The Stanford Cardinal returns home to meet the Oregon State Beavers in a Pac-12 contest Saturday

at Stanford Stadium. Game time is at 12:30 pm and will be televised on ESPN2.

Both teams will be looking to rebound from defeats last week. The Cardinal was beaten 26-10 by the Arizona State Sun Devils. The defense played well but Stanford’s offense could not get untracked as they took their third loss of the season and the second in conference play. Overall the Cardinal is 4-3 and 2-2 in the Pac-12. The Beavers (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) are looking to rebound from a double overtime loss to Utah.

The Cardinal defense has been outstanding again this year. The defense leads the Pac-12 with just 153 yards allowed per game and is first in run defense allowing just 101.9 yard per game.

The Cardinal has a solid defensive line led by Henry Anderson, Blake Lueders and David Perry.

The linebackers are again led by A.J.Tarpley. Kevin Anderson and James Vaughters. The Cardinal ranks third in the Pac-12 with three sacks per game and the front three dominate the point of contact allowing the linebackers to swarm to the ball.

The Stanford secondary has performed well again this year. Strong safety Jordan Richards has 44 tackles to his credit. Alex Carter and Wayne Lyons are dependable corners and have contributed

mightily to Stanford’s strong defense.

The Cardinal offense, on the other hand, is struggling. The offensive line had to replace four starters and their lack of experience and depth have contributed to the offense’s woes. Stanford coach David Shaw took the blame for Stanford’s problems and refused to pin the blame on Kevin Hogan. Shaw said

that Stanford will try to rework the offense so that Hogan and the running backs and receivers can get it into gear once again. Running back by committee has not worked well for Stanford at all so far. The receivers led by Ty Montgomery, Devon Cajuste, Michael Rector, Francis Owusu and Jordan Pratt has produced 235 yard of passing yardage which is ranked 10th in the Pac-12 and have not produced as well as they thought they would.

The Beavers’ offense is led by quarterback Sean Mannion who thrives in OSU head coach Mike Riley’s

pro style offense. Mannion owns double-digit OSU passing records including the career passing mark he set last month. Mannion needs 315 yards to pass former USC quarterback Matt Barkley for the Pac-12 passing record. However, Mannion has failed to meet expectations this year as he has thrown five interceptions and just seven touchdowns. The Beaver running game is led by Storm Woods and Terron

Ward but Woods was hurt last week against Utah and is questionable for Saturday’s game. The edge, however, goes to Oregon State in that department. The OSU receivers have yet to prove themselves and Stanford holds the advantage in receiving.

The two teams are definitely evenly matched. The Stanford offense must come to life if they expect

to beat OSU while the Beavers offense will be sorely tested by the Stanford defense. They will win if the can find a way to beat the pass rush and get the running game going. The game is just too close to call.

Stanford vs Arizona State Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Stanford Cardinal meets the Sun Devils of Arizona State Saturday at Tempe Arizona at 7:30 pm PDT. The game will be televised on ESPN.

The Cardinal enters the game with a record of 4-2,2-1 Pac-12 and it’s defense will be sorely tested by the offense of ASU (4-1,2-1 Pac-12). Quarterback Mike Bercovici, filling in for injured QB Taylor Kelly, led the Sun Devils to a 38-34 victory over USC with a “Hail Mary “ pass on the last play of the game. Stanford leads the nation in fewest points allowed per game (10.0) and fourth against the pass (138.2 yards per game.)

The leading receiver for the Sun Devils is Jaelen Strong who has 41 catches for 641 yards and six touchdowns. He leads the Pac-12 in yards per game (122.8) and averages 15 yards per catch.

The Cardinal will be without the services of Devon Cajuste and that may make it more difficult for the offense to get things going. The Cardinal offense ranks 89th in the nation with 26.3 points per game.

Lack of scoring puts a lot of pressure on the Cardinal defense.

Should be a good game. The Cardinal defense against the potent ASU offense. The Cardinal shut down the passing game of Washington State last week but ASU is a more powerful opponent.

Stanford vs Washington State Preview

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSb5V0PekgUXPHCHFaUioD1cLy0yhND3B8BxhKf5d5e_zI2-PIbig

The Stanford Cardinal returns home to meet the Cougars of Washington State University Friday Night at Stanford Stadium. Game time will be at 6pm and will be on national television broadcast on ESPN and on KNBR Radio 1050.

Stanford (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) will be looking to get back on the winning track after a tough loss last Saturday to Notre Dame. The will be playing the pass-happy Washington State Cougars(2-4, 1-2 Pac-12) coached by Mike Leach. Leach is in his third year as head coach and took the Cougars to their first bowl game in 10 years last year. Leach also coached at Texas Tech and was very successful using the passing game and had the Red Raiders ranked nationally during his tenure there. The Cougars lost a wild game last week to call 60-59. The Cougars’ quarterback, Connor Halliday, passed for a national record of 734 yards and six touchdowns but they did not win as they missed an easy field goal and let the game slip away. So far this year, Halliday leads the country in yards passing(3052), touchdowns (26) and total offense(498.0 yards per game.)

The Stanford defense will certainly have to be on their toes to stop the passing game. Stanford leads the country in scoring defense (8.6 points per game) and ranks second in passing yards allowed (107.04)

It does not look like the Cardinal defense will have to worry about the Cougars’ running game and they will be concentrating on stopping Halliday and the passing game as Halliday is averaging 62 attempts per game. However, Halliday will call a running play when he feels the play will confuse the Stanford defense and to keep them honest.

It is not known at this time if Stanford’s quarterback,Kevin Hogan, will play Friday. Hogan was injured in the Notre Dame game and did not practice Monday. Hogan was limited in Tuesday’s practice and was expected to practice without limitations on Wednesday. Backup QB Evan Crower has been taking snaps with the first-team offense and will be ready if Hogan can’t go.

Notes:

Stanford is ranked first nationally in scoring defense and second in total defense(232 yards/game) and passing defense. Stanford has allowed just 43 points through five games. The defense allowed 36 and the other points came on an Stanford offensive fumble which was returned for a score.

Stanford has held opponents under 30 points in each of its past 28 games, the nation’s longest such streak. The Cardinal is 39-4 at Stanford Stadium since the final home game of 2007. Stanford is 8-0 following a loss under head coach David Shaw.

Stanford leads the series 38-25-1 and won the last meeting 55-17 last year.

The Cardinal has won the last six games in the series and has averaged 43 points per game during that span.

Should be an interesting game. Get there early as parking is going to be horrific due to the unusual 6pm start time Friday night.–

Stanford vs Notre Dame Preview

The Stanford Cardinal (3-1) Travels to South Bend, Indiana on Saturday October 4th to play the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.(4-0).The Irish are led by quarterback Everett Golson who is returning to play after not playing last year due to academic cheating. Golson said the cheating incident forced him to “grow up” and he was “humiliated” by his mistake. As a starter, Golson has a record of 14-1 and one of those wins came at the expense of Stanford when the Irish beat them 20-13. Notre Dame is ranked ninth in the nation while the Cardinal comes in ranked at fourteenth. Golson is a very mobile and resourceful quarterback and the Cardinal defense will be tested.

Stanford’s offense will have to improve its game if they want to beat the Irish. The Cardinal struggled to beat Washington last week They turned the ball over three times against the Huskies and they cannot

continue to hand the ball over if they expect to win as the Irish defense is probably the best defense the Cardinal will face so far this year. The Irish have allowed just ten points per game and they rank 17th nationally in takeaways with nine. Six interceptions and three fumble recoveries so far.

Stanford’s defense must stop Golson. The Irish do not have strong running game and if the defense comes through, The oddsmakers have made Stanford a slight favorite. Should be a close game with two stout defenses on the field. Can Kevin Hogan make the plays? Will the passing game be good? Will the Cardinal stop the giveaways? These questions will be answered in South Bend as the rivalry continues between Stanford and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Stanford vs Washington Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Stanford Cardinal (2-1 overall and 0-1 Pac-12) travels to Seattle to play the Washington Huskies Saturday afternoon. The Huskies are 4-0 under new coach Chris Petersen and will be playing it’s first Pac-12 game of the year against Stanford. Petersen coms to the Huskies from Boise State where he had phenomenal success with the Broncos. Under Petersen’s leadership, Boise State had a record of 92-12 and went to eight bowl games in his eight seasons there. Boise State’s biggest wig came in 2007 when they upset mighty Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Huskies , as mentioned above, have won the first four games of the year. They started the year with a trip to Honolulu where they barely squeaked by the University of Hawaii’s Rainbow Warriors 17-16. They played the next three games at Seattle where they beat Eastern Washington 59-52 in a shootout.

The University of Illinois came calling and they were trounced by the Huskies 44-19 and then last week, the Huskies spotted Georgia State a fourteen point lead but came roaring back scoring 45 unanswered points to win going away.

The key players on offense for the Huskies will be new quarterback, 6ft 4 inch sophomore,Cyler Miles and the Huskies will rely on Dwayne Washington and Lavon Coleman to be the running backs.. The Huskies also have a very talented wide receiver/kickoff in the person of one John Ross who averages 155 all purpose yards per game good for 15th in the nation and right behind Stanford’s Ty Montgomery who has 156 and is 13th nationally.

Washington’s defense is anchored by by 6ft 2 inch,339 pound senior Danny Shelton. Shelton leads the nation with seven sacks and his partner on the line is Hau’oli Kikaha who has six sacks to his name.

Other standouts are Shaq Thompson who scores two touchdowns against Illinois. One was on an interception and the other on a fumble recovery. Marcus Peters, from Oakland, is an outstanding cornerback.

Stanford will again be led by quarterback Kevin Hogan and Ty Montgomery on offense. The running backs are done by committee and coach Shaw will utilize Barry Sanders, Christian McCaffrey and Ricky Seale for maximum results. The Cardinal has a good receiving corps manned by stellar tight end Austin Hooper and Wide receivers Michael Rector, Francis Owusu and Devon Cajuste.

On defense, defensive ends Henry Anderson and Blake Luedens have performed well so far. Kevin Anderson and A.J.Tarpley have been outstanding for Stanford as has safety Jordan Richards.

It should be an exciting game. The Cardinal will be playing in a hostile environment and may have trouble with the noise level. The Cardinal need the win as a second loss in Pac-12 play could doom the possibility of a return to the Rose Bowl. The Huskies, who have not been to the Rose Bowl in 13 years, will be looking to extend their winning streak to five so far this year but no one really knows how good they are. The beat a Hawaii team that is now 1-3 on the season and the won by just one point.. They gave up 52 points to Eastern Washington and beat Georgia State by a wide margin but neither school is a football power. The did trounce Illinois and it was Illinois’ but their three wins came over schools that could not be considered powerhouses and they have yet to play a Big-10 opponent.

Who will win? No predictions here but it looks like an evenly matched game with a lot at stake for both clubs.

Stanford Rebounds, Defeats Army

by Jerry Feitelberg

Stanford rebounded with a win over the visiting West Point Black Knights win a 35-0 win at Stanford Stadium Saturday. Stanford’s defense was outstanding recording the second shutout of the season and has allowed just 13 points in the three games played so far this season. Unfortunately, the 13 points were scored by USC last week as they upset Stanford. Stanford’s offense had a tough time getting into the end zone against USC but today was a different story as the Cardinal scored five touchdowns in the win. Quarterback Kevin Hogan threw for four scores and Ty Montgomery ran one in for a touchdown.

The game summary follows below.

Stanford won the toss and elected to receive. The drive started on the Cardinal 25 yard line. Kevin Hogan drove the Cardinal 75 yards in nine plays for the score. The drive was a nice mix of runs and passes. Hogan completed a 9 yard pass to Austin Hooper, Kelsey Young had a 16 yard run and a key 10 yard grab byEric Cotton got the ball to the Army 23rd yard line. On the next play Hogan found Devon Cajuste all alone in the end zone for the score. The extra point was good and Stanford has a 7-0 led with 10:44 left in the quarter. From that point until just 1:30 left to play in the half it became a defensive struggle. Stanford moved the ball a lot better the Army but Army’s defense came up big and stopped Stanford. Stanford’s defense was strong as the allowed Army just 58 total yards in the half. The key play in the second quarter came late in the half when Army fumbled on their own fifteen yard line. The fumble was recovered by Kevin Anderson. On the first play, Hogan handed off to Ty Montgomery who ran it to the Army 4 yard line. Hogan ran it to the 2. Hogan’s pass to Cajuste was incomplete but they connected on the next play for the touchdown. Stanford ahead 14-0 at the half.

Stanford kicked off to Army to start the second half. The Cadets controlled the ball for almost nine minutes but had to punt. Stanford got the ball on the their own 2 yard line and then went 98 yards in nine plays for the their third touchdown of the game. Stanford ran the ball down to the Army ten yard line. Barry Sanders had three carries for 61 yards on the drive. Stanford ran the ball into the end zone but the play was nullified by a holding penalty. Hogan was sacked for a two yard loss but on the next play Kevin Hogan found Devon Cajuste in the end zone again for the touchdown. Cardinal has a 21-0 lead With 2:51 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Cardinal went 35 yards in 8 plays to take a 28 -0 lead. Army tried a fake punt

that was broken up by Patrick Skov at Army’s 35 yard line. Stanford went for the jugular and took it in for the score. The touchdown was scored by Ty Montgomery from the wildcat formation. 11:35 left to go in the game. Stanford scored again following an interception by linebacker A.J.Tarpley on Stanford’s 27 yard line. The Cardinal went 73 yards in 6 plays with the key play being a 32 yard touchdown pass from Kevin Hogan to Ty Montgomery for the score. 35-0 with 6:09 left. Time for Coach David Shaw to play the backups. The Army drove to the Stanford 2 yard line but the Stanford defense rose up and stopped the Cadets on fourth and goal. Final score 35-0 in favor of Stanford.

Game notes:

Through three games in 2014, Stanford’s tight ends have combined for 16 receptions. The same position group combined for 10 receptions for the entire 2013 season.

Stanford posted its second shutout of 2014. It is the 41st time in school history that the Cardinal has shut out multiple opponents, but just the second time since 1973.

Stanford has held opponents scoreless in the second quarter in all three games this year.

Stanford held Army to 3.5 yards/carry on Saturday. In the 2013 matchup between one of the nation’s top rushing defensive units against one of the nation’s best ground games, Stanford allowed 284 rushing yards on 61 carries (4.65 yards/carry). Army averaged nearly 370 yards per game (5.5 yards/carry) in 2012, and 312 yards (5.4 yards/carry) in 2013. Army rushed for 341 yards in its 2014 opener against Buffalo.Stanford is 8-0 following a loss under head coach David Shaw. The Cardinal has not lost consecutive games since midway through the 2009 season.

The Cardinal is 39-4 (.907) at Stanford Stadium since the final home game of 2007.

·Over the past four seasons, Stanford owns a 28-2 record at Stanford Stadium which includes an 11-2 clip against top 25 opponents.

Stanford is 12-0 in its last 12 home games against non-conference opponents. The last such loss came against Notre Dame in 2007.

Coach Shaw had this to say after the game today

COACH SHAW: I thought it was a good effort by our players.First and foremost, Lance Anderson did a phenomenal job on the defensive side. That is a tough thing in one week, which is really three days of practice. In three days of practice to get ready for this triple option, I thought it was phenomenal.

Give a lot of credit to Lance.Give a lot of credit to our older guys on defense. Some new starters, but a lot of these guys played a lot of football. They were at Army last year, and though some of this is a little different because it’s a new coaching staff, but the guys played well. They played the scheme extremely well. I thought Aziz Shittu played well, Blake Martinez played extremely well. Henry Anderson making tackles for loss and getting in there. And David Parry, because it starts up front defending the option, those guys played so well.

Secondary was very disappointing.Saw a bunch of passes by this group last week so we knew the big play was a possibility. And second, Duane Akina got the secondary ready. When they dropped back to throw it, everybody was covering deep. They hit some balls underneath, and that’s fine for us.Can’t say enough about what the defense did today, it was outstanding.

Offensively, we started fast.Scripted plays of the first drive was executed perfectly. We thought it was just a great drive. We had a lull in the middle there. Some things that weren’t quite clean.A lot of things we addressed and cleaned up again, and then started at the second quarter and got kind of back into it. Got in the third quarter and got back to the running game.

I thought Kelsey ran the ball well I thought Barry Sanders had a big game, did some nice things for us And Devon Cajuste, is just a tough guy to guard. He’s just under 6’4", and 227 pounds and he can run and jump. It’s such a great compliment to what that guy can do.Mike Rector can be explosive. We’ll continue to work on our tight ends and get them involved, but we’re trying to build a complete offense here.

Stanford has a bye next week then travels to Seattle to meet the Washington Huskies on September 27th.

Stanford vs Army Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Stanford Cardinal meets the Army Black Knights Saturday at Stanford Stadium. Coach David Shaw will have his team ready to resume its winning ways as they seek to rebound from last Saturday’s loss to USC. The Cardinal offense had multiple opportunities to win the game in the second half but USC’s defense rose to the occasion and kept Stanford at bay.

Army, under new head coach , Jeff Monken , beat Buffalo at Michie Stadium 47-39 to get their season off on the right foot. The Cadets led 28-3 midway through the third quarter and it looked like an easy win for the Cadets but Buffalo refused to quit. Buffalo scored with 4:17 left to play in the third quarter to make it a 28-10 game but Army answered with a touchdown to maintain a 21 point lead. Army then

recovered an onside kickand scored a touchdown. Buffalo kept coming back but Army held on to win 47-39.

This will be the twelfth meeting all-time between the two teams with Stanford holding a slim 6 to 5 margin. The Cardinal has a 3-2 record at home and is 3-3 at Army. The Cardinal and Army played last year at West Point and it was not a cakewalk for Stanford. The Cardinal won 34-20 but it was not easy.

Stanford had its hands full with Army’s triple-option offense. The Cardinal led by seven at the half and 27-13 late in the third quarter. The most critical play came in the third quarter. Trailing 20-13 and poised to tie the game,Army quarterback Angel Santiago botched a third-down handoff and Stanford recovered the fumble. The Cardinal scored to increase the lead to 27-13. The Cardinal secured the win on Tyler Gaffney’s one yard TD run.

It should be a good game as Army can not be counted as a pushover. The Cardinal must get their offense going again and should be strong on defense, Army ,while known from last year, has a new coach and he may have a few new wrinkles up his sleeve and will be looking for ways to upset Stanford.

Game time is at 2pm at Stanford Stadium

USC upsets the Stanford Cardinal

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Stanford Cardinal lost the opening game of the Pac-12 season to the University of Southern California Saturday at Stanford Stadium by a score of 13-10. It snapped a seventeen game home winning streak that was the longest in the nation. The Stanford defense played well as they held the SC offense to just 13 points. They did their job but the offense just couldn’t cash in on their opportunities and mistakes killed the Cardinal. Two many penalties and miscues doomed them and it resulted in the first loss of the season for Stanford.

The SC Trojans kicked off to Stanford and the Cardinal held the ball for six minutes and were moving well but the drive was stymied by three penalties on the offensive line and an attempted field goal went wide. The Trojans then went 68 yards in 12 plays to take an early 7-0 lead. Javorious “Buck” Allen had 2 key runs to help set up the TD. Justin Davis scored the touchdown. Stanford was on the move near the end of the first period but a bad snap from center killed the drive.

The Cardinal tied the game in the second quarter on an eleven play, 77 yard drive. Patrick Skov scored the touchdown for the Cardinal. Stanford was on the march again near the end of the second quarter but two penalties killed Stanford’s chance for a touchdown and they had to settle for a field goal to give them a 10-7 lead at halftime.

Stanford had chances in the third quarter as the Cardinal had consecutive drives inside the USC 10-yard line and fumbled in Trojan territory on the next series. Stanford had its chances in the fourth quarter, too. Kevin Hogan passed to a wide-open Austin Hooper in the end zone for an apparent 23 yard touchdown but the score was nullified by a Stanford chop block penalty.

The Trojans tied the game in the third period on a field goal and won it 2:30 left on a career high 53 yard field goal by Andre Heidari. Final score USC wins 13-10.

After the game this is what coach David Shaw had to say “So, bottom line, you don’t take advantage of opportunities, you lose games to good football teams. I said it earlier in the week and it rings true. You give a team like that so many opportunities, they’re going to take advantage. They’ve got good personnel. They’re good on offense, they’re good in the kicking game.

We had so many opportunities to win this football game. I give them credit, they made the plays and we didn’t. They made the calls and we didn’t.To miss two field goals and get turned away inside the five yard line, to go from a field goal position backed up to a punt position.Coaches and players, that’s everybody, which is veiled to say that’s me, that’s me.

My passion is for football of course, but individually, inside of football, it’s red zone and third down. We were solid on third down and not good enough in the red zone. When you’re not good enough in the red zone, you lose games. You got to make field goals, you got to take advantage of field position. We just did not. This is what happens. The charge is to our guys, our coaches and players, to be better. Not to scrap what we’ve done, not at all, but to be better than we were today. We have a lot of good football teams coming down the road that we got to try to find a way to beat.’

Stanford plays its third home game in a row next week as the Army pays a visit. Game time at Stanford Stadium will be at 2pm.

Stanford vs USC Preview

by Jerry Feitelberg

The number 11 nationally ranked Stanford Cardinal opens the 2014 Pac-12 campaign on Saturday against the number 14 ranked University of Southern California Trojans. The game will be televised nationally on ABC at 12:30 pm from Stanford Stadium.

The game should be a barnburner as both teams started the season last week by routing their opponents. USC beat Fresno State 52-13 and the Cardinal demolished UC Davis 45-0.

The Trojans had a tumultuous 2013 season. They fired head coach Lane Kiffin on September 29th and replaced him with Ed Orgeron. Kiffin had a record of 3-2 at the time of his firing. Orgeron’s Trojans went 7-2 the rest of the way and their biggest win of the year came when Trojans upset the Cardinal in Los Angeles. The Trojans named Steve Sarkisian as their new head coach before the Las Vegas Bowl was to played and coach Orgeron resigned. SC nonetheless, went to the Las Vegas bowl and defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs. Interesting to note that SC’s last two games were against Fresno State and they beat them each time. The Cardinal won the Pac-12 championship and went to the Rose Bowl for the second consecutive year but lost to Michigan State.

The Trojans offensively are led by quarterback Cody Kessler. The Trojan uptempo offense ran 105 plays in the Fresno State game , racking up 37 first downs and 701 total yards. Coach Sarkisian said that it was the best game of Kessler’s career. The Trojans are loaded at wide receiver with Nelson Aghholor, who had 5 catches for 57 yards last week and JuJu Smith. Smith had 4 receptions good for 123 yards including receptions of 43 and 54 yards. Javorius Allen is the main running back and Bryce Dixon is the fullback.

Stanford, on the other hand, is a team that does not use an uptempo offense. Stanford prefers to grind it out as they very disciplined and well coached. SC will have their work cut out for them if they are to beat the Cardinal. Stanford is led by senior quarterback Kevin Hogan. Hogan has an experienced corps of wide receivers including Ty Montgomery and Devon Cajuste. Christian McCaffrey played an important role in the win over UC Davis and should see action on Saturday. The Cardinal will attack the weakness of the Trojan defense.

The Cardinal’s strength the last two or three season has been part of Stanford’s success. The defense is led by defensive end Henry Armstrong and linebacker A.J.Tarpley. The defense’s job will be to slow down the Trojan Express.

Should be a great game. Stanford, however, is listed as the favorite.

Stanford Routs UC Davis

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Stanford Cardinal opened their 2014 football season going against the UC Davis Aggies. The Cardinal kicked off to the Aggies, The Aggies could do nothing as the Cardinal totally dominated the game and blew out the Aggie 45-0. The Cardinal dominated all facets of the game. Offense was clicking, defense was fantastic and special teams came up big time for Stanford. The Aggies never entered Stanford territory.

Stanford took an early7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cardinal kicked off to the Aggies from UC Davis. The Stanford defense asserted themselves and forced the Aggies to kick after a three and out. The Aggies punted to Ty Montgomery who took the ball on his own forty yard line and took it to the house for the score, Williamson kicked the extra point. The score came with just 2:53 played. Stanford continued its dominance on defense forcing the Aggies to punt again. Stanford went on 12 play 67 yard drive to make it a 14-0 game. Kevin Hogan made key completions to Ty Montgomery and Francis Owusu. Hogan scored the TD from the one yard line and the extra point was good. 14-0 Cardinal at the end of one quarter of play.

Stanford kept the pressure on pinning the Aggies down deep in their own territory. The Aggies punted

but it ended up on their own 40 yard line. On the very first play from scrimmage, Kevin Hogan found wide receiver Michael Rector on about the five yard line and Rector took it in for the score. Kick was good and the Cardinal now has a 21-0 lead with 9:10 left in the half.

The Cardinal again kept the Aggies deep in their own end again forcing them to punt. The Cardinal got the ball on their own 46 yard yard. Hogan connected with Christian McCaffrey who was wide open and McCaffrey ran it nto the end zone for the touchdown. The Cardinal now has a commanding 28-0 lead.

Ty Montgomery scored his second touchdown of the game with 1:19 left in the half. It was a 44 yard

pass play for the score and it was a 77 yard drive. The Aggies took the ensuing kickoff to the 23rd yard line but they fumbled the ball and Stanford recovered on the 36. The Cardinal ran the ball down to the 15 yard line. Jordan Williamson kicked a 32 yard field goal to end the half with Stanford holding a 38-0

lead against the game but overmatched UC Davis Aggie team.

Stats for the first half. Stanford had 274 yards total offense. Hogan threw for 204 yards and had one interception. UCD quarterback London Lacy had a miserable first half . He went six for eleven good for 23 yards and just 58 yards total offense for the Aggies.

Kevin Hogan started the second half but he was replaced by Evan Crower with 11:51 left in the third period. Crower drove the Cardinal to the 20 yard line but the drive stalled. Willimson attempted a 37 yard field goal but the kick was no good. There was no scoring in the third quarter. The big plays of the quarter came when Noor Davis intercepted a London Lacy pass on the Aggie 17 yard line but the Cardinal fumbled on the next play and the aggies recovered on the two yard line. The Cardinal held the ball for 9:19 minutes in the period. Just 15 minutes left in the game and we can all go home.

In the fourth quarter, the big play so far was a 41 yard punt return by Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey initially fumbled but recovered to race down to the Aggie 13 yrd yard line. On the very first play of the drive, Evan Crower hit tight end Austin Hooper for the touchdown . The extra point is good and the Cardinal now lead 45-0 with 8:22 left in the game. Stanford has inserted second and third string players on defense at this point in the game. Ryans Burns is in at quarterback relacing Evan Crower.

On his first play, Burns ran 20 yards for a first down but could no more and the Cardinal had to punt.

Final score Stanford wins 45-0.

After the game, Ty Montgomery answered a question this way. We saw you line up in a lot of different positions, field punts for the first time. How much fun is it to get all over the field and show off your versatility a little bit?

TY MONTGOMERY:It’s fun to be out there, be able to play.I enjoy stepping on the field no matter what position I’m in, just playing with these guys on the team.

Q.Is it different or what would you say was the difference between returning punts and returning kickoffs?

TY MONTGOMERY: The only difference in my mind is you don’t have the ability to fair catch a kickoff return. But it’s the same thing, ten guys block, find the seam and hit it.

Kevin Hogan said this about the offense” I thought they did a good job. All their calls were great and their protection was good. I think the only time I got sacked was I was holding the ball too long and they had good coverage downfield.

But as a whole, they were great.Great with their protection. Great with their running game I thought they gelled well. And I think that they’re still hungry. And I know they can get better. But today I thought they did a good job.”
