Vinni Lettieri, David Pastrnak, Charlie Coyle, Brad Marchand and Elias Lindholm scored for the Bruins. Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves for the win. Barclay Goodrow, Will Smith and Fabian Zetterlund scored for the Sharks. Yaroslav Askarov made 27 saves in the loss.

The game was a homecoming of sorts for several Massachusetts natives on the Sharks team, including Will Smith, Collin Graf and Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky. It was their first time in Boston as NHL players and coach.

“I thought for the majority of the game I liked our game. We just got very immature in the third period,” said Ryan Warsofsky. “Just a young team that got scrambly. You know, they put us on our heels and we couldn’t relieve the pressure by making some plays. We got back to kind of flipping pucks to the middle of the ice and they feed off of that stuff.”

Vinni Lettieri scored the first goal at 9:27 of the first period. Lettieri tipped Jordan Oesterle’s shot from the blue line. Assists went to Oesterle and Oliver Wahlstrom.

Barclay Goodrow tied the game with a goal at 13:16. Ty Dellandrea dumped the puck in from the centerline. Nico Sturm chased it down and then passed it back to a trailing Goodrow for the shot.

Boston outshot San Jose 11-6 in the first period. The Sharks pushed back in the second, outshooting Boston 14-10.

David Pastrnak gave the Bruins their second lead with a power play goal at 7:02 of the second period. Pavel Zacha carried the puck around behind the net and then sent the puck to Pastrnak in the circle. Patrnak scored with a snap shot. Assists went to Zacha and Elias Lindholm.

Will Smith tied it again at 8:52. Smith took the puck away from John Beecher, then carried it back across the blue line and passed it back and forth with Mikael Granlund before shooting it by Korpisalo on the short side.

Fabian Zetterlund gave the Sharks their first and only lead of the game at 15:18. Zetterlund carried the puck all the way from the Sharks’ zone, took a shot, caught his own rebound and put it in the net. An assist went to Will Smith.

Charlie Coyle tied the game again at 8:22 of the third period. Skating to the net, Coyle caught a pass from the boards and snapped it in. Assists went to Matthew Poitras and Brad Marchand.

Coyle scored again at 14:11. Shooting as he crossed the goal line, his shot went off of Askarov and in. Assists went to Poitras and Mason Lohrei.

Brad Marchand made it 5-3 with an empty net goal at 18:45. Assists went to Pastrnak and Brandon Carlo. Elias Lindholm made it 6-3 with a second empty net goal at 19:35. Assists went to Coyle and Andrew Peeke.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in Nashville against the Predators at 5:00 PM PT.

Sharks can’t push back on Brazel and Nelson’s goals as Isles dump on SJ defense 4-1 at UBS Arena

New York Islanders goaltender Marcus Hogberg (50) makes a stop on the San Jose Sharks Luke Kunin (11) in the second period at UBS Arena in Elmont on Sat Jan 18, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

ELMONT, NY. — With several players sick or injured, the depleted San Jose Sharks fell to the New York Islanders 4-1 on Saturday night at UBS Arena.

The Sharks tied the game at 1-1 in the second period, but the Isles regained the lead 40 seconds later and took off with an unstoppable momentum.

“Yeah we just can’t make these, I don’t know if I can say it, but bonehead mistakes that end up in the back of net,” said Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky. “We get away from who we are as players and as a team, so until we do that we’re going to be kind of seeing the same result.”

Mathew Barzal scored the first goal of the night unassisted at 8:47 in the second period to put the Islanders up 1-0. The Sharks answered back at 10:02 when Barclay Goodrow scored a goal assisted by Jan Rutta to tie the game at 1-1.

“Yeah just saw (Collin) Graf and (Nico) Sturm driving the net, driving the inside and just trying to get the puck in,” said Goodrow of his goal.

Just 40 seconds later, Brock Nelson made a goal assisted by Kyle Palmieri and Adam Pelech to put the Isles back up 2-1. Then with 27 seconds remaining in the period, Noah Dobson made a goal assisted by Barzal and Bo Horvat, boosting the Isles up 3-1.

In the third period, Ryan Pulock made a goal assisted by Anthony Duclair and Nelson at 1:03 to expand the Islanders’ lead to 4-1. The Sharks made an effort in the third, but couldn’t score.

Sharks 19-year-old forward Will Smith, who was their fourth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, skated with Mikael Granlund and Fabian Zetterlund for the very first time.

“I mean this team has done it before coming back 4-1, so I think having the mindset that we’re not out of it, and obviously no quit is kind of the mindset going into the third,” said Smith.

The Isles had an especially memorable night before the puck dropped, holding a ceremony on the ice inducting Brent Sutter into their Hall of Fame.

The Sharks (14-28-6) continue their road trip on Monday against the Boston Bruins (22-19-6). The puck drops at 10am PST on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa: Sharks coughing up too many goals in first periods 12-4; SJ back to drawing board in Vegas on Saturday

San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro (38) moves the puck past the Los Angeles Kings left wing Trevor Moore (12) in the first period at Crypto.com Arena on Thu Oct 24, 2024 (AP News photo)

On San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The San Jose Sharks made history going winless with their eighth loss in a row they accomplished this last season as well and later losing ten straight last season. The Sharks tied the eight loss record for a team who had done it two straight years with the 1960-61 and 1961-62 Boston Bruins.

#2 San Jose head coach Ryan Warsofsky said that this is the NHL the best league in the world and that if guys don’t enjoy playing this game then their in the wrong business and that their on the wrong team and that Warsofsky said “we’ll weed those guys right out.”

#3 The Sharks in the first period have been outscored 12-4. The Sharks have a major concern on defense in the early stages of games. The Sharks were clobbered by the Winnipeg Jets in on lopsided game back on Friday Oct 18th in Winnipeg 8-3. That’s a lot of goals to give up for one game.

#4 Another good example of what Warsofsky is talking about is Thursday night’s game where the Los Angeles Kings dominated the first period opening up the game with three goals taking a 3-0 lead. The Sharks had to play defense and try and make up the difference but in the end they lost by a goal 3-2.

#5 The Sharks are back at the drawing board once more as they meet the Vegas Golden Knights. The Knights are another first period scoring team they scored three unanswered goals against the Kings in Vegas on Tuesday night for a loaded 6-1 win. The Knights are 4-2-1 going up against a Shark team that is 0-6-2. What are San Jose chances as they face off against the Knights at T Mobile Center on Saturday night?

Utah Endures To The End With Third Overtime Victory, Edge Gritty Bruins 2-1 At Delta Center

The Utah Hockey Club celebrates a tying goal in the third period that later forced overtime against the Boston Bruins at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Sat Oct 19, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Tom Walker

SALT LAKE CITY–The Utah Hockey Club returned home Saturday night to face the Boston Bruins following the franchise’s first road trip which began with overtime victories in New York against the Islanders and Rangers before falling to the New Jersey Devils followed by an overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Utah scored five or more goals in each of their first three games of the season, and entered Saturday night’s contest with a 3-1-1 record placing them 3rd in the Central Division behind the Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets.

If you like overtimes Utah is your Hockey Club as they came away with a razor edge victory over the visiting Bruins at the Delta Center 2-1 scoring the game winner in the overtime stanza.

Unlike Utah’s season opener against Chicago, where Blackhawks fans were relatively few and quiet, a noticeable contingent of yellow-clad Boston fans streamed into the Delta Center and within moments of the puck drop broke out into a “Let’s Go Bruins” chant.  The hometown fans would not have it and immediately drowned out the visitors shouting “UTAH!” following every “Let’s Go.”  On the ice, both teams traded chances throughout the opening period but returned to their locker rooms in a scoreless tie.

Boston’s Cole Koepke opened the scoring at 12:49 of the second period with a goal assisted by Brad Marchand as the throng of Bruins fans in attendance roared their approval.  Shortly afterward Utah appeared to tie things up on a blistering shot by Michael Kesselring, with the screaming hometown fans making it clear that they were in the majority, but play continued as if nothing had happened. During the period intermission, multiple angles of the play were displayed on the Jumbotron where one could see that the puck struck the post and flew along the goal line without crossing.

In the third period, Utah thought they had gotten the equalizer at 6:48, but the goal was reversed due to an offsides violation.  The two teams got chippier as the period wore on, with Utah goaltender Connor Ingram repeatedly standing on his head to keep his squad in the game.

Finally at 14:51, defenseman Vladislalv Kolyachonok received a beautiful stretch pass from Nick Schmaltz and charged to the goal crease where he found the back of the net, with captain Clayton Keller also assisting.  Regulation play ended tied at one apiece, with Utah going to overtime for the fourth time in six games of the young season.

David Pastrnak of the Bruins gave Utah a gift 42 seconds into overtime, going to the sin bin with a tripping penalty against Clayton Keller.  Utah kept the pressure on Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman during their 4-on-3 power play, and as the penalty expired and Pastrnak came out of the box, Michael Kesselring knocked in the game-winner unassisted to give UHC the 2-1 victory, keeping them perfect at home and 4-1-1 overall.

After the game, Vladislav Kolyachonok talked about scoring his first Utah Hockey Club goal. “Yeah, it feels good. It’s a good team effort and a good pass. I think all the guys did a great job, so I appreciate the effort and work. It’s nice to get a nice result.” With regard to the team’s resiliency and coming back to win, Kolyachonok added, “I think it shows team character. We have lots of individuals on our team, lots of great players, and everybody supports each other on the bench. That’s what helped us to get a win.”

Michael Kesselring felt great about the game-winning goal, but offered particular praise of his teammates. “I thought everybody, all six defensemen, all forwards, we all bought in tonight. We managed the puck pretty well, and just bought in and got it done.”

Head coach André Tourigny commented on Kesselring’s overtime goal after having hit the post earlier in the game. “Yeah, he has a great shot. The big thing with Kesselring is to take that shot. I think he passed on two or three shots tonight. I think at some point he will understand that with a shot like that you don’t pass. You find a way to have more. He has a really good shot.”

With Saturday night’s win, Utah has beaten two of the Eastern Conference’s top teams over the past week. Their next game is Tuesday Oct 22 at the Delta Center against the Ottawa Senators.
