The Sacramento Kings (37-40) put an end to a lengthy losing road streak beating the Charlotte Hornets (19-58) Friday night 125-102. They did it with their stars shining; Zach LaVine the leading scorer with 25 points, Domantas Sabonis with 24 and DeMar DeRozan with 22. Their bench put up good numbers scoring 46 points collectively.

The Kings continue to hang onto tenth place in the Western Conference. Their position became a little brighter today with the Suns losing to the Boston Celtics and dropping two full games behind the Kings.

Game recap: The first quarter of this game was all DeMar DeRozan who finished the opening quarter with 13 points. He is genius when it comes to drawing the foul and he successfully shot from the line throughout the first 12 minutes. Sacramento took a 26-18 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was lift-off for the Kings offensively taking as much as a 19 points lead. Sabonis, DeRozan and LaVine all had double digits as the quarter came to an end. Malik Monk also had 15 points off the bench as Sacramento went into the locker room at the half with a 68-49 lead. Monk was three of six from beyond the arc and Sabonis finished the half with 18 points. The Kings outscored the Hornets 42-31 in the second quarter.

The Kings continued to extend their lead in the third quarter leading going into the fourth quarter 98-72. They outscored the Hornets 30-23 in the quarter. Sabonis had a double double with 11 rebounds and 24 points very obviously back in top form after several injuries recently kept him sidelined for quite a few games.

The fourth quarter was a tough one for bench player Devon Carter. He played 14 minutes before fouling out having a lot of trouble guarding without fouling. Bench player Trey Lyles realized double digits mid-way through the final quarter and the Kings had total control in this game setting the pace from the second quarter on. The Hornets outscored the Kings in the fourth quarter 30-27 as the Kings starters sat for the final minutes of the game. The final was 125-102.

This was a great team effort for the Sacramento Kings. Zach LaVine had the game high with 25 points and 10 rebounds for the teams second double double. Domantas Sabonis had another double double with 11 rebounds and 24 points and DeMar DeRozan finished with 22. Malik Monk had a far improved game finishing with 17 points coming on strong after missing a number of game due to illness. Both he and Sabonis seemed to have gotten back into their stride.

Game notes: After a discouraging loss to the Washington Wizards Wednesday night, the Kings took it to the Hornets to end a miserable road game losing streak. The Kings won a game that they were highly favored to win.

After the loss Wednesday, all bets are off and the Kings need to put that game in their rear view and get down to the business of winning. With the starting roster that the Kings have and Jonas Valanciunas and Malik Monk off the bench, this team was able to put this game away before they head into some very challenging games which include the Cavaliers, the Nuggets, the Clippers and the Suns to finish off the season.

The Kings will finish the season with three home games the final game against the Phoenix Suns which could prove to be the most important game of the year for Sacramento depending on where the standings are in that last game.

Phoenix is one game behind the Kings right now and the win for Sacramento could go a long way towards a play-in spot. The Suns played the Celtics Friday night and Phoenix lost to the Celtics 123-103 which gives the Kings a two-game lead over the Suns. Where the Kings finish this season could be determined in their final season game.

The Sacramento Kings now have five games left in their season, two more on the road and their final three season games at Golden One. Next up for the Kings is a whopper playing the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday with tipoff scheduled for 3:00 PM. The Kings beat the Cavs in their first season game last month 123-119.

Warriors Easily Handle Hornets 115-97; Curry scores 23 to lead Golden State

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors (39-34) beat the struggling Charlotte Hornets (18-55) Friday night. The Hornets got close a few times in this game but could not handle the Warriors despite Golden State being without Jonathan Kuminga and Klay Thompson. The final score was 115-97.

Game recap: The Warriors were off to the races from the start of the first quarter leading after the first 12 minutes 26-17. The Hornets pushed back outscoring Golden State in the second quarter 28-24 and at halftime Golden State had a 50-45 lead.

This game was close partially due to the eight turnovers in the first half by the Warriors but the good news for Golden State was that they had held the Hornets to 36% shooting. With the Warriors shooting around 51%, 36 % will not win very many games.

The Warriors really pushed this game out in the third quarter after the Hornets pulled to within six points. After the first seven minutes of the quarter Golden State began to take this game away leading 77-59. After three quarters, the Warriors had this game well in hand, despite the drama that has plagued the team, leading 89-71. The Warriors were 12 minutes away from their 21st win on the road.

The Warriors upped their intensity mid-way through the fourth quarter leading 108-87. The final was 115-97 in favor of Golden State. For the third straight game, the Warriors had held their opponent to under a 100 points. With this season winding down there can be no further missteps this season and they really did a number on Charlotte Friday. Golden State is on a roll right now. They are 13-3 on their last 16 road trips.

Stephen Curry had the high with 23 points and Andrew Wiggins continues to step up scoring 20 points with eight rebounds. Off the bench Moses Moody had 15 points and he was 4 of 5 from beyond the Arc. Draymond Green came back well in this game with eight points and eight rebounds. Trayce Jackson-Davis and Chris Paul also scored double digits. This was a true team win with everybody chipping in.

Post game notes: Friday night the Warriors took on the Hornets for the second time this season. The Warriors won the first game back on February 23 by the score of 97-84. They won this game but Golden State has seen far stranger things especially since the season is winding down.

The Warriors are reeling after Green had his fourth ejection of the season. Green did say that he deserved to be ejected but the question still remains why does this keep happening?

This is a critical time of the season for the Warriors and they can ill afford any more blow-ups from Green while they are fighting to remain relevant in the playoff picture. They are currently fighting to remain in the tenth place.

Despite the ejection, the Warriors stepped up big time against a very tough Orlando Magic winning that game 101-93. Andrew Wiggins was a huge part of the win scoring the team high of 23 points.

The Hornets are struggling this season but had a huge win over the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday night. The Warriors played without Kuminga who continues to miss another game with left knee soreness and Thompson who missed tonight’s game with right knee tendinitis.

The Hornets LaMelo Ball will miss the remainder of the season with ankle tendinopathy. He has not played since January 26th and originally was injured last year on November 26th. He has missed so many games this season and is a large part of the struggles that Charlotte has had.

Easter Sunday afternoon the Golden State Warriors will take on another struggling team in the San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

Warriors grind out a win over Magic 101-93; Green gets 4th ejection of season

By Jerry Feitelberg

The stage was set for an intense battle as the Warriors squared off against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night in Orlando. The Magic, boasting a formidable lineup with five players towering over six feet ten inches and one at six feet nine inches, currently sit atop the Southeast Division with an impressive record of 42-29.

The absence of the Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga only added to the challenge. The Magic, known for their defensive prowess, rank among the top four defensive teams in the NBA. They also lead the league in the number of free throws taken, a testament to their aggressive style of play. The Warriors, facing a significant height disadvantage, knew they had their work cut out for them.

To make matters worse, Draymond Green was charged with two technical fouls with less than four minutes of action. Draymond was ejected. The Warriors’ head coach, Steve Kerr, had to find a way to beat the Magic.

The Magic’s game plan was to bottle up Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Keeping those two under their season’s averages meant someone had to step up. Andrew Wiggins was the man. Wiggins scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter. Wiggins blocked a shot late in the game to help the Warriors hold off the Magic. The Warriors held on a late Magic run to win the game 101-93.

The Magic scored the game’s first basket to lead 2-0. With the score tied 6-6, Wiggins was called for a foul. Green argued with the referee and received his first technical foul. As the Refs walked up the court, Green did something that got him his second technical and an automatic ejection.

The Magic’s last lead came with a score of 8-6. The Warriors went on a 21-4 run to finish the quarter leading 27-11. Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski, and Thompson paced the Warrior offense.

The Magic’s offense fought back in the second quarter. The Magic outscored the Dubs by eight, 26-18, to finish the first half trailing 45-37. Both teams were playing excellent defense. The Warriors held the Magic to 37 points in the half.

Last Night in Miami, The Warriors held the Heat to 32 points in the second half. Even without Green, the Warriors showed the NBA they know how to defend. Wiggins, Thompson, and Podziemski were excellent, keeping the much bigger Magic squad from scoring points in the paint.

Wiggins and Thompson led the Warriors with seven points in the half. Curry had six. Moses Moody knocked a key three and had five in the half. Podziemski and Gary Payton II each had six. The leading scorer for Orlando was Paolo Branchero, who scored nine. The Warriors’ defense held the Magic to 30% from the floor.

Things changed in the third quarter. The Magic, the worst team in the league shooting threes, connected on four threes to trail 49-41. The Magic’s Cole Anthony connected on five threes to help his team close the gap. The Warriors regrouped and led by 15, 63-48, after Gui Santos hit a three. Orlando went on an 11-2 run to trail by six, 65-59. The Magic won the quarter 29-27 to trail by six, 72-66 at the end of three quarters.

Wiggins hit a three to start the fourth quarter. The Magic hit a three, and Wiggins hit another three. The Warriors had an answer for every Magic bucket, but the Magic kept on coming. With the score 94-88, Orlando hit a three to make it 94-91. The Warriors failed to score. Orlando made a two-point play to trail by one, 94-93. Payton made a three, and Curry scored the game’s last five points. The Warriors win 101-93.

Game Notes: The Warriors are now 38-34. They have ten games left in the regular season. They play the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night in Charlotte. The Magic fell to 42-30.

Wiggins had one of his best games of the season. He led the team with 23 points, pulled down six rebounds, and blocked a shot late in the fourth quarter to help the Warriors win. Curry finished with a double-double. Curry scored 17 points and had ten assists. Curry made three threes.

Thomson tallied 15, and he, too, had three threes. Moody had 12, Gary Payton ten. The Warriors shot 44% from the floor as a team and made ten threes. The Warrior’s defense held the Magic to 42%. The Magic also made ten threes. The leading score for Orlando was Cole Anthony. Coming off the bench, Anthony recorded 26 points. He made five threes in seven tries. Banchero had 15, and Franz Wagner added 14.

The Warrior’s game against the Hornets starts at 4 pm Friday.

It was ugly but Warriors hold on beat Hornets 97-84; Golden State coach Kerr signs for 2 more yrs at $35 million

The Charlotte Hornets guard Vasilije Micic (left) passes the ball against Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) in the first half at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Fri Feb 23, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors (29-26) welcomed the Charlotte Hornets (14-42) to the Chase Center Friday night. The Hornets entered the game with a record of 14-41. Yet, the Hornets had won four straight. Charlotte’s star point guard, LaMelo Ball, was sidelined with an injury and would not play.

Everyone thought the Warriors would win in a cakewalk. The Hornets, coached by Steve Clifford, had other thoughts. The players knew they had to find a way to disrupt the Warriors’ game plan. Both teams played poorly in the first half.

The Warriors scored just 43 points in the first 24 minutes of play. The Warriors turned the ball over 14 times. The Warriors defense put the clamps on the Hornet offense. Charlotte tallied 29 points in the half. The Warriors got the offense going in the third quarter and held on to win, 97-84.

As mentioned above, the first two-quarters of the game were ugly. Neither team could get into a rhythm. The leading scorer for the Warriors was Gary Payton II. GP2 had eight points to lead the team. Stephen Curry had seven, and Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Jonathan Kuminga each had six. Miles Bridges had ten for the Hornets in the first half.

The Warriors offense came to life in the third quarter. They won the quarter30-23 and finished the period with the lead, 73-52. The Warriors led by 20, 80-60 after Thompson hit a three. The Warriors refused to let the Hornets get too close.

Curry hit a three to put the Warriors up 89-71. Head coach Steve Kerr took his regulars out of the game. The Hornets offense closed the gap to ten, 92-82. The time left in the game was a minute and 42 seconds. There was a remote possibility that the Hornets could make up the ten-point deficit.

That didn’t happen, as Moses Moody made a three with 1:05 left. Lester Quinones set off tempers when he made a basket with 12 seconds left. The Hornets’ Miles Bridges and Grant Williams were furious that Quinones took the shot.

The Warriors were going to win. The unwritten rule was to run out the clock. Quinones was hit with two technical fouls and was ejected from the game. Bridges and Williams each had a technical foul called on them. Williams was ejected. There was no scoring in the final few seconds of the game after the altercation.

Game Notes: It was an ugly win, but it is still a win. The Warriors improved to 29-26. Golden State has won ten of the last 12 games played. The Hornets fell to 14-42.

The Warriors had five players in double figures. Curry led the club with 15 points. Curry made three threes in eight tries. Wiggins had 14, Thompson and Brandin Podziemski each had 13, and Payton II added 12. The Warriors shot 42% from the floor and made 13 threes.

The Hornets also had five players with double-figures. Bridges led Charlotte with 19 points and 11 boards. Nick Richards and Brandon Miller each had 11. Tre Mann and Grant Williams had ten.

Kerr signed a two year extension worth $35 million, the contract is listed as a record annual value for a head coach. Kerr is in his tenth year with Golden State as his current contract expires at the end of this season. Kerr is breathing some relief as he was focused on this season but now that the contract issues have been completed he can focus on coaching and not on his future with the team.

The Warriors finish the homestand against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday at 4 pm.

Kings Dominate Hornets 123-98 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte

The Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis drives to the net against the Charlotte Hornets center Nathan Mensah and guard Terry Rozier at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte on Wed Jan 10, 2024 (AP News photo)

There would be no ugly start for the Sacramento Kings (23-14) in Wednesday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets (8-27). They won every quarter in the game with the final 123-98 in favor of the Kings at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. Once again Domantas Sabonis and Keegan Murray stole the show; Sabonis with 24 points and Murray with 25.

Game recap: The Kings did have a much better start in this game than they did Wednesday night. They won the opening quarter 33-28. They went on to win the second quarter 38-31 leading at the half 71-59. The Hornets began to made a bit of a move after trailing by as much as sixteen points in the second quarter.

Sabonis continued his stellar play with 18 points and six rebounds in the first half. Keegan Murray who had a slow start last night finished the half with 21 points en route to another terrific game.

De’Aaron Fox who also struggled last night in the opening quarter had 13 points in the half. They also cleaned up the turnovers with only four in the first half. Sacramento had a great first half and were looking to continue to contain Terry Rozier and Miles Bridges in the second half. Rozier and Bridges were doing most of the heavy lifting for the Hornets in the first half.

Four minutes into the third quarter, the Kings had taken their largest lead of the game 82-62. The Hornets had cut the Kings 23 point lead to 15 as the third quarter expired but Sacramento continued to lead 95-80. Charlotte was having little success containing Sabonis as he continued to dominate.

With under four minutes left on the clock the Kings had this game well in hand leading 117-91. The Sacramento starters came out of the game and the bench took over. The Hornets were looking to sweep the Kings after winning their first two matchups but Sacramento had different plans. They led the entire second half winning the game 123-98 handing Charlote their 28th loss of the season.

Murray had the high for the Kings with 25 points and Sabonis was close behind with 24 points and he also had ten rebounds. Malik Monk had 20 off the bench and team leader Fox finished with 19 points. With Murray and Sabonis shooting so well it takes so much pressure off Fox which can go a long way to keeping him healthy. Right now this team doesn’t have a single injury and that is something that they really want to preserve going forward.

The Hornets got some outstanding minutes from Rozier with 22 points and Bridges with 24 points.

Post game notes: After a scary first quarter Tuesday night against the Detroit Pistons, the Kings got a far different start in Wednesday night’s game against the Hornets. The Kings were outplayed in the first quarter of the Pistons game 47-29 and that was something that they didn’t want to see again any time soon. They were able to turn things around and win that game 131-110. The Hornets have been struggling this season losing Wednesday night to the Chicago Bulls 119-112.

Next up on this road trip for the Kings will be the Philadelphia 76ers Friday night. Both teams have similar records so this game has the makings of a real battle. The Sixers are favored to win this game. Joel Embiid is one of the Sixers main threats although he has missed his last two games with a swollen knee. He is doubtful in Friday’s game but that could change in the days leading up to Friday’s matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night in Sacramento. The Kings were set to play the second night of a back-to-back after playing on Tuesday. The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Kings in the first game of the back-to-back 111-104. The Kings would look to pick up their first win on back-to-back affairs this season. The tip-off was set for 7 PM PST from Golden One Center. The Kings would defeat the Magic on a second night of a back-to-back 138-135.

In the first quarter, the Kings got off to a slow start. Similar to the game against the Hornets, the Kings energy wasn’t present to start the game. Keegan Murray was the exception to this bad start, as he scored ten points in the first quarter. The Magic outscored the Kings in the first quarter 30-27 as they jumped out to the early lead in the game.

In the second quarter, the Kings battled. The Kings got down early in the second but managed to take the lead at the 8:31 mark. The Kings would get a spark from Malik Monk as they pulled ahead. For the rest of the quarter, the Kings continued to push the pace.

The Kings had a big quarter as they outscored the Magic 40-25 to take the lead going into halftime. The Kings would lead the Magic 67-55 at halftime as they looked to bounce back from Tuesday night’s game.

In the third quarter, the Magic came roaring back on the Kings. The Magic outscored the Kings 34-24 in the third quarter to pull within two points of the Kings. The Kings led 91-89 going into the final quarter after a total meltdown in the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings were in trouble. The Kings led by 16 at one point in the game and slipped all the way to trailing by three points with 6:17 in the game.

The Kings would need to take much better care of the ball in the final six minutes if they hoped to win the game. The game would go back and fourth but no result after the quarter. Regulation would end tied at 118.

The Kings would end up prevailing in the second overtime quarter by the final of 138-135. The Kings were led by Monk who had 37 points in the game. The Magic received their best performance from Paulo Banchero who scored 43 points.

Up Next: The Kings will stay home to take on the Toronto Raptors on Friday at 7 PM PST.
