On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael, the Cal Bears (11-17) struggled throughout much of their game against the Utah Utes (11-16) on Saturday but towards the end of the game Cal cut the Utes lead to two but the Utes were able to defend and hang on for the 60-58 win.

#2 The Utes didn’t have a field goal in six minutes but were still able to keep the lead right there did the Bears just fail to execute and take advantage?

#3 Cal got close twice coming within two points the first time was with 19 seconds left in the game and the Utes Lazar Stefanovic hit a pair of free throws before the Bears Jalen Celestine canned a three with five seconds remaining and Utah escaped.

#4 The Bears missed eight of their last 10 shots, and went more than four minutes without a field goal before Celestine’s three pointer in the final seconds.

#5 The Stanford Cardinal (15-12) are next for the Bears they have lost five of their last seven games and lost their last game to the Colorado Buffaloes (18-9) 70-53. The Cardinal have been hurting on scoring Michael how do you see Stanford at Cal this Saturday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley?

The Cal Bears guard Jordan Shepherd led Cal with 15 points on Tue Feb 1, 2022 against the Stanford Cardinal at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto (photo by the Cal Bears)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 The compressed schedule that has the Cal Bears (9-13) playing five times in 10 days, along with Tuesday’s physical play clearly impacted them in a second half that was controlled by the hosts.

#2 For the Stanford Cardinal (13-7) Jaden Delaire and freshman Harrison Ingram led Stanford with 12 points a piece. Spencer Jones and Michael O’Connell each had nine points, and fifth starter James Keefe with 8 points and 11 rebounds.

#3 The Bears Andre Kelly was out of the line up with a leg injury he got when he played against USC on Saturday and Lars Thiemann was put to good use with the most minutes 32 of his career and had with 11 points, six rebounds in 32 minutes.

#4 “I do think that we wore down a little bit in the second half,” coach Mark Fox said. “Certainly we missed Andre on the offensive end, but defensively we gave ourselves a chance.”

#5 Michael, the (12-8) Washington Huskies are coming to Cal on Thursday night the last time the two teams met at UW in Seattle on Jan 12 the Huskies took a nine point win over the Bears 64-55. In that game Jordan Shepherd was the only player who managed double figures with 12 in the loss.

The Washington Huskies Terrell Brown Jr (23) exults after teaching the Cal Bears a lesson about defending him. Brown led the Huskies in scoring with 21 points at the Alaskan Airlines Arena in Seattle on Wed Jan 11, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 The Washington Huskies (7-7) Terrell Brown was well defended by the Cal Bears (9-8) on Wednesday night in the first half of the game and came back scoring 18 of his 21 points in the second half.

#2 Brown led the Huskies in just impressive offense he worked the inside to get shots, worked the boards and wasn’t afraid to take the outside shot.

#3 For the Bears It seemed like anyone that head coach Mark Fox put out on the floor was getting extinguished everyone finished in a single digit except Jordan Shepherd who scored 12 points.

#4 The Huskies led Cal by seven at the half and got the win by 66-54. In both halves of the game the Huskies and Brown just out hustled Cal every step of the way.

#5 Cal will be at it again when they try to get back in the win column against the Washington State Cougars (9-6) at Pullman which could be a very tough place for the Bears to try and snap a three game losing streak.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Michael you had a chance to see the Cal Bears (9-5) pick up their fifth straight win at Haas Pavilion on Sunday night defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils (5-8) in rather handed fashion 74-50 the Bears had all their shots falling for them in this one.

#2 The Bears dominated even with their inside game and got tremendous help from Jordan Shepherd (16 pts), Andre Kelly (13 points) and Grant Anticevich (10 pits) the three top scorers.

#3 You talked about Cal head coach Mark Fox challenging the defense in keeping the Sun Devils under 50 points and game’s end the defense did just do that hold the Sun Devils only to 50 points in the 24 point win.

#4 The suddenly ascendant Bears put together their best 40 minutes of basketball this season, and throttled ASU, 74-50, bringing an end to the Sun Devils’ seven-game win streak in the series between the schools.

Cal Bears Andre Kelly seen throwing down against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene in file photo. Kelly led Cal in scoring with 18 points in their last game against the Santa Clara Broncos on Sat Dec 11, 2021 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley (Cal Bears Athletics file photo)

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Michael, the somewhat heavily favored Santa Clara Broncos (7-4) got a shock as the Cal Bears (6-5) had offensive control of the first and second halves and came up with a eight point 72-60 win at Haas Pavilion last Sat Dec 11.

#2 Michael, the Bears had three scorers in double figures led by Andre Kelly who finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and one assist. Kelly has been getting lots of good looks on offense and has been the pivotal player in scoring.

#3 We can’t ignore guard Jordan Shepherd who finished second in scoring on Saturday with 15 points, six assists, three rebounds one the keys to head coach Mark Fox’s line up.

#4 Unlike last season the Bears when they get behind they get an offensive run, case in point the Broncos tied up the game with six minutes remaining at 53-53 then the Bears went on a 10-2 run with Kelly hitting a key basket and Grant Anticevich scored a jump shot and a lay up.

#5 Next up for Cal they host the Dartmouth Big Green (3-5) at Haas Pavilion on Sun Dec 19th at 1:00 PM PST. The Big Green have lost four straight games and will play Stanford (4-3) tonight before getting a shot at the Bears.

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael:

#1 Cal (8-18) who suffered another loss their tenth out of their last 11 games this time in close fashion to the visiting Oregon State Beavers (12-11) on Thursday night 59-57.

#2 Michael did you think it would get worse after they lost in Seattle to a struggling Washington Huskies (5-19) team on their last road trip last Saturday?

#3 Cal had a good first half taking the lead at intermission 33-28 they were getting some good defense and the Beavers just couldn’t covert enough to keep up going into the locker room five points down.

#4 In the second half the Beavers outscored Cal by seven and it was Cal who couldn’t keep the defense up and to make matters worse a tough loss on the home floor.

#5 Cal hosts it’s last game of the regular season against the Oregon Ducks (15-5) on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion the Ducks have won seven of their last eight games.
