’s failure to start on time, despite a good effort in the third period: “The League’s too unforgiving to not play a full 60. So we’ll take the lesson and move on and be ready to get our work boots on the second half.”

Of the upcoming break, Sherwood said: “Our team needs a break. Obviously it comes at a good time. I know that was my first game so obviously I wish we’d get more. We’ll light the fire during break and come ready to rage in the second half.”

In a scoreless first period, the Avalanche outshot the Sharks 14 to 5. Each team took two penalties. The second period was Artturi Lehkonen’s time to shine. He scored the first goal at 1:05, a deflected shot from Valeri Nichushkin. An assist also went to Cale Makar.

His second goal came at 15:47, a snap shot from the top of the faceoff circle. Assists went to Nathan MacKinnon and Nichushkin.

Colorado outshot San Jose 17-8 in the second period, with one penalty to each team.

The Sharks tied the game early in the third period. Timothy Liljegren scored with a slap shot just 43 seconds in. Assists went to Alexander Wennberg and John Klingberg.

Philipp Kurashev tied it at 3:34 with a wrist shot after taking the puck from the neutral zone to the net.

During four-on-four play with Macklin Celebrini and Brent Burns in the box, Josh Manson scored with a slap shot at 12:44. Assists went to Nichushkin and MacKinnon.

Brock Nelson scored with a backhand into an empty net at 18:43.

After the NHL returns from the Olympic break, the Sharks will host the Calagry Flames on February 26 at 7:00 PM PT.

Sharks Fall 4-3 to Canucks, Demko 12-0 Against Sharks

The San Jose Sharks fell 4-3 to the Vancouver Canucks Monday in the last game before Christmas. Brock Boeser, Kiefer Sherwood and Elias Pettersson scored for the Canucks, with Pettersson scoring twice. Thatcher Demko made 26 saves for the win. William Eklund, Cody Ceci and Luke Kunin scored for the Sharks. Yaroslav Askarov made 20 saves in the loss.

The win was Thatcher Demko’s 12th against the Sharks, maintaining a perfect record against San Jose. While the Sharks improved their third period performance, a brief collapse in the second period was the difference in the game. After the game, Barclay Goodrow talked about that collapse:

“A couple pucks we didn’t get deep, I failed to get behind their D, they turn it up, it’s in the back of our net. That created momentum for their team and next thing you know they’ve scored three. Obviously if we don’t have that little stretch in the game it might be a different outcome.”

Shortly after being hit hard into the boards by Tyler Myers, William Eklund scored the first goal of the game. On a five-on-three power play, Eklund took the shot from the faceoff circle through traffic. Assists went to Mikael Granlund and Macklin Celebrini. The goal was scored at 11:36 of the first period.

Brock Boeser tied the game at 14:10. Skating to the net, he tipped in a shot from Quinn Hughes. An assist also went to Vincent Desharmais.

Though Eklund played through the period, he did not return after the first intermission.

The Sharks outshot the Canucks 10-6 in the first period. Each team took two penalties and a fighting major.

Kiefer Sherwood gave the Canucks a lead at 16:42 of the second period. Sherwood skated into the Sharks zone and shot around Henry Thrun. Assists went to Teddy Blueger and Nils Hoglander.

Elias Pettersson scored Vancouver’s third goal of the game at 17:08 of the period. The Sharks challenged the goal for goaltender interference. While Connor Garland made some contact with Askarov, the NHL upheld the call on the ice, putting the Sharks on the penalty kill.

The Canucks made it 4-1 on that power play. Elias Pettersson Had too much time to pick his shot and he used it to put the puck in the top corner. Assists went to J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes.

Vancouver outshot the Sharks 14-6 in the second period. Early in the third period, Henry Thrun took a shot to the face and had to leave the ice for repairs. He did return to the game with a gash on hi8s forehead. Elias Pettersson took one shift in the third period and then left the game.

Cody Ceci made it 4-2 with a shot from the point at 4:21 of the third period. Demko almost stopped it but it trickled through. An assist went to Fabian Zetterlund.

With just under 2:30 to go, the Sharks pulled Askarov for an extra skater. With six seconds left in the game, Luke Kunin caught a rebound and shot it in from a tight angle. Assists went to Celebrini and Toffoli.

The Sharks outshot the Canucks 14-4 in the third period.

The Sharks next play on Friday at 7:30 PM PT in San Jose against the Vegas Golden Knights.
