Oakland A’s podcast with Jenny Cavnar: Final Thoughts on A’s last season in Oakland

On Oakland A’s podcast with Jenny Cavnar:

It’s emotional you feel it I think more sadness and you feel a lot of memories if you want to equate to anything you compare to a celebration of life. I think there have been fans who rightfully have been very angry. You have to allow those feelings to subside to know that this is the final game at the Coliseum.

It’s a closing chapter in city where this franchise has so much history from Philadelphia, Kansas City, obviously the time in Oakland so special to be able to come in and learn that history but also to learn it through the eyes of the fans.

Oakland A’s and Major League Baseball’s first full time lead TV play by play female announcer Jenny Cavnar is under an avalanche of scrutiny from viewers of A’s televised games as announced by Cavnar. A petition is being circulated that as of Tuesday had over 620 signatures that demand the Oakland A’s fire Cavnar forthwith.

Some of the signers cite that she has no emotion in her home run calls, that she’s not a voice for baseball, that she went against former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf because Schaaf didn’t do anything to get a ballpark built in Oakland for the A’s at the time Schaaf was mayor.

Others who wrote on Awful Announcing’s X platform quoting RichDT “She really is not good. She needs more experience somewhere else. She hardly starts conversations during the game. Her calls of HR’s for the A’s are not good. Chris Caray does a better job in my opinion and comes from a legendary broadcasting family.” also JWP303 wrote, “No excuse for outright misogyny but she’s always been a tough listen as a broadcaster. As a reporter, calling games, in the studio… never was a fan in CO. Doris Burke, she is not.”

Those who criticize Cavnar showed one video one of her calling an RBI double hit by he A’s Abraham Toro that went over Orioles centerfielder’s Ryan McKenna’s head in Baltimore scoring Brent Rooker from second and her saying “over his head it goes and coming in home, how about we have ourselves and even up game.”

Cavnar who is in the broadcasting wing of the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for becoming the first lead full time play by play announcer in MLB history just completed her first month of announcing in that role. Cavnar has been defended by other media outlets namely the San Francisco Chronicle who said basically it’s Cavnar’s first year as a full time announcer in the lead role maybe she needs some time to review and improve on some her calls.

From all appearances some say Cavnar is being criticized because she is a woman, she doesn’t know how to make the right calls on home runs and that she has no emotion and some said she was just awful. The Chronicle would argue regarding Mayor Schaaf was what the criticism of Schaaf was at the time when anything on an Oakland ballpark seemed stalled and that Cavnar’s home run calls are fairly standard.

To have a petition now after her first month of work is premature take a look at her work after the entire regular season has been completed. Fans demanding that she should be fired doesn’t seem really fair. She’s in a new job, a new market, and yes maybe she made some tough calls at the mic but Cavnar should be given the chance to work on some things rather than blow it up now.

There are some rough patches but if Cavnar puts her shoulder into it she can make the necessary improvements. Also there is no way that team president David Kaval or owner John Fisher will let go of Cavnar they stand behind her and are proud to have a pioneer like her who represents the team in the Hall of Fame.

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: Super Bowl KC Parade suspects charged with murder in shooting; Yankees Judge will need medical treatment on toe for rest of career; plus more news

Jackson County KS prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announces that two adult suspects have been charged with murder in the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting where one person was killed and 22 were injured. Here Baker addresses the press at the Jackson County Courthouse on Tue Feb 20, 2024. (photo by the Kansas City Star)

On Headline Sports podcast with Jessica:

#1 Jessica, taking a look at the two suspects in the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shootings two adults charged with murder two juveniles are in custody. According to court documents Lyndell Mays 22 of Raytown MO got into an argument with Dominic Miller 18 of Kansas City according to Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker, Mays produced a hand gun. Almost immediately others produced hand guns and Miller produced a firearm as well and both adults are being charged with murder. Baker said it was Miller’s weapon according to the evidence struck Lisa Lopez Galvan who died at the scene. Baker said the investigation is on going and both adult suspects are being held on a $1 million bond.

#2 Jessica, the New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge said at the Yankees training camp in Tampa that his toe will need medical attention for the rest of his career. Judge last season tore a ligament in his right big toe resulting in Judge missing 42 games after colliding with the right field fence at Dodger Stadium on June 3. It was Judge’s injury that played a huge role in the Yankees falling out of contention from post season. It’s even at a point where Judge won’t even talk about his future past the 2024 season.

#3 Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said regarding Unions who are against the Washington Wizards of the NBA and the Washington Capitals of the NHL moving from DC to Norther Virginia that the Unions back tracked after they bargained in good faith to move the teams. Union workers are opposed to the move which some can’t make the move and transition to Northern Virginia due to reasons from transportation issues to just uprooting and relocating. UNITE HERE Local 25 who represents it’s workers who want the Capitals and Wizards to stay in DC has Youngkin saying “Virginia is a right-to-work state and unreasonable demands from union leaders will not derail this project. I will continue to work with the General Assembly to complete this opportunity and bring $12 billion in economic contributions that will fund shared priorities in Virginia,” It’s very possible that Youngkin, the Capitals, and the Wizards might have a tough time finding a union contractor will build the arena in Northern Virginia because unions and labor have stuck together in the past.

#4 Jessica you got a chance to cover the NHL Navy Federal Credit Union Stadium Series at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford over the weekend that saw the New Jersey Devils win game 1 on Saturday over the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3. Then in game 2 the New York Rangers just edged out the New York Islanders on Sunday 6-5 in overtime. Two exciting games what was that experience like to be there for these two outdoor games hosted by the NHL.

#5 Former Chicago Cubs legendary broadcaster the late Harry Caray’s great grandson Chris Caray will become the fourth generation of Carays who will broadcast for a MLB team. Caray will call Oakland A’s games on NBC Sports California TV with play by play announcer Jenny Cavnar who became the first woman in MLB history to be lead TV announcer and color announcer and former A’s pitcher Dallas Braden will be returning. Caray did double A play by play in Amarillo for the Sod Poodles the Major League affiliate for Arizona Diamondbacks. Caray also had a journalism degree from the University of Georgia. Harry Caray was an Oakland A’s broadcaster for just one season back in 1970.

#6 The Houston Rockets owners the Fertitta Family were sad to announce on Tuesday the passing of former Rockets star Robert Reid has passed away from a long bout with cancer at age 68. Reid was instrumental helping the Rockets in their first two NBA Finals in 1980-81 and 1985-86. Reid also played for Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trailblazers, and Philadelphia 76ers.
