Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Washington State demolishes Cal 82-51; Williams coverts 32 for WSU

Noah Williams of the Washington State Cougars drives towards the hoop against four Cal Bears defenders. Williams was top scorer with 32 points on Thu Feb 18, 2021 at Pullman WA (WSU photo services)

On the Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 After the Cal Bears (8-16) had a huge victory over the Colorado Buffaloes last Saturday things turned for the worse at Washington State and the Cougars had their way with a convincing 82-51 win on Thursday night.

#2 Matt Bradley led the way in scoring for the Bears with 16 and Andre Kelly followed up with 10 points and both were the only ones in double figures.

#3 No way Noah Williams of the Cougars had 32 points no way because there was no way the defense could have shut him down as Williams worked his way through the Cal defense even in the paint.

#4 Michael when you see someone like that having his way with the defense would it have helped if head coach Mark Fox had double teamed Williams?

#5 It’s onto Seattle and the Washington Huskies (4-17) who have lost seven of their last eight games and the Cal Bears have lost nine of their last ten games both teams clash on Saturday at 7:00pm at UW.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Lots of defense but Cal falls four points short to UCLA 61-57 at Haas Pavilion

The Cal Bears guard Ryan Betley (00) takes a jump shot against the UCLA Bruins guard Jaylen Clark (0) at Haas Pavilion on Thu Jan 21, 2021 (dailycal.org photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Michael, Cal tried to keep within range of one of the Pac 12’s best the UCLA Bruins but it wasn’t enough in a four point loss 61-57.

#2 For all their effort Cal took a 36-32 half time lead and maybe some confidence they might pull another upset off like they did in Utah last Saturday.

#3 The Bruins one to never give up stayed just ahead of Cal winning the second half of the game 29-21 which ended up being a four point win for UCLA.

#4 Despite the loss it was close and the Bears seemed to have improved their play. They beat the Utah Utes in a nine point game in Utah and played a close game with the Bruins has Cal head coach Mark Fox improved both offense and defense and has he changed the playbook to improve the recent games?

#5 Cal gets another test as they face another big force in the Pac 12 the USC Trojans. The Trojans last game on Thursday night against Stanford was canceled due to Coronavirus protocols if they can get healthy for Saturday how do you see Cal matching up with the Trojans?

The Cal Bears Kuany Kuany is thrilled that Cal played some solid second half offense to come back and win over the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City Sat Jan 16, 2021 (AP News photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris how big was this for Cal (7-8) to get a win in Utah (5-6) 72-63 which had been a tough place to play for Cal in past years.

#2 In the first half Cal looked like they were going to go down again as the Utes took a 34-22 lead at half time.

#3 Cal was right back in it in the second half scoring 50 and holding the Utes to just 29 points.

#4 Talk about some of Cal’s high scorers Grant Anticevich is back leading the Bears with 14 points, Makale Forman followed up with 12 points, Jerod Hyder and Andre Kelly both scored 11 points.

#5 The UCLA Bruins (11-2) head to Haas Pavilion for Thu Jan 21st’s game. The Bruins defeated the Washington Huskies (1-11) on Saturday 81-76 completing their sixth straight win and Jules Bernard lead UCLA in scoring 20 points. How do you see this match up on Thursday.

The Colorado Buffaloes guard McKinley Wright  IV (25) drives in front of the Cal Bears guard Makale Forman (10) during Thu Jan 14, 2021’s game at CU Events Center (cubuffs.com photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael, looks from start to finish the Cal Bears (6-8) really had a struggle with the Colorado Buffaloes on Thursday in a 29 point loss 89-60.

#2 Michael talking about the first half of the game Cal head coach Mark Fox said Cal just couldn’t get any offense going taking a 34-23 score at halftime to the dressing room.

#3 The second half the Buffaloes really opened up things with a 55-37 commanding lead led by Colorado top scorer Jabari Walker with 23 points, which meant Cal pretty much was buried. Coach Fox had to be thinking when you get that far in a deficit it’s nearly impossible to come back.

#4 Michael, three players finished in double figures for Cal all in low scoring totals, Andre Kelly 16, Makale Forman 13, and Ryan Betley with 12 points.

#5 It’s off to Utah and the Utes for Cal on Saturday night. The Utes really had their way with the Stanford Cardinal on Thursday with a 79-65 win. The Utes had four scorers in double figures led by Timmy Allen finishing with 22 points.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Bears finally get their first Pac 12 win; Face Colorado on Thursday night

The Cal Bears offense was able to hold off the Washington Huskies eclipsing them with a six point win at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Sat Jan 9, 2021 (calbears.com photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris how relieving is it that Cal (6-7) finally got in the win column with defeat over the Washington Huskies (1-9) on Saturday?

#2 The Bears got a six point win over the Huskies 84-78 did the game appear to look a lot closer and was there any point in the game that the Bears had to be concerned about holding onto the lead.

#3 Matt Bradley is still out of the line up with an injury but Cal forward Andre Kelly has helped picking up the slack with leading the Bears in scoring on Saturday with 22.

#4 Grant Anticevich has made a return with four points and five assists. Talk about how he’s looked in his return and how those assists helped out.

#5 Can the Bears keep it going they head to Colorado (8-3) the Buffaloes are 3-0 at home and have won their last game beating a very tough Oregon Ducks  (9-2) team 79-72 last Thursday. The Buffaloes have a game tonight in Utah (4-4) before hosting Cal on Thu Jan 14th.

Cal Bears basketball game wrap: Strong second half solidifies Bears a win in home opener 60-49 against Nicholls

The Cal Bears Matt Bradley (20) puts some defense on the Nicholls State offense. Bradley led Cal with 26 points in the Bears first win of the 2020-21 season (calbears.com photo)

By Barbara Mason

It had been 275 days since the Cal Bears had played at Haas Pavilion so it has been a long time coming. Monday night the Bears played their home opener taking on Nicholls State. Cal was leading at half-time 23-18. The Bears sealed the deal with a strong second half surge winning by the score of 60-49. Cal outscored Nicholls in the second half 37-31.

Cal’s Matt Brandley turned in a solid performance scoring 26 points in this third game of the season. Grant Anticevich also had 11 points in this game. The Bears sank 10 3-pointers courtesy of starters Anticevich with three and Brandley who also had three. Makale Foreman and Ryan Betley both turned in two 3-pointers each.

While the Bears did trail early by a slim margin 4-3 they really turned it around going on an amazing 18-2 run inside of nine minutes in the first half. Nicholls made it interesting when they tied up the game at 23 early in the second half. It was a 3-pointer by Brandley that put the Bears ahead for the remainder of the game. They never looked back taking this game by a comfortable margin.

The Bears now have a 2-1 record after beating Northwest WA handily while dropping one to Oregon State for their only loss this season. The Bears will meet their biggest challenge Thursday night when they take on Arizona State. That game will also be played at Haas with tip-off at 7:30. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Big Game commences after season of cancelation and loses for both teams

On the very offensive first play of the game between the Cal Bears and Oregon State Beavers running back Jemar Jefferson (6) carried for 75 yards for the opening score on Sat Nov 21st, 2020. Cal is trying to avoid such an offensive volley like this as they kick off with the Stanford Cardinal in the Big Game Fri Nov 27, 2020 at Memorial Stadium (AP News photo)

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 The Big Game has arrived an event that everyone is counting on regardless where either Stanford (0-2) or Cal (0-2) is in the standings both schools look forward to the battle for the ax.

#2 Taking a look at visiting Stanford first, quarterback Davis Mills threw for 327 yards and carried for a touchdown. In spite of a great day of throwing the Cardinal offense couldn’t execute against the Colorado Buffaloes defense scoring in single digits in each of the first three quarters in a 35-32 loss.

#3 The Cal Bears quarterback Chase Garbers threw a game that was good enough to win against the Oregon State Beavers (1-2) in the Bears last game. Garbers with 315 yards passing and three touchdowns but Cal came up short 31-27.

#4 Michael, both teams have lost both of their games and have two games canceled due to Covid-19 for this Big Game today how much of their timing do you expect to be off after two weeks worth of downtime?

#5 It’s the Big Game today at Cal you’ve attended a few Big Games in your career and while it’s a great thing to be their working a game like this behind the scenes you can get a great sense how important it is for both of these schools to battle hard for that ax.

For the second consecutive week, California had a game cancelled due to Coronavirus. The Golden Bears’ scheduled game against Arizona State on Saturday has been cancelled, the schools announced, due to COVID-19 concerns. Later on Friday afternoon the Pac 12 moved Cal to play at the Rose Bowl against UCLA for Sunday morning.

ASU athletic director Ray Anderson said in a statement that a number of positive cases of COVID-19 included “multiple student-athletes and coaching staff members, one of which is Head Coach Herm Edwards.”

Anderson added that the undisclosed number of positive tests put the Sun Devils below the Pac-12’s minimum threshold of 53 available scholarship players under the conference’s game cancellation policy.

Cal won’t have to wait another week as they were supposed to play at Oregon State next Saturday but now will get their first game in at the Rose Bowl. The Bears’ first game against Washington, slated for Nov. 7, was cancelled after Cal had a positive COVID-19 test.

Edwards, meanwhile, said he and his family are “fine,” and encourage people to “take the virus seriously, wear masks, employ social distancing measures and get tested whenever possible.”

Edwards is the second head coach to test positive for COVID-19 this week. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman will miss the Razorbacks’ game against Florida after testing positive.
