The California Bears battled through two overtimes eventually losing to the Butler Bulldogs 97-90. The Bears fought through the first overtime but came up short only managing another tie. Going into the second overtime Cal couldn’t keep up with Butler. The Bulldogs won the second overtime 14-7 and the game 97-90.

The California Bears (3-6) took on the Butler Bulldogs (8-2) Saturday afternoon. The Bears are coming off a nice win over the Santa Clara Broncos last Saturday 84-69.

The first half of this game was a close one. California won the opening half 37-34 taking the lead into the locker room at halftime. Butler would respond in the second half winning it by the score of 39-36. As regulation expired this game was tied at 73. The game had been a battle from tipoff and would continue into the first overtime.

The first overtime of this game was a thriller with neither team able to capture much of a lead and this resulted in a second tie between the two teams. At 4:14 in the second overtime the two teams remained tied at 85. At 3:23 the Bulldogs began to make a move and they did not let down.

Butler took the lead and built on it for the remainder of the overtime eventually winning 97-90. This was a horrible disappointment for the Bears who had played so well throughout the entire game and the first overtime. The Bulldogs just wore them down in the second overtime.

Fardaws Aimaq had 24 points for California along with 16 rebounds followed by Jalen Cone who had a great game hitting 7 of his 17 3-point attempts. He finished with 23 points. Keonte Kennedy made a nice contribution with 20 points and Jaylon Tyson added 16 points. Cal had led by as much as 12 points in the first half but could not maintain the lead.

Posh Alexander had the high for the Bulldogs with 21 points followed closely by Jahmyl Tekfort with 20. The starting lineup for the Bulldogs had a great game but their bench pushed them over the top with 21 points to the Bears 5 points off the bench.

This was Butler’s fifth win in a row. They had shot at 52% to Cal’s 46%. The two teams were a percentage point apart on three’s; Butler with 42% and Cal with 41% in a game well-played by both teams.

Next Saturday the Cal Bears will play Mississippi in San Antonio. This will be a challenge for California taking on the 8-0 Ole Miss. Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Cal tries to get that first win of the season Sunday against Santa Clara

Grant Newell who scored a career 17 points said he would rather have wins than be the top point scorer takes a shot against the Butler Bulldogs guard Simas Lukosius (41) on Sat Dec 10, 2022 (Cal Bears photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Grant Newell and Devon Askew led Cal in scoring with 17 points each against the Butler Bulldogs who wiped out the Bears 82-58.

#2 Three of the top shooters for Cal Lar Tiemann, Newell and Askew despite their efforts it’s just not enough for Cal as they can’t buy a win at (0-11).

#3 Newell’s 17 points was a career high and was 7-13 shooting Saturday it was Newell’s best game of his career.

#4 For Askew he had that outstanding game against USC back on Wed Nov 30th scoring 23 points, scored 25 points against Arizona on Sun Dec 4th, sat out due to health reasons against Eastern Washington on Wed Dec 7th and scored 17 points against Butler last Saturday.

#5 Michael talk about how important it was for Cal to take a full week off as they get ready for the Santa Clara Broncos (9-3) for a 2pm tip this Sunday at Santa Clara which is considered their third true road game.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Bears clawed and battle but came up two points short

The Cal Bears guard Joel Brown drives against Eastern Washington at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Wed Dec 7, 2022 (Cal Bears photo)

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael:

#1 The Cal Bears (0-9) received bad news before Wednesday’s contest against Eastern Washington when they announced that leading scorer Devin Askew and freshman ND Okafor would be unavailable due to health and safety protocols.

#2 Then the Bears coughed up 17 turnovers and never led in a 50-48 loss to the Eagles of the Big Sky Conference, a team they had beaten in all three, previous meetings.

#3 The Bears trailed 45-36 with 5:22 remaining only to rally and tie the contest at 48 with 33 seconds left on Joel Brown’s made free throw. But Tyreese Davis’ layup on EWU’s next possession gave the visitors their winning margin.

#4 In the final seconds, Kuany Kuany missed a three-pointer that would have given the Bears a lead. Sam Alajiki’s foul put EWU’s Casey Jones on the foul line, but he missed both attempts. Brown’s desperation 3-point attempt then fell short at the final buzzer as Cal loses by two points 50-48.

#5 Cal hosts the Butler Bulldogs (8-2) on Saturday afternoon at 2pm at Haas Pavilion how tough will that one be for the Bears as they seek their first win of the season?

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Stanford’s tough fight with Bulldogs; Stanford hosts Wilmington Sunday

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 Jerry, talk about the Big Game last Saturday against Cal at Stanford Stadium. For Cardinal quarterback David Mills, he gave it his best, but Stanford fell in a very narrow game.

#2 Cal was able to play successfully on both sides of the football and come up with two touchdowns in the four quarter to get by Stanford by four points in one for the ages as Cal has not won in Stanford since 2009.

#3 In Stanford men’s basketball: A tough loss for Stanford men’s (7-1) fall in their first loss of the season after winning seven straight games to the Butler Bulldogs (7-0) 68-67, a one-point loss.

#4 It seems like Butler can beat up on the big schools with a perfect record so far. Is it fair to say look for them in March?

#5 UNC Wilmington (5-3) is next to face the Cardinal on Sunday at Maples Pavilion. Jerry talks about how he sees this game.
