On the SF Giants podcast with Michael;

#1 The Detroit Tigers (29-45) and San Francisco (40-34) ended up splitting a two game series at Oracle Park as the Giants took the first game on Tuesday night 4-3 but on Wednesday the Tigers got some decent pitching and home run help from Eric Haase who hit a two run home run to break a 1-1 sixth inning deadlock the Tigers would win it 3-2.

#2 The Tigers Miguel Cabrera got an RBI hit and the Tigers improved getting their 11th win against 23 loses on the road so far this season

#3 Tiger starting pitcher Rony Garcia picked up his second win against three loses. Garcia allowed one run on one hit, struck out five batters. The Tigers reliever Gregory Soto got the Giants out in order in the bottom of the ninth inning to close the door. Garcia got the win and improved his record to 3-2.

#4 The Giants Evan Longoria has been seeing the ball well he slugged his eighth home run of the season but the Giants just couldn’t capitalize on Tigers pitching and couldn’t reach home after the Longoria’s home run.

#5 The Chicago White Sox and Giants open a three game series at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Friday. Starting pitchers for the White Sox right hand pitcher Lance Lynn (1-1, 6.19) and going for the Giants right hand pitcher Alex Cobb (3-3, 3.48) first pitch 7:15 pm PDT.

SAN FRANCISCO–Clichés are the damnedest things. The word comes from a 19th century French printing technique that worked like a sort of mechanical stamp pad, along the lines of the Address-o-Graph, in which dog tags were pressed into an ink pad and then against envelopes. That’s how mass mailings were addressed before the advent of computers.

This etymology has given the cliché a bad reputation, only partially deserved. Clichés can be boring, lifeless, repetitious. They also can be precise and illuminating. But not always.

Take that old baseball cliché, the June swoon. It would be comforting-providing cold comfort, but comfort nonetheless, if we could believe that the San Francisco Giants (40-33) were suffering a June swoon, but they’re not.

They entered the month at 27-23, .540, 6-1/2 games behind the division leading Dodgers. They came to play today at 39-33, 5.42. Their opponents, the Detroit Tigers (28-45), left May at 21-30, .412, eight games behind the Minnesota Twins in the American League Central Race.

They slipped to 28-44, .389 at game time, still trailing the Twinkees, but now by 12 games. These teams have been swooning a long time.

One Giant came to the park this evening on the heels of a great month. Carlos Rodón’s combination of four seamers, sliders, curves, and changeups had earned him a record of 2-1, 1.20, with an opponents’ BA of .159 since May Day.

Overall, he was 6-4, 2.70 for the season. He exited the game after hurling six excellent innings and surrendering a lone run, which was earned, on seven hits and no walks, although he did throw a wild pitch.

He notched four punch outs and made 86 deliveries, 56 of which were counted as strikes, lowering his ERA to 2,62. He was rewarded with the win, bringing his W-L numbers to 7-4.

Rodón’s opposite number for the Detroiters, Tarik Skubal, Rodón’s opposite number, hadn’t been as successful.. The Tiger lefty did have a June swoon, going 2-3, 5.91 in the past 25 days, making him 5-5, 3.63 for the year.

He had to work hard tonight, and although his activity wasn’t particularly efficient, it was adequate. It took him 108 pitches, of which 42 were balls to complete his 4-2/3 innings on the mound.

He allowed three runs, all earned, but one of them came after he had left the game, which he did after yielding four hits and four walks against five strikeouts. He would take the loss to make him 5-6 and raise his ERA to 3.75.

The home team jumped out to an early lead. Austin Slater got caught looking at a third strike to start the bottom of the first. Then Wilmer Flores waited out a full count walk and motored to third on Joc Pederson’s opposite field down the line double against the shift.

The runners held their bases when Darin Ruf grounded out to second baseman Jonathan Schoop playing in the shift to the left of the sack, but they both scored on Evan Longoria’s single to center, giving San Francisco a 2-0 advantage.

San Francisco put another deuce on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With two down, Skubal walked Darin Ruf. That brought Evan Longoria to the plate and Wily Peralta out of the bullpen. The Giants’ third baseman hit a little number in front of the plate and beat Peralta’s throw to first, putting runners on first and second.

They were on second and third after the Detroit reliever uncorked a wild pitch with Yastrzemski at the plate. Yaz followed with a single to right that brought in both runners. One run was charged against each pitcher, and the frame ended with a 4-0 lead for the home team.

Detroit finally put a run on the board in the top of the sixth. With one out, Robbie Grossman smacked Rodón’s favorite pitch, the four seamer into deep right field for a double and went to third on a wild pitch to Miguel Cabrera, who singled to left for his 24th RBI of the season, which gave him 1,828 so far in his 19+ year career. It kept the Bengals in the game, 4-1.

John Brebbia took over SF’s pitching duties in the top of the seventh, and Detroit took advantage of Rodón’s departure. Willi Castro led off with a double to deep right center, and Jeimer Candelario doubled down with an automatic two bagger to straight away center that halved the Giant’s lead to 4-2 before Brebbia recovered and retired the next three batters.

Andrew Chafin replaced Peralta in the home half of the frame and allowed nothing more harmful than a walk to Flores and fly out to the left field warning track by Longoria.

Dominic Leone, coming in to pitch the eighth, retired his first two batters, with a little help from an acrobatic catch by Yaz of Cabrera’s liner to right for the second out. Right after that, he walked Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.

Willi Castro sliced a single to left, scoring Greene with Detroit’s third tally and moving Torkelson to second. Leone and Candelario battled to a full count, and then the bases were loaded as Candelario managed to check his swing on a cutter that missed the plate.

Enter Camilo Doval. He got two quick strikes on Schoop, who then fouled off a cut fastball and took another for a 1-2 count. He swung at a slider and missed.

Joe Jiménez, coming into the game for Detroit in the bottom of the eighth, retired the side in order, keeping the Giant’s slim margen a mere one run at 4-3.

Doval returned to the hill for the ninth, looking for his 12th save in 14 opportunities. He struck out Eric Haase, who had entered the game as catcher in the bottom of the seventh.

Doval then walked the veteran Robbie Grossman on four pitches, bringing up the veteran Javier Báez, who grounded into a 6-4-3 game ending double play. Or was it? Detroit appealed the call at first. But it was upheld, and San Francisco had won a thriller.

The two fairly evenly matched orange and black teams will go at it again tomorrow at 12:45 with Detroit sending Rony García (2-2, 4.57) against San Francisco’s Alex Wood (5-6, 5.05) to conclude this two game series at Oracle Park.

On the Giants podcast with Marko Ukalovic:

#1 Marko it was just too much Cincinnati Reds (25-47) on Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park where the San Francisco Giants (39-33) go lit up 10-3 thanks to a seven run rally by the Reds that pretty much put it away.

#2 Giant starter Anthony DeSclafani was touched up in just 2.2 innings of work, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs to say he was struggling was an understatement.

#3 The Reds Nick Senzel said everybody in the line up was contributing and when that happens the Reds could be a dangerous club. Senzel wound up with three singles in the ball game.

#4 Reds pitcher Terrry Mahle did his part on holding the Giants back in his starting role with 6.2 innings of work, four hits, three earned runs, just one walk and seven strikeouts.

#5 The Giants have Monday off and open up a brief two game series against the Detroit Tigers (28-44) on Tuesday and Wednesday. For Tuesday the Tigers will be sending Tarik Skubal (5-5, 5.63) against the Giants Carlos Rodon (6-4, 2.70) a 6:40 pm PDT first pitch at Oracle Park.

Oakland’s Bats Come Alive to Beat Tigers 9-0

By Barbara Mason

The Oakland A’s (13-19) put on a stunning offensive show Wednesday night at Comerica stadium to beat the Detroit Tigers (9-22) 9-0. Oakland’s bats came to life scoring in the first three innings.

Chad Pinder, Christian Bethancourt, Elvis Andrus, Sheldon Neuse and Ramon Laureano all crossed home plate in the first three innings. Bethancourt actually had two runs giving Oakland a 6-0 lead after just three innings.

The A’s would add another run in the 5th inning when Bethancourt singled and Laureano scored extending their lead 7-0.

Through six innings the A’s had ten hits. Zach Logue was having an amazing game on the mound for Oakland working on a shutout. The Tigers starting pitcher Joey Wentz lasted 2.2 innings.

Detroit would send in three relief pitchers, Wily Peralta, Alex Lange and Jacob Barnes in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Gregory Soto was the closer for the Tigers.

Sam Moll would relieve Logue in the eighth inning. He had a three up three down inning. Justin Grimm would close for the A’s for the win.

Ramon Laureano hit a double in the ninth inning driving in Neuse and Oakland was looking at a 8-0 lead. Murphy would score on a ground out by Bethancourt giving Oakland 9-0 lead which was the final.

Every Oakland player had an RBI, a hit or a run in this game. It was an amazing game for the A’s offensively and defensively. They scored in five innings with Christian Bethancourt the leader with three hits. Logue had seven great shut out innings, no walks and six strike outs.

The A’s will be back at it bright and early tomorrow in the final game of this series. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 AM.

A’s split doubleheader with Detroit; Tigers win front game 6-0 and A’s win night cap 4-1

A’s Split Double Header With Detroit

By Barbara Mason

Tuesday afternoon the Oakland A’s (12-19) took on the Detroit Tigers (9-21) in a double header. In game one the A’s were the home team. Frankie Montas was on the mound for Oakland. He went 6.1 innings and allowed 6 hits and 4 runs.

The Tigers Tarik Skubal had a solid game going seven innings. He gave up three hits and had five strikeouts.

Detroit was able to put points on the scoreboard in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings leading 6-0 after eight innings. In the fifth inning Schoop scored off a Derek Hill sacrifice. Willi Castro also scored in the fifth giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Detroit extended their lead in the sixth inning when Jonathan Schoop homered to left for a 3-0 score.

The Tigers were not done. The seventh inning was huge for the team. Jeimer Candelairio hit a double allowing Javier Baez, Robbie Grossman and Austin Meadows to score. The 6-0 lead for Detroit would be the final.

The Tigers had ten hits to the A’s three hits. The A’s bats continued to struggle.

There was a horrendous infield collision between Elvis Andrus and Chad Pinder in the fifth inning. They were both giving chase and colliding.

Pinder was on the ground for several minutes before getting up. Both players were checked out by trainers and stayed in the game. Out of an abundance of caution neither player would play in the second game. The fact that both of them appeared to be ok was good news for Oakland.

There would be a brief rest period after game one before going into the second game of the double header.

Game 2 recap: The A’s would send rookie pitcher Adrian Martinez to the mound in his MLB debut. He would be the eighth player on the A’s to make their major league debut this year. Alex Faedo would be on the mound for the Tigers in game two.

The A’s would take advantage of a throwing error by Tiger catcher Eric Haase in the fourth inning. Sheldon Neuse on first was able to reach third base on this error. Jed Lowrie hit a sacrifice fly and Neuse would score for a 1-0 lead.

The A’s got a rally going in the fourth inning. Sean Murphy was on third and a Kevin Smith single brought him home for a 2-0 lead. There were three hits in the fourth inning for Oakland. Oakland stranded Laureano and Smith in that inning.

In the night cap it was all A’s. Kevin Smith would score in the seventh inning when Pache singled. They would add another run in the ninth inning. Ramon Laureano would have his first score since coming back. Going into the bottom of the ninth Oakland had a 4-0 lead.

Lou Trivino would get out of a sticky situation when the Tigers loaded the bases in the ninth inning. The Tigers would avoid the shutout when Cabrera scored but that would be it for Detroit. Oakland won the second game 4-1.

While Oakland was hoping for a sweep in these two games they did split. The A’s had eight hits in this game. There were no homer runs for the A’s but getting those bats going again was a very good thing. It was a great start for Martinez going 5.1 innings allowing 4 hits.

Wednesday’s game in Detroit will start at 4:10 PM. Zach Logue (1-1 ERA 2.84) will start for the A’s and for the Tigers Joey Wentz (0-0 ERA 0.00) will take the mound. This will be Logue’s second start this season. First pitch is slated for 4:10 pm PDT at Comerica Park.

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary:

#1 Texas Rangers manager Chris Woodward called Yankee Stadium a Little League Park after Sunday’s front end of a doubleheader when the Yankees Gleyber Torres hit a walk off home run. Woodward got an avalanche of heat for calling one of baseball’s cathederals a Little League Park.

#2 How much was it based on frustration for Woodward on losing to the Yankees on Sunday as Yankee Stadium does have a short porch. You could be assured Woodward heard it from Yankee fans on Monday.

#3 Scary moment as home plate umpire Ron Kulpa was hit in the mask by Chicago White Sox third baseman Jake Burger by a foul ball on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Burger was checked by trainers after falling at the plate walked off the field under his own power and was replaced by Marty Foster.

#4 New York Mets coach Eric Chavez said that balls are being juiced to get out more there is no secret that all big league clubs are using humidors but on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN prime time games Chavez said that he first didn’t believe it when players came to him about it but watched and said the ball was traveling further on the eye test but it also lined up with what the analytics were telling them.

#5 Amaury the last three games in Minnesota against the Minnesota Twins the Oakland A’s lost by some low scoring games but they can’t seem to break out the bats and get the run production that manager Mark Kotsay would hope. Luckily the Detroit Tigers are a struggling bunch and the A’s got a couple runs to get by them on Monday night to end their nine game losing streak at Comerica Park 2-0.

A’s beat Tigers to break nine game losing streak 2-0 opens 5 game series in Detroit

Oakland A’s starter Paul Blackburn prepares to deliver against the Detroit Tigers in the first inning of action at Comerica Park in Detroit on Mon May 9, 2022 (AP News photo)

A’s Beat Tigers To Break Losing Streak 2-0

By Barbara Mason

Oakland A’s lead off hitter Tony Kemp connected for a homer in the third inning helping the Oakland A’s (11-18) break their nine game losing streak beating the Detroit Tigers (8-20) 2-0.

The homer in the third inning was a solo shot for Kemp giving the A’s a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning Sean Murphy had a double and would advance to third when Seth Brown flied out. A single by Chad Pinder drove Murphy home and Oakland would take a 2-0 lead. They would take that lead into the ninth inning looking to break their long losing streak.

Starting pitcher for Oakland Paul Blackburn had a great outing going 6 2/3 innings. He was relieved by Zach Jackson for 1.1 innings. Dany Jimenez would be the closer for Oakland.

Michael Pineda was the losing pitcher for Detroit. The Tigers have now lost five games in a row.

In the ninth inning not only Javier Baez would be tossed from the game but also manager A.J. Hinch. Baez did not agree with the strike out call and things got really heated leading to the ejection.

Things got very tense in the ninth inning when Jimenez put two on base with two outs. Robbie Grossman hit a single, stole second and then Jiminez would walk Austin Meadows. The Oakland closer would pull it together and close out the game striking out Jonathan Schoop for the win.

Tuesday the A’s will play the Tigers in a doubleheader. Oakland will be the home team in the first of the two games. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 am PDT at Comerica Park. Starting pitchers for the front game, for the “visiting” Tigers Tarik Skubal (1-2 ERA 3.04) and for the A’s Frankie Montas (2-2 ERA 3.44) and in the night cap the A’s have not announced a starter and for the Tigers right hander Alex Faedo (0-0 ERA 3.60) will get the call.
