Kings hit .500 mark lose to Mavs 105-99; Third loss of the season

The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Sunday afternoon in Dallas Texas. The Kings last played on Friday night against the Pelicans. Tip off for Sunday was set at 12:30 PM PST in Dallas against the Mavericks. However, before we dive into Sunday’s game let’s take a look back at Friday’s matchup.

Flashback Friday:

On Friday the Kings took on the the New Orleans Pelicans on the road. The Kings came into the game 2-2 and were looking to beat a team that was lacking the services of Zion Williamson. The Kings played a good overall game coming out on top 113-109. The Kings defense was inconsistent throughout the game but they managed to win the game.

Sunday Recap:

In the first half of Sundays game the first quarter specifically, it was rough for the Kings. The start of the game in the first quarter was a disaster for the Kings. The Kings got into an early 15 point deficit with 7:40 to play in the first. The Kings didn’t seem to come out with the intensity they needed to in the first quarter. The Mavericks outscored the Kings 31-22 in the first quarter,

In the second quarter, the Kings played much better. The Kings defense upped the pressure holding the Mavericks to only 22 points as the Kings offense put up 25 points. The Kings would still have to make up some ground in the second half down 53-47 at halftime.

In the third, the Kings played a solid quarter for the majority of the time. However, the last two minutes of the quarter the Kings completely melted down. The Kings had cut the Mavericks lead to three points until the Mavericks were able to go in a run to go up 10 points going into the final quarter. The Kings would be down 82-72 heading into the the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, it wasn’t the Kings day for a comeback. The Kings poor shooting continued and De’Aaron Fox wasn’t able to take over on offense as the Kings struggled to mount a comeback. The Kings did outscore and he Mavericks 27-23 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit as the Kings lost 105-99.

The Kings didn’t have it on the offensive end of the floor on Sunday but did play well on defense overall. Leading the way for the victorious Mavericks was Luka Doncic who scored 23 points. The Kings were led in defeat by Richaun Holmes who had 22 points.

Up Next: The Kings will take on the Utah Jazz in Utah on Tuesday at 6PM PST.

On the NBA Playoffs with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, the Atlanta Hawks (1-0) are really showing what a powerful successful team they are with a first game victory over the Philadelphia 76ers (0-1) 128-124 on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center.

#2 The Hawks Trae Young is over having pop corn spilled on him in New York during the first round of the playoffs and was spilling baskets against the Sixers leading in team scoring with 35 points which all counted in a four point first game win.

#3 Game two is Tuesday night in Philadelphia the Hawks Young has been leading scorer, Bogdan Bogdanovic was second in scoring with 21 and Kevin Huerter was third in scoring with 15. For the 76ers Joel Embiid top scorer on Sunday with 39 and four 76ers finished in double figures. Joe how do you get a read on game 2?

#4 It wasn’t even close the LA Clippers had offensive control, they had ball possession and the Mavericks certainly were struggling to shut down the Clippers shots.

The Sacramento Kings swept the contending Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night with a 111-99 victory at the American Airlines Center.

While the Kings are 12th in the Western Conference and face an uphill battle to reach the 10th seed to qualify for the play-in tournament, they had no trouble defeating the Mavericks in all three games within a 15-day span.

“All three of the games came during a stretch when we were playing pretty well from the standpoint of togetherness and rebounding and our defense was solid tonight,” Kings coach Luke Walton said. “It takes that type of effort to give yourself a chance to win.”

Buddy Hield scored 27 points and Marvin Bagley III got 23 points and nine rebounds. Together, Hield and Bagley had 13 points in a 15-3 run that gave Sacramento a 87-70 lead in the third quarter.

Dallas got within six points in the last two minutes of the game. Hield beat the shot clock with a triple to put the Kings up 106-97. Hield was 6 of 10 from the three-point line and Sacramento was 11 of 28.

The Kings never trailed on Sunday or in the second matchup in Dallas, starting both with an 8-0 lead. The Mavericks evened the score several times but were unable to pull ahead. Sacramento won the first game 121-107 in Dallas and trailed for only 42 seconds.

Sacramento suffered another injury on Sunday as rookie Tyrese Halliburton suffered an injury to his left knee and left the game in the arid quarter. The Kings are missing De’Aaron Fox due to coronavirus protocols and Harrison Barnes due to a left thigh injury, both of them starters.

The Kings continue to their third game in a four-game road trip on Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Mavericks rout the Warriors 133-103

The visiting Dallas Mavericks (34-27), hoping to rebound from a loss to the Sacramento Kings Monday night, routed the Golden State Warriors (31-31) 133-103. The final score did not indicate how poorly the Warriors played. The Mavericks game plan was to find a way to stop Stephen Curry from beating them. Their plan worked. The Warriors played one of their worst first 24 minutes of play in team history.

The game was close for the first 3:20. Curry connected on a three to put the Warriors ahead 12-11 with 8:40 left in the first quarter. That was the last time the Warriors would be in the lead. They did not score another point in the first period. Dallas went on a 25-0 run to finish the quarter with a 24-point lead 36-12. 

Dallas started the second quarter with a three. The Warriors finally made a basket. Dallas’ defense smothered the Warriors offense. Dallas outscored them 26-17 to finish the first half with a commanding lead 62-29. The game was over for all intents and purposes, even with 24 minutes left to play.

Dallas’ all-world forward Luka Doncic poured in 23 points in the third quarter to finish the night with 39 points. He made shots from all angles. He was Merlin the magician Tuesday night. Curry tallied 15 to finish with 27. Dallas led by 39 points 103-64.

It’s a shame that the NBA doesn’t have a mercy rule. There was no way to overcome a 39-point deficit with 12 minutes left. Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr pulled their stars from the game. The reserves from both teams played the last 12 minutes. The Warriors bench outscored the Dallas bench by nine. The Mavericks won 133-103.

Game Notes and Stats: With the loss, the Warriors are 31-31 for the year. The Warriors have ten games left on the schedule. They play the next four games on the road and finish the season with six at the Chase Center. Dallas improved to 34-27. Dallas took two of the three games played against the Warriors this season.

The Warrior stats from the first half show how poorly they played/ Curry was the only player in double figures with 12. Andrew Wiggins was second with seven. No other Warrior had more than three points. They shot 28% from the floor. They were three-for-nineteen from downtown. Luka Doncic led Dallas with 16. 

Curry led the Warriors with 27. He was 9-for-18 from the floor and knocked down five threes in nine tries. Mychal Mulder finished with a career-high 26 points. Mulder was 10-for-16 from the floor, and he connected on six threes in 11 attempts. Wiggins had 15, Kelly Oubre, Jr. 10, and Jordan Poole 10. Luka Doncic had 39 for Dallas. Dorian Finney-Smith 13, Tim Hardaway, Jr. 13, Nicolo Melli 13, Jalen Brunson 12, and Maxi Kleber 10. 

The Warriors begin a four-game road trip Thursday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The second game is against the Oklahoma City Thunder, then two against the Pelicans in New Orleans. Thursday night’s game starts at 5 pm.

Sacramento Holds On To Beat Dallas

The Sacramento Kings will end the season on a sour note much as they started. This time the Kings are dealing with the loss of De’Aaron Fox who will miss 10-14 games due to covid protocol. The team very nearly beat the Golden State Warriors last night losing 117-113 without Fox. Had Fox been in the lineup chances are very good that the Kings would have come away with the win. Harrison Barnes,Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield played a great game; Barnes finished with 23 points. Haliburton had 24 and Hield with 25.

Now that, with only 12 games left in the season for the Kings, all they can hope for is to play spoiler. Tonight they took on the Dallas Mavericks who currently sit in sixth place in the Western Conference. They will again lean heavily on Hield, Haliburton and Barnes in the absence of Fox.

The Kings handled the Mavericks in their last meeting 121-107 and were looking for another win over Dallas. Which the Kings were able to manage in a victory over the Mavericks 113-106 on Monday night at the Golden One Center in Sacramento. Sacramento came out strong in the first quarter and finished the quarter the same way leading 31-17.

In the second quarter the Mavericks began to chip away at their deficit and with under three minutes left in the half were trailing by three points. At halftime the Kings led 59-52. Harrison Barnes led in scoring with 13 points and Richaun Holmes had 12. The Kings got some nice work from their bench as well. Sacramento will look for more production from Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton in the second half although Haliburton had seven assists in the first two quarters. This guy has been such an impressive rookie and I would think that rookie of the year is totally up for grabs right now. Haliburton has been so consistent all year and his future in the NBA looks bright to say the least.

The difference in the first half was Luka Doncic. He had a very slow start but once he got going the Kings really began to struggle. The 18 point lead that the Kings had during the first half was erased and the score was 65-63 in the early part of the third quarter with Dallas leading.

With 6:30 left in the third quarter Harrison Barnes left the game with a possible hip pointer. This was a real blow for the Kings. They had just begun to build their lead back up when Barnes was hurt. This guy has been so consistent this year only missing three games and the Kings really needed him on the court. He did go to the locker room and was there for the remainder of the game.

The Kings managed to hang onto the lead after three quarters. The score was 87-85 and Sacramento would have to lean on the three amigos Haliburton, Hield and Holmes to garner a win in this game.

So the Kings won their 25th game of the season 113-106. Holmes, Haliburton and Hield all stepped up in the second half. Holmes finished with 24 points and the bench had 34 points collectively. It was a great all-around game for the Kings.

They will be back on the court Wednesday taking on the Utah Jazz. Tipoff is at 7:00PM

The Sacramento Kings have had their share of ups and downs this season. Consistency and defense has been a constant problem for the team and now another kink in their armour; the loss of Richaun Holmes with a confirmed right hamstring strain. He will obviously be out tonight and will not travel to Phoenix and Dallas. His confirmed return to action will be simply when appropriate. Just another blow for the team this season, a very tough one.

There is some good news for Kings fans however and that is that the Golden 1 Center will be welcoming fans back on April 20th. Frontline workers will be honored by being the first fans back in the arena to not only honor but to also thank them for their tireless efforts. Capacity for the first game back will be 1,600 fans.

Sunday night the Kings took on the Mavericks. Dallas has a 30-25 record while Sacramento has a 22-34 record. A win in this game would be a very good thing considering that the Mavericks are currently in 7th place in the Western Conference.

The first quarter was a close one with the Kings outscoring the Mavericks 22-20 but it was the second quarter when the Kings really pulled out into the lead outscoring Dallas 45-30. The score at the half was 67-50. A sizable lead but the Mavericks had a lot to play for and this game was by no means a done deal for the Kings.

After three quarters the Mavericks still trailed but the Kings lead had shrunk from a 17 point lead to a 10 point lead. The score at the end of the third quarter was 87-77 in favor of the Kings. Sacramento had to hang on for one more quarter to seal the win. The King’s needed De’Aaron Fox to really step up the pace along with some defensive stops.

It was a very nervous fourth quarter for the Kings and with under eight minutes left in the game they led by seven points. The Mavericks were not going anywhere and the Kings would have to earn this win. Luka Doncic had gone off in the fourth quarter. Every time the Mavericks got close Sacramento would answer. De’Aaron Fox and Harrison Barnes came up with some huge points and Terence Davis had an amazing 23 points in 28 minutes off the bench.

With one minutes left in the game the Kings led by twelve points and Sacramento had delivered when they needed to. The final score was 121-107. Fox would finish with 30 points and Barnes with 24 in an impressive win for Sacramento.

The Kings will be back in play on Tuesday taking on the last place Timberwolves. Tipoff is at 7:00 PM.

According to history, the tradition of playing the National Anthem at sporting events began in 1918, during the seventh inning of game one of the World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox.  The NBA was not founded until 1946.

Mark Cuban, billionaire-owner of the Dallas Mavericks said back in November his team will not play the National Anthem. The NBA sent a memo to all teams in the league that they all must play the National Anthem, to what Cuban responded: “We are good with it”.

And that was the end of that story. The NBA is a private business and they have the right to remind their teams/owners of their policy. The NBA sent the notice to all teams, but it was written because of the Dallas Mavericks and their owner.

Mark Cuban is one of the most passionate team owners in the NBA. Last year he was fined $500,000 for saying that director of officiating Ed Rush wasn’t fit to manage a Dairy Queen. He has said that the referee system in the NBA is a decade-long broken training system. He has been fined for at least $2.6 million.

When in Dallas, Cuban is always sitting on the Mavericks side, and has said he enjoys the whole experience and feels he is part of the team, like another player and often warms-up with the team prior to a game.

He is as competitive and passionate as any owner in the league. It reminds me of the once owner of the New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner.

Mavericks outlast Warriors win 134-132; Doncic has big night 42 points for Mavs

The Dallas Mavericks rebounded from their worst loss of the season Thursday night to beat the Golden State Warriors 134-132 Saturday night. The teams played another highly entertaining game as they raced up and down the court.

The Mavericks Luka Doncic tied a career-high with 42 points. The Warriors Steph Curry continued to shine as he knocked down 11 threes on his way to 57 points for the night. It was the eighth time in his storied NBA career that he scored more than 50 points in a game.

The Warriors scored more than 30 points in each of the four quarters. The Mavs also scored more than 30 in the first three quarters. The Warriors held them to 28 in the fourth.

Dallas got off to a blazing start in the first quarter. They raced out to an early 18-2 lead. The Warriors were unfazed. They fought back and were able to finish the first quarter trailing 35-31.

The Mavericks continued to put points on the board in the second quarter. They won the quarter 37-33 to finish the first half leading 72-64. Luka Doncic paced the Dallas offense, while Curry was the scoring leader for Golden State.

The Warriors won the third quarter by three points to trail by five 106-101. The Warriors tied the game at 88 when Juan Toscano-Anderson made a dunk. The Warriors regained the lead 101-100. Tim Hardaway, Jr. scored the last six points of the quarter. He was fouled making a three-pointer. He sank all three free throws. He then connected on a three to give Dallas the lead 106-101.

The Mavericks continued to maintain the lead. They increased the advantage to ten 118-108. The Warriors refused to give up. They chipped away at the Mavericks lead. They came to within a point when Curry drained a three to make it 131-130 with 28 seconds left. The Mavericks Maxi Kleber connected on a three with 5.6 seconds remaining to ice the win for Dallas. Curry made a bucket, but they could not overcome the four-point lead. Dallas wins 134-132.

Game Notes and Stats: With the loss, the Warriors record is now 12-11 for the year. Dallas improved to 10-14.

Last Thursday, the Warriors had seven players in double-figures. Saturday night was a different story as only four players were able to score double-digits. Curry led the team with 57 points, two rebounds, and five assists.

He was 19 for 31 from the floor, and he connected on eleven threes in 19 tries. Andrew Wiggins continued his excellent play on both ends of the court. Wiggins finished the night with 22 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Kelly Oubre, Jr., who had a career-high 40 points last Thursday, returned to earth as he recorded 14 points, five rebounds, and one assist.

Kelly was five for 16 from the floor, and he knocked down two threes. Draymond Green was outstanding as a playmaker and a force on defense. Green recorded 15 assists for the second game in a row.

He pulled down six boards, had six steals, and blocked four shots. He scored 11 points Thursday night. It was a different story Saturday night. He took just three shots, good for two points.

He also turned the ball over seven times. Juan Toscano-Anderson had a tough night on offense, too. The young man from East Oakland scored sixteen and fourteen points in the last two games. He did pull down ten rebounds but took just one shot, which tied the game at 88.

Kent Bazemore, coming off the bench, had his best game as a Warrior. He was seven for 11 from the floor and connected on two threes. He finished the night with 20 points. 

Luka Doncic led Dallas with 42 points. The other four Maverick starters all finished in double figures. Maxi Kleber had 16, Kristaps Porzingis 18, Dorian Finney-Smith 10, Josh Richardson 17. Mavericks reserves Timmy Hardaway, Jr had 11, and Dwight Powell 8.

The Warriors meet the San Antonio Spurs Monday and Tuesday nights in San Antonio. Tip off for both games at 5:30 pm.
