There will be some slight changes to the Giants’ broadcasting apparatus this season with former A’s TV voice and Giants’ Fox Sports Net sideline reporter Glen Kuiper set to assist San Jose Giants Voice Joe Ritzo with fill-in play-by-play duties on KNBR, and former pitcher Shawn Estes set to rejoin the lineup of Mike Krukow’s fill-ins on the TV side for road games.

Glen—like his eldest brother, Duane—went from playing to broadcasting. Glen, the youngest of the three Kuiper brothers, got his start as a sideline reporter for Giants’ telecasts, a role he would stay in through 2003.

Glen split the A’s TV play-by-play duties with former legendary Giants’ play-by-play master, Hank Greenwald, in 2004 and 2005, and then took on the fulltime role in 2006. Glen was paired up with Duane’s former Cleveland Indians’ teammate, the late-great Ray Fosse, through 2021. Glen was then paired with former A’s pitcher, Dallas Braden for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Glen’s time with the A’s came to an abrupt end after a visit to the Negro League Museum in Kansas City, Missouri on May 5, 2023. Later that evening, during the open for the A’s telecast at their game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Glen inadvertently uttered a racial epithet when describing his experience that day.

Despite showing remorse and taking responsibility for the incident, upon realizing what he had done, the A’s fired Glen. The youngest Kuiper has since hosted ‘The Glen Kuiper Show’ on social media. He has also teamed up with Duane for Friday-night gatherings at the Gotham Club, inside the 24-for–high Willie Mays Wall in right field at Oracle Park.

In addition to being Duane’s youngest brother, Glen is also the younger brother of longtime Giants’ TV producer, Jeff Kuiper.

Estes has mainly been an analyst for Giants’ Pregame and Postgame Live on NBC Sports Bay Area. Javier Lopez and Hunter Pence have split the fill-in color commentator role for Mike Krukow while the Giants have been on the road. Lopez will dedicate more time to his new front office role with the Giants. As a result, Estes will return to the Giants’ broadcast booth.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Kuiper can’t find another broadcast job is he done?; Looking back on the Bay Bridge series

Oakland A’s broadcasters Dallas Braden (left) and Glen Kuiper (right) on the portion of the broadcast when Kuiper used an offensive racial slur which some say was a slip of the tongue on May 5, 2023 when the A’s were playing the Kansas City Royals at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City. (NBC California still photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Former Oakland A’s broadcaster who was fired last season for using the N word on live TV on NBC California is once again making news again. He still can’t get hired for another broadcasting job and Kuiper in an Chronicle interview said he does understand some of the criticism of why he shouldn’t get another broadcasting job.

#2 Kuiper has used the word twice on live TV the first time August 2020 while talking about Negro League players during the pandemic when the teams were using cardboard cutouts of fans in the stands and the infamous second time on May 5, 2023 in Kansas City after visiting the Negro League Museum. Seattle Mariners TV broadcaster Dave Sims says no sale as far as Glen Kuiper getting another broadcasting job.

#3 I know you mentioned that Glen should have been allowed to finish the 2023 season and in the off season the A’s should have made a decision on his future. The A’s said a in press release after the game that Kuiper used the N word saying that was unacceptable and they had fired him immediately. Did the A’s handle it the right way the way you see it?

#4 Turning to the last and final Bay Bridge Series which ends this weekend here in Oakland between the A’s and San Francisco Giants. Lots memories here since interleague started in 1997. Many great names over the years that played in the Bay Bridge series.

#5 Las Vegas Stadium Authority CEO Steven Hill is pretty confident that the A’s will have their financial health in order by October 17th to discuss how the A’s will pay for the Tropicana Park on the Las Vegas strip. Hill said in a meeting last Thursday that by October the A’s should come forward with their share of the construction costs and should be set to move forward to finances their share of the park.

Kansas City Royals Ryan Yarbrough gets assistance from Royals trainer after taking a line drive in the face off the bat of Oakland A’s Ryan Noda at Kaufman Stadium on Sun May 7, 2023 (photo by USA Today)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury, Kansas City Royals pitcher Ryan Yarbrough who took that shot off Oakland A’s hitter Ryan Noda’s comebacker during Sunday’s game at Kaufman Stadium. The shot hit Yarbrough in the face and laid him out. The Royals on Monday said that Yarbrough has been placed on the 15 day IL for facial fractures.

#2 The Oakland A’s opened up their three game road trip in New York with a 7-2 loss at Yankee Stadium on Monday night. The A’s pitching got clobbered in the middle innings with New York runs with two in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two more to close out the scoring in the seventh.

#3 Amaury, You knew Vida Blue for decades when he first broke into the Major Leagues and when he was a three time World Series Champion in 1972-74, an All Star, and Hall of Fame pitcher who passed on Sun May 7th at 73. Talk about Vida the pitcher but most important the person.

#4 Amaury, We didn’t get a chance to speak to you about the indefinite suspension of Oakland A’s TV play by play announcer Glen Kuiper. Kuiper suspended for using a racial slur on live TV Friday night before the A’s and Kansas City Royals game. You knew Glen since he started doing A’s TV in 1992.

#5 Turning to NBA basketball playoffs the Los Angeles Lakers go up 3-1 in game 4 defeating the Golden State Warriors for the second straight game 104-101. Stephen Curry led Golden State in scoring with 31 but it wasn’t enough. The Lakers defense shutdown the Warriors key scorers to get away with a three point win. Game 5 is at Chase Center in San Francisco on Wednesday a 7:00pm tip off.

MLB The Show podcast with Matt Harrington: Kuiper brothers will fly home for father’s funeral; Tatis will miss the rest of season with back injury; plus more

sportingnews.com photo file: San Francisco Giant broadcaster Duane Kuiper (in photo) along with brothers Giants TV producer Jeff Kuiper and Oakland A’s TV broadcaster Glenn Kuiper (not in photo) will attend their father’s funeral this weekend and will be on bereavement from their broadcasting work.

On the MLB The Show podcast with Matt:

#1 Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper, A’s broadcaster Glenn Kuiper, and Giants TV producer Jeff Kuiper will all fly to Racine, Wisconsin in preparation of the funeral for their father Henry, who passed away at age 94. Henry was a auctioneer and a farmer locally in Racine and allowed a restaurant to be built on his property. He also was involved in fast pitch baseball and would not let Duane drive the tractor on the family farm because Duane could not drive the tractor straight, leaving ziz zags embarrassing the farming community.

#2 San Diego Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. will sit out the rest of the 2019 season with a back injury. Tatis was a candidate for the 2019 Rookie of the Year award, hitting .317, 13 doubles, 22 home runs, and 53 RBIs in 84 games.

#3 The Boston Red Sox, like much of the American League, crushed the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night with a 9-1 win. Andrew Benintendi and Mitch Moreland got RBI triples and Sox pitcher Rick Porchello pitched six innings, giving up only one run in the victory. For the O’s, it was their fifth straight loss.

#4 Big win for the Minnesota Twins on Friday night with a narrow 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers. The Twins maintain a 1.5 game lead in the AL Central over the second place Cleveland Indians. The Twins’ Max Kepler and Jonathan Schoop got two-run homers in Arlington Texas.

#5 The Los Angeles Dodgers are just simply running away with it in the NL West. They picked up another victory over the Atlanta Braves 8-3 at Sun Trust Stadium. LA’s Cody Bellinger hit for home run number 41. The Dodgers’ Max Muncy and Justin Turner both hit home runs in the victory Friday night.
