Late goal gives Hurricanes 2-1 decision over winless Sharks

Sebastian Aho’s goal with less than two minutes remaining in the third period lifted the Carolina Hurricanes past the San Jose Sharks 2-1 Friday at SAP Center.

The Hurricanes are undefeated in their first two games of the NHL season, while San Jose is 0-3. This was the first game of a five-game road trip for Carolina, all of them against Pacific Division opponents.

Aho scored his first goal of the season at 18:02 of the third period, with Brett Pesce and Teuvo Teravainen each collecting their first assists. Aho worked his way to the slot and converted a re-direct off his skate from Pesce’s shot from the point.

The Hurricanes tied the game at 19:37 of the second period on Martin Necas’s second goal of the season, assisted by Andrei Svechnikov.

Evgeny Svechnikov opened the scoring for San Jose with his first goal of the season and his first as a Shark, coming at 17:48 of the first period. Jaycob Megna and Erik Karlsson had the assists.

James Reimer stopped 33 of 35 shots he faced in the Sharks’ goal, while Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta faced 19 shots, with 18 saves.

San Jose had 11 penalty minutes, including five by Noah Gregor for fighting with the Hurricanes’ Stefan Noesen in the third period. Noesen also received a 5-minute visit to the penalty box.

The other Sharks penalties were drawn by Radim Simek (tripping, closing hand on the puck) and Luke Kunin (hooking).

Former Shark Brent Burns was a plus-1 in 23 minutes of ice time. Burns spent the previous 11 seasons with San Jose.

The Sharks’ quest for their first win continues Saturday night when they host the winless Chicago Blackhawks. Opening faceoff at SAP Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.

#4 Len, Timo Meier has a undisclosed injury and Mario Ferraro missed practice with Meier and head coach David Quinn said both players are dealing with upper body issues and they might play tonight against the Hurricane. Also Alexander Barbonov is recovering from an injury. Scott Harrington and Noah Gregor could be replacements.

#5 The Sharks are playing back to back games at SAP to open the season tonight agianst the Hurricane and Saturday night against the Chicago Blackhawks just to get a preview from you on how you see these two teams matching up?

#1 Matt, we’ll lead off with the NHL Global Series where game one was concluded Friday in a 4-1 loss and then the Sharks took another tough loss in a squeaker 3-2 on Saturday. The biggest thrill was when the Sharks Tomas Hertl scored San Jose’s lone goal on Friday in front of Hertl’s hometown fans in Prague.

#2 28 year old defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to a big eight year handshake from the Calgary Flames signing on for $50 million. Weegar is in the final year of his three year deal with the Flames and the Flames wanted to go out and make sure they could secure his services.

#3 Elsipogtog First Nation celebrated the NHL pre season game between the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators which drops the puck this Saturday at J.K. Irving Centre in Bouctouche. Matt this will be probably the only time the Elsipogtog First Nation will be an opportunity to see the Stanley Cup up close and in person. The First Nation gets to enjoy Hockeyville and NHL hockey atmosphere.

#4 Matt, Jordan Staal is looking for contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. Canes general manager Don Waddell says he’s confident he can get a deal with Staal. Staal is in the final year of his ten year $60 million contract.

#5 The Dallas Stars Jason Robertson signed on for a four year $31 million contract. In 2021-22 Robertson had 41 goals, 38 assists, 79 points, and a plus 16 Rating. Looks like the Stars and Robertson got a good deal on both ends.

#1 Len, The Tampa Bay Lightning have had a good week off waiting to see if they’re going to face the New York Rangers or the Carolina Hurricanes which should be decided in game 7 on Monday in Carolina. Each game has been won by the home team in this series.

#2 The Rangers and Hurricanes dueled it out in game six and the Rangers came away with a three goal win 5-2 with Ranger goaltender Igor Shesterkin who stopped 37 shots. The Rangers Filip Chytil scored twice for the Rangers. How difficult will it be for the Rangers to win a game in Carolina or after a game like this does this build confidence.

#3 The Hurricanes have been getting some strong offense in their wins and getting key goals from Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen, and Vincent Trocheck. How important will these players be going into game 7 against the Rangers.

#4 The series that is ready to get underway is the Edmonton Oilers and the Avalanche on Tuesday night in Colorado. The Oilers just dominated and took out the Calgary Flames 4-1 and the Avalanche took out the St Louis Blues 4-2 do you see these two teams equal or one team has the ability to advance to the Finals.

#1 The Carolina Hurricanes continue to roll with a 3-2 series lead and a game five 3-1 win over the New York Rangers at PNC Arena in Carolina. The home team has won each game of the series.

#2 The Canes Vincent Trocheck, Teuvo Teravainen, and Andrei Svechnikov all scored a goal each. Hurricanes’ goalie Antti Raanta saved 16 shots in the winning effort.

#3 Matt, Hurricanes need a win to wrap it up but the series goes back to Madison Square Garden tonight for game six can the Rangers avoid elimination as they’ve played well on home ice in games 3 and 4.

#4 The Colorado Avalanche eliminated the St Louis Blues four games to two in the Western Conference Playoffs. The Avalanche rallying for two goals in the third period after being down 2-1 to win it by a score of 3-2.

#5 Matt how much credit do you give the Aves Darrin Helm who scored with just 5.6 seconds left in the game that was the difference to eliminate the Blues and advance to the NHL Finals. The Avalanche will host the Edmonton Oilers for game 1 Eastern Conference Finals Tuesday night in Denver a 5:00 pm PDT.

#3  In the battle of Florida The Tampa Bay Lightning are in the driver’s seat with the series lead 3-0 and their getting some great scoring not to mention great goaltending from Andrei Vasilevskiy in their game 3 win today 5-1.

#4 The Carolina Hurricanes lead the series 2-1 against the New York Rangers and played game 3 today at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers won a crucial game 3-1 how did home ice pay off for the Rangers today?

#5 The Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers are battling it out in Edmonton the Flames had Oilers came back on the Flames in game 1 only to lose the lead 9-6. The Oilers bounced back in game 2 with a 5-2 win and goaltender Mike Smith stopped 37 shots.

#1 The Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta stopped 21 shots on his way to a 2-0 shutout Friday night his first playoff shutout in game 2 of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The win puts the Hurricanes up 2-0 over the New York Rangers.

#2 After watching the first two games of this series how concerned does the proposition of going down in the first two games have to be for Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant and can the Rangers consider going back to MSG for the next two games a chance to get back into this thing?

#3 Last Wednesday the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames battled to a 9-6 Flames win. The Flames had to breath a sigh a relief in that one up 3-1 they gave up four goals in the second period to the Oilers but came back to win game 1.

#4 In game 2 on Friday night the Oilers had an opportune moment when the Oilers Zach Hyman took advantage of a break away in the middle of the third period with the score tied at 3-3. Hyman got a shot over the glove of the Flames goaltender Jakob Markstrom to put the Oilers ahead 4-3 at 10:14.

#5 A thriller in Denver the Colorado Avalanche get a big win taking it to the St Louis Blues with a game 3 win the Blues were up front but the Avalanche came back to overtake the Blues 5-3 and take a 2-1 series lead. The Avalanche got two goals from Artturi Lehkonen.

#1 The New York Rangers avoided getting eliminated as Chris Krieder scored a third period goal at 1:28 that broke a 3-3 deadlock with a shot from the left point that deflected off the Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Louis Domigue for the score. The Rangers would win it 5-3 tying the series at 3-3.

# 2 The Florida Panthers advanced to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 4-3 overtime win over the Washington Capitals at the Capital Center. The Panthers Carter Verhaeghe scored at 2:46 in overtime for the game winning shot.

#3 The Dallas Stars defeated the Calgary Flames on Friday to tie up the series 3-3 with a 4-2 win. The Stars Joe Pavelski said that they are a confident group that can play through tight games and the Stars have been competitive in the playoffs.

#4 The Boston Bruins avoided elimination on Thursday with a win to tied up the series with the Carolina Hurricanes 3-3. Both teams meet again today for a 1:30 pm PDT puck drop.

#5 The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Toronto Maple Leafs face off at 4:00 pm PDT as the series is tied at 3-3.

#6 Kings-Oilers battle in Edmonton tonight at 7:00 pm PDT as this series is tied 3-3 everything on the line tonight.

#1 The Boston Bruins came into the TD Waterhouse Garden down 2-0 knowing if they’d drop Friday night’s third game they’d have their backs to the wall going into a game four down 3-0 such was not the case as he B’s saved themselves but cutting the visiting Carolina Hurricanes lead down to 2-1.

#2 Matt, talk about Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman and how crucial was he stopping 25 shots and allowing two goals in the 4-2 win.

#3 The Bruins Brad Marchand scored a goal and had two assists and David Pastrnak and Charlie Coyle scored and had an assist for the Bruins how important were these guys in game 3.

#4 The Toronto Maple Leafs came into this game with grit playing against one of the toughest teams in the NHL the Tampa Bay Lightning in this round 1 as they came away with a three goal 5-2 win. The Leafs scored twice in the first and third periods and goaltender Jack Campbell stopped 32 shots and allowed to two goals.

#5 The Leafs now lead the Lightning 2-1 in the best of seven series. For the Bolts goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 34 shots a good number but allowed three goals. Was this game a matter of Vasilevskiy just not being on his game or was the Leafs offense just that good and had their way with the Lightning defense?

#1 The Pittsburgh Penguins (46-25-11) advanced to the playoffs with a win over the Columbus Blue Jackets (37-38-7) 5-3 on Friday night at PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins will face the Rangers for the Eastern Conference first round in game 1.

#2 Both the Buffalo Sabers (32-39-11) and the Chicago Blackhawks (28-42-12) concluded their regular season with the Sabers getting an overtime win over the Blackhawks 3-2 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo Friday. The Blackhawks started out with a 2-0 lead but the Sabers came back and tied it up in the second period 2-2. The Sabers Casey Mittelstadt got the overtime game winning goal at 2:53.

#3 The Boston Bruins lost their last game of the season to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night 5-2 and will face off with the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Leafs will play the Tampa Bay Lightning.

#4 It was the first win for Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price since game 4 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs Finals. It was a landslide of goals scored by the Canadiens 10-2 over the Florida Panthers on Friday night at the Belle Centre. Price stopped 37 shots and it was his 700th start and 712th game with the Canadiens for his 361st career win.

#5 In his first game in five seasons for the Detroit Red Wings goaltender Magnus Hellberg it was like riding a bike you just don’t forget. Hellburg stopped 20 shots by the New Jersey Devils to help in a 5-3 win at the Prudential Center on Friday night. Hellberg played five years in the Kontinental Hockey League before signing an Apr 13th free agent contract with the Red Wings.
