Stanford vs UC Davis Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Stanford Cardinal opens the 2014 football season Saturday August 30th. Their opponent will be the UC Davis Aggies. The game will be played at Stanford Stadium and game time is at 1:00 PDT.

This will be the 120th season for Stanford and the game is designated as the Bill Walsh Legacy Game

in honor of the late Stanford coach whose impact continues to felt at all levels of football.

Stanford hopes to have its sixth consecutive winning season, the last three under the tutelage of coach David Shaw. Stanford is 11-3 in its last 14 season openers, with six consecutive victories dating back to 20o8. Shaw could be the first Stanford head coach to win his first four season openers since the legendary Glenn “Pop”Warner from 1929-32.

The Cardinal has a wonderful 37-5 record at Stanford Stadium since the final home game of 2007 and is 10-0 against non-conference opponents since losing to Notre Dame in 2007.

Stanford has quarterback Kevin Hogan returning as well as wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Montgomery, who had shoulder surgery in February, has been cleared to play and will start on Saturday.

Junior running back, Kelsey Young is listed as the starting running back but Barry Sanders,Rickey Seale and Remound Wright are all listed as number 2 and they all should see considerable playing time.

Coach Shaw has had to rebuild some holes on both offense and defense and hopes the player will gel sooner rather than later. Blake Martinez replaces the departed Shayne Skov at inside linebacker.

A.J.Tarpley returns as a fifth year senior and can’t wait to get the season going. Blake Lueders and Aziz Shittu are listed as co-starters at one defensive end slot. Ronnie Harris and Alex Carter will share duties at left cornerback.

This will be the third meeting between Stanford and UC Davis. The series is tied at 1-1. The Aggies shocked the Cardinal in 2005 scoring twenty unanswered points to upset Stanford 20-17.

The Aggies are coached by Ron Gould. Gould is in his second year at the helm. Before coming to Davis, Gould coached at Cal where he helped develop several top flight running backs. The list includes Marshawn Lynch, Jahvid Best, Shane Vereen, Justin Forsett and Will Ta’ufo’ou.

The Aggies have eight starters returning on offense, six on defense and four on special teams.

The Aggies tied for fourth place in the Big Sky Conference but are unrated in the national polls.

Stanford is listed as number 11 in the nation in the pre-season poll.

Stanford will be favored but anything can happen and the Cardinal should not take the Aggies lightly.

The Cardinal begin Pac-12 play the following week as they entertain the USC Trojans at Stanford Stadium. Steve Sarkissian is the new head coach for USC.

Who Will Be Going to the Rose Bowl?

by Jerry Feitelberg

Who will Represent the Pac-12 in the Rose Bowl?

The championship of the Pac-12 will be decided Saturday afternoon at 4:45pm. The game will be played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, the home of Arizona State University. Both the Cardinal and the Sun Devils have identical season records of 10-2. ASU , even though they lost to Stanford in the third game of the season had the better record in conference play and thereby gained the right to host the Pac-12 championship game.ASU’s was 8-1 in conference play and their only loss came at the hands of Stanford. Stanford, on the other hand had a 7-2 record and both losses came on the road. The Cardinal fell to Utah and USC.

Should be an interesting game. Stanford really creamed ASU earlier in the season by a score of 42-28 and the game wasn’t really that close. Stanford controlled every facet of the game before ASU scored three touchdowns late in the fourth quarter when the game was well in hand.. ASU coach Todd Graham “apologized to the players for not having them ready.” Rest assure that Coach Graham will have his troops ready for Saturday’s game. It will be a home game and the fans will be the 12th man on the field for the Sun Devils.

ASU’s offense is led by Taylor Kelly. In he first game against Stanford, Kelly threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns. Jaelen Strong caught 12 passes for 168 yards. Notre Dame and Stanford beat ASU early in the season and the Sun Devils have been on a roll having won seven straight games.

Stanford will be led by quarterback Kevin Hogan as well as running backs Tyler Gaffney and Anthony Wilkerson. TY Montgomery is the ace of the receiving corps. The Cardinal’s defense has been outstanding all season long. They shut down three top quarterbacks so far this season. The Qbs at UCLA,Oregon State and Oregon all know what the Stanford defense can do. So it’s up the front three

and the great linebackers, Shayne Skov, Trent Murphy and A.J.Tarpley plus the outstanding corners

and safeties, especially Ed Reynolds to shut down the ASU offense.

The Cardinal players had a great time last year at the Rose Bowl. They want to go back again and

Coach David Shaw will have his troops ready for the game. Should be a war out there Saturday. Don’t miss it.

The Big Game Preview

Stanford California Football

by Jerry Feitelberg

Well folks. It’s time for the Big Game. There are lots of Big Games around the country. On the West Coast, the Big games are UCLA vs USC, Oregon vs Oregon State, Washington vs Washington State but the Big Game that the people of Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area , in particular, are interested in is the 116th renewal of the rivalry between Stanford University and the University of California.

The game will be played at Stanford Stadium on Saturday at 1pm and will be televised on Fox Sports 1.

Stanford, coached by David Shaw, enters the game with a record of 8-2,6-2 Pac-12 and is still smarting from the upset loss last week to USC. That loss may have cost the Cardinal a trip to the Rose Bowl this year. The California Golden Bears are now coached by Sonny Dykes. Dykes is in his first year as coach and his team is having a woeful season with a record of 1-10, 0-9 Pac-12. The Bears have lost nine games in a row and are a 31 ½ point underdog to Stanford.

This game, on paper, looks like an easy win for Stanford. However, records just do not count when Big Games are being played. The Bears will go all out as they have nothing to lose. Stanford, on the other hand, does have a lot to lose as they will not get a top Bowl invitation if they fall to California.

The Bears quarterback, Jared Goff said” No one thinks we have a chance. That’s not what we think inside our team.” That’s a lot of confidence for a young man on a 1-10 team. The Bears can put up points but their defense has been dismal as they showed in a 62-28 loss to USC.

Stanford, on the other hand, is highly motivated since they lost last week 20-17 to USC and Coach Shaw said” Our guys can’t wait to get back on the field.” Stanford does have an outside chance of going back to the Rose Bowl. Oregon will need to be upset by either Arizona or Oregon State and the Cardinal will have to beat Cal and Notre Dame.

Stanford leads the series 58-46 with 11 ties. The first game was played in1892 in San Francisco and the Stanford’s team manager was Herbert Hoover. Stanford has won three in a row and four of the last six games. Lots of strange things can happen in the Big Game. The most memorable came in 1982

when Cal scored the winning touchdown running through the Stanford Marching Band to defeat the Cardinal. Joe Starkey, the voice of the Cal Bears on radio, made one of the greatest calls in the history of college football that day and that call is still played every year to remind people of how unpredictable college football can be and especially in the Big Game.

The winner of the game gets possession of the Stanford Axe. The trophy consists of an axe-head mounted on a large wooden plaque ,along with scores of past Big Games.

The Game will be a sellout and even with the huge point spread, it should be a fun game and Stanford cannot afford to be caught napping and lose this game.

Stanford vs USC Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

Stanford vs USC Preview

The Stanford Cardinal, coming off an impressive win against previously unbeaten Oregon last week, travel to Los Angeles to face the rejuvenated Trojans of the University of Southern California.

The Trojans had a turbulent start to the season going 3-2 under Lane Kiffin. The Trojans felt they

had enough of Kiffin and fired him in September. Firings usual come at the end of season and

SC must have had it up to their ears with Kiffin to make such a drastic move. This was not Kiffin’s first mid-season firing as the Oakland Raiders dismissed him a few years when the late Al Davis pulled the rug from under him as Raider head coach.

Stanford (8-1)will be looking to beat USC (7-3) for the fifth consecutive time Saturday night.

Stanford coach David Shaw said “ I think we are at that point in the season no where we cannot afford to go up and down. It’s November, and there’s only one way you can play in November and that’s all-out.”

The Trojans appointed Ed Orgeron as the interim head coach and the Trojans have won three in a row and four out of the five. USC creamed Cal last week 62-28 and have their rushing game going as they have 498 yards rushing in the last two games and 988 total yards in those two games.

Cody Kessler is the Trojan quarterback and he sparked the Trojans during the winning streak by completing 74.3 % of his passes for 9.24 yards per attempt with four touchdowns and one interception.

The running game is led by sophomore tailback Javorius “Buck” Allen who has gained 268 yard in 22 caries in the wins over Oregon State and Cal. Other players on the USC team to keep an eye on are

Nelson Aghlor who has returned two punts for touchdowns and Josh Shaw who blocked a punt and returned it 14 yards for the score.

The Cardinal defense stopped the Oregon running game cold last week and will have to do the same against the Trojans. Shayne Skov had eleven tackles for the Cardinal last week and did a tremendous job. Trent Murphy and A.J.Tarpley have been stellar for the Cardinal at linebacker and Henry Anderson’s return at defensive end has been a big boost for the Cardinal. Free safety Ed Reynolds has been named a semi-finalist for the 10th annual Lott IMPACT award for defensive players.

In the last three games the Stanford defense has shut down three very good quarterbacks. The stopped UCLA’s Brett Hundley, Oregon State’s Sean Mannion and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.

The offense has done its job, too. The offense is led by quarterback Kevin Hogan who went 18 for 25 and 227 against UCLA but threw only 31 total passes in the games against Oregon State and Oregon.

The reason for that that was Tyler Gaffney’s impressive performance. Gaffney has rushed for 1043 yards so far and is third in the Pac-12. He averages 4.9 yards per carry and has 14 touchdowns to his credit. Gaffney has scored seven times in the past four games and set a team record 45 carries good for 157 yards in the win against Oregon.

There’s a lot at stake for the Cardinal. A win will keep them in contention for a BCS berth. USC wants

to snap the four game losing streak against the Cardinal and will be going all out to achieve that end.

Should be a great game. Don’t miss it.

Stanford vs Oregon State

Well fans, the biggest game of the year in the Pac-12 is upon us. The Stanford Cardinal football team has a record of 7-1 and will be facing the high-powered offense of the Oregon Ducks who are undefeated with a record of 8-0. The Ducks are ranked second in the nation and will be looking to

get revenge for losing to the Cardinal last year. The Stanford Cardinal went to to Eugene and upset the Ducks 17-14. The Cardinal then played UCLA for the Pac-12 crown and went on to the Rose Bowl

and beat Wisconsin. If the Ducks win Thursday evening, they will be favored to be Pac-12 champs

and perhaps play for the BCS crown this year.

The Cardinal lost tight end Zach Ertz and running back Stepfan Taylor to graduation and the

Cardinal offense , while good, still has to grind out the yardage. The Ducks , on the other hand, move the ball up and down the field and it will take a strong defensive effort by the Cardinal to stop them.

The Cardinal uses a gap plugging 3-4 defense and they are very physical. The defensive line will be bolstered by the return of big Henry Anderson and place kicker Jordan Williamson will be returning after recovering from an injury. The Cardinal has to stop Heisman Trophy candidate, Marcus Mariota in order to win. That will be a tall order but the Cardinal has stopped UCLA’s Brett Hundley and Oregon State’s Sean Mannion.

The game is sold out and game time is at 6pm PT at Stanford Stadium. The gNation will be watching two teams from the Pac-12 ranked in the top ten. Don’t miss it.

Stanford vs Oregon Preview: Game Of The Year

Stanford-vs-Oregon1by Jerry Feitelberg

Well fans, this is the game of the year in not only the Pac-12 north division but the entire Pac-12 and , perhaps, the nation.

Stanford will be playing the the high-flying Oregon Ducks on Thursday November 7th at Stanford Stadium at 6pm The Ducks are ranked #2 nationally with a 8-0 record. Stanford has a record is 7-1 i and is ranked at # 5. The game is sold out but there may be some single seats available

Oregon will be looking to avenge the 17-14 loss they suffered to the Cardinal last year at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. The Ducks never lose at home but they did last year and Stanford, not Oregon, went to the Rose Bowl. The Ducks are loaded again. They are led by first year head coach Mark Helrich. Chip Kelly, who built Oregon into a national powerhouse, fled to the NFL and is in the process of rebuilding the Philadelphia Eagle franchise. Helrich has the Ducks playing at an extremely high level again this year. Oregon has scored 34 points or more in 34 consecutive games. The lone exception was the loss to Stanford last year. Handling the chores at quarterback is Marcus Mariota, who is a sophomore. Mariota has been named a semi-finalist for the Maxwell Club’s Award for Collegiate Player of the year. Mariota runs an offense that is second nationally in scoring and in total offense averaging 632 yards per game. That, folks, is absolutely off the charts. Mariota also has completed sixty-four percent of his passes.

The Stanford defense will be sorely tested. Defensive end Ben Gardner has been sidelined for the rest of the season with an arm injury. Stanford’s strength on defense has been the pass rush. Stanford ranks third nationally with 27 sacks and Gardner was second on the team with 4.5 sacks behind Trent Murphy’s 9.5. Murphy, by the way, was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week. In the game against Oregon State, Murphy recorded 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks. Logged 8 tackles, 2 quarterback hurries and blocked an extra point. It was the second times this season that Murphy has won the award.

It should be interesting to see how Stanford’s great defense, albeit riddled with injury, can stand up to the offensive onslaught that will be coming there way on November 7th. The Cardinal shut down Oregon State’s Shawn Mannion last week and limited OSU to just 12 points. The Cardinal offense is going to have to get their game going in order to beat the Ducks.

While Gardner is lost for the year, the Cardinal has Senior Henry Anderson returning from injury and Anderson will be at defensive end for the Cardinal.

There is no doubt about it. This should be one of the great games of the year. The winner may be in the BCS championship game. The eyes of the nation will be watching for sure.

Stanford vs. Oregon State Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

Stanford vs Oregon State Preview

Stanford (6-1,4-1 Pac-12) travels to Corvallis Oregon Saturday to take on the Oregon State Beavers (6-1,4-0 Pac-12. Game time will be at 7:30pm PT and will be televised on ESPN.

The Beavers are unranked but have won their last six games after being upset by Eastern Washington in the opening game of the year. The Beavers did something that the Cardinal couldn’t do and this was

beating Utah in Salt Lake City. The Beaver offense is led by quarterback Sean Mannion and Brandin Cooks. Both are both Northern California products. Mannion is from Pleasanton and Cooks is from Stockton. How dynamic are these two? Mannion leads the nation in passing yardage(2992) and touchdowns(29) while Cooks has made 76 receptions good for 1176 yards and twelve touchdowns.

Mannion’s completion percentage is 68.6 and the Beavers like to go deep. It has been noted that Oregon State’s pro-style system features the most productive downfield passing game in the conference.

The Beavers defense has improved since the opening day loss to Eastern Washington and the offensive line has improved greatly since that loss.

Oregon State’s coach,Mike Riley thinks Stanford’s secondary will be a challenge to his team’s passing game. Riley said “they are very athletic and tough. They really compete. It’s a good looking group of guys. They’re always well coached and sound in what they do. It’s the most athletic group on defense that we’ve seen so far and they’re very sound in what they do.”

Stanford coach David Shaw, when asked about slowing down Brandin Cooks, replied “ He’s everybody’s responsibility. There is no other way around it. Safeties, corners nickels all have to be aware he is. Coach Shaw noted that receiver Kodi Whitfield and tailback Barry Sanders will continue to share the punt return duties. Kevin Hogan will be at quarterback again and Tyler Gaffney will

be the Cardinal’s main running back. Gaffney had a terrific game against UCLA last week.

Cardinal Safety Jordan Richards was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after recording two interceptions against UCLA last week. There is a possibility that receiver Devon Cajuste may play against the Beavers on Saturday. Cajuste suffered a right knee injury last week. Kicker Jordan Williamson will be on the trip to Corvallis but it is not clear if he will play. If Williamson can’t play, Conrad Ukropina will again fill in. Ukropina was one for two on field goals against UCLA.

The game should be very close. Stanford needs to win as they face the high-flying Oregon Ducks on November 7th. Should Stanford lose, it would dim their chances for a Pac-12 championship. If the Beavers win, they will probably become a nationally ranked team. Stanford will be playing in a hostile environment again and they have their work cut out for them on Saturday.

Preview of Stanford vs UCLA

by Jerry Feitelberg

Preview of UCLA vs. Stanford

The Stanford Cardinal (5-0,3-1Pac12) ranked 13th nationally after losing to the University of Utah last Saturday will be meeting the 9th ranked UCLA Bruins(5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) at Stanford Stadium at 12:30pm. The Cardinal, still smarting from their loss to the unranked University of Utah Utes will be

looking to get back on the winning track again but the Bruins are loaded and will be gunning to avenge the two losses they sustained last year against Stanford.

The Bruins are coming off a big win last week in Pasadena as they trounced the California Bears 37-10.

The Bruin offense is led by Sophomore quarterback Brett Hundley. Hundley threw for 410 yards last week and that was the third most ever by a UCLA quarterback. So far this year, Hundley has completed 109 passes for 1469 yards and 12 touchdowns. His main receivers are Shaquelle Evans and Devin Fuller. Evans has caught 20 passes for 289 yards and 4 touchdowns while Fuller has 22 receptions good for 165 yards and two Tds. The Bruins main rushing threat is Jordon Jones who has rushed for 469 yards this year averaging 6.3 yards per card and he has scored five touchdowns.

The Bruin defense is led by All-American Linebacker Anthony Barr. Barr is a monster on the field and loves to sack the quarterback. Other players of note on defense are senior defensive end Keenan Graham and Freshman Eddie Vanderdoes. Myles Jack is a monster-in -training at linebacker.

The weakness of the Bruin defense was expected to be the secondary but they had a six-interception game at Utah and they are feeling very good about themselves.

Stanford ‘s offense is led by quarterback Kevin Hogan. Hogan has completed 82 passes this year good for 1178 yards and has 12 touchdowns to his credit. He has been intercepted 4 times. Running back Tyler Gaffney has rushed for 570 yards and has scored seven touchdowns. Hogan’s main receiving targets are Ty Montgomery who had 31 receptions good for 514 yards and five scores and Devon Cajuste has made 14 catches for 268 yards and four touchdowns.

The Stanford defense was a little banged up last week against Utah. Nose Tackle David Parry was injured. Parry started the game but was ineffective. The Cardinal gave up 181 yards rushing as a result.

The Cardinal will need A.J.Tarpley, Shayne Skov and Trent Murphy to be on the top of their game in order to stop the high-powered UCLA offense.

Should be a great game between two old rivals. UCLA leads the series 45-36-3. The Bruins have won six of the last twelve meetings but the Cardinal has won the last five.

The Cardinal’s schedule doesn’t get any easier as the play Oregon State at Corvallis on October 26th and then meet the powerful Oregon Ducks at Stanford Stadium on November 7th.

Stanford vs. Utah Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Stanford Cardinal (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12) meets the University of Utah Utes (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12)

on Saturday October 12th at 3pm PT at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Saturday’s game marks the first time that Stanford will play Utah as a Pac-12 opponent. This will be the sixth meeting of the teams in a series that dates back to 1902. Stanford leads 3-2 so far. The last meeting was in 1996 and Stanford came up on the short end of the score losing 17-10.

The Cardinal is still ranked #5 nationally and has the second best winning streak (13 games) behind Ohio State’s 18 consecutive wins with schools in the FBS program.

Stanford narrowly edged Washington last week while Utah lost to #11 ranked UCLA. UCLA and

Stanford meet next week at Stanford. The Utes are coached by Kyle Whittingham and is in his ninth season as head coach and has a record of 74-43. The Utes offense is led by quarterback Travis Wilson.

Wilson was 22-44 for 228 yards against the Bruins but he was intercepted six times. His main targets are receivers Sean Fitzgerald and Dres Anderson. The running game features Kelvin York, Bubba Pool and Lucky Radley.

The Cardinal will again be led by Kevin Hogan, who is undefeated since taking over as quarterback last

year. Ty Gaffney is the Cardinal’s leading rusher. Wide Receiver, Ty Montgomery, who leads the Cardinal with 23 receptions and five touchdowns has been added to the Maxwell Award Watch list.

Last week Montgomery returned a kick-off for 99 yards. He also had a touchdown and a 68-yard kickoff return in the third period. He amassed 290 all-purpose yards and set a school record with 204 kickoff return yards.

The defense has been strong all year. The linebackers have been led bu Shayne Skov and A.J.Tarpley. Stanford defensive end Josh Mauro has been added to the Chuck Bednarik Award List. The Award

is given by the Maxwell Club on December 12th. Mauro had seven tackles in then Army game. Six of them were solo tackles. Mauro had a sack and an interception against Arizona State. So far this season he has 17 tackles with four for a loss of 29 yards including three sacks.

Utah Leads the Pac-12 in fewest fumbles lost(1) and is tied for the Pac-12 lead with Stanford in red zone offense(.944) and ranks first in the Pac-12 and third in the nation with sacks per game(3.6).

The Utah kicking game is outstanding. Placekicker Andy Phillips is perfect through five game making all nine of his attempts and has not missed an extra point. Punter Tom Hackett is tied for the Pac-12

lead in punt return average(44.0), punts inside the 20(11) and punts of 50+ yards(7).

The Cardinal is favored to win but playing on the road in a new venue is never easy. The Utes

appear able to score once the get into the red zone and Stanford’s defense will be tested.

Hogan and company are battle tested and should be able to break down Utah”s defense.

The Cardinal cannot look ahead to the showdown with UCLA. Stanford coach David Shaw will see to it that his team will be ready.

Stanford vs. Washington Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

Stanford vs. Washington Preview

The University of Washington Huskies arrive at Stanford Stadium to play the Stanford University Cardinal. Both teams are 4-0 overall. Stanford is 2-0 in Pac-12 conference play while the Huskies are

just 1-0. It will be a matchup on the number five rated Cardinal against the 15th ranked Huskies.

Game time is Saturday night at 7:30 pm at Stanford Stadium.

Stanford Coach David Shaw that this is not a “revenge” game for the Cardinal. However, the players are all aware of the defeat the Cardinal suffered last year in Seattle when they were upset 17-13 by the Huskies. The winner of the game will share the lead in the Pac-12 North Division with Oregon.

The Huskies are highly ranked in the NCAA in a number of offensive and defensive categories. They are third in third down conversions, fourth in completion percentage and fifth in total offense as well as second in pass efficiency defense and fourth in scoring defense. The Huskies are led by running back Bishop Sankey who is the nation’s number one rusher averaging 151.8 yards per game. Sankey broke Corey Dillon’s University of Washington record with 40 carries good for 161 yards against Arizona last week. He has rushed for 100 yards in seven of the last nine games and for 200 in two of his last five.

The Cardinal defense will have to be on their A game to slow Sankey down. The Husky quarterback, Keith Price, is now No.12 in the nation in pass efficiency and has moved into in the third spot in UW career passing with 6,997 career yards.

Stanford’s offense will be led by quarterback Kevin Hogan and running back Tyler Gaffney. Hogan is 9-0 as a starter and had a career high 286 yards and three touchdowns against Washington State last week. Gaffney has seven touchdowns(six rushing) through the first four games averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Wide receiver Ty Montgomery had led the team in receptions in all four games and wide receiver Devon Cajuste had four catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns last week against Washington State.

The offensive line will be bolstered by the return of David Yankey who missed last week’s game due to personal receivers. The offensive line features Kevin Danser and Cameron Fleming who are each a candidate for the Outland Trophy. Center Khalil Wilkes helped hold Washington State without a sack or a quarterback hurry.

On defense, defensive end Josh Mauro leads the Cardinal with three sacks. Defensive Tackle David Parry and the other defensive end Ben Gardner have been solid performers. Stanford has outstanding linebackers led by Shayne Skov, A.J.Tarpley, Trent Murphy and James Vaughters.

Free safety Ed Reynolds had six tackles against Arizona State while strong safety Jordan Richards returned an interception for a score against Washington State.

The game looks to be a barnburner with no holds barred between these two fierce rivals. The Huskies own a 41-38-4 advantage in the series between the two teams. The teams look pretty well evenly matched on paper but Stanford has home field advantage and hopefully the 12th man will give the Cardinal the inspiration to win the game.
