That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Guardians Cecconi loses no hit bid in eighth; Phils Turner expected back for post season from hamstring injury; plus more

Cleveland Guardians pitcher Slade Cecconi tips his cap to the Cleveland crowd after nearly throwing a no hitter against the Kansas City Royals at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Mon Sep 8, 2025 (Chronicle-Telegram Cleveland photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1  Monday night Cleveland Guardian pitcher Slade Cecconi went into the eighth inning against the Kansas City Royals pitching a no hitter but Royals lead off hitter Michael Massey hit a lead off single and broke up Cecconi’s no hit bit which could have been the first one of the season. It also would have ended Cleveland’s four decade long wait for a no hitter but the wait continues.

#2 Philadelphia Phillies Trea Turner who is out with a strained hamstring for the rest of the season is expected back for post season in October. Phils manager Rob Thomson that Turner’s MRI results are better than expected and that the strain is not as bad as expected. Turner is in the third year of his 11 year $300 million contract.

#3 Milwaukee Brewers Christian Yelich is back in the line up on Monday night after he was scratched out of the line up and missed five game due to lower back pain. Yelich on Monday got one hit in four at bats in the Brewers 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers. Yelich this season has played in 132 of the Brewers 144 games hitting .268 with 27 home runs and 92 RBIs.

#4 The Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe is on the seven day concussion IL after getting hit in the head by the Sacramento A’s Jacob Wilson’s backswing. The Angels Jo Adell was out of the line up due vertigo. O’Hoppe was removed after being hit in the head in Sunday’s game.

#5 Times are getting rough for the A’s after taking the first two games from the Angels on Friday and Saturday and then turning around and losing to the Angels on Sunday and getting crushed by the Boston Red Sox on Monday night 7-0 at Sutter Health Park. The hopes of getting out of the cellar are dimming for Sacramento.

Headline Sports with Michael Roberson: Cora-Red Sox working on contract extension; Brew Crew’s Yelich on 10 day IL plus more news

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora and the Red Sox are looking to work out a contract extension for the next three seasons. (AP News file)

On Headline Sports with Michael Roberson:

#1 Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora and the Red Sox are in negotiations for a contract extension that would give him an extra three years at $21.75 million. The Sox as of Tuesday are 54-46 and are one game back of the Kansas City Royals for the final wild card spot.

#2 Michael you cover the Milwaukee Brewers pretty closely and the Brewers have place Christian Yelich on the ten day IL due back inflammation. Yelich is schedule to see a specialist Thursday to figure out what to do next. Yelich’s back had been bothering him in recent weeks. You saw him at the All Star game but after the break is now on the IL.

#3 It’s been said that the New York Yankees Juan Soto and Aaron Judge are the best one two punch since Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. That said the Yankees have struggled and are 10-21 since the start of the season when the Yanks were 50-22.

#4 Turning to the NCAA you probably aren’t surprised that after realignment some schools would not be all too please. In the ACC, Commissioner Jim Phillips said he would fight lawsuits filed by Clemson and Florida State University. The lawsuits are over the schools withdrawal penalty and grant of rights and gets uglier as the NCAA has filed a countersuit. Phillips said the NCAA is fighting for the protection of league and it’s members and that both Clemson and FSU both signed off for the grant of rights.

#5 Tuesday the Cal Bears and Stanford Cardinal made their ACC Media Day appearances. Stanford football head coach Troy Taylor said that the Cardinal need to adapt quickly or they will not be relevant this upcoming season. Taylor as well as the ACC schools are trying to make the adjustment to the realignment and division switches that Taylor said was at first shocking to see such a traditional conference like the Pac 10 just suddenly go away.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Giants end win streak at four as they drop final game to Brewers 5-3

Milwaukee Brewers’ Jesus Aguilar, right, celebrates with third base coach Ed Sedar after hitting a solo home run against the San Francisco Giants during the sixth inning of a baseball game in San Francisco, Sunday, June 16, 2019.

On the Giants podcast with Morris:

#1 For the Milwaukee Brewers, it was two hits each for Christian Yelich, Yasmani Grandal, Marcus Thames and Travis Shaw, whose contributions helped the Brewers get a two-run win over their hosts, the San Francisco Giants, at Oracle Park on Sunday to avoid getting swept in three games.

#2 The Giants, on the other hand, snapped a four-game winning streak with the 5-3 loss. The Giants beat the San Diego Padres in two games and took the first two games from the Brewers to start the series.

#3 Jeff Samardzija struggled to hold back the Brewers, who scored four runs in five innings and nine hits off Samardzija, and got the loss.

#4 Samardzija hit for a single to score Kevin Pillar that tied up the game, but later it would be for not, as the Brewers would come back and win it by two runs.

#5 The Giants head for Los Angeles and will start Tyler Beede (0-2, 8.06 ERA) who will be matched up against the Dodgers’ Kenta Maeda (7-3, 3.89 ERA).
