OAKLAND–There are likely outcomes when Paul Blackburn starts a game for the Oakland Athletics (28-57). The 28 year old toed the rubber, took the mound for the green and gold at 6:41 this evening with a record of 6-3, 2.90, there’s a good chance that Oakland will either 1) win, 2) take a lead into the late innings and blow it, 3) be embroiled in a tight contest into the late innings and then fall irremediably behind, 4) waste several scoring opportunities, or 5) some combination of the previous four options.

The second and third possibilities will have the best odds of occurring with a reliever toiling for Oakland. But it wasn’t the bullpen that was responsible for the 8-5 shellacking that the Athletics suffered tonight.

Blackburn, who leads the A’s starters in wins and ERA, was opposed by Houston Astros’ (55-28) José Urquidi, who brought an impressive 7-3 won-lost record with him to the mound and has excellent control. He also carried the baggage of a decidedly unimpressive earned run average of 4.15 with him.

He is a fly ball pitcher, which made his task more difficult in the early innings on this warm, dry evening in Oakland On the other hand, Urquidy undoubtedly was buoyed by knowing that the Astros had a team batting average of .242 while Blackburn had to rely for run support on Oakland’s team BA of .211.

Urquidy had some trouble early in the game, but bounced back to pitch eight solid innings and get the win, making his season’s numbers 8-4, 4.08. He gave up three runs, all earned, on four hits, one them for four bases, and a walk. He struck out two and threw 98 pitches, only 29 of which were balls.

Blackburn was magnificent … for three innings, after which the A’s were leading, 2-0. He fell apart in the fourth and was through for the evening while the sun still was out, throwing a total of 86 pitches, 51 of which were counted as strikes, over four plus frames. He yielded six runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, two of them for the distance, and a walk. He took the loss, bringing his record to 6-4, 3.36

After Blackburn had set down the first six Astros he faced, the first three of those on strikeouts, the A’s took a 2-0 lead on Elvis Andrus’s sixth home run of the year. It came with one down and Christian Bethancourt on base after he had singled sharply to left. The veteran shortstop’s round tripper flew over the Ring Central sign and the outstretched glove of leaping left fielder Kyle Tucker. It came on a 92mph four seamer.

Blackburn’s second time through the ‘stros’ lineup wasn’t as much of a breeze as his perfect, 40 pitch, five strikeout first three innings were. José Altuve took him to a full count before grounding out to make it ten straight Astros retired.

Then Aldemys Díaz laced a double to left, and Yordán Alvarez hit another, this one off the left field wall. The third blast to left came off the bat of Alex Bregman. He, too, slammed the ball to left, but this one left the park, landing 397 feet from the plate. Bregman’s 11th dinger of ’22, was hit off a first pitch 90mph sinker, and, just like that, the A’s’ two run lead morphed into a 3-2 deficit.

In the top of the fifth, the bottom third of Houston’s order picked up where the top two-thirds had left off in the fourth. Jake Meyers laced a single to left center and moved to second on Mauricio Dubón’s sharp single to left. (You can sense a sinister pattern here).

Martín Maldonado, batting ninth, took Blackburn deep to left center, 394 feet deep, on a sloooooow slider (78mph). It was the catcher’s eighth home run and 19th, 20th, and 21 RBI for the season.

After Blackburn walked Altuve and a single by Díaz moved him to third, Sam Moll relieved the beleaguered Blackburn. It took Moll only four pitches to stop the bleeding. Alvarez popped out to short, and Bregman gave Moll a pitcher’s best friend, 6-4-3 double play, Andrus to Allen to Brown.

The top of the sixth began well for Moll, who retired Tucker on an easy fly to left center for the first out. Then Gurriel hit a fly to center that Laureano came in on as the ball flew over his head for what was at first ruled a two base error but later was changed to a double.

Laureano clearly had misplayed the ball, but the rule book decrees that misjudgements shouldn’t be scored as errors. Meyers followed that hit with a seeing eye single to center, and there were two runners in scoring position with but a single out.

Dubón skied out to Piscotty in medium deep right; Gurriel held third. This brought Maldonado the plate, looking to perform an encore of his three run blast of the previous . This time he struck out.

A second southpaw Sam replaced Moll for the seventh, Sam Selman, recalled last Sunday from Las Vegas He handled his first two batters easily but walked Díaz on four pitches and surrendered a double to the left field corner to Bregman.

Tucker drove in Díaz, despite a valiant effort by Vimael Machín, on a single to third that brought Alvarez to within 90 feet of home. He travelled that distance thanks to Gurriel´s single to left, which also moved Tucker up to second. After Meyers fanned to end the frame, Houston was leading 8-2.

Oakland managed to score a run in their half of the seventh on Sean Murphy’s leadoff double, Andrus’s grounder to short that moved him to third, and Piscotty’s sacrifice foul fly to right. They now trailed by five.

The A’s brought in their third straight lefty, Kirby Snead, to toss the visitors’ eighth. He was hit hard and gave up a two base hit to Altuve, but he escaped the frame unscored upon and returned to pitch the ninth.

He caught Alvarez, who came to bat to chants of “MVP” by the Astros’ fans present among the 6,012 attendees. He induced a weak grounder to the right of the mound from Bregman and was unable to field it. That error might have proved costly to Snead. He walked Tucker and allowed a base knock to Gurriel but recovered to strike Meyers out looking and get Dubón to fly out to right.

Seth Martínez set the A’s down in order in the ninth.

Tomorrow at 1:07 Framber Valdéz (8-3, 2.67) will go against an Oakand starter who has yet to be announced.

On the A’s podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah, Oakland A’s number one starter Frankie Montas is suffering from a inflamed shoulder in his last outing he was lifted after pitching for just one inning.

#2 Montas was going to be showcased going into the July trade deadline but with the inflamed shoulder there will no doubt be teams who will be on the side of caution.

#3 On missing Montas in the rotation the A’s who are coming off winning a series for the first time since the month of May taking two out of three from the Toronto Blue Jays were hoping Montas could be in the rotation to continue pitching quality games.

#4 The Houston Astros are in Friday night and they’re loaded bunch taking a look one of their big boppers designated hitter Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez is hitting a healthy .313 with 25 home runs and 59 RBIs.

#5 The Astros will be starting Jose Urquidy (7-3, 4.15) the A’s as of Thursday had not named a starter for Friday’s game a 6:40 pm PDT first pitch at the Coliseum.

OAKLAND–The Oakland A’s (28-56) are hosting the Houston Astros for three games starting Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum. The teams last met for three games over the Memorial Day weekend here in Oakland. The Astros swept the A’s. The teams have 16 games left to play before the end of the season.

Let’s look at how each team is doing. The Astros are 53-28. They have the second-best record in all of baseball. The Astros are in first place in the American League Western Division. They lead the second-place Seattle Mariners by 13 games. On the other hand, the A’s have a woeful record of 28-56 and are in last place in the division 26.5 games behind Houston.

Managed by Dusty Baker, Houston arrives in town with a potent offense and a strong starting rotation. Their rotation features future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. The big righty has recovered from Tommy John surgery and has pitched extremely well this year.

His record of 10-3 and an ERA of 2.03 indicates that he will be a candidate for another Cy Young award. It is quite remarkable since Verlander is now 39 years old. Other stalwarts in the rotation are lefty Framber Valdez (8-3. 2.67 ERA), Jose Urquidy (7-3. 4.15 ERA), Luis Garcia, Christian Javier, and Jake Odorizzi. Urquidy, Valdez, and Odorizzi will pitch against the A’s this weekend.

The Astros also have a potent offense. They have five players in the lineup with ten or more home runs this year. Their biggest bopper is DH Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez is hitting a robust .313 with 25 home runs and 59 ribbies.

The Astros have an outstanding infield. Yuli Guriel will be at first base. Perennial All-Star Jose Altuve handles the second base chores, Alex Bregman holds down third base, and Jeremy Pena will be at short. Carlos Correa left Houston for Minnesota. Pena has played so well that fans in Houston are not lamenting Correa’s defection.

Houston’s hit master, Michael Brantley, is on the 10-day IL and will not play this weekend. Michael Tucker will be in right-field. Tucker has great power and has given the A’s pitching fits. Tucker is hitting. 262 with 16 homers and 57 RBIs. The Astros will use Mauricio Dubon, Chas McCormick, and Jake Meyers in the other two outfield positions.

The A’s offense has been anemic all season. The A’s have scored 266 runs for the first 84 games of the 2022 season. They have allowed 377 for a run differential of minus 111. The A’s team batting average is the worst in all of baseball.

In the game against Toronto on Wednesday, the A’s have seven hitters in the lineup, hitting below .230. Three of the seven’s average was below the Mendoza line. The A’s managed four hits in the loss to Toronto.

A’s manager Mark Kotsay has to find a way to get his players to overcome adversity and play confidently. When things are going wrong, players wonder what will go wrong today. They believe they can find ways to win when things are going well. The A’s found a way to take two out of three from a very good Toronto team. Let’s hope the A’s can do it again against the Astros.

#2 The Blue Jays Bo Bichette said that it was a needed win after losing five straight games and two of three games to the A’s.

#3 Bichette provided his own punch with a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning for the tie breaker to put the Jays on top 2-1.

#4 The A’s Ramon Laureano hit his sixth homer of the season that got the A’s the lead earlier in the game but it didn’t stand up in the later innings.

#5 The Houston Astros pay a visit to the Oakland Coliseum for a three game series which starts Friday night at 6:40 pm PDT. The Astros and A’s have not announced starting pitchers as of Wednesday night.

The Best Division in Baseball, Plus

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–For the first time this 2022 season there will be a third wild card team on each league. No division in baseball is better than the American League East, with the New York Yankees walking-away with the best record in baseball and Toronto, Tampa Bay and Boston poised for a tremendous race.

For the first time ever, a division could have three wild card teams going into the postseason and a total of four of the five teams in this division playing in October.

The American League East is the only division in baseball with four teams playing over .500. In the AL West, there is only one team to beat, Dusty Baker’s Houston Astros, they are the best team and will stay in first place.

The LA Angels are sputtering again, after a very nice start, they went into a funk lost 14 in a row, from May 25 to June 8,and Joe Maddon (one of the best managers in baseball) was sent packing.

Next managerial change could come from Seattle, where expectations were high for this team to win this year. Manager Scott Servais and General Manager Jerry DiPoto are in the hot seat. The Texas Rangers spend a fortune (close to half billion dollars) signing Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, they are both starting to play the way everybody expected, but I do not believe they have the pitching to overtake their State rivals Houston Astros.

The Oakland A’s are what they are. All the other teams have more established talent, they are trying to compete with rookie manager Mark Kotsay, a good baseball man, but the best jockey in the world cannot win the race if the horse is limping.

In the Central Division, considered the weakest in all the major leagues, supposed to be an easy one for the Chicago White Sox, but the great Tony LaRussa is not having much fun so far, star closer Liam Hendriks just placed into the IL.

The Minnesota Twins will be in the playoffs, as of today leading that division and the Cleveland Guardians are playing good baseball, leading the way at third-base, José Ramirez an early candidate for MVP. Watch out for the Indians, sorry, the Guardians, they have a good team and a terrific manager in Terry Francona.

There are some 100 games left for each team this season. While in New York they are talking about a Subway Series, Mets vs Yankees. Most recently, in 2000 the New York teams faced each other with the Yankees winning in five games, a memorable series, which I happened to worked for the Latino Baseball Network.

In other cities there is lots of disappointment. In Los Angeles, the Dodgers, whose manager, Dave Roberts predicted a 2022 World Series win during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, when he said “We will win the World Series in 2022. We will win the World Series this year.”

The Dodgers have pitching problems, ace Walker Buehler recently went into the IL, Julio Urias is not going to win 20 games again this season (he was the only to win 20 last season) plus mixed with an inconsistent offense, the Dodgers have stuff to “figure out”, they do have the talent.

The San Diego Padres, at this time, even with the delayed return of superstar Fernando Tatis Jr, looks like the team that could win this division. Bob Melvin is doing a great job, which is nothing new for the three-time Manager of the Year.

The San Francisco Giants, while they are not going to win 107 games again, they find a way to win series, starter Jacob Junis went into the IL, veterans like Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt, can’t seem to stay healthy.

Giants lost some pieces in the off-season, perhaps the biggest one, starter Kevin Gausman who had his best year ever in 2021 with a 14-6 record, and 2.81 ERA, he left for a very lucrative contract in Toronto. Nobody expected the Giants to have a similar season as 2021, which was a dream season, when every player at the same time, had great years.

Trades: The new deadline this year is set for August 2. There will be many trades, some earlier than others, but the greatest commodities are starting pitchers. they are in high demand. Many of the teams with hopes of postseason play will reinforce themselves. In today’s game the old saying “you never have enough pitching” is new again.

Happy Fathers Day weekend.

#1 The Oakland A’s have an off day on Monday. They are on their way to face the defending World Series Champion Atlanta Braves for two games starting Tuesday night in Atlanta. The A’s hope to get back on the winning track against the Braves.

#2 The Oakland Coliseum has been a house of horrors for them this season. They are 7-23 at home. They were 1-9 on the homestand ending on Sunday. They lost their last six games, three to the Houston Astros and three to the Boston Red Sox.

#3 Turning to the NBA Finals the Golden State Warriors who were down 0-1 to the visiting Boston Celtics were able to climb back into the series and even it up. It was a close first half 52-50 but the Warriors in the second half held the Celtics to just 14 points in the third quarter that made a huge difference in the win.

#4 The Boston Celtics during games 1 and 2 wanted to show unity by tee shirts supporting the release WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner who is being held in a Russian prison on drug charges when they accused Griner for having hashish oil in her suitcase at the Moscow Airport.

#5 There is no doubt and you saw him on the last homestand in Oakland that Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez who no doubt is like a reincarnated Willie McCovey type hitter who just got a six year extension worth $115 million on Monday. That’s $26 million a year and the largest contract for a DH. Alvarez is hitting .295, 51 hits, 16 home runs, and 34 RBIs.

#2 There seems little encouragement for fans to come out of late the A’s are in dead last in the AL West some 14 games out of first place, prices have doubled for tickets, parking is $30 and team president David Kaval who used to attend A’s games and encourage fans to write and talk to him has shut his open door policy.

Preview of Boston Red Sox and Oakland A’s series: A’s lost seven of last eight; Sox have lost five of last ten

The Oakland A’s Chad Pinder looks relieved scoring a run after a long scoreless and hitless drought against the Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander who lost his no hitter in the bottom of the seventh on Wed Jun 1, 2022 at Ring Central Coliseum in Oakland (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND–The Oakland A’s (20-33) have three games left on the ten day homestand. They lost the series with the Texas Rangers (24-26) three games to one. The Houston Astros (33-18) swept their three games with Oakland this week. The A’s are off on Thursday.

The A’s open a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox (24-27) starting Friday night. The A’s have been scuffling for a while. The A’s started the season winning ten of the first eighteen games. Since that time, they are 10-25.

With the good early start, many pundits thought their predictions for Oakland may have been wrong. However, the A’s are not playing well right now, and the same pundits are saying, we told you so.

The A’s hope that attendance will improve this weekend with Boston in town. Good-sized crowds would show up at the Coliseum to see the Red Sox in past years. This year attendance has been down for the Green and Gold.

Fans are upset about the possibility that the A’s may move to Las Vegas. The A’s have stated that they have two sites in mind in Sin City where they can relocate. In the meantime, a key committee will hold a vote on June 30th. An affirmative approval would buoy hopes that the 12 billion dollar Howard Terminal project can proceed.

The Red Sox got off to a slow start in 2022. They did not sign Kyle Schwarber to a contract. Schwarber wanted to stay in Boston, but their front office did not commit to him, and he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Red Sox traded Hunter Renfroe to the Milwaukee Brewers and got back Jackie Bradley, Jr. Renfro put up good power numbers for Boston. Bradley has rarely hit for average, and fans in Boston are still shaking their heads over this trade.

The Red Sox still have several hitters in their lineup that can cause severe damage. Their big hitters are Rafael Devers, J.D.Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Trevor Story, Alex Verdugo, and catcher Christian Vasquez. Devers is hitting .341 with 11 homers and 26 RBIs.

J.D.Martinez comes in with a .360 batting average. Trevor Story was hot last week, and he now has nine dingers and 37 runs batted in. Other players contributing are first baseman Bobby Dalbec, centerfielder Kike Hernandez, and backup second baseman Christian Arroyo.

The Red Sox will send Nate Eovaldi to the hill Friday night. Eovaldi was a key ingredient when the Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2018 World Series. Eovaldi is 2-2 with an ERA of 3.77. Oakland will have James Kaprielian handle the pitching for the A’s. Kaprielian is 0-2 with an ERA of 5.93.

On Saturday, Nick Pivetta will go for Boston. Pivetta is 4-4 with an ERA of 3.95. The A’s will counter with Paul Blackburn. Blackburn is 5-1 with an ERA of 2.25. Blackburn suffered his first loss of the season last Monday to the Houston Astros.

Sunday’s finale will feature lefty Rich Hill going for the Red Sox. Hill is 42-years old and was with the A’s in 2016. The A’s traded him to the Dodgers and received Frankie Montas. Montas will start for Oakland and is 2-5 with an ERA of 3.20. Montas has pitched well but has received little run support from his teammates.

The A’s and the Red Sox have been opponents since the creation of the American League way back in 1901. Both teams have won nine World Series crowns. Both teams have had down years. After the trade that sent Babe Ruth to the Yankees, the Red Sox were not very good.

Their fortunes changed when Tom Yawkey purchased them. The Red Sox went 86 years without winning a World Series. They have won four since 2004. The A’s last appeared in the World Series in 1990. They won their last World Series Championship in 1989.

The A’s have made the playoffs several times in the last 20 years. They advanced past the first round of the playoffs just once.

The A’s would like to get back on the winning track. The Red Sox would love to sweep the three-game series to reach the .500 mark. Let’s hope the fans show up. The series between these two teams have always been fun.

#2 Jerry the A’s did wake up in the bottom of the seventh with three runs scored and took a abbreviated two run lead 3-1 after Verlander left the game.

#3 Yordan Alvarez whose been a thorn in the A’s side during the series didn’t make the third game of the set an exception as Alvarez hit a three run double in the top of the ninth contributed to the Astros four run rally to come back and edge Oakland 5-4.

#4 Jerry, the Coliseum has not been nowhere near like they used to be in years past and the A’s have been having crowds well below 8,000 per game. The team has now slipped to 20-33 and are 14 games behind the Astros. That said they do lose but they are in most of their games.

Astros’ ninth-inning rally enables them to sweep three-game series; A’s can’t hold lead in 5-4 loss

Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander who pitched six plus innings of no hit baseball throws against the Oakland A’s in the first inning at Ring Central Coliseum on Wed Jun 1, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND–The Houston Astros (33-18) sent their ace, Justin Verlander, to the mound to face the Oakland A’s (20-33) on Wednesday afternoon at the Ring Central Coliseum. The Astros were hoping to sweep the three-game series from the A’s.

The A’s hoped that lefty Cole Irvin could stop the Astros and salvage a win. Both pitchers pitched well on Wednesday. In his five and 2/3 inning of work, Irvin held the hard-hitting Astros to one run and six hits. Verlander was better.

Verlander held the A’s hitless until one out in the seventh inning. The fans were starting to think Verlander would pitch his fourth career no-hitter. The A’s upset Verlander’s applecart when they scored three times to take a 3-1 lead after seven complete. It became a bullpen game.

The A’s relievers had to get the last six outs of the game. They held the fort in the eighth. Things went south in the ninth as the Astros scored four times to take a 5-3 lead. Oakland scored a run in the bottom of the ninth. The Astros won the game 5-4 and swept the three-game set from the A’s.

The Astros scored the game’s first run in the top of the third inning. With two out and Alex Bregman on first, singles by Yordan Alvarez and Aledmys Diaz gave Houston a 1-0 advantage.

Cole Irvin pitched well to keep his team within striking distance. Verlander was untouchable for six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Verlander walked Chad Pinder. Verlander struck out Seth Brown for the second out.

A’s shortstop, Elvis Andrus, swinging a hot bat, doubled to drive in Pinder with the A’s first run. The next hitter, Christian Bethancourt, took Verlander deep.

The ball went over the centerfield wall to give the A’s a 3-1 lead. For Bethancourt, it was his first home run of the season, and it was his first home run since August 12th, 2016.

In the eighth, A’s relievers A.J.Puk, and Dany Jimenez had to work out of jams to keep the Astros from scoring. Jimenez ran out of luck in the top of the ninth. Astros’ centerfielder, former San Francisco Giant Mauricio Dubon, got the rally going with a single.

Yuli Guriel, pinch-hitting for Martin Maldonado, singled to put men on at first and second with no out. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Jimenez walked Jose Altuve to load the bases. Jimenez struck out Kyle Tucker for the first out.

Jimenez walked Alex Bregman. Dubon scored, and the Astros trailed the A’s 3-2. Brad Ausmus, filling in for Mark Kotsay, who was tossed for giving his opinion to the home plate umpire, brought in lefty Sam Sellman to face left-handed hitter Yordan Alvarez.

Alvarez found a pitch to his liking, and his double to right-center cleared the bases to give the Astros a 5-3 lead. Astros’ manager Dusty Baker brought in Ryan Pressley to close out the game. The A’s scored a run and gave Baker some anxiety, but Oakland failed to tie the game and fell to Houston 5-4.

Game Notes- With the loss, the A’s are 20-33. The Astros are 33-18. The A’s are 1-6 on the homestand and are now 2-10-1 over the last thirteen series.

The line score for the A’s was four runs, four hits, and no errors. The Astros’ line was five runs, eleven hits, and one error.

The Astros’ Bryan Abreu earned the win. Pressly recorded his eleventh save of the year. Dany Jimenez took the loss and is now 2-3. Cole Irvin did not figure in the decision. Irvin’s earned run average dropped to 2.96. That may have been the A’s only bright spot.

The A’s host the Boston Red Sox for three games starting at 6:40 pm Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum starting pitcher for the Red Sox Nathan Evoaldi (2-2, 3.77) and for the A’s James Kaprielian (0-2, 5.93)

The time of the game was 3:07. 5,189 fans watched the A’s lose.
