NHL podcast with Matt Harrington: Stars pull off win after going 0-0 in regulation; Bettman upholds Marchand suspension; plus more

On the NHL podcast with Matt Harrington:

#1 Matt, as you know there are no ties in hockey and the Dallas Stars (27-19-2) and Chicago Blackhawks (18-25-8) played to a 0-0 in regulation and then a shootout which the Stars pulled it off with the score tied 1-1 and the Stars Jacob Peterson scoring the game winner.

#2 NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman upheld the six game suspension of the Boston Bruins Brad Marchand in which he hit Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry in the jaw while Jarry was down on his knees freezing a puck and later after an official was escorting Marchand off the ice Marchand took his stick and hit Jarry in the chin with it in the Feb 8th game.

#3 Matt, talk about the Edmonton Oilers Jesse Puljujarvi who is out with an lower body injury. Puljujarvi was injured Thursday in Anaheim at Rogers Place. Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft said Puljujarvi got tangled up and it wasn’t a dirty play and not an impact injury.

#4 Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Marc-Andre Fluery says there is a lot of time between now and the March 21st trade deadline. Fluery wants to play one more year and hopes to finish up in Chicago. Matt do you see Fluery able to get his wish and finish up with the Blackhawks.

#5 The Philadelphia Flyers Claude Giroux is considering a trade and is discussing it with team general manager Chuck Fletcher. Giroux has a no trade clause in his contract. Fletcher said it’s Giroux’s decision and with the trade deadline coming Fletcher will waiting to hear from Giroux.

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The 3-0 shutout loss to the Edmonton Oilers (25-18-3) by the San Jose Sharks (22-21-4) had to be one of the more frustrating loses this season.

#2 The Sharks spent more time in their own end of the ice trying to rebound the puck and trying to protect goaltender James Reimer who faced 39 shots and allowed three.

#3 Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner faced 20 shots and stopped all of them for the shutout it was Stuarts first shutout of the season.

#4 Was this a game that it was all Oilers all the time dominating or was it a game where the Sharks offense just simply failed to execute putting the puck on net all night and keeping Skinner under pressure?

#5 The Sharks host the Vancouver Canucks (22-21-6) Thursday night at SAP Center. The Canucks have won four of their last five games. They won their last game defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs (30-12-3) in a close game 3-2 on Saturday. Mary Lisa tell us how you see Thursday night’s game between the Canucks and Sharks?

Sharks Shut Out at Home by Oilers 3-0

SAN JOSE– The Sharks resumed the season after a long break Monday, and lost to the Edmonton Oilers 3-0. Warren Foegele, Darnell Nurse and Connor McDavid scored for the Oilers and Stuart Skinner made 20 saves for the win. James Reimer made 36 saves for the Sharks.

The Sharks had not played a game since February 1. The All-Star break and the fact that the Sharks had so few games rescheduled meant that the Sharks went 12 days between games. After Monday’s game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said:

“I thought our legs were good in the first seven, eight, nine shifts of the period, you know, I thought had a little adrenaline. But as the game went on I think that you could see there wasn’t a lot of sharpness to our game. And that’s the worry after being on a break that long. But you’ve got to find ways at this time of year, and there’s no excuses. Those are big points we let go.”

Discussing the team’s offensive woes, Boughner said: “We just couldn’t generate any offense tonight. We looked like the more we tried the worse we got. You saw me trying to juggle lines, trying to get something going, nothing worked.”

The first period saw two quick goals from Edmonton. The first came at 6:05 from Warren Foegele. Evan Bouchard’s shot from the point went off of Derek Ryan and then Foegele before getting by Reimer.

The second goal came at 7:10 on a point shot through traffic from Darnell Nurse. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got the assist.

The Oilers took two penalties in the period, one before they scored and one after. The Sharks power play had three shots and gave up one short-handed. The overall shot count for the period was very close, 11-10 Oilers.

In the second period, the numbers were much less close. Though the Oilers did not score in the second, they out-shot the Sharks 14-2. On paper, the Sharks took three penalties and the Oilers took two, but most of those overlapped to create abbreviated power plays and a five-on-three for the Oilers. The Oilers power play ended up with seven shots and the Sharks had none.

Connor McDavid scored to make it 3-0 at 1:50 of the third period. The Sharks seemd to have escaped an onslaught from the Oilers offense but just when thought they could get out of the zone, McDavid was on his way back in. He evaded Brent Burns and took a quick shot that went by Reimer on the blocker side. Evan Bouchard got the assist.

The only penalty in the third period went against the Oilers. The Sharks power play managed two shots. The count for the period was 16-8 Oilers. In the face-off circle, the Oilers had a small edge with 52% of the wins.

At the end of the second period, Rudolfs Balcers was injured blocking a puck and did not return to the game. There were no updates on his status immediately after the game.

In his first game against the Sharks as an Oiler, Evander Kane had 4 shots, one hit, no penalties and no points.

The Sharks next play on Thursday at home against the Vancouver Canucks at 7:30 PM PT.

#1 Matt, on Tue 8th the Boston Bruins Brad Marchand who has had previous suspensions and fines for misconduct. On Tuesday Marchand sucker punched Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry in the jaw while the goaltender was on his knees after freezing the puck. After the linesman grabbed hold of Marchand while skating him off the ice they got in front of the net where Marchand raised his stick and caught Jarry in the chin area well after play had ended.

#2 Seeing how the play went is Marchand’s six game suspension a light penalty considering it was a double match penalty or is a roughing, misconduct and double match penalty a six game suspension according to the CBA?

#3 The New York Rangers Kappo Kakko will be out at least one more month with an upper body injury. Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant says that Kakko is day to day. Kakko felt discomfort while skating in warm ups back on Jan 22nd against the Arizona Coyotes. Kakko has 33 goals and is tied with the Edmonton Oilers Leon Draisaittl, Edmonton Oilers for the NHL lead.

#4 Evgeni Malkin whose been out for Covid 19 protocols has missed two games on Tuesday and Thursday. Malkin skated with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday and will be a game time decision on Sunday according to head coach Mike Sullivan.

#5 The Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron will is listed day to day due to an upper body injury and won’t be able to play tonight against the Ottawa Senators. Bergeron had a collision with the Penguins Sid Crosby at 8:44 during the third period Tuesday in a 4-2 loss.

#1 The Sharks defense saw the return of both Mario Ferraro and Jake Middleton. Ferraro, wearing a full face shield, skated 27:21 minutes. He had one shot, five blocked shots, and two hits. 

#2 Jacob Middleton skated 15:33 and had four hits. Of Ferarro’s return, teammate Brent Burns said: “To step back in and battle through, that’s Mario, he’s just been… he’s that kind of guy all year. That’s the stuff that… it’s huge for teams.”

#3 A scoreless first period saw each team’s power play go to work, with the penalty kills prevailing. Each power play finished with two shots on goal. The Lightning outshot the Sharks slightly, 9-7. 

#4 The Lightning’s Victor Hedman scored the game winner 41 seconds later with a shot from the slot through traffic as the Lightning edge the Sharks 3-2 in overtime.

#5 The loss was San Jose third straight and they face off against Evander Kane and the Edmonton Oilers on Mon Feb 14th at SAP Center in San Jose the Oilers have won four of their last six games. Mary do you see the Sharks having bad blood against their old teammate Evander Kane on the 14th when the Oilers come calling?

#1 Matt, with Evander Kane signing on with the Edmonton Oilers this week it didn’t take long for someone in the Canadian media to take a shot at him. TSN radio’s Jeff O’Neill said on TSN 1050 that Kane should repair his relationship with his daughter. Kane responded wishing O’Neill played in the NHL and asking what does O’Neill know about his relationship with his daughter?

#2 The Seattle Kraken ran into some rough weather their game against the New York Islanders has been postponed due to emergency winter storm warnings and rescheduled for Wed Feb 2 at UBS Arena in Elmont. The Kraken are scheduled for a match with the New York Rangers for Sun Jan 30th Matt any word if they’ll play that game?

#3 Matt, talk about the Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon who was hit by the Boston Bruins Taylor Hall during Wednesday’s game in the first period at 2:22 the hit put MacKinnon face down on the ice and he was listed with a concussion and facial fracture.

#4 The New York Rangers Adam Fox will not play in the All Star game due to an upper body injury he will miss three games on Fri vs. Minnesota, Sun vs. Seattle, and Tue vs. Florida. Fox got pinned against the boards by the Columbus Blue Jackets Vladislav Gavrikov in the third period of Thursday’s game.

#5 NHL All Star game will be played on Sat Feb 5th at the T Mobile Center in Las Vegas. This will mark the first time in Vegas Golden Knights history that the Knights organization will host the mid-winter classic. The All Star game skills contest will be on Fri Feb 4th to start things off.

#2 TSN 1050 Toronto talk show host Jeff O’Neill said that Kane should fix his relationship with his daughter, O’Neill on the air called Kane an idiot, jerk and a goof. Kane responded by saying that he wished that O’Neill played in the NHL right now and he didn’t know anything about his relationship between Kane and his daughter.

#3 Kane said during Friday’s press conference at the Rogers Centre in Edmonton for fans, teammates, and the Oilers front office to be patient and “see what I bring to the table”

#4 The San Jose Sharks (22-19-2) who surprised the Washington Capitals (23-12-9) on Thursday night with a 4-1 win the Sharks face off against a very good Florida Panthers (30-9-5) team at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise this afternoon talk a little about today’s contest?

#5 The Sharks and Carolina Hurricanes (29-9-2) share something in common they both will be playing back to back games this Saturday and Sunday the Sharks coming from Florida tonight and the Hurricanes play the New Jersey Devils tonight. The Sharks and Hurricanes face off at 2:00 pm PST at PNC Arena Sunday.

#1 The Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin who has won the MVP three times is up for the Hart Trophy so far with 24 goals, 50 points, and has helped the Capitals to get to first place in the Metropolitan Division.

#2 The Boston Bruins Trent Fredric hit the Minnesota Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov hitting him into the boards and Kaprizov’s skates got caught up with his teammate Matt Grzelcyk receiving an upper body injury at 10:09 of the second period in the 3-2 Wild win on Thursday night. Kaprizov will not play against the Washington Capitals tonight.

#3 The St Louis Blues dropped their odds a bit losing right winger Vladimir Tarasenko, defensemen Scott Perunovich, and Jake Walman to Coronavirus protocols. Each will miss two games after testing positive for Coronavirus.

#4 The Vegas Golden Knights know how to spoil a reunion as they defeated the New York Rangers 5-1 in the return of former Knights head coach Gerrard Gallant. Gallant was the Knights first coach in their franchise history before being replace by Peter DeBoer on Jan 15, 2020.

#5 Three games were canceled in Canadian cities due to attendance restrictions New Jersey had two games postponed @ Montreal Jan 15 and at Toronto Jan 17th. The Chicago Blackhawks at Edmonton Oilers were postponed for Jan 18. The Ottawa Senators had three games postponed.

#6 The San Jose Sharks gave Evander Kane his unconditional release today because of a fake Covid 19 card and he will no longer be skating for the Sharks minor league team the San Jose Barracuda. Kane has ability but because of off ice issues is no longer with San Jose.

#1 Not since the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic in March 2020 has the NHL seen so many games postponed. The NHL has postponed two more teams all games for the Colorado Avalanche (17-8-2) and Florida Panthers (18-7-4).

#2 The Calgary Flames (15-7-6) have shutdown their operations extending it from Dec 24-26. The Flames announced that they have had no further positive tests today. The Flames next scheduled game is against the Edmonton Oilers (17-11-0) on Dec 27th.

#3 Winnipeg Jets (13-11-5) head coach Paul Maurice resigned on Friday saying the team needs a new voice. That new voice was found when Jet’s general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff called new interim head coach Dave Lowry to take over on Thursday. Lowry is the father of Jets forward Adam Lowry.

#4 The Vegas Golden Knights (19-11-0) Jonathan Marchessault got the game winner in round three of a shootout against the New York Rangers (19-7-4) at Madison Square Garden for a 3-2 win. The win was the Knights third straight win.

#5 The St Louis Blues (17-8-5) picked up a home and home sweep against the Dallas Stars (13-12-2) 4-1 on Friday night in St Louis. The Blues Vladimir Tarasenko scored two goals and goaltender Charlie Lindgren stopped 26 shots.

#1 Matt, the Ottawa Senators returned to practice on Friday after having ten players on the Covid 19 protocol list. The Senators had three games postponed because of the positive tests and have not played since Sun Nov 14 and are expected to return to action Mon Nov 22 in Colorado.

#2 The Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty who got a knee to knee injury with Dallas Star defenseman Jani Hakanpaa on Oct 22 in a 3-2 overtime loss. Doughty was given eight weeks to recover and in his fourth week is just now skating with the club. Doughty is second in points with seven and six assists.

#3 The Anaheim Ducks left winger Max Comtois will be out at least six weeks due to hand surgery. Comtois had a small bone removed and missed the last three games and is on the Ducks injured reserve list. Comtois has just one assist in 13 games.

#4 The San Jose Sharks forward Kevin Lebanc has been suspended for one game for slew footing the St Louis Blues forward Tyler Bozak on Thu Nov 18th’s game in St Louis at 8:57 of the first period. When will Labanc start the suspension and could you talk about the play?

#5 Matt, talk about the Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid’s response regarding ESPN’s John Tortorella’s saying that McDavid needs to shut up about not getting penalties called, for McDavid not to talk about it and that he needs to change his game a bit. McDavid said he guessed he’d better shut up.
