Ducks hold off late Cal threat, wins 24-17

A late rally by California Bears fell short on Friday night against Oregon, as the No. 9-ranked Ducks held on for a 24-17 Pac-12 football victory at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

Oregon improved to 5-1 overall.

Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 11-yard run with 5:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Ducks’ defense then held Cal on downs inside their 5-yard line as time ran out.

Brown completed 20 of 28 passes for 244 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also ran 13 times for 44 yards. Oregon’s Travis Dye gained 145 yards on 19 carries, and caught seven passes for 73 yards.

Golden Bears quarterback Chase Garbers threw for 248 yards, two touchdowns, completing 25 of 45 passes without a pick. Christopher Brooks was Cal’s top ground gainer with 69 yards on 14 carries. Kekoa Crawford caught six passes, Nikko Remigo caught four and Jeremiah Hunter had 78 receiving yards on three catches.

Cal (1-5) drove 67 yards on its final drive in regulation, moving to the Ducks 7-yard line with less than a minute to play following an Oregon pass interference penalty. After Garbers was sacked, followed by an incomplete pass, the Bears called time out
On 4th-and-8 from the Oregon 7, Garbers completed a 5-yard pass to Kekoa Crawford, putting Cal at the Ducks 3.

With Cal looking at 3rd-and-goal, Oregon called time out with 14 seconds left. After Garbers gained one yard, Cal called time out with 10 seconds to play.  Out of the time out, Garbers threw an incompletion on 4th-and-2.

Cal took a 17-10 lead at 14:29 of the fourth quarter on Garbers’ 4-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Reinwald. The Ducks responded nearly two minutes later when Brown connected with Jaylon Redd on a 20-yard scoring pass, tying the game at 17-17.

An 11-yard touchdown run by Travis Dye gave the Ducks their second lead of the night at 10-7 with 5:55 remaining in the first half. Dario Longhetto’s 45-yard field goal at 8:45 of the third quarter tied the contest at 10-10.

Oregon scored first early in the first quarter when Camden Lewis booted a 49-yard field goal. The Bears took their first lead at 5:57 of the first period on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Garbers to Jake Tonges, putting Cal up 7-3.

Next week, the Bears return home to host Colorado. Game time is 12:30 p.m.

#1 Daniel, in the last two games the Cal Bears (1-4) have convincingly been defeated Sep 25 in Seattle by the Washington Huskies (2-3) 31-24 and Oct 2 by the Washington State Cougars (3-3) 21-6. How much would you allude the loses to a break down in the Cal defense.

#2 In the last game against the Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura threw for 25-41, 219 yards, three touchdowns, and was intercepted twice.

#3 The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and Cal could only answer with six points in the first quarter for all their scoring for the night.

#4 Cal quarterback Chase Garbers just couldn’t get anything going on offense going 14-30, 152 yards, and no touchdowns as Cal was shutout in the second, third and fourth quarters.

#5 The Oregon Ducks (4-1) are next for Cal this Sat Oct 16th. The Ducks lost their last game to the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 at Stanford Stadium. The Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown was 14-26, 186 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

Cal can’t get any offense going drop third straight to WSU 21-6

It’s tough to lose three straight but it’s tougher to lose on your own home field which the Cal Golden Bears (1-4) did at UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium to the Washington State Cougars (2-3) 21-6.

The Cougars quarterback Jayden De Laura threw for three touchdowns, was 25-41 for 219 yards and was intercepted twice but the defense held their ground and De Laura and the offense just got enough scoring for the win.

On one of the two passes from De Laura to wide out Calvin Jackson Jr who made a one handed catch in the end zone at the corner. This was De Laura’s first game back since suffering a leg injury two weeks ago against the USC Trojans.

The 25 completions out of 41 attempts for De Laura tied his career best in a game and it helped the Cougars pick up their first win at Cal since the 2013 season. “It felt fine to go out there,” de Laura said. “I knew I had to bring some energy and do my part. I just gave the receivers and the running backs the ball and let them make plays.”

Jackson Jr had his way with the Cal defense with six receptions for 53 yards Jackson’s teammate wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling had a pretty decent afternoon himself with four catches for 36 yards and one touchdown.

The Cal offense just sputtered and it was tough especially to lose at home and Bears quarterback Chase Garbers came up empty handed for the afternoon not being able to throw one touchdown, going 14-30 for 152 yards and an interception.

The Bears next opponent the Oregon Ducks (4-1) No.3 next Sat Oct 9 who were just knocked off by the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 will be pumped and ready to go and it’s the last thing the Bears want is to walk into a hornets nest which they can expect at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

Garbers says the Bears need to be prepared and they need to find out who they are, “These next two weeks we’re really going to find out who we are as a team, who we are as people. They had our number, they did a great job and they just outplayed us. That happens.”

Huskies outlast Bears in overtime 31-24 in Seattle

With the score all knotted up at 24-24 at the University of Washington in the overtime stanza the Washington Huskies (2-2) Cameron Williams and Jackson Sirmon got the Cal Bears (1-3) Damien Moore to fumble at the Huskies one yard line after a hard hit and the Huskies Ryan Bowman jumped on the loose ball for the recovery and what would save the Huskies from facing a second overtime as the Bears were just a yard away from tying up the game.

The officials called for a review to make sure that the fumble was legit and ruled that it was which was unfortunate for the Bears as time and possession would run out for Cal.

The Huskies Seth Mcgrew scored his second touchdown of the game at the beginning of the overtime to give the Huskies a seven point lead and eventual win 31-24. This was the first meeting between the two schools since 2019. Last season the game was cancelled during the Covid 19 crisis. If Cal had won it Saturday it would have been their third straight win in 100 meetings with Washington.

Cal quarterback Chase Garbers in the post game interview said that Moore would like to have that fumble back as Moore was pretty down after the game about coughing up the ball, “Obviously Damien wants that one back. We all do,” said Garbers “Stuff happens in football, you get unlucky sometimes, but we’re a really close group in the locker room so we’re all there for each other.”

Garbers himself had a relatively good game under center throwing for 319 yards 30-41 for two touchdowns and two interceptions. Garbers was picked off twice by the Huskies Kyler Gordon one of the picks happened early in the fourth quarter and the Huskies couldn’t score and Garbers later was able to run a seven yard touchdown with at 2:51 which tied up the game.

The Bears return to UC Berkeley for a Sat Oct 2 meeting at Memorial Stadium with the Washington State Cougars for a 2pm PDT kickoff. The Cougars (1-3) lost in their last game Saturday to the Utah Utes (2-2) 24-13. The Utes scored two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Cougars defense broke down at Utah.

Strong effort leads Wolfpack to victory over Bears in season opener 22-17

The Nevada Wolfpack lead by quarterback Carson Strong picked up a season opening win at Cal Memorial Stadium in Berkeley 22-17 against the Cal Bears. Strong threw for two touchdowns Saturday night and let it fly in this contest totaling 312 yards.

The Wolfpack wasted no time answering Cal down 14-0 on the scoreboard after the first quarter scoring for 13 points in the second quarter for a 14-13 halftime score. Strong who is from Northern California and lived just an hour away from Memorial Stadium threw a touchdown to receiver Romeo Dobbs and got two field goals from kicker Brandon Talton for the 13 points in the second quarter.

Strong wanted to always play for Cal but he suffered an knee injury in his high school senior year in Vacaville and the Bears didn’t recruit him and Strong then chose to go to the Nevada Wolfpack. Strong said he always wants to win but winning at Cal was pretty sweet for Strong.

The pass to Dobbs in the second quarter was for 43 yards, Strong said this game will be memorable for him. The Bears in the first quarter didn’t waste anytime scoring in their first two drives. Then things didn’t go as plan for the Bears on offense in four offense drives they failed to execute on three and out.

The Wolfpack took advantage on offense scoring 22 unanswered points. The Wolfpack scored nine points in the third quarter and the Bears would only kick a field goal in the fourth quarter to lose by five points.

In the second half third quarter for the Wolfpack Strong executed a impressive offensive series to score a touchdown. On third and 17 Strong throwing for 17 yards to Cole Turner to get a first down, then a 46 yard pass to Tory Horton on third and nine, then the 43 yard touchdown pass to Dobbs.

Nevada head coach Jay Norvell said that Strong exhibited ability and was able to perform the key scoring plays early in the game, ““He’s just a super competitor,” Norvell said. “He was amazing tonight, just his will and his aggressiveness to wanting to go after these guys and stay on them. I just appreciate him so much in that regard.”

The Bears are back to the drawing board and head to Texas for their next game at TCU on Sat Sep 11th. TCU one the most traditional schools are no easy task the Bears will be studying film and making plans to execute scoring on this rugged opponent.

On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 We’ll start off talking about women’s basketball Jerry, the Stanford women (25-2) got a big win over UCLA (16-5) on Sunday 75-55 a game that showed you what this team can do and why their ranked No. 1.

#2 Michaela Onyenwere last Sunday scored 30 points and has been a key part of the offense for the Stanford women.

#3 Turning to men’s basketball last night at the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas. The Cal Bears played wire to wire against the Stanford Cardinal. The Cardinal just couldn’t generate the kind of offense they’ve had in past games this season and it wasn’t even close in the loss 76-58.

#4 Oscar da Silva returned from the injured list and scored 12 points and Jaiden Delaire finished first in scoring with 14 but it was too little for Stanford to beat Cal.

#5 What’s has to be in store for Stanford head coach Jerod Haase he had a team that was good enough to compete, the da Silva injury hampered the team and now he’s going to have to look forward to getting some recruiting done in the off season.

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris, one consolation about the Cal Bears season (8-19) the Pac 12 Tournament will be their last hurrah for the 2020-21 season.

#2 Let’s talk about some of the players who shined and had some good games during the season for Cal we’ll start with the very popular Matt Bradley who finished the season with 18.4 points per game average

#3 The Bears Andre Kelly finished in second in average season scoring with 10.4 not the biggest overall season number but Kelly did help out with some games this season.

#4 For head coach Mark Fox looking past the Pac 12 Tournament he should have a busy off season recruiting.

#5  The Bears are in Vegas on Mar 10th and will face Stanford do you see any outside chance the Bears could make this an interesting game although their long shots for advancing in the Tournament.

Morris on Cal Bears basketball podcast:

#1 Morris, final game of the regular season on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion a frustrating loss to end the season for the Cal Bears (8-19) against a very good Oregon Ducks (16-5) team 74-63. Like you said in your headline the Ducks did harass Cal all night long.

#2 Cal did play hard and were focused but the Ducks dominated both halves and from the beginning you get the sense Cal would have a long night trying to keep up with Oregon.

#3 Although Cal had four players in double figures those figures were low scoring from Ryan Betly (13), Matt Bradley (12), Andre Kelly (12), and Jarred Hyder (10).

#4 The Bears (8-19, 3-17) last place finish in the Pac-12 comes with an alarming distinction: among Power 5 conference schools (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) only Boston College will finish the season with a lower power rating. Boston College at ranked 261 while Cal ranked 246.

#5 Its off to the Pac 12 Tournament for Cal’s next game on March 10th at T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas and Cal gets one more chance to shine how does head coach Mark Fox prepare for this tournament?

On the Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 After the Cal Bears (8-16) had a huge victory over the Colorado Buffaloes last Saturday things turned for the worse at Washington State and the Cougars had their way with a convincing 82-51 win on Thursday night.

#2 Matt Bradley led the way in scoring for the Bears with 16 and Andre Kelly followed up with 10 points and both were the only ones in double figures.

#3 No way Noah Williams of the Cougars had 32 points no way because there was no way the defense could have shut him down as Williams worked his way through the Cal defense even in the paint.

#4 Michael when you see someone like that having his way with the defense would it have helped if head coach Mark Fox had double teamed Williams?

#5 It’s onto Seattle and the Washington Huskies (4-17) who have lost seven of their last eight games and the Cal Bears have lost nine of their last ten games both teams clash on Saturday at 7:00pm at UW.

#1 Jerry, the Cardinal (12-7) are coming off a two game sweep over the Cal Bears (7-14) many have said for the Cardinal this was an easy sweep of the struggling Bears.

#2 Stanford star Oscar da Silva had himself quite a Sunday leading the Cardinal in double figures with 23 points.

#3 The Cardinal had four players in double figures behind da Silva, Lukas Kisunas 12 points, Michael O’Connell 11, and Jaiden Delaire with 10 points.

#4 The Cardinal lead at the half 35-24 and in the second half the Bears tried to claw back 46-41  and the Cardinal came away with a six point victory 76-70.

#5 The Cardinal face the Colorado Buffaloes (15-5) tonight at Maples Pavilion. The Buffaloes have won five of their last six games. The Cardinal had a three game losing streak before playing defeating Cal in their last two games. How do you see the match tonight with Colorado coming to Palo Alto?
