San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Marleau’s return the difference in Sharks’ first win; Sharks host Calgary on Sunday

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh:

#1 How much of a difference did it make signing Patrick Marleau after losing four straight and Marleau coming in to score two goals to San Jose with a one-goal win 5-4?

#2  How much prep did Marleau need? He wasn’t with a team and he last played with the Carolina Hurricanes and that was only for a week after the release by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

#3 Marleau was excited to be back in San Jose, but his teammates shared that same excitement, and after going 0-4, they didn’t have pressing feelings and just got by Chicago 5-4.

#4 The Sharks’ Brent Burns scored his 200th career goal. After all that Burns went through — the hard work, the goals and play system of the Sharks — it was a goal well-earned.

#5 The Sharks return this Sunday to host the Calgary Flames. It will the be Sharks’ first chance to get their first home win after losing their home opener on Friday, October 4th.

Sharks Win First of Preseason, 4-1, on Four-Goal Third Period

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Sharks finally won in the 2019 preseason, besting the Calgary Flames 4-1 Thursday night at the SAP Center. Dylan Gambrell helped his cause to make the opening night roster by scoring two goals, line mates Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl scored a goal apiece and Brent Burns notched assists on all four goals.

Both teams were scoreless entering the third period, but Kane opened the flood gates by beating Flames netminder Artyom Zagidulin 3:17 into the third. San Jose then scored three goals in a span of 2:58. Tomas Hertl tipped a Burns blast past Zagidulin at the 10:59 mark then Gambrell beat Zagidulin twice for a 4-0 lead.

Gambrell opened the game on the second line with Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl, but couldn’t take advantage of his opportunities and found himself on the potential fourth line with Melker Karlsson and Goodrow. His odds of factoring into the opening night roster, be it as a skater or a scratch were dwindling, especially with Lukas Radil excelling with Kane and Hertl throughout the preseason. The pressure coach Peter DeBoer has put on the young Gambrell paid off in spades with his performance down the stretch, with production from the fourth line being a necessity this year as the Sharks try to replace Joe Pavelski’s production.

One of the many Sharks assured a spot in the lineup October 2nd, Brent Burns still turned in a stellar performance, collecting four assists in a period. The feat would match a franchise record were the game to have counted.

The Sharks got solid goaltending from Martin Jones with the incumbent starter making 24 saves on 25 shots. The lone goal came with 4:02 left in regulation after Justin Kirkland punched home a rebound to cut the lead to 4-1. The same could not be said of Calgary’s goalie Zagidulin. The 24-year-old former KHLer gave up four goals on 12 shots, entering the game to start the third period. Cam Talbot was perfect to open the game, turning aside 24 Sharks shots to enter third tied 0-0.

Up next for the Sharks are some roster decisions and a match-up with the same team the Sharks will face twice in the season’s first two games. San Jose will face the Vegas Golden Knights Monday on the road before opening the season at T-Mobile Arena on October 2nd.

Sharks drop second preseason game to Flames, 6-4

The San Jose Sharks played their second preseason game in as many days as they took on the Calgary Flames after traveling Wednesday.

The Flames played their third match in three days thanks to a traveling doubleheader.

None of that mattered though as both teams combined for 10 goals and their most goals apiece of the preseason, even though their previous contests were multi-goal games as well. 

20 different players had their first preseason points. The Sharks’ Manuel Wiederer had two goals, Calgary’s Dillon Dube had his second goal in as many games and an assist, San Jose’s Ivan Chekhovich had a goal and an assist, the Sharks’ Jayden Halbgewachs and Tony Sund had two assists and the Flames’ Tobias Rieder had his second assist in as many games.  

All the first period action happened in the opening half.  

San Jose went first with Lean Bergmann scoring solo at 4:01.

Sean Monahan tied the contest up at 7:06 and teammate Alan Quine followed with a close-up goal that went between Antoine Bibeau’s knees at 8:32.

The Sharks had a 3-on-1 in the waning seconds of the first but the net went off its moorings. 

Both teams went on a scoring exhibition in the second.

At first, it started off the same way as the first with both teams combining for three goals before the 10-minute mark in the same order. 

The puck touched the tape of several players, but San Jose used a faceoff win and a tip to tie up the game a second time.  Chekhovich scored at 6:44. 

Adam Ruzicka gave Calgary back the 3-2 lead at 8:51, as he took the pass from Martin Pospisil at the boards and at 9:21, Derek Ryan’s pass turned into a scoring shot as the puck hopped off the Sharks’ Tomas Hertl’s stick in between.

Then the teams started trading off goals in the closing part of the period.

Sund took the hard shot and Wiederer shoved it in at 11:39.

Dube used handy stickwork to re-establish a two-goal lead at 13:35.

Wiederer moved around his defender at 17:54 to make sure his team did not end the period worse than it started.  

Rieder started off the third with a clang in the form of a crossbar shot.

He also drew another penalty from Mario Ferraro around the same time as the second period, at 1:11. 

The Flames had their only power play at 8:48.

Up Next: San Jose will host the Vegas Golden Knights Saturday at 5 pm.

#1 This is going to be the sixth time that the San Jose Sharks and St. Louis Blues have met in the Western Conference Finals. In those six meetings, the Sharks have won three of those series.

#2 The Sharks in 2016 played their only Stanley Cup Finals and lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Are the Sharks a different team this season after facing elimination to the Vegas Golden Knights and taking out the Colorado Avalanche in seven games? Is this team more on a mission then that 2016 team?

#3 Sharks captain Joe Pavelski contributed to the cause with a goal after coming back from a critical concussion in Game 7 of the first round. How much did Pavelski inspire this team?

#4 In postseason play, the Sharks forwards Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl are in a two-way tie for second in NHL playoffs for scoring. Defensemen Brent Burns and Hertl have nine goals and 14 points so no doubt the Sharks are getting some offensive support.

#5 The Sharks open up the best of seven Saturday night at SAP Center in San Jose for Games 1 and 2. Len sets this series up for us.

NHL Stanley Cup Conference Finals podcast with Joe Lami: Sharks’ DeBoer didn’t underestimate Avs; Bruins getting it done on the power play

San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer, after things settled down after the Sharks’ Game 7 victory on Wednesday night against the Colorado Avalanche, said the Avalanche were a team that handled a tough Calgary Flames team and got through them in the first round and it gave him some concern having to face Colorado.

While it gave DeBoer pause, he said he was proud of the job that the Sharks did in taking the second round against the Avalanche. Winning the second series without team captain Joe Pavelski, how both Brent Burns and Erki Karlsson both contributed with strong offensive performances. Burns and teammate Tomas Hertl combined with nine goals and 14 points.

The Boston Bruins held it together on Thursday night in Game 1 of the third round with a three goal win 5-3 over the Carolina Hurricanes, mostly because of the power play. The Bruins’ Marcus Johansson and Patrice Bergeron scored power play goals in 28 seconds. The Boston Bruins forward Charlie Wagner commented on the NHL Network that the Bruins took advantage of the power play, getting that huge 5-4 advantage gets them in their other end and they found their way to the back end of the net.

The Bruins, with their 5-3 win and having a 1-0 series lead, go to Game 2 on Sunday and the Bruins feel good to be on their home ice for this second game. Joe says the Bruins the huge favorite to take this series in five or six games.

#2 The Colorado Avalanche went through the Calgary Flames like butter to advance to round two. What made it a breeze for the Avalanche to win the first round?

#3 The Avalanche in Game 5 to advance got a convincing four-goal win over the Flames 5-1. The Avalanche’s Colin Wilson and Mikko Rantanen each had huge night scoring twice and each with an assist.

#4 The Toronto Maple Leafs have a 3-2 lead on the Boston Bruins after getting a narrow 2-1 win on Friday night in Boston. The Bruins needed that game they had home ice and now head back to Toronto for an elimination game.

#5 The Leafs’ Auston Matthews broke the 0-0 deadlock with a goal in the third period and the Leafs’ Kasperi Kapanen scored another goal that pushed the Leafs past the Bruins for the win.

#5 The St. Louis Blues lead the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 going into Game 6 on Saturday night. The Jets’ Mark Scheifele has been leading on offense and paving the way for the Jets to stay alive in this one and for the Blues’ Vladimir Tarasenko, who has led the Blues in scoring, did some damage in the first round.

#2 Texas Tech-Michigan State is the next game on Sunday. The Red Raiders gave it their all when they beat Gonzaga last Sunday and the Spartans are one the winningest and high-ranking teams in the Tournament.

#3 The Stanford Women (31-5) and Notre Dame (34-3) battled it out, but after giving it their all all season long, the Cardinal could not withstand and lost to the Fighting Irish 84-68.

#4 The Oakland A’s started the 2019 season with two loses in Tokyo to the Seattle Mariners. Since that trip, it looks like the A’s have shaken off the jet lag and have been on track winning taking three of four from the Angels since coming back to Oakland and a win over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night to open another four-game series.

#5 The San Jose Sharks’ troubles continue after they dropped their eighth loss in nine games to the Western Conference first place Calgary Flames on Sunday. The win secures the Flames for first place and what was worse was that it was done on the Sharks’ home ice.

Flames Roast Sharks 5-3, Sharks to Face Las Vegas in First Round

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks fell 5-3 to the Calgary Flames at SAP Center Sunday. The win clinched the Western Conference for Calgary, while the loss cemented San Jose’s playoff position at second in the Pacific Division. They are now certain to face the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round. Calgary goals came from Sean Monahan, Mark Jankowski, Dalton Prout, Mikael Backlund and Michael Frolik. Sharks goals came from Timo Meier, Logan Couture and Kevin Labanc. Flames goalie Mike Smith made 12 saves in the win, while Sharks goalie Aaron Dell made 23 saves in the loss.

The Sharks are still without Joe Pavelski, Erik Karlsson and Radim Simek. Pavelski and Karlsson are expected to return for the playoffs if not before. Asked about what he hopes the team will accomplish before playoffs, Sharks head coach Pete DeBoer said:

I want to get healthy. I think that’s probably the biggest thing. I think it catches up to you. You know, you can go to the well so many times with guys but I think we’re missing some of our key people here. And it shows in a game like that, against a team that is healthy at this time of year that’s one of the top teams in the league and we had a hard time with it.

After the game, Sharks defenseman Brenden Dillon was also asked about how the injury list changes the game. He said:

I don’t think defense is one guy or one D-pair or one forward or one goalie, to be honest. I think for us, over the years that’s kind of been our brand of hockey, is defensive style, and you definitely see the result when we get away from that. I think all around we’re trying to be a little more aggressive but I think we’ve got to kind of find that happy medium for it.

Timo Meier gave the Sharks an early lead 12:01 into the first period. Logan Couture and Joonas Donskoi were in the corner competing for the puck against two Flames. They got the puck out of the corner to the face-off circle, where Meier had just arrived. He got control of the puck while reversing direction just enough to use a defenseman as a screen and shoot the puck past Smith on the far side. It was Meier’s 30th of the season, a career high. Donskoi and Couture got the assists.

The Sharks made it through the first 10 minutes of the opening period without giving up a goal but the Flames heated up in the second half. At 14:58, Sean Monahan tied the game with a quick shot off a feed from Johnny Gaudreau. While Marc-Edouard Vlasic harried Gaudreau and Justin Braun guarded the passing lane, no one was really on Monahan as he slid up to the blue paint. Assists went to Gaudreau and Rasmus Andersson.

At 15:29, Mark Jankowski gave Calgary the lead, pulling the puck out of a crowd that was moving across the slot. His quick shot went under Dell to the back of the net. Assists went to James Neal and Austin Czarnik.

Less than a minute later, again, the Flames scored to make it 3-1. Dalton Prout, with his first goal since 2016, snuck by Vlasic and Couture in the neutral zone to chase the 1-on-1 between Tim Heed and Andrew Mangiapane. Mangiapane passed to Prout as they approached the net and Prout’s shot beat Dell. Assists went to Mangiapane and Garnet Hathaway.

During the first period, the Flames had 11 shots to the Sharks’ 6, and Calgary own 67% of the face-offs.

The only goal in the second period went to the Flames when Mikael Backlund made it 4-1 at 7:27. Receiving Noah Hanifin’s pass from the boards, Backlund stopped it with his skate and tried to get control of it but failed. Instead, it pinballed across the goal mouth and the off of Joakim Ryan’s skate and into the net. Assists went to Hanifin and Gaudreau.

The Flames out-shot the Sharks 14-3 and won 56% of the face-offs in the second period. The Sharks took two penalties to Calgary’s one.

The Sharks had a little more than a minute of power play time to start the third period, and got another power play at 2:01 but did not score on either of those.

At 5:23, the Sharks finally got one back. Tomas Hertl made a big zone entry, pushing through and dancing around defenders. He carried the puck down below the face-off dot before passing it across the ice to Timo Meier. Meier sent it back across the ice to Logan Couture, who had just arrived in the slot. His shot went in before Mike Smith could get across. It was Couture’s 27th goal of the season. Meier and Hertl got the assists.

Calgary took that one back about three minutes later. Sharks and Flames converged behind the Sharks net and when the puck came back out, Mark Giordano and Michael Frolik were set up on either side of the ice with a clear view of Dell. Giordano passed it to Frolik for the shot and Dell could not get across in time. Assists went to Giordano and Matthew Tkachuk.

Kevin Labanc got one more for the Sharks at 16:34 of the third. He had just passed the puck to Tim Heed in the slot and Tim Heed tapped it right back to him for the shot from the right side. It was Labanc’s 15th of the season. Assists went to Heed and Joakim Ryan.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in Vancouver against the Canucks at 7:00 PM PT.

#1 The Sharks missed a great opportunity last Monday night when they could have gained some ground on the Calgary Flames after the Flames were shutout by the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks then went out and lost to the Detroit Red Wings on home ice for their sixth straight loss.

#2 The Sharks, without Joe Pavelski and Erik Karlsson, saw the Red Wings wasted no time at 4:23 in the first period with a goal from Andreas Athanasiou for his 29th goal of the season.

#3 The Sharks goalie Martin Jones had to stop three breakaways in the game, and with breakaways, you never know how their going to turn out.

#4 The Sharks got goal help from Evander Kane his 28th of the season, but the Sharks would have to wait until the third period with five seconds left in the game when Tomas Hertl scored a goal, but the Sharks came up a goal short in the 3-2 loss.

#5 The Chicago Blackhawks will visit SAP Center tonight. The Sharks badly need to snap this streak as their home ice advantage hopes for the playoffs are starting put them in a lower ranking priority.
