The Oakland Athletics have signed left-handed pitcher Eric O’Flaherty to a two year contract through 2015. Outfielder Corey Brown was designated for assignment in order to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for O’Flaherty.
O’Flaherty pitched for the Atlanta Braves last year before experiencing a strained left elbow. He was 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA in 19 appearances before going on the disabled list. O’Flaherty had “Tommy John” surgery on the elbow and missed the remainder of the season.
O’Flaherty, who is 28, recorded a 1.45 ERA in 161 opportunities on the mound in the last three seasons. He held the opposition to a .220 batting average. He has eight seasons of major league experience split between Seattle and Atlanta.
Having undergone “Tommy John” surgery, O’Flaherty may not be available for the A’s until mid-season due to the time needed to rehabilitate the elbow and get into pitching shape.
