#1 What was the turning point or decisive play that ultimately decided the game? The 51‑yard touchdown pass by Cal’s QB Jaron‑Keawe Sagapolutele late in the game. Cal came away with a 28-24 win.

Cardinal Grounded the Eagles 78-60 inside Maples; Raynaud School’s Double-Double King

STANFORD. Calif. — Maxime Raynaud’s record breaking 21st Double-Double helped his Stanford Cardinal (18-10, 10-7 ACC) preserve Palo Alto as a NO-FLY Zone for the visiting Boston College Eagles (12-16, 4-13 ACC) 78-60, while maintaining their home-court conference dominance (8-1) on the Farm..

Raynaud was on a mission right away from the scoring side of his game.  He not only converted the first bucket of the game, but the initial seven points for the Cardinal.  He was on fire from beyond the Arc, and making hook shots from either hand.

Stanford’s defense was also steller and sturdy as their mascot (Tree).  They held their Massachusetts opponent to a putrid 27% from the field, and 18% from threeland, in the first 20 minutes of gameplay.  The Cardinal, on the other hand, shot 54% & 46% respectively for the home squad.

When the recess horn went off, the Cardinal held their largest lead of 18 points, 37-19.  This was assisted with an 8-0 run and controlling the clock, by leading for more than 18 minutes (90%) of the first stanza,

Raynaud led all players with 16 points, and was the lone player in double figures.  However, he had a low count of rebounds (3), possibly interrupting his chance to eclipse school history.  Junior guard Dion Brown led the Eagles in scoring with a mild five points.

In the second half, Stanford scratched first again with a Jaylin Blakes bucket.  That immediately put the Cardinal up by 20 points.  By the end of the conference battle, Stanford increased their advantage to as high as 27 points, but settled for an 18-point victory (78-60), after 40 minutes of regulation action.  This was also the same margin at halftime.

Boston College shot an impressive 50% from the field in the second half, while hitting a sizzling 56% from behind the 3-point line.  They equaled the Cardinal in points production (41) in the last half; however, being down by 18 midway through the contest, that effort will keep you in the same hole, down by 18 after 20 minutes.

Several players joined Raynaud in the double-figures stratosphere, including three of his teammates.  Maxime totaled 23 points, and grabbed 10 rebounds (7 in 2nd Half), placing him on top of the Cardinal’s list of double-doubles in a single season. Twenty-One D-D’s surpasses Stanford legend Adam Keefe, with several games still left in the season’

Oziyah Sellers (18), Chisom Okpara (15) and Jaylin Blakes all joined their Senior record-breaker in double-digit scoring.  As for Boston College, two players reached that plateau.  Senior Chad Venning led the Eagles with 13 points, while his fellow senior teammate Roger McFarlane chipped in 11 points of his own efforts.

The Cardinal will next be in action, Saturday, March 1, as they host the Southern Methodist Mustangs at 2:00 P M PT on the ACC Network.  Boston College heads across the Bay on the same date to take on Cal at 7:00 PM PT on ESPN2/U.

Cal Bears mens basketball podcast:

#1 The Cal MBB (3-4) trip to Boston College (1-5) has been canceled as a Cal statement said “out of an abundance of caution” neither school has registered any positive test for Covid 19. The game was scheduled for Dec 22 but now Cal will play a home game against Seattle University.

#2 Michael, Cal’s last game still a subject of discussion that incredible upset win over the USF Dons (5-3) I know you had a chance to see it when Makale Foreman took a three point shoot in the closing minute that won it for Cal.

#3 Taking a look at the game against USF did Cal head coach Mark Fox do somethings to tweak the offense and this is a team that didn’t panic but played up to the opponent and pretty much stayed with one of the best college teams.

#4 Cal has got some help from Grant Anticevich (18) and Matt Bradley (17) the Bears will certainly rely on them this season to provide offense and scoring.

#5 Cal has added two home games Dec 19 vs. CSUN and Dec 22 against Seattle University it has to be a relief for all involved that Cal doesn’t have to make that cross country to trip to Boston.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Bears come to life in second half get big win over USF by a bucket

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris the Cal Bears got an unexpected win over the USF Dons (5-3) on Saturday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley was this one as good as it gets?

#2 The Dons put on an offensive performance in the first half with a 37-29 but in the second half the Bears came out and turned things around outscoring the Dons by ten 43-33.

#3 Morris, what fired up the Bears to play such a second half like that. They brought in a three game losing streak and that included their recent loss at Pepperdine. There were some doubters regarding Cal before this one started.

# 4 Speaking of that second half the Bears got offensive help from Grant Anticevich 18 pts, Andre Kelly 22 pts and Matt Bradley 17 pts the offense distributed nicely and coach Mark Fox had to be relieved by his players who finished in double digits.

#5 The Bears next are at Boston College Dec 22 who are 1-5, 15th in the ACC. BC has a four game losing streak. Coming off this win against the Dons after losing three straight before which Bears team will show up on Dec 22?

#1 The game was close but the Bears just couldn’t pull the trigger losing to Boston College Eagles by four 64-60 at Chase Center in the City last Sat Dec 21

#2 The Bears came away with a first half lead but it was that second half that the Eagles came away with a 38-31 second half enough to do the trick for the win.

#1 On Saturday at Chase Center was the game against Boston College (8-5) a game that the Cal Bears (6-6) could have won in a 64-60 loss.

#2 The Bears had a chance to hold off the Eagles after leading in the first half the game slipped in the second half when BC outscored Cal 38-31.

#3 Playing at Chase Center was there a different feel a different vibe playing in a neutral site game for the Bears that might have played in their game.

# 4 Matt Bradley led the Bears with 21 points with nine rebounds and two assists he’s been big for Cal but they could have used more help on Saturday.

#5 The Bears now have lost four of their last five games and host Harvard next Sunday at Haas Pavilion

#6 Football: The Illinois Illini and Cal Bears on paper look like evenly matched teams you will have a chance to talk with both teams on Friday 27th at a presser in talking with Cal quarterback Chase Garber how much is riding on this game this Saturday. The Red Box Bowl at Levi Stadium is on Mon Dec 30th.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Gael forces to hand Cal their first home loss; Bears try to regroup against Boston Saturday

#1 Just overwhelming as the Cal Bears were outplayed by the St. Mary’s Gaels on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.

#2 The Bears came into Haas undefeated at home this season, but couldn’t stop the Gales offensive evening, losing by 12 points for their first home loss.

#3 Two of the Gales forces that were just unstoppable were Jordan Ford’s 32 points and Malik Fitts’ 28 points, who led St Mary’s in scoring.

#4 Cal head coach Mark Fox said that St. Mary’s offense was very good and trying to shut them down proved difficult.

#5 The Bears will try to get back into the win column as they matchup against Boston College at the Al Attles Classic on Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

Stanford Ladies Return Home and to Their Winning Ways

The number three Stanford Cardinal returned to Maples Pavilion for the first time this season on Friday night, where they beat the Cal Poly Mustangs by the final score of 86-51. It was the first time that the Cardinal have played on their home floor since March 26th, where they hosted Michigan in a second round NCAA tournament matchup.

The Cardinal are coming off a two game east coast road trip which started the season with a record of 1-1.  After a win against Boston College, the Cardinal went to take on number one Connecticut, a game where they would fall 76-57.

Friday night’s game was back and forth between Stanford and Cal Poly for the first ten minutes, seeing six different lead changes.  It was a close game up until Stanford broke free and went on a 27-10 run to end the half.  The halftime score was 41-27.  Stanford continued to dominate the second half of play as well, outscoring Cal Poly 45-24.

Stanford was led by Chiney Ogwumike, who scored 36, a new career high.  She also brought down 11 rebounds in Friday nights’ win.  For Ogumike, its’ her third double-double in as many games and also the 61st in her career on the farm.  Ogwumike was also the only Stanford player to get into double figures, as the next closest player was Mikaela Ruef with nine.  Though Stanford only had one player in double digits, it was a complete team game for the Cardinal as ten different players got onto the scoring sheet.  All of Stanford’s starters got on the scoring sheet as well, as Ruef scored nine, Ogwumike had 36, Kailee Johnson scored seven and Lili Thompson and Amber Orrange each had six.

Stanford continues to struggle with turnovers however, where Cal Poly forced another 15, totaling 46 in only three games.  Luckily for the Cardinal, they were able to dominate the boards once again, outrebounding the Mustangs 47-37.The Cardinal up their record to 2-1 in the win, and they will cap off their short two game home stand on Sunday against the UC Davis Aggies with a scheduled tip for 2 p.m. before they go back on the road to take on Texas.
