Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal heads to the farm to face rival Stanford Sunday; Bears on four game winning streak

#1 For Cal Bears (9-5) head coach Mark Fox the first half of their game against the Pacific Tigers (5-10) on Wednesday is more a learning lesson than one of frustration. Fox said after the first half, “It was going to be an ugly Christmas at halftime.” The Bears were trailing the Tigers at the half 30-25.

#2 Fox got them turned around in the second half with the Bears improved defense and the Bears screening out the Tigers top scorers from the first half Jayden Byers (10 points), Jeremiah Bailey (8 points) and Sam Freeman (8 points).

#3 The Bears on offense poured it on with 48 points in the second half and outscored the Tigers 48-23. The Bears wound up getting the 20 point 73-53 win.

#4 Once again Cal’s Grant Anticevich led Cal with 25 points with three additional Cal scorers in double figures, Jalen Celestine (12 pts), Jordan Shepherd (11 pts), and Andre Kelly (11 pts).

#5 Cal is off to Stanford to face the Cardinal (8-4). The Cardinal who had their last game cancelled against the Vanderbilt Commodores (8-4) due Coronavirus protocols at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The Cardinal have won seven of their last 11 games while the Bears have won six of their last seven games. This one on Sunday could be one for the ages the way they’ve been playing.

#1 Michael, the somewhat heavily favored Santa Clara Broncos (7-4) got a shock as the Cal Bears (6-5) had offensive control of the first and second halves and came up with a eight point 72-60 win at Haas Pavilion last Sat Dec 11.

#2 Michael, the Bears had three scorers in double figures led by Andre Kelly who finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and one assist. Kelly has been getting lots of good looks on offense and has been the pivotal player in scoring.

#3 We can’t ignore guard Jordan Shepherd who finished second in scoring on Saturday with 15 points, six assists, three rebounds one the keys to head coach Mark Fox’s line up.

#4 Unlike last season the Bears when they get behind they get an offensive run, case in point the Broncos tied up the game with six minutes remaining at 53-53 then the Bears went on a 10-2 run with Kelly hitting a key basket and Grant Anticevich scored a jump shot and a lay up.

#5 Next up for Cal they host the Dartmouth Big Green (3-5) at Haas Pavilion on Sun Dec 19th at 1:00 PM PST. The Big Green have lost four straight games and will play Stanford (4-3) tonight before getting a shot at the Bears.

Cal shocks Santa Clara 72-60; Kelly with hot hand scores 18 pts; Bears over .500 at 6-5

The Cal Bears (6-5) Andre Kelly scored 18 points to lead the Bears to a 72-60 win over the much favored Santa Clara Broncos (7-4) at Haas Pavilion on Saturday night in Berkeley. The Bears didn’t even miss a free throw in their eight point win over the Broncos going 10-10 on the free throw line.

The Broncos tied up the game with six minutes remaining at 53-53 when they got a lay up from PJ Pipes. The Bears turned that around with a 10-2 come back run when Kelly hit a basket and Grant Anticevich scored a jump shot and a lay up.

Anticevich had 12 points, eight rebounds and an assist and finished in double figures third in scoring, the Bears Jordan Shepherd scored 15 points and had six assists. The big difference in the game was rebounding as Cal out rebounded the Broncos 44-26. The Broncos only pulled down one offensive rebound which if they had came close to the amount of rebounds that Cal had they could have the game in hand.

The Broncos had three players in scoring double figures Keeshawn Justice 13 points nine rebounds, Jalen Williams 12 points and four rebounds, three assists, and Giordan Williams 11 points and five rebounds.

The Bears host the Dartmouth Big Green (3-5) at Haas Pavilion on Sun Dec 19th at 1:00 PM PST. The Big Green have lost four straight games and will play Stanford (4-3) Thu Dec 16 before getting a shot at the Bears.

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris, the Utah Utes (6-2) just were too much for the Cal Bears (4-5) to try and contain as they were defeated 66-58. The Utes had three scorers in double figures guard Both Gach 19 pts, center Brandon Carlson 12 pits, and Lazar Stefanovic with 12 points.

#2 It was the Utes home opener and they were short handed but you would never know watching the way the took over the offense against the Bears.

#3 Morris, After the Bears had that 73-61 win over the Oregon State Beavers on Thursday was a loss to the Utes of this magnitude surprising?

#4 The Bears in the first half had an eight point lead but that fell apart as the determined Utes on their home floor would eventually catch up for keeps on Sunday night.

#5 Wed Dec 8th at Haas Pavilion Cal hosts the Idaho State Bengals (1-7) who lost to Northern Arizona (4-5) on Saturday night 73-70. A close game it be but the Bengals are a struggling ball club and the Bears after losing to Utah want to get that bad taste of losing out of their mouths.

Bears close out football season with 24-14 home win over Trojans

California wrapped up its 2021 football season on a winning note Sarturday night at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, as the Golden Bears upended Southern California 24-14, completing the Pac-12 slate for both schools.

The Bears’ offense wasn’t overwhelming, but good enough. Christopher Brooks led the Cal ballcarriers with 41 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns. Chase Garbers completed 18 of 21 passes for 183 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and was sacked three times for 15 yards. Trevon Clark caught five passes for 65 yards, and Kekoa Crawford caught four passes for 22 yards.

Vavae Malepeai was the Trojans’ top rusher with 107 yards on 18 attempts. Quarterback Jaxson Darr completed 17 of 26 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and was sacked once. Michael Jackson III caught six passes for 73 yards, Kyle Ford snared five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, and Tahj Washington caught five passes for 57 tards.

Cal (5-7) opened the scoring late in the first quarter, when Dario Longhetto booted a 27-yard field goal. The Trojans (4-8) took a 7-3 lead at 9:46 of the second quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Darr to Ford.

The Golden Bears surged ahead to stay at 10-7 on Brooks’ 1-yard scoring run at 4:54 of the second quarter. Just 48 seconds later, Cal extended it’s lead with a stroke of luck. After Darwin Barlow gained two yards and fumbled on a 3rd-and-2 from the Bears’ 47, teammate Trey Paster picked up the loose ball and ran 55 yards for a Cal touchdown, giving the Bears a 17-7 halftime lead.

Cal extended its lead to 24-7 at 6:30 of the fourth quarter when Brooks scored his second touchdown of the night, a 2-yard run.

USC cut its deficit to 24-14 on a 30-yard Miller Moss touchdowbn pass to K.D. Nixon with 1:53 remaining in the game.

Dart was knocked out in the third quarter due to an apparent concussion. The loss ended the term of interim coach Donte Williams, who took over after Clay Helton was fired earlier this season. Lincoln Riley was recently hired to get the one-time power back on track.

#1 Daniel, things have been going well for the Cal Bears (4-7) they have won three of their last five games and have recovered nicely since they had that run with Covid with a little over half the team was on the Covid list and they took that tough loss to the Arizona Wildcats (1-11) back on 10-3.

#2 The Bears had a bye week and then met the Stanford Cardinal (3-9) and crushed them in their own Stadium on Sat Nov 20th 41-11 in the Big Game.

#3 Then there was the Bears last game last Sat Nov 27 at UCLA (8-4) where Cal got crushed 42-14, Bears quarterback Chase Garbers struggled to get throws in the end zone and the Cal offense were victims of three and outs.

#4 The Bears defense spent a lot of time on the field against the Bruins and that defense had a hard time trying to stop the Bruins from moving down field.

#5 So the Bears try and go back to the drawing board as they host the USC Trojans (4-7) in a make up game that was postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak on the Cal football team. The Trojans lost their last game in a narrow contest against BYU 35-31 at USC. Daniel how do you see the Bears and Trojans matching up this Saturday at Cal.

#1 Jerry, the Cal Bears (4-7) play their final game of the regular season against the USC Trojans (4-7) this will be part of a make up game as it was postponed due to the Bears having half the team on Covid 19 protocols.

#2 The Bears just simply didn’t have a chance against UCLA Bruins (8-4) last Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena 42-14. The Bruins after the first quarter just simply took over scoring in double digits in each quarter.

#3 The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a huge win over the Minnesota Vikings and their post season hopes are not dashed they’ve getting great offense from wide receiver Brandon Ayiuk and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Talk about the job Ayiuk and Garoppolo has done and how you see them matching up against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday.

#4 How badly will the San Francisco Giants miss having pitcher Kevin Gausman who went 14-6 ERA 2.81 on their starting rotation as he joins the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2022 season?

#5 Jerry, the New York Mets scored huge this week obtaining former Oakland A’s players Starling Marte and Mark Canha on Wednesday. Talk about how the A’s will miss Marte and Canha and how they’ll be a plus in the Mets line up.

#1 Morris’ after Cal Bears (3-4) loses to the Florida Gators (6-0) and the Seton Hall Pirates (5-1) there’s nothing like some home cooking and beating a pretty decent team the Fresno Bulldogs (5-1) 65-57.

#2 Prior to the loses to Florida and Seton Hall the Bears had back to back victories over San Diego and Southern Utah which isn’t the 1972 UCLA Bruins but that was showing much more than the kind of season they had last year.

#3 Total team effort you can see the distribution of the ball three players in double figures guard Jordan Shepherd 17 points, forward Andre Kelly 14 points, and forward Grant Anticevich with 13 points.

#4 Morris, if you had to point to one or two things that head coach Mark Fox has changed to get this team on track what are some of those changes.

#5 Cal hosts the Oregon State Beavers (1-6) on Thu Dec 2 at Haas Pavilion. The Beavers were beaten in their last game by the Penn State Nittany Lions (4-2) on Saturday night. The Beavers on a six game losing streak haven’t won a game since their opener Nov 9th against Portland State 73-64. Morris break down this match up on Thursday night.

#1 Daniel, the Cal Bears (4-6) last Saturday in the Big Game crushed the Stanford Cardinal (3-8) 41-11 after Cal has won three of it’s last four games do you view this game as one more brick in the wall a good push toward getting a bowl game birth?

#2 Daniel, Cal quarterback Chase Garbers threw 17-26 for 246 yards, two touchdowns, one interception. It was his first game back since the two week hiatus when over 24 players were out for Covid 19 protocols forcing Cal to play red shirts and call ups against the Arizona Wildcats (1-8) in a game they lost Nov 6th 10-3 and to cancel the following week’s game and win the Big Game last Sat Nov 20th.

#3 It was pretty much landslide game for the Bears last Sunday getting scoring 14 points in the second quarter, 13 points in the third quarter, and 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal defense just couldn’t stop Cal on their home field.

#4 One of the luxories that Garbers had last Saturday against Stanford was he had time in the pocket to throw and he was able to find a target just about every time dropping back.

#5 Cal takes on the UCLA Bruins (7-4) the Bruins have done their own crushing on offense in their last two games taking out the Colorado Buffaloes (3-7) 44-20 and the USC Trojans (4-6) 62-33. UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson threw for 349 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions against the Trojans.

Golden Bears enjoy a big day for offense and defense in 41-11 win over Cardinal

California benefitted from a strong defensive effort, along with the offense hitting on all cylanders as the Bears won the 124th annual Big Gane 41-11.

The Bears (4-6 overall, 3-4 Pac-12) stopped the home team twice on downs inside their own 5-yard line. The Csl offense, was back to making big plays – three of them for 75 yards or more,

The second time Stanford failed to score from inside the Cal 5 early in the second quarte, the game remained scoreless until four plays later, when Chase Garbers fired an 84-yard scoring pass to Trevon Clark for Cal’s first touchdown. It was also the longest scoring pass play in Big Game history.

Altogether, the Bears rolled up a Big Game-record 636 yards of total offense, breaking the old Big Game record of 603 yards that the Cardinal accumulated in 2013. And, the 41 points was the most Cal has scored in the annual rivalry game since 2009.

It’s difficult to select a single player of the game, but you could split this one five ways and give it to the Cal offensive line.

Garbers, back after missing two weeks due to COVID-19 protocol, had plenty of time to in the pocket, and was not sacked. He completed 17-of-26 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns and was picked off once. Garbers also ran for 59 yards and tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Christopher Brooks to make it 14-0 with 5:38 to play in the first half, and the rout was on.

Cal had its running game going as well. Brooks rushed for 131 yards and Marcel Dancy added 92 more – 76 of them on a third-quarter touchdown run – as the Bears gained 352 yards rushing.

The Bears even used a little razzle-dazzle in the third quarter when wide reciever Kikoa Crawford took a lateral from Garbers and connected with Clark on a 34-yard gain, putting the ball on the Cardinal 6, setting up a Dario Longhetto 24-yard field goal. Clark finished the game with 135 recieving yards on three catches.

With the win, the Golden Bears still have a slim chance of playing in a bowl game, but have to win out against UCLA and USC to do it.
