Oakland’s Rally Falls Short Losing to Chicago 6-2

Oakland A’s Brent Rooker is greeted by teammates after slugging a home run in the top of the eighth inning at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago in the third game of this four game series on Sat Aug 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

The Oakland A’s (38-91) were riding high going into Saturday’s game three against the Chicago White Sox (50-79) but came away disappointed 6-2 at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago. They couldn’t get a third win this game Saturday and are in front in this four game series 2-1.

It was an awful start for Oakland pitcher JP Sears. He has been struggling for awhile now and the struggles continued in this game. He was not executing his pitches. He went six innings and gave up nine hits and six runs.

The White Sox got things going early scoring a single run in the first inning and followed it up with a single run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Luis Robert Jr. scored Chicago’s first run which was followed by a home run off the bat of Lenyn Sosa.

The White Sox had a second home run in the third inning, a three-run homer from Yoan Moncada taking a 5-0 lead. They would score another run in the fifth inning and with a 6-0 lead it was all White Sox in this game so far. The A’s only had two hits through seven innings.

Oakland would finally get up on the board in the eighth inning thanks to a fielding error from Moncada. Esteury Ruiz scored on that error and so with only one out and two on base Oakland had opportunity to score a few more runs and get a rally going for the A’s.

Oakland was able to bring home another run. Jonah Bride singled Brent Rooker home for a second run and the A’s trailed 6-2 going into the bottom of the eighth.

The White Sox went three up and three out in the eighth and the A’s were looking to finish with a flurry in the ninth inning. Oakland actually went out with a whimper in the final inning but still has the chance to win the series Sunday.

A’s post game notes: The A’s had won game one of the series 8-5 Thursday night and followed that game up Friday night with an offensively brilliant game winning 12-4. Nick Allen had an amazing game in the second game of the series driving in five runs.

Oakland will wrap up the series tomorrow with Paul Blackburn on the mound with a 3-3 win/loss record and a 4.00 ERA. The White Sox will send Mike Clevinger with a 5-6 win/loss record and a 3.47 ERA.

The A’s will be looking to get back the energy they had in the first two games of this series. They will be needing to get their bats going; they will certainly need more than the four hits that they got in Saturday’s game.

Headline Sports podcast with Stephen Ruderman: San Francisco future home of Oakland A’s?; Two women survive shooting at White Sox-A’s game in Chicago; plus NFL news

The Oakland A’s could make Oracle Park in San Francisco their 2025 home and share it with the San Francisco Giants until their new park is built in Las Vegas in 2028 (SF Travel photo)

On Headline Sports podcast with Stephen Ruderman:

#1 Stephen, the Oakland A’s have presented the idea of working three different locations during the 2025 season after they finish their lease in 2024 at the Oakland Coliseum they are considering their minor league team the Las Vegas Aviators park, the Coliseum or Oracle Park home of the San Francisco Giants

#2 A’s president David Kaval said the final decision rests with MLB and the Commissioners office where the A’s would land in 2025 but the A’s could end up playing in either one of those locations or split up their home dates in all three locations.

#3 Shooting at White Sox Park on Friday night in the South Side of Chicago, the shooting that took place a mile away from Guarantee Rate Field that struck two women fans at the A’s and White Sox game. The two ladies were taken to Chicago University Medical Center for medical treatment and did not sustain life threatening injuries and it was reported they were shot in the leg the other woman was grazed in abdomen. The White Sox who had a concert scheduled at the end of the game which was canceled due to technical difficulties.

#4 Turning to the NFL and the Trey Lance trade to the Dallas Cowboys. Lance had a rough first game against the Las Vegas Raiders in week one of pre season he was sacked three times in four possessions and showed improvement against the Denver Broncos in week two of pre season but was traded none the less by the Niners in week three. According the head coach Kyle Shanahan Lance didn’t work out. Did he or did he not have anything left in the tank?

#5 Ironically Lance will face the Raiders a second time tonight this time as a Dallas Cowboy as the Cowboys host the Raiders at AT&T Stadium. Lance who was traded on Friday night will face the Raiders for a second time in pre season and hopes that the results will be better than the first time.

A’s Nick Allen & Company Top White Sox 12-4

Oakland A’s Nick Allen had a night at the plate with a home run and five runs driven in against the Chicago White Sox at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago on Friday, August 25, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

While it has not been the best of seasons for the Oakland A’s (38-91), the current series against the White Sox (50-79) has been a terrific one for both the team and their fans as the A’s captured their second straight win against the White Sox clobbering Chicago 12-4 Friday night.

After beating Chicago Thursday night 8-5, Oakland really poured it on in game two of the series. Just watching these players having the time of their lives was nice to see but doing it on the road in Chicago has been something really special.

What we saw in game two was an all out effort from each and every player offensively and defensively. Neither team scored in the first inning. The A’s had a terrific second inning scoring five runs setting the tempo for this game. Lawrence Butler singled Brent Rooker home for the first run of the game.

Oakland would go on to score four more times. Nick Allen singled Tony Kemp home, followed by another single from Ryan Noda that brought in two runs and closing out the top of the second inning Zach Gelof doubled for the 5-0 A’s lead. The White Sox Lenyn Sosa hit a two-run home run and Chicago was on the board 5-2.

The White Sox got a little closer in the third inning 5-3 scoring a single run when Yoan Moncada doubled bringing Andrew Benintendi home.

Along came the fourth inning and the Allen extravaganza got underway. He singled Jonah Bride home. In the fifth inning it was Allen again with another single that brought two runners home; Kemp and Shea Langliers both scored for a 8-3 Oakland lead. The A’s would tack one more run on for a 9-3 lead. Noda grounded into a fielder’s choice and Bride scored.

Chicago kept plugging away and in the fifth inning Eloy Jimenez homered to left center, a solo shot for a 9-4 Oakland lead. The A’s did not take their foot off the pedal for the rest of the game with some outstanding offense.

The A’s got another run in the sixth inning for a 10-4 lead. Allen was not finished. He homered in the seventh inning, a solo shot which capped off an incredible evening. He drove in a career-high five runs giving the A’s their fourth win in five games.

Noda finished off the evening with Oakland’s second home run of the game also in the seventh inning. The A’s had 15 hits in the game leaving few runners stranded. This was the sixth time this season that the A’s had hit back-to-back home runs.

Besides the offense, the A’s showed off some stellar defense. Esteury Ruiz really hustled in the outfield making some impressive diving catches. He did not have a great offensive game but the defense he show-cased was equally important in this win.

The teams will meet in game three of this series Saturday evening. Oakland will be looking for a third win that will ensure a series win. JP Sears will take the mound after a rough outing in his last appearance against Baltimore in a forgettable loss 12-1.

Sears needs to better his 2-10 win/loss record and a great start would be a third win in this series for his team. The White Sox will send Touki Toussaint with a 1-6 win/loss record and a 5.30 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: A’s Langeliers hot bat smashes two homers and Sox

Oakland Athletics’ Shea Langeliers hits a two-run home run off Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jesse Scholtens during the fourth inning at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago on Thu Aug 24, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Oakland A’s catcher Shea Langeliers made good contact against Chicago White Sox pitching with two home runs in the A’s 8-5 win at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago’s South side.

#2 The White Sox Luis Robert Jr snagged a fly ball that was certain to clear the fence hit by the A’s Brent Rooker in the top of the fourth inning. Despite the catch the A’s hung for the three run win.

#3 Things had been tough for both the A’s and White Sox, the White Sox had infielder Tim Anderson out on a suspension for fighting and has returned, the clubhouse atmosphere had been not so loose and the Sox have lost seven of their last ten games.

#4 The A’s have had their share of problems narrowly avoiding getting swept on their last road trip winning the last game in St Louis and getting swept by Baltimore upon returning to Oakland. The A’s snapped out of it taking two out of three from Kansas City to conclude their last homestand.

#5 The A’s and Sox go at it again starting for the A’s Zach Neal (0-0 ERA 8.25) going for the White Sox Dylan Cease (5-6 ERA 4.50) a 5:10pm PT first pitch.

Oakland A’s podcast with Daniel Dullum: MLB teams relocation threats are to get local tax money for improvements

Camden Yards in Baltimore, John Angelos and family who own the Baltimore Orioles want improvements on the ballpark. They were offered $600 million from the state of Maryland and the Angelos wants more they want to build a downtown complex for hotels, retail, offices, and to own the land if not the team will relocate possibly to Nashville (AP file photo)

On the A’s podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, there are now seven MLB clubs who are interested in relocating for various reasons how much of a role did A’s owner John Fisher play in opening the door to relocation in his case Las Vegas and now MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred can capitalize on mass taxpayer municipalities who will feel like hostages to try and keep their teams.

#2 All of sudden the idea of relocating might not be half a bad idea they could get expansion money out of it or best yet they can get state and local tax money to do the relocation and best yet baseball doesn’t have to worry about the relocation fees.

#3 Daniel, tell us about the teams who are interested in moving unless their local government comes up with tax payer money for stadium improvements or to pay for new stadiums are Tampa Bay, Arizona, Milwaukee, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore, Kansas City and the Los Angeles Angels.

#4 It was stated the national past time is not designed to be there for generations of fans, loyal fans, long time season ticket holders it’s there for the mean green almighty dollar and to serve the MLB owners including Fisher.

#5 At Howard Terminal where the A’s originally were going to try and move to before A’s team president David Kaval said the A’s had a binding agreement in Vegas. The A’s are suing longtime Howard Terminal tenant Schnitzer Steel for toxic waste. There is also an investigation into why Schnitzer has had fires at their plant between 2018-2020, there have been five fires involving hazardous materials at the plant. Schnitzer had a most recent fire last Wed Aug 16th.

It was bombs away as A’s homer five times to beat White Sox 8-5

Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. robs Oakland Athletics’ Brent Rooker of a home run during the fourth inning  at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago on Thu Aug 24, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s won a slugfest Thursday night as they downed the Chicago White Sox 8-5 at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. The A’s won for the third time in their last four games. The A’s hope the turmoil in Chicago will help them get a couple of wins in the Windy City this weekend.

The White Sox, expected to win the AL Central crown, have been floundering this season. The Sox fired team president Ken Williams and General Manager Rick Hahn. Skipper Pedro Grifol may be the next to be fired.

The A’s sent lefty Ken Waldichuk to the hill to face the Sox. Waldichuk did well for the first four innings. His only mistake in those innings was serving up a gopher ball to the second batter he faced, Andrew Benintendi. It was Benintendi’s fourth dinger of the year. The rest of the game summary follows below.

The A’s put three on the board in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. With one out, Seth Brown singled to get the rally started. Luis Robert snagged Brent Rooker’s drive to centerfield as the ball was headed over the wall.

Rooker had flown out to deep left field in his first at-bat. Left fielder Tony Kemp doubles to send Brown to third. A’s catcher Shea Langeliers continued his hot homer streak by blasting a line drive over the fence in left field.

The White Sox scored four times in the bottom of the fifth. Former Oakland A’s shortstop Elvis Andrus led off the frame with his fifth bomb of the year. Waldichuk retired Trayce Thompson for the first out. On the next play, Waldichuk threw the ball past first base.

The batter, Sox catcher Korey Lee, motored to the second base. Waldichuk struck out Tim Anderson for the second out. Andrew Benintendi singled to drive in his second run of the game.

Waldichuk now had to deal with the Sox’s best hitter, Luis Robert. Robert led the Sox with 33 homers. He now has 34. Robert’s home run gave the Sox a 5-3 lead after five innings.

The A’s homered twice in the sixth inning to send White Sox starter Jesse Scholtens to the showers. With one out, Brent Rooker, denied in his first two at-bats, homered for the 22nd time this year. Schotens retired Tony Kemp for the second out. The next hitter, Shea Langeliers, homered for the second time to tie the game 5-5.

The A’s added two runs in the top of the seventh. With two out, Ryan Noda singled and then stole second. The A’s sensational rookie second baseman, Zack Gelof, homered for the tenth time this season. The A’s led 7-5

It was now up to the A’s bullpen to preserve the win. Before we get to what the bullpen did, the A’s added another run in the top of the eight. Tony Kemp hit a solo homer to give the A’s a three-run cushion midway through the eighth,

The A’s bullpen allowed the White Sox four hits and kept them scoreless in the last four innings of the game. Lucas Erceg, Danny Jimenez, Spencer Patton, Kirby Snead, and Trevor May came through for the A’s. Oakland won the first game of the four-game series 8-5.

Game Notes: With the win, the A’s are now 37-91. The White Sox dropped to 50-78.

The line score for Oakland was eight runs, nine hits, and one error. Ken Waldichuk worked five innings and allowed eight hits and five runs. The White Sox hit three home runs off of Waldichuk’s offerings. Lucas Erceg was the winning pitcher.

The line score for Chicago was five runs, 12 hits, and one error.

The A’s hit five home runs in the game. Tony Kemp had a double and a home run. Shea Langeliers had two dingers and four RBIs. Brent Rooker hit his 22nd of the year. He was robbed by Luis Robert earlier in the game. Two other drives were very long outs. He seems to be back in the groove.

Game two of the series will be played Friday night. The A’s starter will be Zach Neal (0-0 ERA 8.25). Neal probably will be an opener. The White Sox will counter with Dylan Cease (5-6 ERA 4.50). The game will start at 5:10 p.m.

There was a sparse crowd 13,247 at the park on Chicago’s southside. Reports surfaced that the White Sox are not happy with their park. Reports say the team is looking at relocating to Nashville. The White Sox, for years, have been the second banana in the Windy City. The fans love the Cubs, who went 108 years before winning a World Series Championship. The Cubs can do no wrong. It would be sad for the White Sox fans to lose their team.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: A review of A’s last homestand; A’s open series in Detroit tonight

Connor Capel of the Oakland A’s (21) strikes out in the bottom of the sixth against the New York Yankees at the Oakland Coliseum on Thu Jun 30, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Well, the Yankees found their offense again on Thursday as they erupted in the sixth inning to score eight times to break open the game and coast to an easy 10-4 win over the hapless A’s.

#2 A’s starter, lefty Hogan Harris, was pitching relatively well heading into the sixth. Harris had held the Yankees to just two runs in his first five innings.

#3 The A’s scored one in the first, two in the third, and led 3-2 heading into the fateful sixth inning. The Yankees sent 13 men to the plate in the sixth, scoring eight times.

#4The A’s have lost 12 of the last 14 games played. Their record is now a dismal 21-62. The Yankees improved to 45-36.

#5 The Chicago White Sox (36-47) and A’s open up a three game series starting tonight at the Oakland Coliseum. The Sox have not announced a starter as of yet and the A’s will go with Luis Medina (1-7 ERA 6.84) a 6:40pm first pitch.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Medina gets win and run support against White Sox at Coliseum

Aledmys Diaz (12) the Oakland A’s shortstop throws to first base after forcing the Chicago White Sox Zach Remillard (left) at second base at the Oakland Coliseum on Fri Jun 30, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Even though the Sox got a run on A’s starter Luis Medina in the first inning, the rest of his outing was a shutout where even when Chicago would load the bases, Medina would escape the inning and still have the calmness and confidence to keep going.

#2 On the other side of the coin for the A’s, five innings resulted in five runs. In the second inning Oakland put up four of those five runs.

#3 Jace Peterson hit a sac fly to left field and Aledmys Diaz scored off that to take the lead, 2-1. A Tony Kemp triple would then score Langeliers, 3-1 and then finally Esteury Ruiz hit a sac fly that scored Kemp, 4-1.

#4 It was a bullpen game for the A’s from the sixth inning to the end and they held the White Sox off, but Chicago tried to make it interesting with three runs, including a solo home run by Luis Robert Jr.

#5 Saturday afternoon the White Sox will start Dylan Cease (3-3 ERA 4.04) the A’s have yet to determine a starter. A 1:07pm PT first pitch at the Oakland Coliseum.

OAKLAND–On Friday, James Kaprielian was the A’s announced starting pitcher for this Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Yesterday, James Kaprielian also was placed on the 15 day injured list.

That’s at least partially why Kyle Muller took the mound for the at least current home team on this hot and hazy afternoon, during which the Athletics squeaked past the visitors, 7-6, in 10 innings. The haze burned off, but the heat remained. If the double play is a pitcher’s best friend, heat in the Coliseum is a pitcher’s nightmare.

Muller, the Atlanta Braves’ second round draft choice in 2016, was the A’s opening day pitcher this season and after three starts could boast a record of 0-0, 2.53 over 15-2/3 innings with a WHIP of 1.18. It was all downhill after that, and on May 23rd the A’s optioned Muller to Las Vegas in the batter friendly PCL, where he went 1-2, 6.59 before the A’s called up the 25 year old southpaw to start for them this afternoon.

Two double plays in five innings showed that Muller’s best friend didn’t desert him, but his stint on the mound, if not a nightmare, wasn’t a pleasant dream. He wasn’t sharp and allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits, one a homer, and four walks. He threw 86 pitches, 54 for strikes, and left trailing, 3-2. He escaped with a no decision and lowered his ERA to 7.79.

For their part, the Chisox went with 27 year old righty Dylan Crease, who came into today with a 3-3, 4.04 mark. In his last nine starts, however, he had gone 1-1, 2.82, with an opponents’ BA of .203. This, with a team that had a season record of 36-48. He toed the rubber hoping to notch his 40th career victory.

He failed in that attempt, leaving with the score tied and a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth. In 5-1/3 innings, he allowed three run, all earned, on six hits and three bases on balls. He struck out five batters. His pitch count reached 87, 54 of which were considered strikes. Like Muller, he got a no decision. His record now stands at 3-3, 4.10.

The green and gold got off to an early lead. Tony Kemp sent a lead off liner that bounced once before hitting the right center field wall between the Coca Cola ad and the line under the State Farm sign that separates balls in play from home runs. JJ Bleday’s sac fly to deep center brought him home.

The South Siders lost no time in erasing that deficit. Eloy Jiménez led off by lifting a 3-1, 88.9mph slider way back into left field, landing 433 feet from home. It was his 11th home run and 35th RBI of the year. Chicago sent seven men to the plate before that frame ended with the score tied at one.

They didn’t stop there. Tim Andersson’s lead off single to left center in the top of the third set the stage for two additional tallies when he and Luis Robert, Jr., who had followed. him with a single to right, were driven in by a single by Jiménez and Andrew Vaughn’s force out, respectively. The Pale Hose now were ahead, 3-1.

The A’s didn’t get another hit after Kemp’s lead off triple until Jordan Díaz and Tyler Wade opened the home half of the fifth with a pair of infield singles. Esteury Ruíz tried to sacrifice them up a base each, but Crease’s throw beat Díaz to third for a force out. Kemp flew out to center, advancing Wade to third.

JJ Bleday hit a hard liner that Zach Remillard made a great dive for but couldn’t hold on to, and Ward scored from third. We went into the sixth with the Chisox ahead, 3-2 and Austin Pruitt on the mound for the Athletics. He set the Chicagoans down in order, as did Lucas Erceg in the seventh.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Jace Peterson doubled to right center and scored on Noda’s two bagger to left center, tying the score at three and sending Crease to the showers, replaced by Gregory Santos. The reliever walked Díaz and surrendered a single to Wade that loaded the bases. Ruíz took. a called third strike for the second out. Then Kemp grounded out to second, ending the threat

Keynan Middleton retired the first two batters he faced in the home half of the seventh, but Seth Brown deposited a slider over the 367 foot sign in right, a shot that travelled 383 feet and Brown’s seventh homer and 20th RBI. Oh, yes, it also put the A’s up, 4-3.

But nothing’s easy in this vale of tears called the Oakland Coliseum. In the top of the eighth with Erceg back on the mound Robert smacked leadoff double to right center, and Jiménez walked. Vaughn was hit by a pitch while swinging at it for strike three and was ruled out after a lengthy rules check. Jake Burger went down swinging the normal way. Carlos Pérez pinch hit for Seby Zavala and line a double down the left field line that scored Frazier and sent Grandal to third.

That brought Sam Long to the mound for Oakland. He granted an intentional walk to Remillard to load the bases and an unintentional one to Benintendi that plated Grandal. Anderson hit a drive into the left field seats that had him circling the bases, but the play was reviewed, and the shot was called foul. Anderson then flew out to right, and the inning ended with the score 6-4, Chicago..

Joe Kelly was the pale hose pitcher in the home eighth. He walked Noda before fanning Díaz and Wade. Ruíz then dropped a double into just fair territory in right; Noda stopped his advance at third. He scored on a balk with Kemp aa the plate. Kemp’s single to first drove in Ruíz, who also had moved up on the balk. Bleday then hit a grounder that Remillard couldn’t handle at second. Pinch hitting Conner Capel flew out to end the inning in what now was a 6-6 tie.

Trevor May was called on to halt the White Sox in the top of the ninth. Robert singled to left. Jiménez popped out. Vaughn was hit by a pitch. Robert was caught trying to steal second, May to Kemp to Peterson. Chicago challenged the call, but it was confirmed. May struck Burger out to preserve the tie.

Reynaldo López was assigned the task of preservation for Chicago in the Oakland ninth. Although he allowed a walk and a single he succeeded.

Shitaro Fujinami faced Grandal with Burger the zombie runner at second as we went into extra innings. He retired Grandal and the Sox’ Carlos Pérez before plunking Remillard. Then Benintendi whiffed, and the A’s gained the enormous advantage of starting their half of the 10th with Wade at second and needing only one run to. win.

Kendall Graveman was on the mound. He struck out Ruíz on a foul bunt with two strikes. Kemp flew out to left; Wade held second. Remillard bobbled Bleday’s grounder to second and threw errantly to first. Díaz flew around to home. Both calls were confirmed on review. The crowd went wild … on chants of “Sell the team!”

Fujinami got the win. He’s now 4-7, 9.57. Graveman, now 4-1, 300, was the losing pitcher.

Sunday, the two rivals will face each other in the final game of this three set series. Paul Blackman (1-0, 3,77) will be Oakland’s starting pitcher. Michael Kopech (3-7, 4.08) will play that role for Chicago. Game time is set for 1:07.
