Tuesday night the Stanford Cardinal (2-1) took on the Santa Clara Broncos (3-0) in a battle of the unbeaten. Stanford led by slight margins for most of the game. They had led by as much as 12 points in the first half but it was the Broncos who pushed the pace eventually winning the game 89-77.

Tuesday night the Cardinal took on the Broncos at Maples Pavilion. Stanford is coming off a win Friday night against the (0-3) Sacramento Hornets 91-73. The Broncos are also coming off a win over St. Francis PA last Saturday 82-59.

In that game Carlos Marshall Jr. had the high score for Santa Clara with 25 points. Stanford kept an eye on Marshall. The Cardinal have a solid roster in Brandon Angel, Spencer Jones, Maxime Raynaud and Andre Stojakovic.

Stanford was highly favored. Angel had the high score in their last game against Sacramento finishing with 18 points with Jones, Raynaud and Stojakovic all scoring in double digits. Raynaud finished the game with seven rebounds. Both teams came into this game unbeaten. The Broncos came away with their record perfect and the Cardinal take their first loss.

Stanford hit the court starting this game with a shot from downtown from Stojakovic taking an early 3-0 lead. After taking a 28-16 lead at 12:08 the Cardinal let it all slip away and at 7:29 in the first half they were leading by a basket 30-28.

The Broncos took the lead once in the first half by a single point but Stanford hung onto the lead for the rest of the half. Santa Clara refused to go away threatening throughout the final seven minutes of play in the opening half. Stanford led at the half 46-44. Maxime Raynaud had the high for Stanford with 17 points.

The Broncos took the lead a couple of times in the second half but Stanford took the lead back every time but just could not establish a consistent rhythm and dictate the pace of this game. At 11:45 Santa Clara’s Adama Bal hit a shot from downtown and the Broncos went on to take a 62-57 lead.

This time it was the Broncos that threatened the pace of this game. This time it was Santa Clara that was holding small leads and extending their lead to 83-75 with less than a minute left in the game.

The Cardinal will next take on Eastern Wa again at Maples Friday night with tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Bears clawed and battle but came up two points short

The Cal Bears guard Joel Brown drives against Eastern Washington at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Wed Dec 7, 2022 (Cal Bears photo)

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael:

#1 The Cal Bears (0-9) received bad news before Wednesday’s contest against Eastern Washington when they announced that leading scorer Devin Askew and freshman ND Okafor would be unavailable due to health and safety protocols.

#2 Then the Bears coughed up 17 turnovers and never led in a 50-48 loss to the Eagles of the Big Sky Conference, a team they had beaten in all three, previous meetings.

#3 The Bears trailed 45-36 with 5:22 remaining only to rally and tie the contest at 48 with 33 seconds left on Joel Brown’s made free throw. But Tyreese Davis’ layup on EWU’s next possession gave the visitors their winning margin.

#4 In the final seconds, Kuany Kuany missed a three-pointer that would have given the Bears a lead. Sam Alajiki’s foul put EWU’s Casey Jones on the foul line, but he missed both attempts. Brown’s desperation 3-point attempt then fell short at the final buzzer as Cal loses by two points 50-48.

#5 Cal hosts the Butler Bulldogs (8-2) on Saturday afternoon at 2pm at Haas Pavilion how tough will that one be for the Bears as they seek their first win of the season?

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Joey Friedman: After loss to Kansas, Stanford looks to recover against Washington Eastern

On the Stanford basketball podcast with Joey:

#1 Last Saturday, going to Kansas (8-0), you had to get that feeling the Stanford Cardinal (4-4) had their work cut out for them.

#2 The Jayhawks’ LaGerald Vick, one of the big threats, hit a three-pointer with just a second left in the game, Vick had eight of 27 points for the Hawks to lead them to a 90-84 win and the Hawks kept their perfect record in tact.

#3 For the Cardinal, KZ Okpala had 22 points and eight rebounds, Daejon Davis had 19 points and eight boards and Isaac White had 15 points and five threes.

#4 While the Jayhawks are still undefeated, they did make mistakes during their win over the Cardinal and just got away with a six-point win.

#5 The Cardinal have the home floor Saturday night against the Eastern Washington Eagles (1-7). The Eagles will be coming off a game against the USF Dons on Thursday night. The Cardinal could very well have this game in hand.
