Golden State Warriors podcast with Barbara Mason: Warriors take on Nets at Barclay Center in Brooklyn tonight

For all his efforts Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry who scored 60 points against the Atlanta Hawks a season high couldn’t get the Warriors past the Hawks at State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Sat Feb 3, 2024 (AP News photo)

On the Golden State Warriors podcast with Barbara Mason:

#1 The Golden State Warriors had to be frustrated getting a 60 point effort out of guard Stephen Curry in their last game against the Atlanta Hawks at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta only to lose 141-134 on Saturday night.

#2 Once again Barbara we talk about Curry and how’s he carrying the weight of the team this one was a season high for him scoring those 60 points.

#3 Curry said it “sucks to have something and nothing to show for it” after that big effort what’s worse the Warriors now drop four games under .500 as they sit in 12th place in the Western Conference.

#4 Curry also said it was frustrating that the Warriors could have had a couple plays here and a couple there and could have won the game in the seven point loss to Atlanta.

#5 The Warriors play the third of this five game road trip against the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. The Nets have lost six of their last ten games and are 11th in the Eastern Conference of the NBA. How do you see these two teams tipping off tonight?

Despite 60 Points From Curry Warriors Fall to Hawks 141-134 In Overtime

For his 60 point scoring effort Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry can only wipe his face with his jersey (30) as the Atlanta Hawks win it at State Farm Arena in Atlanta in overtime on Sat Feb 3, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors (21-25) fought hard throughout the entire game falling in overtime to the Atlanta Hawks (22-27)141-134. Warrior guard Stephen Curry hit 22 points in the fourth quarter finishing with 60 points.

There were just too many obstacles that the Warriors had to deal with. The ankle injury to Andrew Wiggins was the last straw with Chris Paul, Moses Moody, Gary Payton Jr and Dario Saric all out for this game.

Post game wrap: The Warriors took control in the opening quarter leading after the first 12 minutes 33-28. The Hawks answered in the second quarter not only winning it 36-31 but tying up this game at halftime. Heading into the locker room these two teams were dead even at 64.

The Warriors had a very balanced offensive attack in the first half between twos and threes. They did a great job on Trae Young limiting open threes as well as keeping him off the foul line.

On top of all that Golden State kept the turnovers to a minimum. All was going great for Golden State until the Warriors lost yet another player. The Warriors who were already short-handed lost Andrew Wiggins who suffered a left ankle injury in the first half.

The second half of this game could prove to be a very tough one for Golden State.

After three quarters played this game was once again tied with the score 89 apiece. The Warriors were down negative 11 off turnovers and they were indeed thrilled to be tied in this game.

They were not playing particularly well so a tie was indeed acceptable. Golden State was in need of Jonathan Kuminga and Klay Thompson who both had quiet starts. Brandin Podziemski and Lester Quinones were both having a very nice game off the bench.

Curry came off the bench to start the fourth quarter. He already had 34 points and was doing his best to will his team to victory. The Warriors came from being eight points down to take the lead with eight minutes left in the game.

Golden State was dying from downtown going 12-of-44, an awful night from beyond the arc at 27%. The Warriors kept having to come from behind in the second half. How many times would they have to continue to do this before fatigue took over.

With under six minutes left on the clock the Warriors fell behind once again but battled back to take a 107-104 lead. It was a crazy game. Golden State was shooting at 43%, horrible from downtown yet had taken a 109-107 lead.

At 4:36 another tie, 109 apiece. The question now would be which team would have enough in the tank to finish this game. The final three minutes saw lead changes and more ties. Curry started hitting those critical three’s he is famous for.

Hitting three triples in the final minutes gave the Warriors a 121-119 lead. Curry had scored 20 points in the fourth quarter. With 1:06 left in the game it was again a tie at 121. Again it was the closer Curry who broke the tie giving the Warriors a 123-121 lead with 13.1 on the clock.

The Hawks would not be denied and tied up the game at 123 with 4.1 left in regulation. This game went into overtime . The Warriors have ten straight losses in overtimes on the road. Kuminga had fouled out and the team was without Wiggins.

Golden State would have to dig deep to win this one. Curry had 52 points in regulation, but how much more could Curry endure.

The story of the overtime was missed open shots, untimely fouls by the Warriors. In a flash the Hawks had a 134-123 lead. The Hawks went on a 15-2 run and the Warriors gas tank had run dry.

This was a tough loss for the Warriors. Curry had an amazing game with 60 points and both Quinones and Podziemski had a nice showing off the bench. The loss of Kuminga also really hurt the team in the overtime.

Post game notes: After taking of business in Memphis Friday night against the Grizzlies 121-101, the Warriors took on the Hawks Saturday night. The Hawks dismissed the Phoenix Suns Friday night 129-120.

The biggest threat that Golden State faced in this game was Trae Young who scored 32 points in Friday nights game. Young was the difference against Golden State with a team leading 35 points in the ten point win by the Hawks. Dejounte Murray was another huge threat to the Warriors, Murray tallied 19 points for the Hawks finishing fourth in scoring.

Monday night the Warriors will take on the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center. The Warriors beat the Nets back in mid-December in a close game 124-120 and the Nets will be looking to even the series. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM PT.

Sizzling Clippers Too Hot Too Handle for Golden State 121-113

Los Angeles Clippers guard Terrace Mann (14) goes up to take a shot against the Golden State Warriors Jonathan Kuminga (front right) at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Thu Dec 14, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors (10-14) got close in this game, in fact it was a one-point game in the fourth quarter 103-102. The Los Angeles Clippers (14-10) hung tough in a very close match-up winning their sixth in a row. The final was 121-113.

Thursday night the Warriors (10-14) traveled to Los Angeles to take on the Clippers (14-10). The starting roster for this game had been changed up due to the indefinite suspension of Draymond Green. Andrew Wiggins started the game on the bench and Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski started the game.

Kuminga has been playing lights out basketball and got a great chance to continue to prove himself with 15 points. The Warriors will be missing Draymond Green and Gary Payton II especially on the defensive end. The Clippers are really clicking right now and have won five in a row and will be looking for number six. These guys are playing outstanding basketball and it will be a tough call.

Game recap: This game was a close one as it got underway with the Clippers leading after the first 12 minutes 29-28. Los Angeles began to get some separation leading at the half 69-56. The Clippers had really turned it on winning the second quarter 40-28.

The Warriors were struggling trying to keep James Harden from penetrating their defense and those pesky turnovers began to rear their ugly heads as well as misses from the line. Kawhi Leonard was also giving the Warriors a run for their money. At the half Harden had 18 points and Leonard had 17. Golden State needed to find some rhythm in the second half of this game.

The Warriors trimmed a 16 point Clipper lead to nine in the third quarter. At 7:00 in the third the Clippers had hung onto a 86-73 lead. Klay Thompson was keeping the Warriors in the game hitting 7 of 9 three’s with 27 points so far in this game.

The Clippers refused to cool off putting a lot of pressure on the Warrior offense. Every time the Warriors threatened, the Clippers had the answer. Golden State would inch closer and Los Angeles would shut it down.

With 2.5 left on the clock in the quarter Chris Paul hit a three to cut the Clipper lead to six 99-93. After trailing by 16, the Warriors had now pulled to within six points. They had cut down on the turnovers protecting the ball well and had won the quarter 37-30.

As the fourth quarter got underway the Warriors began to put on a lot of pressure in the paint and Golden State took over as the aggressor against one of the best teams in the league. With 8:51 left on the clock it was a one-point game 103-102 in favor of the Clippers.

The Warriors had gone on a 16 to 4 run in a real battle. With under seven minutes left in the game the Clippers began to push back leading 108-102. The Warriors needed to make some buckets down the stretch because the Clippers were doing some great defensive things.

Los Angeles is the third best defensive team in the league and they were putting on quite a show in this game. Thompson hit his eighth three with under six minutes and it was a fourth point game 111-107.

Misses in the final three minutes by Golden State was the difference in this game, one of the reason that they came up short. Stephen Curry was 0-3 in the fourth quarter as Los Angeles closed out this game 121-113.

Thompson was the high for the Warriors with 30 points. The Warriors had a tough time with the extensive weapons that the Clippers possess. Golden State dropped to a 10-14 record.

The Clippers James Harden finished with 28 points followed by Leonard scoring 27. Amir Coffey had 18 and off the bench Norman Powell with 21. The team was also not at full strength with Paul George out due to left hip soreness in this game. They will be chasing number seven Saturday as they take on the Knicks.

Saturday night the Golden State Warriors return home to host the Brooklyn Nets at Chase Center with a 5:30pm PT tip off.

Kings’ Record-Breaking Victory 131-118 Sparks Three-Point Success Buzz

Photo by Mauricio Segura: The Sacramento Kings Trey Lyels slam dunks in the third quarter against the Brooklyn Nets on Mon Dec 11, 2023

By Mauricio Segura

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings lit the beam Monday night with an exhilarating, record-breaking victory of 131-118 over the Brooklyn Nets.

They not only secured the win but also etched a new chapter in their franchise history by setting a remarkable record for 3-pointers—totaling an impressive 25. This achievement also marked the second instance this season where three of their players managed to dish out seven assists or more.

The Kings are currently riding a wave of success, having emerged victorious in 11 of their last 15 games. DeAaron Fox has been at the forefront of this impressive run, showcasing his skills and leadership, hinting at a potential MVP season for the former Wildcat.

Fresh from a dazzling fourth-quarter performance where he scored 23 points over the Phoenix Suns Friday night, Fox continued his stellar play by making significant contributions in the long-range shooting game. Alongside Trey Lyels, the duo combined for an astounding 10 three-pointers. In total, Sacramento demonstrated their prowess by shooting 25 of 45, boasting an impressive 55.6% success rate from beyond the arc.

The Kings dominated the game from start to finish. Despite Nets forward Mikal Bridges breaking through the Kings’ defense with an impressive stat line of 22 points, five assists, and five rebounds, his efforts were not enough to inspire the rest of Brooklyn’s squad against Sacramento’s formidable defense.

While the Nets managed to narrow the gap to four points (71-67) with Cameron Thomas’ three-pointer midway through the third quarter and within seven points (89-74) with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Sacramento’s relentless barrage of three-pointers allowed them to pull away and secure the final, resounding victory.

Contributions from Domantas Sabonis were instrumental, as he added 15 points, 16 rebounds, and nine assists, further solidifying the Kings’ dominance. This victory marked the Kings’ third consecutive win against the Nets, including a season sweep from the previous year. Keegan Murray also played a crucial role with a scoring output of 24 points, while Malik Monk contributed 21 points and nine assists to seal the Kings’ triumphant night.

The Kings fly down to face the Clippers Tuesday night, but will return on Thursday against the Wizards in what will be the beginning of a six-game home stand.

Despite Slow Start Sacramento Kings Handle Phoenix Suns 114-106

By Barbara Mason

The Sacramento Kings (12-8) had a bit of a slow start in the first half of their matchup against the Phoenix Suns (12-10) trailing 59-50. They really got onboard in the second half winning the third quarter 33-12. The final was 114-106 extending Sacramento’s season record to 12-8.

Friday night, the Kings took on Suns at Footprint Center. The Kings come into this game after losing to the New Orleans Pelicans in the quarterfinal game of the NBA In-season tournament 127-117 on Mon Dec 4. The Suns also lost last Tuesday in their quarterfinal game against the Los Angeles Lakers in a close one 106-103. Both teams are looking to get back on the winning track.

Game recap: Both the first and second quarters went in favor of the Suns. The two opening quarters were close but Phoenix had the upper hand. The Suns won the first quarter 26-24 as well as the second quarter 33-26. Phoenix took a 59-50 lead into the locker room at the half. So far it was all Phoenix in the first half.

The Kings turned this game around in the third quarter winning it 33–12 in a blowout and took the lead after three quarters 83-71. Sacramento really got their offense going from the field as well as from downtown.

Both teams were protecting the ball well but the Kings were also rebounding the ball with more success than the Suns. The Kings needed to keep the pressure on the Suns going into the fourth quarter.

These are two evenly matched teams and the final quarter of this game would be a battle. So far in this game, the Sacramento starting roster was not really up to par although there was still one more quarter of basketball to play.

The team would need their clutch player De’Aaron Fox to step up and finish this game. Kevin Huerter played 17 minutes through three quarters but was a disappointing 0-4 from the field. He came off the court with a single point in the game.

The fourth quarter saw Fox start to really heat up. With under six minutes left in the game he had 26 points to his credit. Off the bench the Kings got some great work from Malik Monk with 13 points and Sasha Vezenkov with 14.

With 5:31 left in the game Sacramento had taken a 103-92 lead. The Suns got dangerously close with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game 103-96. The Kings were letting the Suns back into the game. Sacramento took command of this game in the final minutes and left the Suns in the dust.

Fox caught fire in the fourth quarter scoring fifteen points and finishing with 34 points in this game. Domantas Sabonis had 15 points and 17 rebounds. They also got some nice bench work from Vezenkov, Monk and Keon Ellis. This was a solid win for Sacramento against a tough contender.

Next up for the Kings will be the Brooklyn Nets at Golden 1 Center in a close matchup. Tipoff for this game Monday night is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Kings eliminated from tournament. Lose to Pelicans 127-117

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Monday night. The Kings were set to host the first game of the in-season tournament as they welcomed in the New Orleans Pelicans. The Kings last played Saturday night as they defeated the Denver Nuggets 123-117.

The Pelicans also last played on Saturday, as they were defeated by the Chicago Bulls 124-118 on the road. The Pelicans had embarrassed the Kings in the last two contests on the road. The tip-off was set for 7 PM PST on TNT. The Kings fell to the Pelicans 127-117 on Monday night.

In the first quarter, the fans in attendance were in for a roller coaster. The Kings came out hot and jumped out to an early lead. The Kings, at one point, led by 15 points. However, the Pelicans roared back to shrink that lead down to one point by the end of the quarter. It was a wild quarter you would only assume would not repeat itself. The Kings outscored the Pelicans 36-35 in the first quarter and looked to right the ship in the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the bizarre play from the Kings continued. After starting the game red hot, the Kings were struggling mightily to score and get any stops on defense. It was a full-blown meltdown for the Kings after the midway point in the first quarter. The Pelicans outscored the Kings 34-25 in the second quarter to take the lead going into halftime. The Pelicans led the Kings 69-61 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Kings stopped the bleeding. However, they were still outscored by the Pelicans 31-30 in the quarter. The defensive assignment the Pelicans give the Kings is not a good matchup. The Kings continued the struggle on the defensive end to get stops. As the quarter winded down and we headed to the fourth quarter, the Kings were trailing 100-91.

In the fourth quarter, it was more of the same. The Kings weren’t able to muster any comeback against the Pelicans as they lost 127-117. The Pelicans outscored the Kings in the final quarter 27-26. It was a disappointing game for the Kings after steering the game so hot.

The Kings appeared poised to win the game early but that quickly vanished. The Kings were led in defeat by De’Aaron Fox with 30 points. The Pelicans best performance came from Brandon Ingram who scored 30 points.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Brooklyn Nets on Monday, Dec 11th, after the in-season tournament break concludes. The Kings will take on the Nets at 7 PM PST.

After 17 years of waiting Kings clinch first winning season with win over Nets 101-96

BROOKLYN, NY. — The Sacramento Kings (42-27) clinched their first winning season in 17 years with a 101-96 win over the Brooklyn Nets (39-31) at Barclays Center on Thursday night.

It was the first time that the Kings have finished above .500 since the 2005-06 season when they earned a 44-38 record.

Despite the milestone, Kings head coach Mike Brown said he doesn’t equate March 16 with 42 wins and making the playoffs. The Kings are focused on “trying to get as many wins as possible,” he said.

The game was tied at 41 with less than 3 1/2 minutes to go in the first quarter. Domantas Sabonis made a triple that set off a 13-0 run for Sacramento. Domantas scored 24 points, including nearly 20 by halftime.

Sacramento led by as many as 17 points, and the Nets made a comeback effort in the second half that came close but fell short. De’Aaron Fox had 18 points. Kessler Edwards contributed 10 points.

“We were trying to get a win like that all year,” said Brown.

The Kings made the playoffs eight straight times under then-head coach Rick Adelman, the last being in the 2005-06 season, but had a losing record all the other years since moving to Sacramento.

“I think being here for over four years now, and seeing the bottom – the very bottom – and to see the frustration of fans and the people in the organization, I think it’s nice to be on the other side it,” said Kings forward Harrison Barnes. “A lot of people, they don’t get a chance to stay in an organization long enough to see the good times and the bad, they just see the bad side. So I consider myself fortunate to be able to be part of this moment.”

The Kings (42-27) are second in the western conference. They continue their road trip on Saturday against the Washington Wizards. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.
