The Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting was won today by Joe Buck, of ESPN Sports, who calls Major League games for the sports network. He joins his father, Jack Buck, who won the award in 1987and who was the beloved “Voice of the St. Louis Cardinals” for nearly 50 years.

I have listened to Joe Buck on ESPN baseball but never met him. I did know his father, Jack. In 1999, during a special ceremony at Candlestick Park, last year the Giants played there. Yours truly and Lon Simmons were co-masters of ceremonies for the No. 30 uniform retirement of Giants great Orlando Cepeda.

Mr. Jack Buck also addressed the crowd during the ceremony. He was a St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster; the Cardinals were in town, and Orlando Cepeda also played for St. Louis. Mr. Buck asked me if he should address the crowd in English or Spanish; he spoke conversational Spanish, but he chose to do it in English.

Mr. Buck, the father, was a much more seasoned broadcaster than his son, Joe, and, in my opinion, a better play-by-play man. Congratulations go out today to his son, Joe Buck for winning this prestigious award.

Joe Buck, son of Jack Buck, today became the first father-son duo of baseball announcers to win the Ford C. Frick Award. National broadcasters are heard across the country and therefore carry more weight when it comes to voting for this award.

For example, Jon Miller, who won this award in 2010, was not only known and heard locally as the Voice of the San Francisco Giants, but was paired with Joe Morgan on ESPN nationwide telecasts in games across the country.

I was rooting for my good friend and pioneer René Cardenas, the first to broadcast for an MLB club in Spanish in 1958 with the Dodgers, before Jaime Jarrin (who won in 1998), to win it this season. I spoke via telephone with Rene today, he told me he understands, but told me he feels he is “totally forgotten”. Cardenas is 95 years young.

Congratulations to Duane Kuiper of the Giants, who was also nominated for this award, which yours truly was proud to be nominated for in 2004.

ESPN pays Major League Baseball over half a billion dollars annually under a deal covering the 2026-2028 season, which includes the MLB TV streaming service.

Amaury Pi-Gonzalez – Cuban-born Pi-González is one of the pioneers of Spanish-language baseball play-by-play in America. Began as Oakland A’s Spanish-language voice in 1977 ending in 2024 (interrupted by stops with the Giants, Mariners and Angels). Voice of the Golden State Warriors from 1992 through 1998. 2010 inducted in the Bay Area Radio Hall of fame.

#1 Michael, the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes continue to with the latest sources saying that the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers are top contenders for the two way player. Can you see either of these two teams in bidding war for Ohtani?

#2 Michael, some critics can’t see the San Francisco Giants signing Ohtani because of the above teams are pretty much at the top of the list for Ohtani. Where do you the Giants chances in signing Ohtani?

#3 Michael, it was reported in a the next day or two Alameda County Councilperson Donna Ziegler per vice president David Haubert of the five person Alameda County board will be reaching out to Oakland A’s owner John Fisher that he owes the county $45 million part of his $85 million purchase of the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum site. The deadline was for 2026 but a stipulation was made if the A’s made an announcement that they’re leaving Oakland the payment would be due 180 days after the team made that announcement which was made on April 19th. The A’s could say they did not make any announcement of leaving Oakland. How do you see this being worked out?

#4 Michael, longtime Boston Red Sox play by play announcer Joe Castiglione was voted into the Major League Baseball Ford C Frick wing of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Castiglione has called Sox games for the last 41 years beat out three Bay Area broadcasters San Francisco Giants TV announcers Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow and Oakland A’s radio play by play announcer Ken Korach.

#5 Michael, Giants manger Bob Melvin said that he’s happy that coach Alyssa Nakken will remain on the coaching staff in San Franicsco. Melvin said that her becoming the first woman in MLB history to coach first base was “really cool she broke ground like that.” You’ve had several conversations with Alyssa tell us your thoughts of her breaking ground and returning to coaching with Melvin at the helm.

Kuiper to begin Chemotherapy immediately

SAN FRANCISCO–San Francisco Giant broadcaster Duane Kuiper in a statement announced that he will immediately begin Chemotherapy treatment. Kuiper said he will be missing a few games but eventually plans to return later this season after receiving treatment.

Kuiper said he had taken some tests and doctors said he needed to start chemotherapy treatment and said he was confident that he has a talented medical team of doctors and healthcare professionals. Kuiper expressed his appreciation of those around him his family, fans, those close to the Giants, NBC Sports Bay Area, and everyone working at KNBR 680 the Giants flagship station.

Kuiper said while he will be taking a few games off is confident that he will be back to work broadcasting at some point this season. Kuiper’s statement to the media and fans is below:

“I wanted to let you know that I may be missing a few more Giants broadcasts than usual and I wanted to share what’s going on with me,” Kuiper said. “After some tests and visits with doctors, I was diagnosed with a medical condition that requires me to immediately begin chemotherapy treatment. I feel very fortunate that I have an incredibly talented team of doctors and healthcare specialists who will be assisting me throughout my treatment plan.

“And, of course, the support and love of my entire family, along with our incredible fans, everyone at the Giants, NBC Sports Bay Area and KNBR is overwhelming and deeply appreciated. I still plan on broadcasting this season, though I may take a few more games off if I’m not feeling well and I want to thank my broadcast partners for their unconditional support and willingness to step in and cover for me. Thank you for your prayers and for giving me the space and privacy to focus on my health at this time. While this was not the adventure I anticipated, I’m staying positive for a quick and full recovery.”

#1 Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper, A’s broadcaster Glenn Kuiper, and Giants TV producer Jeff Kuiper will all fly to Racine, Wisconsin in preparation of the funeral for their father Henry, who passed away at age 94. Henry was a auctioneer and a farmer locally in Racine and allowed a restaurant to be built on his property. He also was involved in fast pitch baseball and would not let Duane drive the tractor on the family farm because Duane could not drive the tractor straight, leaving ziz zags embarrassing the farming community.

#2 San Diego Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. will sit out the rest of the 2019 season with a back injury. Tatis was a candidate for the 2019 Rookie of the Year award, hitting .317, 13 doubles, 22 home runs, and 53 RBIs in 84 games.

#3 The Boston Red Sox, like much of the American League, crushed the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night with a 9-1 win. Andrew Benintendi and Mitch Moreland got RBI triples and Sox pitcher Rick Porchello pitched six innings, giving up only one run in the victory. For the O’s, it was their fifth straight loss.

#4 Big win for the Minnesota Twins on Friday night with a narrow 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers. The Twins maintain a 1.5 game lead in the AL Central over the second place Cleveland Indians. The Twins’ Max Kepler and Jonathan Schoop got two-run homers in Arlington Texas.

#5 The Los Angeles Dodgers are just simply running away with it in the NL West. They picked up another victory over the Atlanta Braves 8-3 at Sun Trust Stadium. LA’s Cody Bellinger hit for home run number 41. The Dodgers’ Max Muncy and Justin Turner both hit home runs in the victory Friday night.
