Alexandar Georgiev made 25 saves for the win. Vladimir Tarasenko and Lucas Raymond scored for the Red Wings. Ville Husso made 18 saves in the loss.

The Sharks have given up the lead in the third period in several recent games. After the game, Jan Rutta said: “We’ve been in this situation more than a few times this year. So, we got the job done today. Hopefully that’s just a sign of us taking steps in the right direction and that when we have the lead we can play like tonight.”

Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky talked about Georgiev’s performance in the win: “He was tracking pucks, he was locked in, made some huge saves for us, so… You can see his game it’s been trending in the right direction. So happy that he got rewarded tonight with the win for sure.”

The Sharks took an early lead with a goal from Jan Rutta at 1:45. Alexander Wennberg stole the puck away from Detroit below the goal line, then centered it for Will Smith. Smith took the shot and then caught his own rebound. He passed it up to Rutta above the faceoff circles. Rutta took the shot from high in the slot through some traffic. Assists went to Smith and Wennberg.

The Sharks added to their lead with a short-handed goal at 17:41. William Eklund broke away into the neutral zone then lost the puck before he got to the Detroit blue line. He gathered the puck back up and passed it to Nico Sturm on the blue line. Sturm carried the puck in and took the shot from just above the goal line. Assists went to Eklund and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

William Eklund made it 3-1 28 seconds into the third period. Eklund passed the puck behind the net to Celebrini, who then passed it back through the blue paint to Eklund, who knocked it into the net. Celebrini and Tyler Toffoli got the assists.

Tarasenko trimmed the Sharks’ lead again, with his second of the night. Erik Gustafsson shot the puck off the backboards so that it centered just as Tarasenko arrived at the net to shoot it in. Gustafsson and Joe Veleno got the assists.

The Sharks took back their two goal lead at 7:43 with a power play goal. Mikael Granlund caught a pass from Macklin Celebrini at the top of the faceoff circle. Granlund carried the puck almost past the net before scoring with a backhand shot.

Lucas Raymond got one back for Detroit at 9:56 with a wrist shot. Going right to the net after a faceoff, he caught the pass from faceoff winner Dylan Larkin.

Tyler Toffoli made it 5-3 at 10:57. William Eklund gathered up a loose puck in front of the net and passed it ahead to Toffoli, who shot it in from a bad angle.

Mario Ferraro scored an empty net goal at 18:22 with a shot from just above the Sharks’ goal line.

The shots were almost even at 10-9 Sharks in the third period. The Red Wings took their first penalty of the game and the only one called in the third. The Sharks power play got two shots on goal and scored.

The Sharks Taste Victory over Detroit in OT

The Sharks are back in town they are certainly not in the best mood after losing three games in a row. Tonight, they host the Red Wings.

By Fernando Abarca

We missed you, SAP Center.

SAN JOSE –– The San Jose Sharks (5-10-4) are back for Monday Night action after a not-so-good trip filled with OT losses and one win and host the Detroit Red Wings (7-9-1).

The Red Wings currently sit last in the Atlantic Division, not so different from the Sharks, who sit last in the Pacific Division. Both teams are coming to this game with tough losses, starting with the Sharks suffering a loss in overtime, 4-3, against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. The Sharks took a close one from the Kanasa

The Red Wings visit to the West Coast has not gone as expected. The Wings played Anaheim and Los Angeles, and both games ended in losses with 4-6 vs. ANA and 1-4 vs. LAK. The Red Wings will try to finish their trip with a win over the Sharks.

The first period started with the Red Wings attacking first, Montz Seider, with possession of the puck, sent it into the Sharks zone and bounced off the boards. Poor execution by the Sharks goalie. Jake Walman, with the puck clearance, failed to get it far, leaving Simon Edvinsson with all the space and time to form the play, Larkin, with perfect timing, scored the first goal for the Red Wings.

The Sharks were able to recover quickly from the visitors’ first attack. The Sharks responded after having received a powerplay in their favor. William Eklund favored both in the creation of the play with Alexander Wennberg, whose shot did not enter the net but bounced enough for Eklund to score the equalizer.

Eklund didn’t finish business there, in the second period of the match, he scored another goal for the Sharks with a powerful wrist shot assisted by Mario Ferraro and Fabian Zetterlund.

Still, in the first period. With a powerplay for the visitors, Shark’s Goaltender did his best to keep the goal without any more pucks in the net, but a rebound inside the zone cost him dearly, and Marco Kasper made it 2-1 at the end of the period.

In the second, the Sharks looked more dominant, scoring two goals, the aforementioned by Eklund and Tyler Toffoli, who got another goal on his stats, ending the period with a 3-3 tie.

6:19 into the third period, Luke Kunin lifts the spirits of the SAP Center crowd with a wrist shot, putting the score at 4-3.

The chants began to sound louder in the SAP, and clearly better hockey by the Sharks with more continuous counterattacks and shots on goal.

The effort was not enough to keep the lead, and Detroit’s Alex DeBrincat scored a fourth goal late in the third period on a PowerPlay.

The game ended on a good note, Macklin Celebrini finished business at SAP Center with his first career OT goal to send good energy to all the fans at the tank.

After a stormy trip away from home, some sunshine came down to the SAP Center. The Sharks go back on the road to face Dallas and St. Louis to come back home Saturday against Buffalo.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Fernando Abarca: Sharks host Red Wings tonight; Yaroslav Askarov promoted to Sharks after having banner season in net at the AHL

San Jose Barracuda goaltender Yaroslav Askarov is all smiles. Askarov has been promoted to the San Jose Sharks as of Mon Nov 18, 2024 after having a standout season in the AHL. (Panayiota Good/San Jose Barracuda photo)

On the San Jose Sharks podcast with Fernando Abarca:

#1 The San Jose Sharks have promoted goaltender Yaroslav Askarov from AHL affiliate the San Jose Barracuda. Askarov has had an outstanding season with the Barracuda is 6-3 with two shutouts and a 1.92 goals against average. Fernando this has to be a big opportunity for Askarov who could get a start tonight?

#2 The San Jose Sharks took a tough loss 4-3 from the Pittsburgh Penguins. in a shootout in their last game last Saturday in Pittsburgh that concluded their four game road trip. Fernando it’s not the kind of way that Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky wanted it to end?

#3 The Penguins Evgeni Malkin scored the winning goal of the shootout. Sidney Crosby and Anthony Beauvillier scored goals in the shootout as well. Fernando there is no doubt your looking at some very talented shooters in a shootout like that when your facing Malkin, Crosby and Beauvillier?

#4 The Sharks Alex Wennberg made the attempt to score on Penguins goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic in the fifth round of the shootout but couldn’t convert thus the Sharks lose it by a goal and those can be part of the frustrations of the game not being able to get that vital goal when the game is on the line?

#5 Fernando another note former Shark and current Penguin Erik Karlsson got an assist and passed former Shark Doug Wilson for 16th place on the NHL career points list for defensemen. You don’t see too many defensemen who can pile up the goals like Karlsson has done in his career?

#6 The Sharks (5-10-4) who are back in San Jose to face off with the Detroit Red Wings here at SAP Center. The Red Wings are a struggling bunch at 7-9-1 and seventh place in the Atlantic Division, the Wings have lost their last two games and lost seven of their last ten games. The Sharks coming off that loss in Pittsburgh have a good chance to pick up a win tonight?

Utah Hockey Club Douses Flames 5-1

Utah HC Bounces Back Big From Monday Loss With Commanding Win Over Calgary

By Tom Walker

SALT LAKE CITY–In the aftermath of Utah Hockey Club’s third period collapse and overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday, the team dealt a 2025 third-round draft pick to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday to acquire veteran defenseman Olli Määttä. The Finnish 30-year-old brings much-needed depth to a defense reeling from long-term injuries to John Marino and Sean Durzi.

Määttä joined the lineup on Wednesday night as Utah HC played host to the Calgary Flames. Määttä is reunited with former teammate Ian Cole, both of whom won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. He entered tonight’s game with 177 points (40g, 137a) in 691 career NHL contests with PIT, CHI, LAK and DET.

Alex Kerfoot gave Utah an early lead at 4:41 of the first period with his first goal of the season, assisted by Michael Kesselring and Mikhail Sergachev. With 61 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Martin Pospisil and Mikhail Sergachev both went to the box for roughing penalties. Utah controlled the puck for much of the final minute, but seemed as if they would run out the clock in their own defensive zone.

As the final seconds counted down on the scoreboard, Utah rushed up the ice and Barrett Hayton found the back of the net with slightly less than two seconds remaining, his fifth of the season, assisted by Nick Schmaltz and Ian Cole. This was the latest goal Utah has scored in any period so far this season.

Calgary cut their deficit in half at 3:53 of the second period on a goal by Anthony Mantha, assisted by Justin Kirkland and MacKenzie Weegar. Utah answered just 17 seconds later when rookie Maveric Lamoureux scored his first NHL goal from near the blue line in his fourth game since being called up from Tucson, assisted by Kevin Stenlund and Jack McBain.

Late in the period, Utah went on the power play as Calgary’s Anthony Mantha went to the box for roughing. He was joined forty seconds later in the sin bin by Blake Coleman who committed a boarding penalty against Clayton Keller, giving Utah a 5-on-3 advantage.

With five seconds remaining on the first penalty, defenseman Mikhail Sergachev netted his second goal of the season, assisted by Dylan Guenther and Nick Schmaltz, giving the home team a 4-1 lead heading into the locker room.

Utah also had a 4-1 lead entering the third period on Monday night, only to squander it in the final five minutes of the game, so nothing would be taken for granted. Dylan Guenther gave the Flames a chance to get back into the game, committing a holding penalty against Andrei Kuzmenko which Utah was able to kill. At 4:53 of the third, Calgary’s Nazem Kadri gave Utah another power play opportunity, going to the box for cross-checking against Juuso Valimaki.

That was all captain Clayton Keller needed to increase Utah’s lead to 5-1 on his sixth goal of the season, assisted by Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev. This time the defense held on to deny Calgary a comeback, with goaltender Connor Ingram stopping 30 of 31 shots for the win.

Following the game, Utah HC head coach André Tourigny commented on the team’s response to Monday’s game. “Really (satisfying). I was confident that would happen. There’s a lot of factors that can happen in the game. (If) they get a great scoring chance and score right away at the beginning or whatever, it can shake you a little bit. But I was confident we’d play solid.”

Tourigny had praise for 20-year-old defenseman Maveric Lamoureux who scored his first career NHL goal and point. “Great for Mav; I’m really happy for him. That was great–but the timing of it, it could have been anybody. I was really happy (with the timing). But I’m really happy for Mav. That was great. But the timing of it; (Calgary) got close at 2-1 and we scored on the next shift. That was solid…All of the shift was solid. I liked the reaction after (we gave up) that goal. You needed a solid shift and we had one.”

Lamoureux weighed in on his first goal after the game. “It was amazing. It just felt like it was going in slowly. Then I saw the light go on. I was really happy when I saw it go in.” When asked how many texts he received after his first goal, he responded, “No idea. It’s probably going to be blowing up like it was when I got called up to play my first game. So it’s probably going to take me a few days to answer everyone.”

Newly acquired defenseman Olli Määttä spoke in the locker room about the last 24 hours since being traded from Detroit. “I don’t think you ever get used to it. It was quite the night and quite the morning. But I think the moment I came in here, guys welcomed me really good. I can see this organization is a great one. There’s a great thing going on here, a great group of guys we got. It just feels right.” With regard to his expectations going into Wednesday night’s game, and his first impressions of Salt Lake City and the Delta Center, Määttä commented, “I didn’t know what to expect, to be honest. I just wanted to go out there and play. It wasn’t really a routine game day. But it was fun. … I played here in (the Frozen Fury exhibition) with the Kings against Vegas. But I liked it. The rink’s awesome. The city’s awesome. When you land, you see the mountains and everything. It looks so cool.”

Speaking of the win, captain Clayton Keller said, “It feels good. Obviously, we had a good first two periods. We wanted to learn from our last couple games and our mistakes. I thought we did a good job.” What changed over the last few games? “I thought we were simple. We kept the pucks going North. Before, we kind of backed off and gave (opponents) some space. Tonight, I thought we did a good job staying above (Calgary), not giving them much space and letting them get in the game. I’m proud of the way we responded. … This is the best league in the world. It’s hard to do it consistently and every single night. That’s something that we’re striving for. Even nights when you don’t have your best (night), there’s still ways you can find a way to win or get a point or two.”

Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund commented afterward about playing in his 1000th career game, all in a Flames jersey. “That was great. It was an awesome feeling skating out and doing a solo lap. It’s been a long time since I did that last, that was a special feeling for sure. It sucks that it didn’t carry over into the game.”

According to NHL Stats, Backlund is the second player to skate in 1,000 NHL contests with the Flames, Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Jarome Iginla having been the first. Jarome’s son, Tij Iginla, was selected sixth overall by Utah in the 2024 NHL Draft and is currently playing for the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL.

Utah now hits the road for a 4-game swing beginning on Saturday in Las Vegas and continuing to Winnipeg, St. Louis, and Nashville before returning home on November 13 to face the Carolina Hurricanes.

#3 The Sharks on Thursday tried to see if see if bringing up goaltender Magnus Chrona who was pelted with Edmonton Oilers shots he faced 20 shots and allowed four goals and was pulled from the game. Did Sharks head coach David Quinn want to see what Chrona could deliver to strengthen the goaltending or to see if Chrona would fit in as a back up?

#4 Titus, coach Quinn and the Sharks had team captain Logan Couture on the Colorado trip to see how he would skate and how he’s handling practice plays and where he’s at physically. Asked if he was ready to return and Quinn said “zero” it was just an opportunity to see where he was at. How bad does this team miss Couture out of the line up at the juncture?
